Follow These Tips for Thanksgiving Travel with a Toddler

airport-1019056_960_720

Now that Halloween is over, it may be time to start shifting focus on Thanksgiving planning. If your family is hitting the road and taking a long-distance car trip to your Thanksgiving destination this year, here are snippets from our Thanksgiving travel tips to make it a smoother ride especially if you’re traveling with a toddler:

Set Clear Expectations

Before venturing out on the road, start small and positive by setting guidelines, says Carrie Krawiec, Michigan-based family therapist at Birmingham Maple Clinic. “Parents can set their children up for success by creating easy-to-remember expectations before leaving home,” she says. Create a list of five car behaviors to follow, such as keeping your hands to yourself and your bottom in the seat, using an inside voice and avoiding putting your feet on chair in front of you, suggests Krawiec.

Encourage positive behavior with travel rewards. “Parents can gauge their child’s level of attention by saying ‘I am going to watch these things and every five minutes if you have done this, you will earn a point for a sticker or silly band,’” says Krawiec. “This will make travel more cooperative.”

Charge Electronics

Even though you may limit your toddler’s time with tablets and electronic games at home, an iPad or Gameboy may be just what your child needs while traveling on long road trips. “With the age of technology, we have a big bonus,” says Christine Gutierrez, New York-based psychotherapist.

Many vehicles come equipped with DVD players and outlets for charging electronics to ease the challenge of traveling with young children. Pop in your child’s favorite movie or host a family sing-along with his favorite CD.

Make the trip educational, too. Download educational games and applications on a tablet to entertain your child or pick up a book or CD before taking off on your road trip. “Compromise is key here,” says Gutierrez. “Make baby happy and the rest of you shall be happy in the car as well.”

Chomp Down on Snacks Often, hunger cravings can cause a toddler to act out or misbehave. Prepare for a long road trip by packing a cooler of snacks and drinks to satisfy his hunger. Non-messy items, such as grapes, carrots or fruit gummies, will keep your toddler and your vehicle clean during snack time. Juice packs or milk in a Sippy cup can also comfort a sleepy toddler while traveling.

Break Out Goodie Bags The idea of being locked inside a vehicle for hours on end doesn’t necessarily sound appealing to a young child; however, if the trip includes goodie bags filled with games and activities, she may be more than eager to jump into that car seat.

Keep the bag in the front seat with you and break out games and activities along the way as your toddler gets antsy, such as a coloring book and crayons, an etch-a-sketch or even bubbles to blow out the window. Make the trip educational by purchasing a map and asking your toddler to point out states you drive through or license plates from each state. When your toddler is tired of one game or activity, take out another to keep her occupied.

Parents can include any of the following in a “goodie” bag for a long road trip with toddlers:

  • Dry erase board with markers
  • Stickers
  • Small Cars
  • New Books
  • Paper for Drawing
  • Travel Versions of Favorite Games
  • Dollar Store Finds

You can make activities much simpler by bringing along a lap desk or a cookie sheet your child can place on her lap. As a bonus, using magnets on the cookie sheet creates a game of its own, and the raised edges will prevent crayons or cars from landing on the floor of the car.

“Planning ahead is the key to preventing restless, unhappy children (and parents) during a car trip,” says Richard Peterson, vice president of education at Kiddie Academy. “In fact, you can even sneak in a little education along the way by playing classic car games, adjusted to fit your child’s age.”

Peterson suggests asking toddlers to search for shapes, colors or specific objects along the way. “The games will serve as a distraction, but also help to hone observation skills,” he says.

If all else fails, crank up the tunes or make a pit stop at a park along the way to deter boredom for your little one. “Boredom is probably the biggest difficulty your child will encounter during a long car trip,” says Peterson. “Toddlers live in the here and now and do not have the life experience to understand that the destination will be worth the time in the car seat.”

Hold Up, the Carter-Knowles Has a Boss Family Halloween Dynasty Too

the-carter-knowleshalloween

Well we’ve always dubbed Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka and their twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott  the best celebrity family each Halloween because they’ve consistently outdone themselves each year.

