10 Ways to Toddler Proof Your Home

girl-1561943_1280

As soon as infants become mobile they are suddenly gifted with the ability to get into everything that they can reach. When those infants then become toddlers that are able to walk, climb, and run through the house, parenting can feel more like a full-contact sport than anything else. Toddler-proofing your house requires more than slapping on a set of cabinet locks, though they are still a worthwhile investment. The average home is host to a staggering array of safety hazards, most of which aren’t immediately apparent to first-time parents of a newly-upright and mobile child. To keep your inquisitive little one safe and sound, here are ten tips for creating a safer home environment.

  1. Amend Your Cooking Habits – When you’re childless, or when an infant is safely tucked away in a bassinet, there’s not much focus on making sure that you choose back burners whenever possible and that you turn all pot and pan handles inward. The moment your little bundle of joy starts walking, however, it’s imperative to condition yourself to do just that. Reducing the risk of dangerous spills that can land on a child, or scalding food splattering onto his skin, by adjusting your cooking behavior is an important part of toddler-proofing the kitchen.
  2. Wrap and Conceal Electrical Cords and Wires – Wires that are visible, especially those hanging loose in bundles along the floor behind the entertainment center, should be wrapped tightly and concealed or secured so that little fingers can’t reach them. Pulling these wires can not only damage your appliances and components, but also send them toppling onto a curious child.
  3. Cover Outlets – Every new parent receives a handful of plastic outlet plugs that are designed to keep little fingers out of the dangerous current. They’re perfectly capable of doing the job when crawling infants are at eye level with outlets, but observant toddlers can figure out how to pull them out of the wall by watching his parents remove them to use the outlet. Investing in slightly more complex full outlet plates can foil your little genius’s attempts to access the wall plugs, keeping them safe from harm.
  4. Secure Shelving Units – It doesn’t take long for toddlers to learn that something that was previously out of reach of their questing fingers can be accessed by climbing. Shelves, dressers, and any other furniture that can possibly give a toddler an invitation for scaling it is subject to just that; while it’s best to discourage this type of behavior, it’s also a good idea to make sure that shelves are securely attached to the wall to prevent a dangerous tip-over if your child does climb onto them when you’re out of sight.
  5. Use Non-Skid Mats in Bathtubs – The moment your child can stand up, he will start to do so in the bathtub. Though you should never leave any child unattended in the bathtub, a non-skid mat can help you prevent nasty falls resulting from little feet than can’t quite manage slippery, wet tub surfaces.
  6. Lock Sliding Doors – Sliding a patio door open is, in many cases, easier for little kids to do than adults realize. Kids can slip outside in the blink of an eye by applying the slightest bit of pressure to the door, so make sure that you keep sliding doors locked at all times. It may also be wise to attach removable decals on glass doors at toddler-eye-level, to keep your child from running headlong into a transparent glass panel.
  7. Keep Medications In Childproof Containers, Out of Sight and Out of Reach – Reuters Health reported in 2011 that the number of children who end up in the emergency room due to accidental poisoning with prescription medications do so as a result of  accessing them themselves. Keeping medications in purses or bags and under bathroom cabinets, especially in easy-to-open containers rather than the childproof variety they’re originally dispensed in, is a risky proposition. Instead, make sure that all medication remains in childproof containers, and that all of those containers are kept well out of reach and sight. A safe or lock box is an ideal place to store medication.
  8. Use Safety Gates, But Realize That They’re Fallible – The baby gate is a perennial favorite of parents, especially those with stairs. While they can be very useful and effective, parents should remember that they’re not entirely foolproof, and that kids should still be supervised in an area with dangerous stairs.
  9. Install Window Guards – Window guards prevent children from tumbling out of second and even first-floor windows, whether they’re deliberately opened for air circulation or lifted by a curious toddler. The Consumer Products Safety Commission reports that an estimated 4,000 injuries occur as a result of falls from household windows annually, so don’t overlook the windows while you’re toddler-proofing.
  10. Set the Water Heater at 120° – If you didn’t turn your hot water heater’s temperature setting to 120° when your little one was born, it’s a wise move to do so now that he’s walking. Scalds are one of the most common types of burns that emergency room doctors see with their smaller-set patients, so making sure that your hot water never reaches excessive temperatures is best.

