Review: 1 Pound a Day: The Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet will help you lose weight but it’s not easy!

After packing on 11 pounds from October thru December during the Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas holiday gluttony, I was stoked to finally check out Dr. Roni DeLuz and James Hester‘s “1 Pound a Day: The Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet.”   I was offered the book to review summer but honestly, kept putting off starting the detox because I knew it would require me to strictly eliminate many items from my regular diet and I knew that would be hard to do during the holidays.
The book is a follow up to the duo’s New York Times bestselling “21 Pounds in 21 Days.” which took anxious dieters by storm and got a lot of people excited because of the promise for rapid weight loss the healthy way. In sum, the diet is really a detox from toxins in the body and from pollution we are exposed to daily.  You essentially become an overnight vegan. It requires users to only drink juiced fruits and vegetables, pureed soups and broths with water for 21 days, then add back solids and other eliminated foods back in slowly for the following 9 days. You’re supposed to eliminate caffeine, alcohol, all solids, dairy and other vices from the diet as the body works to expel toxins from the body.  The book contains ample soup recipes, testimonials of success cases and other advice and pointers on food, how different types of food affect the body and various herbs, and other natural elements and food that are good for the body.
It’s a strict regimen and not easy to do.  You definitely need some will power or a sincere interest to complete it before even trying it. If anyone is thinking of doing it, he or she should read the book cover-to-cover first and get indoctrinated in all the benefits of detoxing.  Also, those who are carrying extra weight that they want to get rid of and are serious should also read it thoroughly because it provides the other reasons to detox beyond just weight loss. Knowing the greater good may help a person stay on it.
On the first two days, I had a caffeine headache because I did not wean myself off of my cup of coffee a day addiction. I just went cold-turkey which I do NOT recommend. It’s probably best to come down by doing half-caffe for a few days, then gradually eliminate it.  After those initial days, things got better.  Surprisingly, I did not experience hunger pangs on  the diet.but that is because I planned. I purchased sufficient broths, and made adequate amount of soups in advance so I could just have some whenever I wanted to satiate hunger. Also, I did not let myself get too hungry before getting more soup or juiced juice.
I took a multi-vitamin to keep me energized throughout the day, and took enzymes in pills, green juice, probiotic capsules to replace good bacteria lost during detox, and a sugar-control herbal supplement.
The effect is a flatter tummy within the first 2 weeks on the system, and better bodily fluid movement and riddance of any and all bloating and gas.  For extra credit, you can take a homemade detox bath, or body wrap or make an appointment to see a hydrocolontherapist. There are recipes and instructions on how to do these or where to find a colonic specialist.
In a nutshell, the book is really just the 21 in 21 book but with an added 9 days that teaches you how to come off the detox better so you do not relapse too quickly into bad eating habits and pack the pounds back on. I lost about 20 pounds on it and since wrapping it up last week and have NOT felt the need to go back to coffee, sugar and all my other bad eating habits.  To keep off the weight lost and continue on the downward trek in inches and weight loss, I am also adding back my regular exercise in my routine. I started ballet and running again.  I plan to incorporate some of the eating advice from the book along with advice I got from another eating session I took last year around this time to maintain.  I am also getting an exercise jump start with a celebrity trainer this week as well.
James Hester and Dr. Roni DeLuz
While this diet/detox isn’t an option for the faint of heart or for those with little to no will power, it does work. But like most weight-loss efforts that include eliminating certain types of foods from your diet altogether, there is a high risk of getting back all the pounds lost if users don’t alter their eating and exercise habits after wards. I learned Radio veteran Robin Quivers of The Howard Stern show did it and got super skinny but has since packed back on more weight than before.
Overall, it’s still a good way to kick start a lifestyle change, to quickly unload some excess weight gained (like from overindulgence from the Holidays) or to prepare for an event like a wedding, reunion, red carpet event or the like.
Get the book from my Affiliate partner at Amazon.com for $19.07 hardback or $13.25 softback.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book complimentary to test out the rules within the book and provide my honest feedback.

RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman: Celeb moms tweet condolences

This weekend, Hollywood mourns the loss of a great actor, Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose body of work includes a plethora of rich, interesting and developed characters he brought to life in a way only he could. Whether he was playing an awkward porn industry assistant in Boogie Nightsa sinister agent in The Talented Mr. Ripley a blowhard in Almost Famous, a colorful and flamboyant game maker in The Hunger Games  or the complicated Truman Capote who he won a Best Actor Academy Award portraying, Hoffman brought his A-game to each role and made you believe he truly was whomever he was pretending to be on screen.
Sadly, he also was crippled by drug addiction which ultimately did him in as he was discovered in his New York city apartment yesterday, Sunday, February 2, with a heroine needle in his arm, dead from an apparent overdose.
Yesterday, some of the women we have “bumpwatched” and covered in the past tweeted out words of remorse over Hoffman’s passing:

Empowering girls helps reduce teen pregnancy

When  Oklahoma mom Shana Davis was in high school, 17 of the 35 kids in her graduating class were teen parents.