This year was no different. Each member of the family dressed as a different Old Hollywood figure. Harris was Groucho Marx; Burtka was Charlie Chaplin; Harper was Marilyn Monroe; and Gideon, was James Dean.  Costumes like these for an entire family take a lot of planning to pull off.

But it looks like we have been overlooking a blog fave Bumpwatch alum and her family: Beyonce!

The mega star, her husband rapper Jay-Z and their daughter Blue Ivy have rocked some pretty amazing family costumes. And…they usually do more than one each year as well.

This year, she and Jay dressed as Black Barbie and Ken dolls, complete in the packaging and everything. They nailed it!

Mama Knowles, Tina, got in on the act and was a member of Salt-N-Pepa along with Blue Ivy. Amazing!

Last year around Halloween time, Beyonce wore two costumes as well dressing up as Storm for Ciara‘s surprise birthday party that her then-fiance Russell Wilson threw for her.

For Halloween later in the month, the Knowles- Carter clan dressed as characters from the Eddie Murphy cult film, Coming to America.

Beyonce and Jay-Z were Queen and King of the fictional African nation of Zamuda while Blue played Murphy’s love interest in the film, Lisa McDowell.

Mrs. Carter even changed up her outfit to a traditional African print Ankara dress while attending a party with Jay that night.

In 2014, artists was the theme and Bey went as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo while Jay-Z personified the haunted Jean-Michel Basquiat and Blue wore a jacket made of one of Basquiat’s works.

Earlier in the day that year, Queen Bey was dressed as the Queen of R&B 90s pop Janet Jackson from the Rhythm Nation video and Blue was her sister Michael Jackson.

What a great Halloween Family!

First Time Moms: Here are 4 Ways to Bond with Your Newborn

mom and baby

When your first baby is born, you’re probably a bit nervous about bonding. Breastfeeding is one of the more obvious bonding experiences that comes to mind, but if you’re having difficulty with it, you might feel like a failure and even wonder if you’ll ever bond with your child.

It’s hard to look at this brand-new little person and imagine that not long from now, they’re going to be covering you in kisses and calling you Mommy!

The good news is, you’ll soon find that their universe revolves around you and that they love you very much, but here’s some tips for some fun activities you can do with your baby/toddler to strengthen that bond even more.

SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT

We all love cuddles, right? Of course, so does your baby! In particular, the feeling of your warm skin against theirs is very soothing and pleasant for a baby. This unfamiliar new world that they are in can feel pretty scary sometimes, and a nice relaxing skin-to-skin cuddle with mommy is a great way to calm them down when they’re frightened or upset.

Skin-to-skin cuddling of your baby also has benefits you may not have been aware of. According to the International Breastfeeding Centre, skin-to-skin contact helps to stabilize the baby’s body temperature, heart and breathing rates, and immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth will colonize the baby with the same bacteria as the mother, which is believed to prevent allergies.

READING TO YOUR BABY

You can start reading to a baby straightaway! It might feel a little bit silly to be reading to a newborn, but your baby has been listening to your voice while in the womb for a while now and already finds it soothing. It’s easier to get into the reading habit now than when they’re a 4-year old racing around the house, so start reading now for great rewards later.

The experience of reading has so much to teach babies: the tactile sensation of the pages, the sounds of the words, the visuals of the pictures, etc.

Reading to your child benefits their language development, as they get used to the sounds and words. It also helps the baby to learn about the things they will see in their daily life. Make sure you point to the pictures while you’re reading the story, i.e. if there’s a train in the story, point to the train as you say the word “train”.

You’d be surprised before they even start to speak how many vocabulary words they will have committed to memory this way. But beyond development, this is also a shared experience, and before long they’re going to be following you around the house with board books asking you to read to them!

Review: A Hardware Solution to Parental Controlling All Household Devices

img_1431

I have a few kids who are literally addicted to internet and an online gaming. This means, there is a struggle in my household to get them to focus on academics during the school week (and weekend); and I have to worry about them bumping into the bevvy of inappropriate, violent and sexually explicit content on the Internet.