Rather than relying solely on your childproofing measures, it’s best to monitor your toddler and help him learn safe habits through direction and instruction. If you do, when he’s older and toddler-proof measures are removed, he’ll understand that some things are still dangerous to play with.

British TV Host Rochelle Humes’s Hosting Gig Forced Pregnancy News Ouster

rochelle-humes-and-marvin

It turns out that our guesses were right that second-time mom-to-be Rochelle Humes is in her second trimester. The British girl band member who also starred in a one-season E! TV reality TV show, Chasing the Saturdays,  told the audience during a taping of the ITV show Loose Women that she was “surprised” her friends kept her pregnancy a secret.

Her husband, Marvin Humes, a former boy band member  of the British group JLS and currently a Capital FM DJ said last week that she was close to six months pregnant

They would have waited longer but a TV gig thwarted that plan.

She had to go public with her news because she and Marvin were part of the hosting team for BBC charity telethon ‘Children In Need’ , the Daily Mirror reports, and her stylist told her that she wouldn’t be able to hide her bump on television.

“It’s amazing, [Rochelle] is doing so well and she’s a real trooper. She’s nearly six months – she’s only a week away from being six months,” Marvin told  Daily Mail, Marvin. “She looks great and we’re so lucky we’re having a second child,” Marvin added. “We’re really, really excited.”

The couple are parents to 3-year old daughter Alaia-Mai and said they will not find out the baby’s sex until it is born.

“We thought it would be nice to keep it a surprise,” Marvin revealed. “We’re going to wait and see.”

Rochelle, who is a TV host of the British show The Next Great Magician almost found out the news when a psychic to the stars, including to Kim Kardashian West, wrote down the baby’s gender on a card and placed it in an envelope. The host of the show offered to reveal it but Rochelle passed because she suspected the psychic would be right.

Certainly, that would ruin the whole ‘wait and see’ thing for sure.

Keshia Knight-Pulliam shares 3D Sonogram, Reflects Her Rollercoaster Year

knp

First-time mom-to-be Keshia Knight-Pulliam used Thanksgiving to share with her Instagram followers the lessons she’s learned from the roller coaster year she has had.

The star, best known for her role as the character “Rudy Huxtable” on the 1980s comedy “The Cosby Show”, used the occasion to share a sonogram of her soon-to-be-born daughter, she has decided to name Ella Grace. She captioned the 3D image with a heartfelt message.

“This has been this single most challenging year of my life. However, I wake up this Thanksgiving more grateful & in awe of God’s power than ever,” she wrote.

“Thru it all this little face has kept me going & helped me tap into strength I didn’t even know I possess. I am so eternally grateful for my little Ella. I would not trade any of what I have gone thru for her. She is my greatest accomplishment & joy. She has inspired my smile even thru the tears. I am so proud she has chosen me to be her mommy… #Grateful #ThereIsAlwaysARainbowAfterTheStorm #IfICanDoItSoCanYou”

Pulliam and her estranged husband, former NFL player Ed Hartwell are undergoing a divorce after Hartwell filed for the formal separation days after she announced that they were expecting their first child. The couple only married in January this year after a very brief courtship.

The actress also casually dropped the fact that she has been one of the few women fortunate to not have gotten stretch marks while pregnant…yet.

Hold on, girl. They appear during that last month but hopefully she can stave them off for the entire pregnancy. My mom had four children and has zero stretch marks on her belly! Lucky!

