2014 Academy Awards Red Carpet: Celebrity Mom Nominees take over (PHOTOS)

Last night, all the A-List stars came out to shine at the 86th annual Academy Awards show at the Hollywood & Highland Center  on Sunday, March 2.
It was a night of firsts as Lupita Nyong’o, Best Supporting Actress winner, became the first African to win an Oscar and the film that made her a star 12 Years A Slave became the first movie directed by a black person, Steve McQueen, to win Best Picture in the award show’s history.
It’s awesome because the story is based on an autobiography written by Solomon Northup about his real life experience being born a free man but kidnapped by sinister smugglers and forced to live as a slave for 12 years of his life. The screenplay adaptation was a black guy too, John Ridley, making it the first time a story of slavery told from those whose ancestors endured it was recognized by the institution.  In other words, this wasn’t the romanticized Gone With the Wind version of that sordid past but a song of truth from those who lived it and endured under it. The acknowledgment last night is being characterized as a win for history.
But enough heavy stuff. Now to fashion!
A couple of our bumpwatch moms, Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde looked absolutely amazing on the red carpet. Washington went with a lovely lavender Jason Wu  Goddess dress set to loose cascading curls and dark magenta lips. Her hands dripped in Jennifer Meyer Jewels and she went with jeweled silver Christian Louboutin pumps and a Judith Leiber bag.
Meanwhile, Wilde looked gorgeous in a black Valentino dress as well as she appeared on the carpet with her fiance Jason Sudeikis. The couple are expecting their first child together this year.
Another baby bump that stole the red carpet was that of gorgeous Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky who is expecting twins with her super hot hubby Chris Hemsworth. This will be the second and third children for the couple that are already parents to a one year old.
Other past Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms and other moms and parents to hit the carpet who caught our eye included:
Lincoln’s mama Kristen Bell  looked super fab with her super cinched in waist in that embellished jeweled Roberto Cavalli corset and fishtail skirt. She did the light blue box clutch and accented with Piaget Jewels and Brian Atwood heels. Love it!
Julia Roberts looked a bit awkward with her pose in a black Givency peplum dress with black lace underlay. The Best Supporting Actress nominee for her role in August Osage accented her look with  Bvlagari jewels. Roberts won a Best Actress Oscar when she portrayed Erin Brockovich in 2000.
Camila Alves wore a satin draped Gabriela Cadena gown with a matching clutch while accompanying her husband who later won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture award for his role in Dallas Buyer’s Club, Matthew McCongaughey who looked dapper in a Dolce & Gabbana tux.
Sandra Bullock was old Hollywood glam in a stunning Alexander McQueen dark blue gown featuring sweetheart cut neckline and draping. The look worked for the actress who won in year’s past for her 2009 role in The Blind Side.
Charlize Theron gave us life in her custom  Christian Dior Couture gown and what looks like a super sheer skirt revealing a svelte silhouette. Theron won a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal in the 2003 movie Monster.
Kate Hudson was va va Glam in  a silver satin long sleeved Atelier Versace. Hudson was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Penny Lane in Almost Famous.
Angelina Jolie accompanied her husband Brad Pitt who executive produced the movie that walked away with the Best Film award 12 Years A Slave.  Jolie, who looked gorgeous in a jeweled Elie Saab gown with sheer sleeve last night, got an Academy Best Supporting nod in 2009 for  a role in Changeling.
Penélope Cruz was all pinked out in Giambattista Valli looking like a Roman goddess. Interesting look. Cruz was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the 2009 film Nine, for 2008’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona and 2006’s Volver.
Well we guess we were wrong about Jessica Biel being on the bump watch list. Clearly, her tiny waste in a strapless Chanel Couture 2014 gown shot down that rumor.
But Jennifer Garner is still mom to three and looked amazing in an Oscar de la Renta dress with matching purse and silver Brian Atwood platform peek-a-boo pumps. Garner starred in Dallas Buyer’s Club.

Before announcing the Best Film winner on stage last night, Will Smith wowed in Berluti and his wife, one of our Mom Style icons Jada Pinkett Smith looked stunning in Atelier Versace. Fabu!
Giuliana Rancic  looked breathless in Paolo Sebastian Couture. The reality TV star and hostess has been on point for a steady while now since she quit with the quirky selections or earlier years.
Finally, Pink looked amaze in her shimmery Elie Saab red floor-length gown with the plunging neckline and belted waist.  She performed a dedication to the 75th anniversary of the movie The Wizard of Oz.

