A Brief History of Ethnic Barbie Dolls Through the Years

A few years ago, Sports Illustrated decided to make the 50th issue of its widely popular Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition by devoting an entire spread to the iconic Barbie doll.

And of course, the decision did not come without controversy and the usual back and forth debate and banter about Barbie, what she means to little girls and their self esteem, and to beauty ideals.

Here is a recap of the history of Barbie

Barbie, full name Barbara Millicent Rogers, was first introduced on the market on March 9, 1959. Her boyfriend, Ken, debuted in 1961.

She has always been controversial for activist-type moms who fear that the doll represents an unattainable and idiolized form of beauty that they don’t want their daughters striving to achieve.

Many moms “of color” have opposed Barbie because they say she represents a beauty ideal that their daughters can never attain (and look natural trying): blue eyes and blond hair.

However, a few year’s after her introduction, Mattel introduced a doll with darker complexion. In 1967, Mattel released a “colored” Francie doll that was made in the same mold as Barbie but just still had European facial features and body shape.

Only in 2009, did Mattel release a “black Barbie” for commercial (non-collection) sale that had African features.

Asian parents wanted in too and wondered when Barbie would come in a version that resembled their little girls.  In 2010, Mattel released its first ever Asian doll, a Ken version, which many Asians complained should’ve been dressed like a modern Asian man in a t-shirt and jeans and not a Kabuki-looking, domo outfit.

A few years ago, when Mattel tried to modernize and release chic and updated dolls, mainly for adult collectors,  I noticed the Barbie Basic  dolls which featured dolls of various ethnic faces, hair styles and texture.

In fact, it was the first time I saw a dark complexioned doll with a mini Afro. I took a photo of it but in the caption, I noted how the black dolls were dressed extra provocatively and one had on a J-Lo style navel cut dress.  Upon research, I discovered that several African American parents were up in arms over the dolls. But honestly, since they were collector items for adults, I really didn’t see much harm in them, unless they are complaining about Black women being portrayed as hypersexual in the media too much, then okay.

Over the years, Mattel has released various ethnic dolls, though for collectors and not commercial sale.

In, 2009, Italian designer Eliana Lorena outfitted over 500 Barbies in multicultural clothing for a charity auction to benefit Save the Children at Sotheby’s in Florence, Italy, to celebrate the then 50th anniversary of Barbie. Among those in the collection:

Since then, many other brands and doll makers have attempted to step in and fill the void and provide dolls for children from various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. You can find a great articles giving a rundown here and here!

These 10 Stores Have the Best Return Policies

return_policies-793x496

The best return policies make it simple and easy for customers to return or exchange a purchase if they aren’t satisfied. In fact, many of the 10 best return policies place no time limits on returns, and some will accept exchanges and returns even for well-used items.

These favorable return policies truly put the customer first, which is a huge help for a shopper struggling with a holiday spending hangover or a giftee dealing with a haul of unwanted presents. These 10 stores with the most generous return policies this holiday season:

1. Nordstrom Return Policy

Nordstrom made our list of the best return policies last year, and its generous policy put it among the best this year. Nordstrom is unique because it actually has no return policy. The store “handle[s] returns on a case-by-case basis with the ultimate objective of satisfying the customer,” according to its website. The store’s site also said it has a philosophy to ensure its customers are satisfied and will always try to deal with customers “fairly and reasonably.”

In practice, this gives Nordstrom team members a lot of flexibility on returns, which can work in the customer’s favor. For instance, there is no time limit on returns or exchanges, and Nordstrom’s return policy does not have any hard-and-fast rules against returning items without a receipt, without tags or that have been worn (special occasion dresses excluded). Nordstrom’s online return policy is similarly generous, and return shipping is free.

Shoppers should note that the Nordstrom Rack return policy is different, granting 90 days to return items and requiring returns to have original tags and receipt or packing slip.

Zika Report: More than Half of Brazilian Women Avoiding Pregnancy

worried-girl-413690_960_720

In a nation where Abortion is illegal and has been the hardest hit by the Zika virus epidemic, Brazil has seen a precipitous drop in pregnancies. According to a letter published in the BMJ Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, 56% of women surveyed said that they avoided getting pregnant because of Zika

Brazil leads the world in confirmed cases of infection with nearly 110,000 cases, according to the Pan American Health Organization. As a result of the infections, there have been over 2,200 cases of congenital Zika syndrome in babies (microcephaly) born to women infected with the virus.