A little over a month ago, members of her Kamp Kizzy surprised her with a baby shower

And earlier, she was gifted with a bunch of stuff from Marquee Communications which represents a bunch of baby and pregnancy related brands! Nice

Don’t Buy Your Next Stroller Until You Take this Quiz & Read These 5 Tips!

stroller system

Are you in the market for a new stroller? Then you know that it is one of the first things that new parents consider when they find out they are expecting. The stroller may be an investment that lasts beyond just one baby. The universe of stroller options have opened up tremendously in recent years and it is not uncommon for one family to have 5 or more strollers for varying needs:  a carriage or buggy, a canopy stroller, a convertable stroller, an umbrella stroller, a stroller that is part of a travel system.

This interactive quiz will assess your personal needs and help you narrow down a specific stroller for your budget, current and future needs and your personal situation.  Take it and then see if what was selected for you matches well with these 5 tips:

Picking the right one (or ones) can be dizzying.  Here are five great tips, we’ve brought back from a past post, for picking out the perfect stroller for your needs:
  1. Determine your stroller needs. Consider where you live and how you will be using your stroller.  If you plan to exercise or jog with your baby, you may want to consider a jogging stroller.  Its big wheels will help smooth out the ride over any rough terrain.  Wait until your baby is a few months old before using a jogging stroller because they aren’t recommended for newborns.  Jogging strollers are large and don’t fold down compactly for fitting in the trunk, which is problematic for parents who opt to use a jogging stroller as their primary stroller. They also don’t steer well in tight spaces so they may be better suited as a specialized second stroller.  If you live in the city and you plan to mostly run errands with the stroller you will be looking for one that folds easily and doesn’t take up a lot of space in the car.  Modular or Multi-component systems (think Britax B-Ready or UppaBaby Vista) are the most expensive, but also the most versatile.  They can contain a bassinet, single seat, or second seat, and these options snap on to a base frame so that you can customize your stroller and add to it as your child and needs grow. They also accommodate most infant car seats. The Britax B-Ready also accommodates two seats. Twin or double strollers are a must if you have two young children.  Seats can be side-by-side, stadium style, or tandem. Travel systems are often bulky and heavy, but allow you to keep your baby in the car seat when strolling. When your baby outgrows the car seat, he can use the stroller seat.
  2. Decide on a budget. Umbrella strollers range in price from $15.89 to $199.95 or more.  The cheapest umbrella stroller is very basic with a simple 3-point strap to hold the baby onto the fabric seat.  The top priced umbrella strollers boasts solid construction, are lightweight (14lbs.), have an infinite-position reclining seat, are easy to fold, have a one-step brake, carrying strap, and a parent cup holder.  Jogging strollers can range from low $100’s up to $500 or more.  Modular systems are purchased in pieces so prices will vary, but the frames typically cost around $400.  Regular single strollers range in price from the low $100’s to $400 or more depending on the features that you are looking for.  Twin strollers are priced in the mid $100’s and go up to $450 or more, again depending on what options the strollers have.
  3. Create a checklist of features you want/need. Essential features for strollers include a five-point harness, a multi-position reclining seat, sun canopy, swivel wheels for mobility, easy folding system, stroller basket, easy to clean fabric, and a lightweight frame.  Additional luxury features include: adjustable handles, one-touch brakes, snack or play tray, parent cup holder, and an adjustable footrest to customize as the child grows.
  4. Assess what size will work for you. Determine if you are looking for a stroller for one, two, or more children to help narrow your stroller search.  Strollers vary in weight from 6lbs to around 25lbs. or more.   Jogging strollers are large and bulky, but can also be very light.  Full-sized strollers fold down easily, offering many options for taking the baby along on errands.  If you live in the city and don’t have a lot of room to store the stroller you may want to look at models that fold down very compactly.
  5. Check for consumer reviews on the model you’re looking at before you buy. Consumer reviews on strollers will be grouped by price, expert recommendations, and what the public thinks of the stroller.  Once you’ve narrowed down what you will be doing with the stroller, how many children the stroller needs to hold, what bells and whistles you need, and what price you’re willing to spend on it, it’s time to select your top choices of strollers.  Read how others rate the strollers that you are interested in to further narrow your search.

