12 Tips For Parenting Your Introvert Child (AND 12 for Extroverts)

introvert child parenting tips
I have one child who is an introvert and every once in a while, I need a reminder of how to parent an introvert.  Because I am brushing up on my knowledge, I figure I’d share the tips here with you all as well. (Also, following these tips are the tips for caring for an extrovert.)

Here is the sage old advice from an often circulated article, reblogged, and reshared so many times the original author is unknown. I also like the 15 tips I found here!
HOW TO CARE FOR AN INTROVERT CHILD

1. Respect their need for privacy
2. Never embarrass them in public
3. Let them observe first in new situations
4. Give them time to think. Don’t demand instant answers.
5. Don’t interrupt them.
6. Give them advanced notice of expected changes in their lives
7. Give them 15 minutes warnings to finish whatever they are doing before calling them to dinner or moving on to the next activity.
8. Reprimand them privately.
9. Teach them new skills privately, rather than in public
10. Enable him to find one friend who has similar interests and abilities. Encourage this relationship even if the friend moves.
11. Do not push them to make lots of friends.
12. Respect their Introversion. Don’t try to make them Extroverts.

From the Tumblr, The Daily Huff,  that posted the above came this post for Extroverts:

  1. Respect their need to share, to ‘talk it out.’ They get their energy from other people.
  2. Just as with introverts, never embarrass them in public. If you do embarrass them in public, go along as much as is reasonable if they play it off like a joke.
  3. Don’t be surprised if they dive into a new situation headfirst. Don’t freak out either if they flounder a little. They’ll find their way.
  4. Extroverts blurt. It’s the nature of the beast. Most try to leaven it with charm, but try to be patient when they don’t.
  5. Expect interruptions that may seem rude, to some. Most of the time, they mean well.
  6. Build surprise into your lives together. Most extroverts love the thrill of not knowing what’s up – as long as it’s positive.
  7. Be prepared for what looks like ADD. The organically outgoing among us feed off the environment around them. They are often the best multi-taskers around, so understand that they are often paying much more attention to you than you think they are.
  8. A flashover temper goes with the extroverted personality. The bad thing is it can look like a much more severe storm than it is. The good thing is it’s over quickly.
  9. Many extroverts live for the intuitive leap. They reach for it. If teaching an extrovert something new, have patience with them jumping ahead of you.
  10. They will always have lots of friends. But most extroverts have a core of best friends, and their loyalty can be fierce and aggressive if they feel the need to defend those friends. As with so many aspects of the extroverted personality, you may have to be patient with this.
  11. They love compliments, but can usually see right through insincere flattery. Well-timed encouragement, though, can help an extrovert soar.
  12. Respect their extroversion. Don’t try to pin them to your board or cage them. And do them a favor, if you are not yourself outgoing, extroverted – gently but persistently remind them to read something like this as often as possible. They probably will need the reminders.

4 Home Security Measures for Single Parents

security camera

Your home is a haven where you and your children should feel safe and secure. As a single parent, you may feel worried about the sole responsibility you carry to ensure the safety of your home. There are a number of ways you can increase your home security, with the inclusion of essential tools, security systems, safety practices and preparedness. Here are the best ways you should empower yourself to handle any security situation within your home:

Lighting

Brighten the outdoor perimeter of your house with motion detection flood lights. The lights will sense movement of any sort and illuminate any visitors or intruders, in the dark night. Make sure you place lights on all sides of your house, rather than just near the entrances. You can also illuminate the paths around your house or your gardens with lights. This is a nice landscape design touch and will also create more visibility around the exterior of your home. The addition of outdoor lighting will deter intruders and will provide you with visible reassurance. If you have a two-story home, purchase light timers for both stories. A light timer will make it look as though someone is actively in your house and will deter any burglars.

Cameras

Equip your home with security cameras, so you can see everything that occurs in and around your home. Place cameras near the exterior entrances and within the main rooms in your home. For extra assurance that your little one has eyes on them, at all times, place a camera in his or her nursery or room. The Lorex WiFi security cameras connect the monitoring system to a wireless network, which lets you watch security footage of your house from your smartphone. The cameras are weather durable, vandal resistant, equipped with night vision and record 25 frames-per-second.

Security Standards

Make sure you always keep your doors and windows locked, even when you are home. Also keep your blinds and curtains shut for privacy and protection. Utilize a home security system, while you are asleep or out of the house. Ackerman can help provide customized home security systems that will give you peace of mind. You can control your home from your smartphone or web-enabled device, which allows you to lock your doors, arm your security system and receive security notifications in the event of an intrusion. Create a neighborhood watch, within your community, so you have security support. Neighborhood watch programs deter criminal activity and keep everyone aware of safety threats.

Emergency Training

Create a break-in plan, for yourself, so you can quickly respond to a home intrusion. Lay out the safest spots in the house and the measures you could take to protect yourself from an intruder. You could make your child’s room the safekeep of the home, where you keep an emergency telephone, gear for protection and tablet that will help you set off your security alarm. Also, equip yourself with self defense knowledge. Take a self defense class that will teach you how you can effectively defend yourself from an attacker. Classes are generally offered through community centers or at a local martial arts instruction center.

Be safe!

OBGYN Group to Women: Plan How Many Kids You Want to Have for Life

pregnant women plan

Women need to plan how many children they intend to have their entire life, a new report from an OBGYN practitioners association recommends.

A new committee opinion released by the Association Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AGOG) says that each visit at an OBGYN must include discussion about reproductive plans for life.

The group defines “reproductive life plan” as “a set of personal goals regarding whether, when, and how to have children based on individual priorities, resources, and values.”