The report revealed some detailed insights. More black and non-white women said they didn’t want to get pregnant as did women in the northeastern part of the country, the area most hit by the virus. The latest report from a Brazilian scientist studying the impact that the epidemic is having on reproductive choices shows that the consequences of the Zika outbreak may be long lasting. In a brief . More women in the hardest hit areas of Brazil, in the northeastern part of the country, said they didn’t want to get pregnant, as well as more black and non–white women.

The report says that the findings should alert government officials to the urgent need to address reproductive health options for women. Better access and more options for birth control should also be a priority to give women longer term control over their reproductive health, the report says.

BumpWatch: Marion Cotillard looks Regal Promoting ‘Assasin’s Creed’ w/Cast

marion

We are always happy to see when moms-to-be defeat the stereotype of the laid up pregnant woman. A lot of the celebrities we feature while pregnant spend a lot of their pregnancy during very busy promotion tours.

So is true for French actress Marion Cotillard who is simultaneously promoting her new movie Allied with co-star Brad Pitt, and her action thriller Assassin’s Creed.

The Inception star joined some of her castmates at the NYC premiere of the movie at  AMC Empire 25 theater on December 13, 2016.

She went glam in an eggplant and midnight embroidered cape by Andrew Gn which also looked quite regal. It was paiered with a loose black fishtail gown from the same designer. We love the side swept loose waves and the deep purple lip.

Michael Fassbender, Essie Davis, and Jeremy Irons also attended the “Assassin’s Creed” New York Premiere.

We saw the preview for this one! It looks really good as well!

This is Cotillard’s second child with longtime partner, Guillaume Canet. The couple has a son named Marcel born in 2011.

How Smart Parents Plan Eating Out With Children

chairs-1837293_960_720

When you become a parent, there are a host of enjoyable things that have to be put on the backburner or even given up until your brood is a little older and more self-sufficient. While enjoying a meal out on the town may seem like one of those things, that isn’t necessarily true. You only have to choose the right restaurant, one that is open, friendly and welcoming to pint-sized patrons. Hunting down a selection of kid-friendly eateries in your area isn’t always easy, but it can be done and will allow you to enjoy the luxury of having the occasional meal prepared for you.

Make Sure There Are Kid-Friendly Amenities

Before you show up to your chosen dinner hot-spot, it’s wise to call ahead to check on their kid-friendly amenities. Finding out whether they keep high chairs, booster seats and kid’s cups on hand and if they have a kids’ menu will let you know if they’re truly kid friendly. Some restaurants may tout their ability to welcome guests of the younger persuasion, only to reveal their complete lack of accommodations for kids after you arrive. The presence of these basic dining amenities for kids can help you figure out where a restaurant truly stands on the kid spectrum.

Find One With Some Down-Time

A crowded dining room may be loud enough to mask the excited shouts and exclamations of your children better than a quiet, sedate room, but it’s also more likely to excite them more and exacerbate their hyperactivity. A wildly popular restaurant that’s has a wait list from the moment the doors open every day until the last meal is served at night might be a swanky choice, but it probably isn’t right for parties with kids. Finding a restaurant where business tends to lull between lunch and dinner might force you to eat a bit earlier than you’d like, but you’ll be able to have more of the dining room to yourself.

Check Out Reviews

Once upon a time, you had to rely upon word of mouth or your own firsthand experiences to find out whether or not a restaurant was kid-friendly and enjoyable for adults. These days, it seems like every diner thinks they’re a reviewer. The upshot of this attitude is that you can peruse those reviews from the comfort of home, using them as an indicator for how well your child’s needs are likely to be met in a particular restaurant.

Consider Holding off on Fine Dining For a While

Unless you can get a reliable sitter, you’ll probably want to wait until your kids are a bit older before enjoying high-end fine dining. In addition to the stuffy atmosphere that will be off-putting and boring for younger kids, other diners aren’t likely to welcome them with open arms and the rich, refined tastes offered by menu items will probably be unappetizing to kids.

Look For Restaurants That Ban Smoking

If you live in a city that has instituted a smoking ban, then this rule of thumb is a bit less effective. In less progressive cities that don’t have city-wide bans on smoking, however, you can spot a restaurant that’s truly kid-friendly by finding one that doesn’t allow smoking inside.