Davis, who attended the Cherokee County Teen Pregnancy Task Force this past Thursday night, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma said she did not want to become one of the 36-year-old grandmothers she saw growing up and be trapped in her county for life.

“I knew at a young age if I put myself in those risky behaviors, I’d be in that county forever,” Davis said. “I was determined to have more for myself.”

The takeaway from the session as summarized by The Tahlequahdaily Press:

When teens understand they have choices beyond high school they make better decisions when it comes to sex. Parents who talk to their children before they become pre-teens and teens, establishing a relationship of communication and understanding, seem to be a major factor in the success of a youth making good choices.

Empowering teens is one way to help reduce the epidemic of teen pregnancy.

Of course, sometimes parents want their kids educated but are not prepared to give answers.

Another attendee community nurse Rebekah Craig’s 11-year old son came home one day asking what “chlamydia” was. He had heard the term in the hall at school.

“It wasn’t a conversation I wanted to have on a Tuesday night,” Craig said. “But it was a teachable moment. So we talked about it.” Fortunately, Craig was educated in medial technology and had plenty tools.

Even though the focus was on empowering teen, the session was also  for parents who, like Davis,do not want to raise grandchildren while still relatively young themselves.

“It’s a lot of stress and energy to raise a grandchild or great-grandchild, and it effects it whole community,” another attendee, Wauneta Duvall said. “I see a lot of people doing that.”

Barbara Williams,  a preventionist with Cherokee Nation Behavorial Health said her mother didn’t tell her anything about sex, adding that her mom’s mom “didn’t tell her anything.”

In her sex-ed and teen prevention program, Williams said what the teens want to know and what their parents want to know are two different things.

She works to help parents talk to their teens with a goal to develop mature, goal-oriented teens, interested in college instead of boyfriends, burdened with babies.

2014 Grammy Red Carpet, On Stage & Behind-the-Scenes (PHOTOS)

Last night, the biggest names in music hit the red carpet to the Staples Center in Los Angeles,California on January 26 for the 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards and celebration. We took to Grammy’s mobile app to live Instagram and share some of the Red Carpet, On Stage and Behind-the-Scenes imagery and photos of the night, starring many of the moms current and past that we’ve “bumpwatched.” We start with Alicia Keys who looked stunning in an electric blue plunging Armani Prive dress with hubby Swizz Beatz.
Beyonce won the night in this lace curve-hugging Michael Costello fish tail dress with  Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Christian Louboutin heels.

Another relatively new mom, Amber Rose, looked amaze in a gorge gold Naeem Khan floor length curve-hugging dress.

Another one of our pretty new  moms Anna Faris looked amazing in this midnight blue Fitranni dress with a slight train.

Ciara rocked her bump in a shimmery bronze floor-length Emilio Pucci gown.

Giuliana Rancic made the BEST dressed list with this crimson lace overlay Alex Perry resort 2014 dress and Marina B jewls. Gorg!

P!nk accompanied hubby Carey Hart while showing off her toned bod in a red Johanna Johnson dress.

Sweet. Erica Campbell of the group Mary Mary had her daughter for her date last night while wearing a two piece lace top and skirt. It was a modest and approporiate look considering all the hoopla over her solo album cover.

Madonna and son David did the 20s zoot suit styling by Ralph Lauren

Fantasia Barino
went with a neutral-toned slip dress with a red halter strap under a black lace see-through dress with crimson lip and a cute bowl pixie cut. Confusing look.

Also rocking her new pixie cut was Jennifer Hudson, who didn’t go to the Grammys but was spotted on the red carpet to Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy party that occurs the night before the Grammys at the famed Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills. Jennifer Hudson wore a  colorful Christopher Kane dress.

At that same event was actress Paula Patton in a crimson Mireille Dagher Couture fall 2014 lace mini dress with a plunging neckline, worn with Louboutin pumps and David Yurman jewels.

Pink’s aerial performance has become an anticipated breath of fresh air for award shows. She’s done it a few times before and stuns audiences each time.

Look at that strength and balance. Amazing.