Final tip: If buying a used stroller make sure to check the recall list to make sure the stroller hasn’t been recalled.

10 Toys that Gender Socialize Girls

In most cultures and societies, there tends to be a separation of the sexes, from the roles they play to the careers they hold. From the very moment they are born there seems to be a divide between the two genders, with boys receiving blue caps and girls wearing pink bonnets. Even many of the toys children play with seem to have gender-specific objectives and marketing campaigns. Some of today’s parents are concerned with the societal pressure on their daughters to adhere to traditional gender roles, while others encourage their little girls to embrace intense femininity. Regardless of which side of the white-picket fence you sit on, there’s no denying that some toys that are marketed specifically to girls that will spark their imagination for fairytale balls, pretend dress-up and happily ever after play time.

  1. Play Kitchens and Cooking Sets – Generally, play kitchenettes are offered in pastel pinks and purples or the occasional baby-chick yellow. They can appeal to little girls with colorful cupcakes and pastel cookies as the main dishes, but rarely are they ever offered in gender-neutral colors.

2. Baby Dolls – Baby dolls are designed to instill maternal qualities in little girls, but aren’t marketed to little boys. There are dolls that simply open and shut their eyes with a tilt of the head, dolls that can be nursed with a bottle and dolls that need to be fully soothed in order to help them stop crying, but they’re almost always wearing pink.

3. Fashion Dolls – There are all sorts of fashion dolls on the market that are geared to strike the fancy of little girls, including the ubiquitous, iconic fashion doll that started the entire craze. With waist length hair and every accessory you can think of, these kinds of dolls may encourage a feminine approach to play time and life-like scenarios, but their marketing campaigns tend to exclusively target little girls.

4. Doll Houses – Doll houses usually come equipped with a handful of dolls that reflect the picture perfect family unit, pet pooch included, along with all of the linens and dishes to make a proper house and home. You can find them in an array of colors, but most seem to be in the classically girly pink and purple shades.

5. Tea Party – Matching cups and saucers, a teapot and little plastic pastries make for proper tea time with all of a little girl’s dollies and stuffed animals. These dainty sets are definitively feminine, featuring flowers or princesses rather than gender-neutral primary colors or symbols.

6. Costumes  – Little girls love to play dress-up, a bit of knowledge fully exploited by toy designers and their marketing departments. There are tons of costumes on the shelves, but they almost always tend to be feminine. Some are generic princesses with fancy dresses, tiaras and sparkly shoes and some are recreations of iconic outfits from the animated movie screen. On the other hand, the clothing worn by princes and knights never seems to be available.

7. Jewelry – You can purchase sets of bracelets, clip-on earrings, a “diamond” ring and a string of “pearls” in just about any color a little girl desires; perfect for accessorizing for any pretend date with prince charming.

8. Fairytale Character Dolls – Most female characters in fairytales play some sort of princess or damsel in distress role. Generally, they are quite beautiful and have long flowing locks that can signify traditional femininity. These dolls are not, however, designed to be appealing to the young male set.

9. Cosmetic Sets – There are an endless array of kid-centric cosmetic sets you can buy for your little girl that come with pink blushes, shiny lip glosses and a palette of pastel eye shadows. These kinds of toys will teach her how to perfectly powder her little button nose, a skill society doesn’t expect young boys to master.

10. Vanity Sets – The iconic image of a young girl sitting at an ornate vanity, giving her flowing hair the requisite hundred strokes with a hairbrush, is one that’s ingrained in the collective consciousness. There are even busts with long hair aimed at budding hair stylists; these toys are almost always cast in traditionally feminine colors to attract the eye of little girls.