Network With Other Parents in Your Area

When you’re new to the area or new to parenting, kid-friendly restaurants are only one of the things that you may have trouble locating. Getting to know other parents and networking with them will allow you to track down all of the best restaurants for grabbing a quick bite with kids in tow. Play dates and trips to the playground are great places to meet other parents, make friends and learn more about parenting in your area.

Keep Cuisine in Mind

No matter how well-behaved your child is, there are some things that will still make dining in certain restaurants with him impossible. Quiet and mannerly kids still may not take kindly to exotic foods, unusual tastes or things that they can’t easily identify. Before you settle on a restaurant to visit with your brood or a group of other families, make sure you carefully consider whether or not your child is ready for sushi or tikka masala.

National Premature Awareness Month: Things To Know

baby-784607_960_720

November is National Premature Awareness Month.

Sadly, there are 15 million babies are born prematurely each year – and complications from premature birth are the leading cause of death among children under 5, taking nearly 1 million lives annually.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, premature birth is the biggest contributor for infant death, with most preterm-related deaths occurring among babies who were born very preterm, before 32 weeks.

Premature (also known as preterm) birth refers to when a baby is born too early, before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Premature birth is a concern because babies born too soon miss out on this valuable time to grow and develop.  Babies who survive may spend weeks or months hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and may face lifelong problems such as

  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Breathing and respiratory problems
  • Visual problems including retinopathy of prematurity
  • Hearing loss
  • Feeding and digestive problems

Fortunately, the medical community is aware of precautions can be taken by adapting to these newborns’ unique physiological and developmental needs.

Dräger, a leader in neonatal care, suggests the following that can be done to encourage preemie development including

  • Noise: Better protect preemies from noise stress by controlling their exposure to harmful noise. Loud noise in the NICU can produce changes in heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and oxygenation.
  • Light: Efforts must be made to better control disturbing light in the NICU. While infants in the NICU are exposed to constant light, studies have shown that bright light levels in the NICU may have negative results on the growth and development of preemies.
  • Cold/Heat: A preemie’s temperature must be kept stable at all times to better protect and prevent cold or heat stress.

“There is nothing more exciting than the birth of a newborn, but for families of babies born prematurely life’s first moments may be some of the hardest as they are forced into the NICU upon birth,” said Merouane Djerbal, Draeger Director of Marketing.  “At this time, nothing is more important than ensuring utmost care to the family’s new baby, and we can do this by creating an environment that caters to their unique developmental needs and understands just how sensitive a preemie’s senses are at this stage of life.”

Adele: Postpartum Depression Scares Her From Gretting Pregnant Again

adele-vanity

Adele says the severe postpartum depression she suffered after giving birth to her son Angelo has turned her off from getting pregnant again.

In the upcoming December issue of Vanity Fair, the phenom reveals that her PPD was so bad she is not sure if she can go through it again with partner Simon Konecki.

“I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me,” she says, adding that in lieu of taking medication or talking with a professional to help her cope, she took consult from other moms.

“My boyfriend said I should talk to other women who were pregnant, and I said, ‘Fk that, I ain’t hanging around with a fking bunch of mothers (sic)’,” she tells the publication. “Then, without realising it, I was gravitating towards pregnant women and other women with children, because I found they’re a bit more patient. You’ll be talking to someone, but you’re not really listening, because you’re so f**king tired.”

But while her non-mom friends didn’t get it, her friends with kids totally did.

“My friends who didn’t have kids would get annoyed with me,” she continues. “Whereas I knew I could just sit there and chat absolute mush with my friends who had children, and we wouldn’t judge each other. One day I said to a friend, ‘I fking hate this,’ and she just burst into tears and said, ‘I fking hate this, too.’ And it was done. It lifted.”

She added that she had a tough time self-diagnosing her condition because she wasn’t educated as to what it is.

“My knowledge of postpartum-or post-natal, as we call it in England, is that you don’t want to be with your child; you’re worried you might hurt your child; you’re worried you weren’t doing a good job,” she explains. “But I was obsessed with my child. I felt very inadequate; I felt like I’d made the worst decision of my life… It can come in many different forms.”

She confided that spending time alone helped.

“I just said, I’m going to give myself an afternoon a week, just to do whatever the f**k I want without my baby,” she says. “A friend of mine said, ‘Really? Don’t you feel bad?’ I said, ‘I do, but not as bad as I’d feel if I didn’t do it.’ Four of my friends felt the same way I did, and everyone was too embarrassed to talk about it; they thought everyone would think they were a bad mom, and it’s not the case. It makes you a better mom if you give yourself a better time.”
