People are Naming Their Kids After ‘Empire’ Characters & Instagram Filters Now

empire

Yup! Baby Center compiled its annual list of baby names for 2015 and the results showed that Empire characters, Instagram filters, YouTube stars, teen fiction, video game heroines, royalty,  names of space and planets and even vices like names of booze, drugs, gambling, and guns, were all on the rise!

After analyzing 340,000 names of babies born in 2015, the popular parenting website found names of Empire television show characters surge or make a comeback.

Dre was up 77%, Lyon grew 6% and Hakeem was up 55%. The name Lucious returned to the list for the first time in three years.

Instagram

Hard to believe but Instagram filter-inspired baby names started gaining popularity in 2015: Lux (up 75% since 2014), Ludwig (up 42%) and Amaro (up 26%) for boys, and Valencia (up 26%) and Juno (up 30%) for girls.

Whoa! At least no Xpro-II yet.

“They’re looking for something unique, but not unheard of,” BabyCenter’s global Editor-in-Chief Linda Murray told Today , also explaining that, “You take these precious moments in your life and [a filter] makes them even more beautiful, it enhances them. I think people have just really warm feelings about that and these names come into their consciousness.”

Space

Parents also looked to the stars and space for names: Venus is up 68%, Jupiter is up 50%, Sunny is up 43% for boys and 18% for girls. Soleil (French for Sun) climbed 28%, Moon rose 4% and Luna and Stella took off.

Royals

Royalty-inspired names also saw an uptick. So there were more:  Royalty (up 88 %) , Royal (up 14%), Duchess (up 75%), Princess (up 22%), and Regina (Italian and Latin for queen) rose 5 percent.

For boys, regal names exerted power over baby boy names as Royal was up 36% and Reign up 54% after Kourtney Kardashian named her son that last year. Prince was up 10%, King (up 8%), Noble and Sovereign (both up 7%). Sultan, Cesar, Kaiser and Emperor also increased.

Video Game

Popular again were names from video games characters: Joule (ReCore), Meryl (Metal Gear Solid) Helena,  (Dead or Alive, Gears of War) Rayne (BloodRayne)  Jade (Beyond Good & Evil) gained 19 percent, Joanna (Perfect Dark)  Jill (Resident Evil)  all rose.

Vice Squad

Want beer or money? Name your baby that. Cash climbed as a name for boys (11%) and girls (46%). Beer names like Bud (up 69%) , Colt (up 12%), Miller (up 15%) jumped too.

Here are the top 10 most popular baby names of 2015:

Tamera Mowry-Housley’s Breastfeeding Instagram Photo Gets Mostly Love

mowry breastfeeding

Tamera Mowry-Housley became the latest celebrity to post a photo of herself breastfeeding a newborn in social media. The photo, posted on her Instagram page last week on November 27, accompanied a blog post on the topic where she also revealed her struggles breastfeeding her first born, son, Aden.

“Breastfeeding Ariah has been amazing, in large part because I learned a lot from my experience with Aden,” the TV host of The Real captioned the photo. ”

In the post, she reflects on the challenges of nursing her son:

I know I’m not the only woman to have felt this way. In fact, I didn’t have it as bad as some women do. Breastfeeding can come easy and it can be nearly impossible. There are a ton of reasons for this, but the one that affected me was Aden’s latch. It took some time, but I finally learned how to get the right latch, and then breastfeeding was much easier. Let me tell you you, if breastfeeding is important to you, do not leave the hospital unless you’ve had the right latch with your baby!

The experience made her nervous about breastfeeding her daughter, Ariah, now 4-months old.

When it came time tobreastfeed Ariah, I have to admit I was a little worried. I wanted to be sure that I could give her my antibodies, feed her nutrients and give her enough of my milk to help prevent her from getting sick. Thankfully my worries were unwarranted. I took everything I learned from my experience with Aden and Ariah had the perfect latch from day one. The nurses even commented that they wished Ariah could teach the other babies there! Lol.

Indeed it was a different experience, she added:

Where breastfeeding with Aden was challenging, with Ariah it’s been unbelievable. I can’t fully express how it actually feels, but the bond it’s building between us is amazing. I cherish every second I can sit down and feed her. It’s our private time together, and I really find it so relaxing. It makes me feel good to know that I can give her everything that her body needs, and I plan to do so until she’s one year. And women must do what’s right for their baby–which can include bottle feeding of course. In that case, I’ve discovered that Gentle Gerber formula is best!

I’ve learned to trust my baby. I hope hearing my story will help any new mommas out there!

