100+ Bellyitch Blog Posts You Might Have Missed (A Collage)

100 posts

In February, I got an alert that someone has liked a bunch of our old Instgram posts and I decided to assemble a collage of past posts you might have missed then and I’m reposting them now!

I got an alert that someone had liked several old pics on our Bellyitch Blog Instagram page. Those pics had me reminiscing on all the great topics and celebrity pregnancies we have covered in close to 8 years of this site’s existence. Even though we’ve only been on Instagram since 2012, a couple years after the social media app even launched, we’ve used it to share with audiences on that site all the fun and informative issues we were discussing in the blog.

For being an industrialized nation, the United States falls woefully behind even some developing nations when it comes to paid leave for parents to have families. This infographic looks at parental leave in the US as compared to the rest of the world. Policies are changing and private companies are stepping up, but is it enough?

Jersey Shore Grown Up: JWoww welcomes Second Child

lavalles and mathews

Congrats to former MTV reality TV star Jennifer “JWoww” Farley on the birth of her second child with husband Roger Mathews.

The couple named the new arrival whey welcomed on Thursday, May 5, Greyson Valor Matthews. She announced the news via Instagram, the way all celebrities relay news these days.

“So blessed to welcome our precious son,” Farley captioned the photo. “He arrived healthy at 6:03pm tonight and the most beautiful part is Roger got to deliver him with our doctor. Our family is complete!”

Greyson joins 21-month old big sister Meilani Alexandras.

Rogers Instagrammed a photo of himself participating in the delivery.

Yesterday at 6:03 pm (with the help of my assistant Dr. Rezai and my wonderful staff) I delivered our 7lb 2ounce son Greyson Valor Mathews into the world. Moments after my wife @jwoww water broke Dr. Rezai looked at me and said “Scrub up Stat ! You’re gonna deliver your son.” Ok so I made up the “Scrub up Stat” part but In my head he said it. Life is only gonna offer you opportunities like this once so you better capitalize on it. I would describe the experience like doing 3 back to back combat tours in Iraq while winning the Nobel Peace Prize simultaneously. What an amazing experience to literally witness the miracle of life from the very onset. He’s our little man, our perfect bundle of joy, the baby brother to an anxious little girl ready to met her Bubba. What a ride this thing called life is ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for the love and support for our newest chapter. We are blessed and we pray health and happiness finds you in reading this.

JWoww and her bff Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi grew up to be responsible adults after living their summers full of debauchery and drunkedness in front of the cameras as stars of the long-running MTV show “Jersey Shore”, which followed a group of friends that vacationed on the shore each summer.

Palozzi is a married (to Jionni LaValle) mom to a daughter  Giovanna Marie and son Lorenzo Dominic too and the two host a web series together about the reality of motherhood.

Eco Friday: Follow these Tips for a Healthy Vegan Pregnancy

vegan pregnancy

I’m one of those off ramp/on ramp vegans and currently I am just vegetarian, but for each of my pregnancies I didn’t dare stay away from dairy or meat because I feared iron deficiency knowing that baking a baby requires even more iron than normal. Also, the fat from dairy, I thought was needed.

But for people who have been completely vegan for at least a decade straight, is it possible to have a healthy pregnancy while vegan?

The Examiner’s: The Vegan RD , Virginia Messina offered these tips for a Vegan Pregnancy recently:

Pregnant vegans can meet nutrient needs by following just a few simple guidelines:

  • Consume at least 5 servings per day of protein-rich plant foods. A serving is ½ cup cooked beans, tofu, or tempeh; 1 ounce of meat analog, or 1 cup of soymilk. (Fortified almond, rice, coconut or hempseed milk are fine to drink, too, but they are too low in protein to count as a protein-rich food.)
  • Include a good source of vitamin C at every meal to boost iron absorption. Good choices are cantaloupe, kiwifruit, mango, citrus fruits and juices,  papaya, pineapple, strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, sweet peppers, and tomatoes.
  • Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables like collards, kale and spinach. They’re good sources of folic acid, a B-vitamin that is especially important in the very early stages of pregnancy. (Vegans typically have higher folate intakes than meat-eaters but still may not meet the needs of pregnancy.)
  • Include a serving or two of nuts and seeds in your daily menu to help meet zinc needs.
  • Emphasize calcium-rich foods in your daily menu: leafy green vegetables, calcium-set tofu, tempeh, soynuts, fortified plant milks and fortified juices are all good choices. If your diet falls short of the RDA (1,000 milligrams), a small supplement can help make up the difference.
  • Your doctor will most likely prescribe a prenatal vitamin supplement that includes iron and folic acid (usually recommended for all pregnant women). Make sure your supplement includes zinc, copper and iodine as well. Pregnant vegans (like all vegans) should be sure to have a chewable vitamin B12 supplement, too, providing 25 to 100 micrograms of B12 per day.