In comes Clean Router which is a hardware-based parent control system. That’s what makes it stand out from other software-based firewall, parental control products and subscription services out there.

392281-setup-wizard

The device has four Ethernet ports and two USB ports and is based on Wi-Fi so it connects to all the devices in the home and I can impose parental controls on my middle son’s tablet, daughter’s notebook and eldest son’s phone once it is connected to the home wif-fi.

cleanrouterdiagram

Once you’ve installed Clean Router, an unencrypted Wi-Fi source called CleanRouterWizard comes on the screen. Connect then follow the instructions to configure each device.

Parents then get an option to add specific sites to the blacklist or whitelist, either manually or by using buttons in the product’s reports. When Clean Router blocks a site, it offers the option to bypass that block for a fixed time or permanently.

This is great for me because I am constantly uninstalling gaming sites that miraculously get re-installed if I leave the house for 20 minutes.

392285-black-white-and-grey

An administrator password must be entered to bypass the restriction so no sneaky computer savvy kids can circumvent this. Yes!

392280-bypass-options

In addition to blocking sites that clearly match unwanted categories, Clean Router performs a real-time check on page content. Adjusting the filter level controls the threshold at which real-time filtering kicks in.

392277-filter-level

You can restrict the time each device is permitted to access the Internet using a simple weekly grid. However, matching the restriction to the device requires that you know the correct MAC address. That may be a bit hard for the average parent. I had to google instructions.

392283-time-restrictions

The content filter component blocks access to websites based on 9 different categories.

392279-content-filter

Because the router blocks the content, kids can’t try to circumvent the content filer. Sweet! Another plus to a hardware-based system. And the reports are easy to understand to see what sites your kids tried to access but was blocked.

392282-sites-visited

You can configure Clean Router to email a report of all activity at the end of each day. The report is in PDF format so you can easily print it out.

392278-daily-report

The device itself (a review version that I received complimentary) costs $149.99 retail and there is a $29.99 per year subscription fee AFTER the first six months. Software-based services will run you between 69.99 to 99.00 monthly and above, however, over time, Clean Router ends up being less expensive after the cost of the device gets eaten up as time goes along.  Also, there is NO limit for devices for Clean router where other services usually have a cap of 10.

In large households and ones where each kid has 2 to 3 devices each, Clean Router’s unlimited option comes out on top once again.

Bottom line: Though it has minor limitations, Clean Router turns out to be a pretty good investment and worthwhile product to overwhelmed and hurried parents who move way slower than the technology the kids rely on in this day and age.

I’ve been keeping a file of my favorite Halloween costumes I’ve encountered while online this past weekend and today. I will post them there here periodically and credit where and if I can because you know viral images are sometimes hard to trace back to the originator.

Anyway, enjoy!

Viral Fit Mom Admits Rock Hard Abs Caused Delivery Complications

12705504_1706261122983961_8227662551613040045_n

Australian fitness trainer Chontel Duncan gamed fame earlier this year for her rock hard abs that she used to show off in progression photos on her Instagram account and revealed this week that those abs actually caused complications during delivery of her son, Jeremy. ‘

Duncan returned to Instagram to confess that her delivery doctors ” struggled to rip Jeremiah from my tummy as my abs locked him in super tight as I began vomiting during the operation.”

She revealed that she is left with an unusually long c-section scar because of her abs.

“This is why my scar was cut up on my right side because the surgeon had to cut me further an use forceps to successfully get Jeremiah out,” she wrote in a caption to a photo of her bikini-line scar.

[Part 2] I CRIED I felt like I failed… but then @sam_hiitaustralia reminded me of my mantra which was “to go through all means necessary so baby feels nothing” & I smiled. With confidence I signed the forms & within 20mins had my baby in my arms. They struggled to rip Jeremiah from my tummy as my abs locked him in super tight as I began vomiting during the operation. This is why my scar was cut up on my right side because the surgeon had to cut me further an use forceps to successfully get Jeremiah out. Perhaps a down side to a strong core ? I healed according to my doctor normally, my scar isn’t small, it’s quiet large & I can feel in the centre scar tissue, I tried Bepanthen Scar Treatment & Skincerity breathable masque an this is what I have been left with. I would love 3 more children & I will always try for a vaginal birth with each one. So to all the women out there wearing a cesarean scar, I am VERY proud of what mine means & for the beautiful gift I received through mine. They are memories of the day we all became mummies ???❤️?