45th Annual NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet Fashion: Kerry Washington & others who wowed (PHOTOS)

Last night, some of our current and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch and other moms hit the red carpet to the  45th NAACP Image Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on February 22, 2014.
Scandal actress and first time mom-to-be Kerry Washington stunned in a custom Thakoon NY dress, Christian Louboutin shoes, a brada clutch and Suzanne Kalan ring.
The  and her cast took home the award for the Outstanding Drama Series award.  She looked stunning pictured with actors Tony Goldwyn, Scott Foley, Columbus Short, Katie Lowes, Darby Stanchfield, Joe Morton, Bellamy Young, and Guillermo Diaz,

Idris Elba, Best Actor nominee for  Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom  and Dad-to-be and with girlfriend Naya Garth, looked dapper in a fitted tux and Louboutin “Dada” flats while posing with 2014 Award season “It” girl actress Lupita  Nyong’o of 12 Years A Slave.  Elba won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for his role in Luther
Nyong’o took home the Best Actress award for her role in that movie award and  looked amazing in a plunging neckline burnt orange Givenchy  pre-Fall 2014 gown with matching sandals and box clutch from the designer with her hair in a parted afro-puff. She acceneted the look with an H. Stern gold cuff and dangling earrings.

A more recent Bellyitch bumpwatch mom Nia Long was nominated for her role in House of Lies and wowed in a jade green  Nicole Miller halter gown Brian Atwood heels, a Salvatore Ferragamo nude basket-weave clutch and Danielle Queller earrings.

Our winner for best body winner actress Regina King, who was nominated for outstanding actress in a drama series, turned heads in Michael Costello, who seems to be the go-to designer for Black Hollywood but seemed to miss in this ill fitting black mermaid dress that looked to constrain the SouthLAnd  star’s toned torso too much.

We have covered mom and soon-to-be surrogate TV personality Sherri Shepherd of The View in the past and last night she worked magic in an off the shoulder shimmery Carmen Marc Valvo gown. The unexpected blue nails were a plus, with the statement accent pieces.
One of the very first moms we featured for being the first to have a reality TV special following her pregnancy, singer and actress Brandy Norwood, won the  Image award for “Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” for her role on BET’s The Game.  She looked darling and sexy in a black cut out dress during the non-televised dinner show and again the next day during the televised portion of the show in a Jean Fares Couture black lace embellished gown with nude lining.

Even though she didn’t win for her wonderful and talented work in The Butler, advice mom to the world, Ms. Oprah Winfrey looked dazzling in her burnt orange dress while paying tribute to the late Nelson Mandela who we lost earlier this year.

Mommy Wars: How the Start-Up mom has it THE HARDEST

“Many mothers find it difficult to raise a family and try to run a business because both the children and the business take a lot of time all by themselves,” an article on the Top 3 Reasons Mothers don’t Start Up in ParentStartup.com states. Another New York Times piece and another  recent article talked about how Venture Capitalist discriminate against mothers.
From that NYT piece:

“[M]uch of the investment world, heavily dominated by men, remains skeptical about a woman’s ability to combine running a fast-growing tech start-up and motherhood, Ms. Gugnani says. She raised $3 million from investors before becoming pregnant.

“All of the women I know who went to raise money did it when they didn’t have kids,” she says. “There is total discrimination in the start-up world against women who are pregnant.”

Making pregnancy and motherhood a focal point of the investment process is an outdated way of thinking, she adds.

Female entrepreneurs are less numerous and raise less money than their male counterparts. Women make up 10 percent of the founders at high-growth tech companies, “and they raise 70 percent less money than men do because of their lack of access to capital,” says Lesa Mitchell of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, where she is vice president for initiatives on advancing innovation.”

And so, the “Start-up mom” joins the Mommy Wars.

Background:

The mommy wars is an ongoing battle between mothers disputing and discussing which child rearing method is best: Sleep in Room v Nursery; Bottle-feeding v. Breastfeeding; Baby wearing v. Carrier; Sling v. Bjorn; Cry It Out v. Not; Heavily Scheduled baby v. Let baby control sleep and eating.

Moms are opinionated and each one believes her method or solution is tops. Of course, to each its own but that doesn’t stop those who have hard-fast thoughts on one thing from speaking up and trying to convince others this. They will not be silenced. They may bully others into their perspective.

Another mommy battle is the battle between Stay-at-Home (SAHM) versus Work-at-home (WAHM) versus Working Moms. Working moms often feel SAHM guilt trip them over spending less time with their children. Meanwhile, SAHMs say they feel belittled by Working Moms who assume they do nothing all day but eat bonbons while their kids are at school. Working Moms say SAHMs are privileged enough to not have to work yet judge those harshly who do. Work-at-home moms say they have the best and worst of each scenario.