The night opened with a saucy solo and duet by Beyonce and Jay Z performing Bey’s song Drunk In Love off her latest self-titled 5th solo studio album. The outfit was by Nichole de Carle which was accented with Saint Laurent tights,  Stuart Weitzman Mary Jane dance shoes, a La Perla Collar, and custom bra, and Jennifer Fisher jewelry Jay wore a Tom Ford  tux.
Academy-Award nominee Julia Roberts was a presenter.

Producer of the Year Grammy winner Pharrell Williams was the talk of the show with his interesting forest ranger hat, seen here cutting up with Jay and Bey backstage.

And again with another pop star royal couple Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

7 Practical Tips for teaching Financial Literacy to Children

January has been designated National Financial Wellness month in the U.S.  It’s a good time for parents to make  resolutions that are achievable for themselves but it can also serve as teachable moments for children. The average adult will make thousands of financial decisions during the next year, including many which will be made with kids watching or listening.
“Parents need to do something totally different when it comes to their children learning the basic principles surrounding personal finance. I believe we are way beyond the point when stressing the use of piggy banks
and comic books as the tools to learn about managing money is a good idea. We live in a world which uses terms like ‘Bitcoin’ and ‘Cashless Society’, yet as parents we expect our children to fend for themselves or learn with antiquated methods using nickles, dimes and bills stuffed in a plastic pig!” says Greg Murset, CEO of MyJobChart.com  a free, easy to use, online and mobile job chart and reward system designed to teach, organize and motivate kids to earn, save, share and spend responsibly. “Help your child be financially smart by teaching them in more relevant ways and reinforcing working for what they want, saving for the future, spending wisely and donating money when they can to help others.”
To help move your children in the right direction in 2014, Murset offer the following out of the box suggestions:
1. No More Hand Outs. Start the year off right by deciding that you are not going to just shell out money to your kids anymore.  When they come to looking for money, let them know that they will have to work for it.  The bank is now closed unless they start pulling their weight a little more around the house. Tying work and reward together in some meaningful ways will help them understand responsibility and accountability. It will also help them understand that in real life, no one ever gets money for doing nothing.
2. Smash The Piggy Bank. Piggy Banks are a bad way to teach kids about money.  That’s right, take that piggy bank and smash it or throw it away.  Long gone are the days when we should be teaching our kids about money by dropping coins into a bank that looks like a pig, jar or favorite sport team mascot.  Using banks like these only teach children about money in a manner that isn’t as relevant anymore.  Get them a real bank account and teach them how to manage their money though online services.  It is far more useful to learn to manage money in a bank rather than a pig.

3. Make Kids Pay… For The Cell Phone, That Is. According to Consumer Reports the average mobile phone user spends about $600 a year.  If you do the math, you’re going to be shocked at how much you are going to be shelling out over the years so that your kids can send hundreds of meaningless texts each month to their friends!  Kids should pay some, or all of their phone bill each month. This is a perfect opportunity for you to sit down and teach your children about how much things cost, especially things that they seem to think they are entitled to for some reason.  This is also a great time to discuss the things that they can do around the house to earn the money to help pay that bill.
4. Play The Match Game. Set up a matching program for your kids.  They save a dollar and you match that dollar.  Yes, 100% return.  Sit down and determine what they would like to save for and then set out to accomplish it together.  This is a great opportunity to talk about short term, mid-term and long term goals. When a child learns the power of savings like this at an early age, what do you think will happen when they get their first job and they learn about the 401(k) program that is available?
5. Comic Books To Teach Kids About Money?  Now That’s Just Dumb. Last year Visa teamed up with Marvel to put a comic book together to teach kids about personal banking practices.  Talk about a square peg in a round hole.  They supposedly were going to distribute 150,000 of these square pegs in eight different languages.  Why does something as important as personal finance have to be jammed into little white blurbs above super heroes heads in a comic book? Parents should be fighting to get personal finance taught in our schools, this way, comic books can remain fun.
6. Make Them Better Givers. No matter how your children earn their money, make sure they plan to donate a portion of it to a charity of their choice. The average American gives away about 4% of their annual income to charity and perhaps that percentage would increase if the next generation made giving a common practice as soon as they learned how to throw coins into a bucket.

7. Set Goals That Are Meaningful. A start of a new year is a great time to sit down with children and talk goals.  Meaningful goals. Help your children put together a plan on working toward and saving for something significant. It could be a bike, musical instrument, laptop computer or go-kart. The more meaningful the item, the harder our kids will work to earn it and they will take care of it.
With these suggestions, hopefully our children will be well equipped to avoid useless spending and learn great habits for the future.