Good job! We’ve talked about the benefits of celebrities sharing their breastfeeding journey and stories, not only to inspire others to try, but also to share that they are not alone with struggles, as Mowry-Housley did. Often times, when they do, outspoken folks call them fame whores exploiting their babies for attention.  But we noticed most of the comments about Mowry-Houeley’s have been supportive, perhaps because she also shared her challenges as well.

breeastfeeding-controversy1

We didn’t see the same level of admonition from the breastfeeding shaming public as we’ve seen in the past  (Jessie James Decker, Alyssa Milano, Model Ashley Nicole , Eric Benet’s wife Manuela Tostolini, ) so maybe this means people are slowly getting over it. Who knows.

Bravo!

Attention English-Only Adocates: New US Census Reports Say 380 Languages are Spoken in America

foreign language bellyitchblog.com

Last Friday, an Iowa woman sitting with her husband at an Applebees restaurant got upset at hearing a fellow patron speaking a foreign language and allegedly attacked the non-English speaking diner.

That woman, Jodie Marie Burchard-Risch, should be prepared to leave the US if that upset her because there are more than 380 languages spoken in homes in the United States, according to US Census reports released this week.

Twenty percent or 1 in 5 Americans over age 5 speak a language at home other than English.

Yup!

And we think that US Presidential candidates that want to make US the official language ought to take note as well that the nation they will be leading is quite international and cosmopolitan.

The majority (54%) of Reisdents in metro areas spoke a language other than English in their home.

In the DC area, where Bellyitch Blog is based, 25% of DC households or 1 in 4 are non-English speaking homes.  New York city boasts the most languages 192, with 1/3 of its residents speaking a foreign language at home.  The San Francisco Bay area came in second with 163.

Nationally, the Census reports state that even though English remains the dominant language, there are over 37.4 million Spanish speaking homes, 2.9 million Chinese-speakers, 1.3 million French, 1.1 million Korean, 1.1 million German, 1.4 million Vietnamese, 924,573 Arabic, 1.6 million Tagalog and 879,434 Russian speakers.

Contrary to popular belief, the data,  gleaned from Census information from 2009 to 2013, suggests that Asian-American immigrants have a harder time learning English than Hispanic immigrants.

Whoa!

jama attack
And back to the story in our lede about the woman attacked for speaking a foreign language.

Asma Jama was dining with several members of her family including children under 11-years old when Burchard-Risch, sitting at a nearby table, expressed frustration over hearing Jama speak in Swahili.

Jana recounted whet she told Burchard-Risch before the confrontation turned violent.

“Ok, ma’am, I can speak English obviously. I live in this country,” Jama told Fox9 news.” If you want me to speak to you in English, I can but if I am talking to my family, I can speak whatever language I want. After all, this is America, Freedom of Speech.”

After a verbal back and forth, Jama says Burchard-Risch threw a large beer mug at her face which later required 17 stitches in her lip that will take weeks to heal, Fox9 reports. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Jama offset the medical cost for her treatment from the attack.

The US is rapidly changing in demographics and complexity and it’s time to be aware of it and adjust.

Knowing the number of languages and how many speak these languages in a particular area provides valuable information to policymakers, planners and researchers, Language Magazine analyzes.

STUDY: Teens Spend more Time on Digital Screens than Sleeping or Learning in School

teen screen time bellyitchblog.com

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that a new report found that teens and tweens spend a lot of time watching TV, videos and movies, playing video games, reading, listening to music and checking social media, but you might be somewhat shocked (I was!) by just how much time.

On any given day, teens in the United States spend about nine hours using media for their enjoyment, according to the report by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents and educators navigate the world of media and technology.

Let’s just put nine hours in context for a second. That’s more time than teens typically spend sleeping, and more time than they spend with their parents and teachers. And the nine hours does not include time spent using media at school or for their homework.

Tweens, identified as children 8 to 12, spend about six hours, on average, consuming media, the report found.

Phew! Pregnancy #2 is Smoother Sailing for Kelly Clarkson

kelly clarkson

Kelly Clarkson is having a much better second pregnancy. The multi-platinum powerhouse singer looked fresh and upbeat at the Citizen Watch Company‘s New York Corporate Offices Grand Opening yesterday, wearing a cute charcoal grey tuxedo blazer and black and white striped blouse over black cuffed jeans.

The American Idol season one winner had a rough pregnancy with now 1-year old daughter River, she told BBC‘s “Radio 1 Breakfast Show”. “Like, I was hospitalized. It was jut kind of a bad pregnancy, so I had to take off way more than normal.”

This time is easier sailing. The “Heartbreak Song” singer announced the news of her pregnancy mid-concert during this summer’s “Piece By Piece” international tour.

She eventually had to cancel the final legs of that tour by doctor’s orders to rest her voice, but it will also give the second-time mom-to-be a chance to take it easier and prepare for life with two kids under 2. River was born just last year June 2014 and her son will be delivered early winter 2016.

Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock are still practically newly-weds having just married in October 2013.