A photo posted by Chontel Duncan (@chontelduncan) on

Despite the trauma, Duncan said she is happy for the experience and posted her scar out of solidarity with other women who wear pregnancy-related scars.

And here she is with perfect abs again after birth. Whoa!

Trending: Kelly Clarkson Killing It as Sia in Song & Wig

kelly-clarkson-sia

Our two-time Bellyitch Bumpwatch mama Kelly Clarkson is trending because of her phenomenal cover of Sia‘s “Chandalier” while wearing one of the Australian artist’s signature eye-covering bleach blonde wigs.

The American Idol alum stood in front of a gorgeous flowered wall in her Nashville and belted out an a capella version of the 2014 hit.

“I don’t know how she does this ’cause, ya know, you can’t see,” Clarkson joked afterward of Sia’s hair. “But it’s also kind of awesome, because you’re in your own little world when you’re performing … I love that song. Everybody loves that song.”

Sia, who has penned hit songs for Rihanna, Katy Perry and others in addition to her own, has a signature look the includes half black, half white hair.

Clarkson ended the performance by promoting her second annual all-star Miracle on Broadway Christmas benefit show, set for December 16th at downtown Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

The event, which benefits four local charities, also features Reba, Ronnie Dunn, Kelsea Ballerini, RaeLynn, the Steeldrivers and Chip Esten.

10 Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips to Follow this Halloween

trick or treating

If you will be taking your little ones out Trick-or-Treating this afternoon and evening, we here at Bellyitch urge you to take safety precautions ahead of time. Here are some last-minute things to keep in mind compliments of the Pediatric Care network:

Halloween Safety Tips for Children:

  • Pin your child’s name, address and phone number to the inside of his or her costume in case you get separated.
  • Make sure older children are trick or treating in groups and that your child has a cell phone to call you if they get separated.
  • Only approach houses with porch lights on.
  • Never let them enter a house while trick or treating
  • Only eat candy from sealed packages–no homemade treats.

Halloween Safety Tips for Teens:

  • Make sure you know where the party is, who will be there and how you can reach them. Call the host parents to verify that adults will be supervising.
  • Talk to them about personal safety. Don’t accept food or drinks from anyone they don’t trust and to never leave their drink unattended.
  • Girls should never leave a party alone, always have someone escort them to their car.
  • Never get into a car with someone who has been drinking.
  • Above all, make it clear they can always call you–no matter what the situation–and that you will come to get them.

The Queen Elsa + Jedi Rey combo Costume this 5yr Old’s Dad Made is Really Rad!

This May, 5-year old Stormie took a comic con by storm when she arrived in her cosplay (costume play) dressed as two of her fave powerful characters in one: Frozen’s Queen Elsa and Rey from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Her blue Jedi Elsa Rey  went viral on Reddit when member Steven Lamb posted pics of his daughter in the costume she wore during a visit to Wizard World Comic Con in Des Moines, Iowa.

What was amazing was Lamb and his dad helped bring the costume to life. The inspiration came from his daughter’s dual love of two strong female characters.

“She took to Elsa because of the similar hair and eyes to Stormie’s own, and the ice powers,” Lamb told  Huffington Post. “With Rey it was more about seeing an empowered female character using the force and kicking bad guys’ butts.”

Lamb picked out the cotton gauze and crushed satin in a color similar to Elsa’s dress and stitched her bag by hand while his father made leather pieces for the costume. It was a team effort to assemble the costume which was made by member of a “Star Wars” cosplay group called the 501st Legion.

Total outlay was about  $150 on the materials, accessories, staff, boots and the blue lightsaber, of course.

The costume was a hit with other conference attendees and most certainly be again when Stormie revives it for Halloween.