Talk to your doctor about the need for a supplement of the omega-3 fat DHA. The jury is still out on whether pregnant women need these supplements, but vegan versions are available.

  • Avoid super-restricted types of vegan diets. Diets that are too low in fat or are based on mostly raw foods can reduce nutrient absorption and make it harder to meet nutrient needs.

Good Luck!

OWN TV Reality TV star Evelyn Lozada Suffered her Second Miscarrage

evelyn

Sad news for OWN channel reality TV star Evelyn Lozada. The Livin Lozada star revealed in a recent edition of Life & Style magazine that she suffered two miscarriages in under a  year.

Lozada gave birth to her and fiance LA Dodgers baseball star Carl Crawford‘s first child together a couple of years ago. In addition to her 2-year old son Leo, she also has a daughter Shaneice Hairston, who also stars in the show with her mom.

She discovered the news while spending the holidays with Crawford’s family, she told the magazine.

“I was literally miscarrying my baby.” But she kept it a secret at the time because she “didn’t want to dampen the mood,” adding, “I miscarried on Thanksgiving Day.”

This makes a total of two since giving birth to Leo. During season one of her show, she also had a miscarriage which played out in episodes.

“I was like, this cannot be happening to my life again,” the shoe designer and boutique owner added.

But she is not giving up.

“I love being a mom,” she said. “After two miscarriages, it makes me want to be a mom even more.”

We’re sending out positive vibes and prayers to her and the fam.

There is a lot of buzz on the Internet over Janet Jackson’s decision to have a baby at age 50. I’m seeing a lot of ageism also being thrown about recklessly. While it is true that the odds are not as great for having a baby at an advanced age, there are certainly tons of benefits for waiting until late in life to start a family.

Celebrities are voters to. Zimbio rounded up about 50+ celebrities and took into account their appearances, social media and other indications of their candidate of choice for the US Presidential election. Of their list, I spotted 6 out of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums. Here is who they’re voting for…

Kim Kardashian shared a selfie with her husband Kanye West and Clinton on Instagram, writing, “I got my selfie!!! I really loved hearing her speak & hearing her goals for our country! #HillaryForPresident.”

Kerry Washington‘s endorsement? It’s handled. Hillary Clinton stopped by the set of Scandal to visit supporter Washington, who shared this snap on Instagram with the caption: “A good friend came by set today. Proud to say… #imwithher.”

Salma Hayek “I have a lot of hope for Hillary,” Salma Hayek said in an interview with Vibe. “We need somebody with experience who can endure. And this woman has endured it all. Hillary is tough.”

Amy Poehler After spending years dressing up as Hillary Clinton on SNL, Amy Poehler appeared in a campaign video supporting the candidate.

Olivia Wilde “I think Hillary is a really exciting candidate for so many reasons but she has a lot to prove to a lot of people. And I think she’s up for that,” Wilde said in an interview with The Daily Beast. “I think she learned a lot from the last election, I think she’s done a tremendous amount of work since then. The fact that she feels the plight of women and girls as the most important issue of the 21st century is a huge reason why I’m supporting her.”

It’s not all about Hil, we spotted a Donald Trump supporter in the bunch

Tila Tequila for Donald Trump -Internet personality Tila Tequila posted a nearly six-minute long YouTube video expressing her support for Donald Trump in the 2016 election

Grab Your Tissues for these 5 Tear-Jerking Mother’s Day 2016 Commercials

apple mother's day

It’s that time of the year again! Sappy commercials celebrating Mom’s are circulating the airwaves just in time for Mother’s Day. I must admit, I’m an emotional person and they get me all the time. I’m a blubbering mess by the end of some of these TV or Web ads.

Grab your tissues.

First, Pampers’ commercial is a tearjerker. Pass the tissues.

Apple jumped in the water with this tender commercial:

Love this one from Massage Envy dedicated to doing what we do best, everything.

Olive Garden celebrates mom with food and family with this one.

This one is my fave I think because I’ve been there and empathize with other moms with babies on the plane and I am aware of all the dirty looks passengers shoot women with babies on planes. Bravo Jet Blue for the best Mother’s Day commercial!