Now that the Start Up mom has been brought into the picture, as a work-at home Start up mom, I proffer that the Start-up or Entrepreneurial mom has it THE HARDEST.
Why?
While start up moms do have the luxury of being able to chaperon school field trips, attend school meetings and take our kids to the library as I do daily, they also have the challenge of having to clean the home, provide meals, and be a homemaker all while not bringing income but expected to.
Unlike the SAHM who is not expected to bring in external income, the Start-up mom has to contribute to the family expenses.
Unlike the Working Mom or Work-at-home who is working for a company and at least bringing in guaranteed income, the Start-up mom works for no one and has to go out and generate income from independent sources.
The Start-Up Mom has to bring home the bacon by working 50 hour weeks trying to build a company that makes little to no money that may never be successful enough to generate income or funding.
And she has a tough haul raising money to fund her venture, considering that recent Business Insider story revealing how the VC industry discriminates against mothers.
It’s a hard uphill battle to bear along with the other family responsibility on our backs.
Yeah, we have it the hardest!

Mini-Me Versions of 2014 Grammy Awards Red Carpet

Little and Real Lupita Nyong’o
Albeit belated, we wanted to share New York photographer Tricia Messeroux‘s recreations of the red carpet looks from this year’s Grammy Awards for those of you who might not have seen them already!
Messeroux and her team do an excellent job to quickly put out a casting call for children who resemble the stars who walked the red carpet at high profile celebrity events and awards shows just days before. Afterwards, she outfights the tiny child-sized versions of the stars in miniature versions of the gowns, tuxes and clothing as the celebs. She gets the looks right, down to the accessories and their rock star antics!
Sometimes, the mini-me versions look even more fab than the star they are dressed up to resemble! Yeah. We said it.
Enjoy!

REVIEW: TriBeCa Film’s “Expecting” captures female bonding in fertility/surrogacy dramedy (TRAILER)

If you are thinking of catching a movie to watch at home for date night or girls’ night in, consider downloading “ Expecting”.

This Jessie McCormack written and

directed film presents an unconventional pregnancy story through the peculiar lives

of a quirky yet human and relatable ensemble cast starring Boston Public’s  Michelle

Monaghan
.  Her character Andie, a

sexually liberated free-spirit who resists the traps of aging and responsibility,

winds up accidentally pregnant from a one-night stand. She volunteers to give up

her baby to her best friend Lizzie (Radha

Mitchell
of horror film Silent Hill) who is having troubles

conceiving with her husband of several years Peter (Jon Dore).
For sake of convenience, Andie

moves in with the two-some and soon personalities clash and three become a

crowd. The cramped quarters become more constrained when Peter’s substance abuse recovering adult adoptive

brother, Casey (Michael Weston), shacks

up with the non-traditional trio temporarily after completing rehab at the insistence

of a guilt-ridden and paternalistic Peter who wants to make sure Casey doesn’t

relapse again.
The mix of hormones, anxiety, tension, cigarettes, emotions,

unresolved angst and uncertainty blend to create some pretty interesting

exchanges during the nine months the awkward grouping is forcibly glued together.

Lizzie and Peter’s couple

therapist Dr. Grayson (MiMi Kenney )

rounds off the eclectic mix of characters but just to interject some forced clichéd

psych visits. It’s really extra and could’ve been left out.

The movie really centers around

the bond and friendship between Andie and Lizzie and is much a story about

female friendships, and it works given a woman wrote and directed

the project.
The film deals with themes related

to the challenges that couples must and should consider before getting married because when one partner is not that gung ho

about kids and another one is, you can imagine how much of a challenge that

could be if fertility issues crop up.
This film may be a portrayal of something you or someone you know is going through right now
Michelle Monaghan –
The movie also explores all the

various options and complex considerations couples deal with when they discover

they are infertile: adoption, in vitro fertilization, and surrogacy. It tackles

these issues in a situational drama with bursts of comedic interplay thrown in.

It’s heartwarming at spots, uncomfortable at others, and almost unrealistic

elsewhere.  Without giving away too much,

the story has an unsurprising ending which is still a little disappointing, but

not necessarily bad. [ Okay, that was confusing It’s hard to be revealing while

trying not to be too revealing here.] Let’s just say there is a reason to go through the formalized steps when opting for surrogacy.
It’s not much of a feel-good story, though you will enjoy some of the many human moments weaved within. Mitchell’s character is sympathetic in her longing to become a mother. It will get you thinking and is quite entertaining

overall. The 90-minutes goes by fast.
Monaghan, who currently stars as a

detective in the new HBO crime drama

True

Detective,
is a standout and her personality, as depicted through her

character, shines through the screen. She seemingly was typecast in this film

considering the fact she played Robert Downey Jr’s character’s pregnant wife in the 2010 film Due Date.
And it was art imitating life because Monaghan and her hubby since 2005 Peter White welcomed their very own

real live baby, their second child, son Tommy

Francis
on October 30 2013 after the film debuted at TriBeCa Film Festival last year. Tommy joined big sis Willow Katherine who is 4.
“Expecting” is available on

iTunes, Google Play, Amazon on demand and Vulu via The TriBeCa Film Festival site.
