When Ciara showed up to the 2014 MusicCares Gala in a navy Lanvin mens style pinstripe suit, many scrubbed their chins, cocked their heads and went, “hmmmm.” Not all were convinced at how fashion forward the look was for maternity wear.
Little did they know she was only channeling the spirit of her fore-mothers who rocked Androgynous maternity before her.
Behold:
Ciara has been wearing androgynous looks this pregnancy like Beyonce & Kim Kardashian did before her. |
Androgynous models are coveted in high-end fashion, but the trend toward gender-neutral clothing has only just begun to reach the sports world, with NBA stars Russell Westbrook and Dwyane Wade blurring the lines in their tight jeans and fitted sweaters. No sports apparel company has taken it a step further and expressly targeted the gender-fluid crowd — and whether Nike is willing to ride the edge with Griner remains to be seen. “We can’t get into specifics,” says Nike spokesman Brian Strong, “but it’s safe to say we jumped at the opportunity to work with her because she breaks the mold.
The former Baylor women’s player and current Phoenix Mercury star won the ESPY award for best female athlete in 2011 and rocked the red carpet in men’s wear the following two years.
The era of androgyny has been a thing for a while now, but is mos def an “in” thing again.

The Fashion CulturalistFirst-time mom-to-be Ashley Graham covers the January 2020 edition of VOGUE, photographed by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.
The Sports Illustrated cover model shared a photo of the cover of her draped in a gold down cradling her bump. A second photo she shared featured Graham with her husband Justin Ervin bare-chested standing behind his wife cradling her belly on a beach.
Draped in gilded “Oscar de la Renta” caftan, the model looks radiant in her first solo cover for the U.S. edition of the fashion publication.
Inside the mag, Graham discusses social media’s “baby bump” obsession), what her mom pals Kim Kardashian, Amy Schumer and Serena Williams taught her about motherhood and her struggle to find support during this complete life change.
“I’ve always had control over my body — when everyone else wanted to dictate what it should be, I took full control over it — but I had this life inside of me saying, ‘It’s not yours anymore, it’s mine,‘” says Graham. “I was gaining weight rapidly. And I felt alone. And the one piece of advice that my stylist, Jordan Foster, gave me was, ‘Make pregnant friends.’ None of my friends were in relationships, let alone pregnant. And now I have nine pregnant friends.”
“When I look at this picture, I get so emotional because this moment feels bigger than me,” she captioned the post. “It’s indicative of our entire relationship – my husband @mrjustinervin supporting me ALWAYS from day one.”
The model continues, “I’m overwhelmed with so much joy and filled with such gratitude that we are doing this together ? Thank You Thank You Thank You.”
Readers in New York City and Los Angeles, California can nab a copy of the January 2020 issue today and nationwide on Dec. 17. To see more photos from Graham’s photo shoot, styled by fashion editor Tonne Goodman, and to read her full interview, visit Vogue.com.
My fave part is about Williams who parrots everything chronicled on this blog. Woot! Yes sis!:
“Serena Williams wonders if it all started with Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991, naked and pregnant, shocking all the squeamish prudes and church ladies. “I was only 10 at the time,” says Williams, “but I remember thinking that was cool.” Ten years later, when Us Weekly focused its attention on questionable gossip and paparazzi shots of actresses pumping gas in Beverly Hills, the whole bizarro obsession with the “baby bump” took off. Tabloid copycats escalated their pursuit of the possibly pregnant, raising it to the level of stalking. One afternoon of bloat while leaving The Ivy and suddenly: IS JENNIFER PREGNANT? And then social media came along and women began to own their narrative by curating the journey of getting and being pregnant and giving birth and bouncing back—or not.
“I think it’s a good thing,” says Williams, “but it also puts a lot of pressure on women. For me, the whole lie about ‘the snap back’ was what bothered me. I had a little problem with the lies of girls on Instagram—like, coming out of the hospital holding the baby and . . . you know . . . looking thinner than before. That’s not happening to me! That’s one thing I’ve learned, and the thing I tell Ashley: Everybody—literally every body—is different. You might jump back in an hour. I didn’t.”
This latest season of Keeping Up with The Kardashians started with the eldest of the sisters Kourtney Kardashian in tears over being told by sister Kim that she (Kourt)is the least interesting to look at.
That was over 6 months ago when the show taped and since then, Kourtney has ”cougared” her way through at least two different romantic partners who were years her junior and had made up for being told she isn’t interesting by posting a series of super sexy photos in social media.
Before, I think I can fairly say she was the last Kardashian that a lot of regulars folksy moms could relate to. She kept it rated PG and mom-focused.
The reality Tv star’s image rebrand worked to catch the eye of GQ Mexico editors, at least, who feature her in its double winter issue.
In the photo, the 39-year old wears a long sleeve black turtleneck and no bottoms it appears.
To say the image, posted in IG, took many of her 70 million fans and followers by surprise is an understatement!
While she got a lot of love in the comment section, I can say a significant amount were body shaming ones and women expressing disappointment and stating the image will bring shame to her kids.
I don’t want to contribute too much to them by amplifying them so you can go to her post and read them for yourself.
ETA: This is not the first time, Kourt has posted a nude photo of herself from a fashion spread. She did so in 2017, and while preggers in 2014 in Vanity Fair!
Still, this close up one is quite different.
What do you think!? Let’s talk about it in social! Find me @bellyitch on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram!
Real Housewives of Atlanta alum, Kenya Moore Daly continues to be dogged with and by rumors that she is faking her pregnancy and it seems no matter how many bare bump photos or pics of her cast mates cradling her belly she posts, there are always people in her comments expressing disbelief that the 47-year old former Miss USA is really expecting her first child.
Even recently, when she posted a cute Instagram photo of her hubby restauranteur Marc Daly feeling her baby kicks, she still had haters decrying the authenticity of the moment. Ugh!
She was all smiles in the photo captioned, “#marcdaly wasn’t ready for #babydaly’s kicks today ?❤️#babybump#babykicks #ThatsMrsDalyToYou.”
It is amazing to me. She is not the only one. Beyonce and Danielle Jonas both were trolled all Pregnancy and beyond when they each had their first kid.
Kim Kardashian was too and was BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills former cast member Adrienne Maloof but way after the fact.
One season of the hit series focused on a rumor that Maloof had used a surrogate to birth her children so as not to “ruin” her body, but lied about actually being pregnant and going through labor and delivery to save face and not come off as being a superficial and vain person.
Meanwhile, who aren’t accused of faking their pregnancy?
Celeb women who barely look pregnant even at 5-months along like Remy Ma or who undergo an entire 40 weeks pregnant undetected and just crop up with a set of twins like Anna Kournikiva did!
It is quite interesting to me who gets the suspect treatment and who escapes it.
In an new exclusive interview with the three of the women of the Kardashian clan who are moms, Kylie Jenner, Khole and Kim Kardashian West, E! News uncovers the women’s deepest thoughts and opinions about motherhood.