Each year, approximately 51 percent of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. There are serious repercussions obviously from unplanned pregnancies, but the group understands that limited access to contraception, inconsistent use of protection, or even lack of education.

So doctor visits open up an opportune time for education.

The group recommends that  medical professionals offer contraceptive advice, share information about all available contraceptive methods, educate women on the importance of child spacing, make women aware of affordable contraceptive options and support initiatives that break down racial, socio economical and ethnic inequalities that contribute to unplanned pregnancy rates.

They also need to make sure women have an understanding about spacing pregnancies as well.

ACOG recommends that each woman think about not just a short-term plan, but a long-term roadmap as well.

Remembering Amber Hagerman on the 20th Anniversary of the ‘Amber Alert’ System

amber hagerman

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Amber Alert system which is credited for helping to safely find over 800 abducted children since its inception.

The alert system is named for a little 9-year old Dallas, Texas girl Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped while riding her bike outside an abandoned Winn-Dixie grocery store parking lot and later found dead in a drain.

At the time of her abduction, there was no statewide or nationwide system in place to alert law enforcement and the public in general to be on the look out for clues to help locate lost and abducted children. Following Amber’s death, her parents worked with lawmakers and child advocates to get the system in place.

When a missing child case is selected to become an Amber alert, the alerts interrupt regular programming and are broadcast on radio and television and Department of Transportation highway signs.

Sadly, Amber’s murder remains unsolved, but we are happy that her legacy can live on in the name of the 800 children who have been discovered and reunited with their loved ones after being taken or lost.

Rest in peace, Amber.

How Many of These Old Wives Tales Baby Gender Predictors do You Know? (INFOGRAPHIC)

As soon as a woman becomes pregnant, one of the first things on her mind is the gender of the baby. These days, there are chromosomal tests that can confirm the baby’s sex from as early as 6 weeks and some genetics tests being researched to detect earlier. For most women, they have to wait until around 16 to 20 weeks when the baby’s genitals start to be visible via an ultrasound. Pooh!

If you can’t wait that long, you can consider some of the abundant old wives’ tales there out there that the Pregnancy Zone has assembled into this infographic on the topic.

Sorcery! One Week Post-Delivery These 2 Celeb’s Tummy Look Like This?

It’s quite easy to blame sorcery for this:

One week after delivering baby girls, these two celebrity women who had really tiny baby bumps all pregnancy long, bounced back tremendously and showed it off on their Instagram pages.

Reality TV star and TV host Coco Austin gave birth to her first child, daughter, Chanel Nicole, with actor & TV co-host husband Ice-T on November 28.

She posted a photo of her before and after really tiny post birth tummy one week later.

Similarly, R&B singer Teyana Taylor welcomed her first child, daughter Imani, with her NBA star fiancé Iman Shumpert on December 16, and 6 days later took to Instagram to thank God for her bounce back.

“Dear Baby Iman…. Thank you for this snap back in 6 days,” Taylor captioned the photo caption. “I love you my darling. Lol #AintNoGymBih #StillGotALongWayToGoButImGettimgThere.”

The comment section to each post was filled with pregnant women praying to God that they look like that post baby.

God can do amazing things, for the Faithful who believe in him, but these two ladies’ respective speedy recovery was more likely due to the fact they were fit and pretty small before and throughout their pregnancy.

And in the case of Coco, she explained that she ate extremely healthy.

Good for them, following in the footsteps of these celebrity women here and here and here.

However, as I always caution in these situations, each woman’s body is different. Most women do not and should not expect similar body bounce back as another and most definitely, as a celebrity. Many of them have the extra help of nannies, personal chefs, personal trainers and a career that depends on a super quick bounce back.

Austin told US Weekly that as well.

“My friends were like, ‘Wait until the last month: Your bump is really gonna pop!’ But then I was nine months and I looked like I was just six months,” she told the mag. “Not every woman has the same pregnancy. I don’t really know what to say other than I have nothing to prove, and she’s here now.”

The wide spread impact of influential women sharing their amazing post-baby bodies (and gossip mags too) is pregorexia and unrealistic expectations among the general population about how a post-natal body should look.

Further, I imagine women rushing to he gym too soon  after giving birth to speed up the recovery rather than bonding with their baby and giving their body time to heal.

This is very true especially for those who have had c-sections because one small straining move could cause a tear in their c-section incision and wind them back in the hospital if they don’t hemorrhage and die.

Yeah. Not worth it when you put it in proper perspective.

Eco-Friday: 5 Herbs to Get you Through Cold and Flu Season

Bellyitch Rewind

herbs1
We are well into cold and flu season. Before reaching for over-the-counter medication to cure a cold, flu or cough, consider giving a try one of these 5 must-have herbs to beat winter illnesses, as suggested by Dr. Christopher Hobbs, director of Herbal Science at Rainbow Light:

1. Chamomile – Traditionally revered for easing digestive woes, this herb also soothes muscle cramps, headaches, body aches, and pains associated with the flu. The key to success is to use the freshest herb possible, whether fresh or in dried form.

2. Echinacea – This powerful herb triggers  your immune response and helps reduce the severity and duration of unpleasant cold and flu symptoms.

3. Elder – Historically known for prevention and treatment of the cold and flu, this herb also has potent anti-viral properties which make it effective in easing and reducing duration of fevers.

4. Fennel– This herb is used worldwide to help ease the symptoms of bronchitis, coughs and muscular pains.

5. Honeysuckle – An herb used in traditional Chinese medicine for relief of upper respiratory tract infections, fevers, bronchitis and sore throat.

Of course, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you will want to conduct your doctor before taking any herbs. Good luck and stay healthy, if you can!