The strategic marketing behind toys is culture based and consumer driven. There is a growing trend of toys marketed with more educational appeal to girls. Building blocks and construction sets now come in girl-suitable colors. These types of toys can help improve spatial thinking, which can also improve math and science skills. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your little girl to be made of sugar and spice and everything nice, but if you’re struck with a sense of frustration as to where to turn for gender-neutral toys to foster your little girl’s imagination, let the Internet be your guide. Large corporate toy stores have aisles drenched in pink, clearly targeting girls, with few toys that appeal to both genders. If you still find yourself battling the marketing giant’s appeal and gender-biased approach to lure your daughter into role-specific play-time, you may find the toys your child wants without the added gender bias from online merchants.

Hilaria Baldwin gives Birth, Shows Postpartum Belly 24 Hours Later

hilaria baldwin

Congratulations to Hilaria and Alec Baldwin on the birth of their third child, a son, the couple named Leonardo.

As the professional yoga instructor did after giving birth to her other children, she shared a mirror selfie of her post-delivery bump, after just 24 house after welcoming her newborn.

“I took this yesterday when Leonardo was about 24 hours old,” Hilaria, who is married to Alec Baldwin, wrote alongside the snap. “I did the same thing right after Rafael was born. It always makes me a bit nervous to do something like this, but I feel that in the age of such strong body shaming, I want to do all that I can to normalize a real body and promote healthy self esteem.”

I took this yesterday when Leonardo was about 24 hours old. I did the same thing right after Rafael was born. It always makes me a bit nervous to do something like this, but I feel that in the age of such strong body shaming, I want to do all that I can to normalize a real body and promote healthy self esteem. Many of you know that I love to show the process of life’s experiences on the body and I am a firm believer in how a good diet and the right balance of exercise make us happy, healthy, and strong. So from here on, I want to dedicate the majority of my #366daysoflivingclearly #hilarialcm daily posts to getting back in shape and I invite you to do it with me ❤️??. Common questions last time were: Did I have a c section?: No, I pushed him out Where are all the pads for bleeding?: I took them out briefly to snap this pic as there is a limit to how much you need to see ?. Where am I?: in the hospital room bathroom #glamour Oh, and no filter. Just brightened it up a bit.

5 Self-Care Tips for Brand New Moms

self care

When you are a new mom, you have to deal with a lot of pressure and stress of taking care of your newborn, dealing with the stresses of work, spouse or maybe another child in the home you are caring for. Self-care is often last on the list of concerns, but it shouldn’t be.

The transitional weeks between end of summer and early fall often prove unexpectedly hectic. As families try to squeeze in one more long weekend, unearth a few extra days of vacation, or begin to gear up for the busy fall season, this time of year typically feels anything but relaxing. Factor a newborn into that mix, and stress levels can skyrocket, causing new Moms to feel pressured and exhausted as they struggle to adjust to the changes brought about by the arrival of a new baby.

For those of you who have just given birth or are due to welcome your new arrival this fall, the makers of Water Wipes, curated a list of five things you should consider to ease your anxiety and stress level as the Autumn season begins.

  • Push Back Against Pressure: Don’t feel pressured to plan that final weekend getaway or start reorganizing closets for the upcoming change of seasons – spend these early weeks focused on your newborn and getting used to your new life.
  • Turn Off the Noise: New Moms get a lot of advice – online and off; solicited and unsolicited. If it becomes overwhelming, don’t hesitate to focus solely on what works for you and your baby. Remember, you are all your baby needs!
  • Try Saying “No:” With fall right around the corner, invitations will soon begin to arrive – from friends and organizations alike – looking to reconnect after the long summer. In these first few weeks of your baby’s life, do what’s right for the both of you – not what’s expected – and remember “no” is an OK response.
  • Turn Baby Care into Bonding Time: To help feel more confident about caring for your baby, look for opportunities to turn baby care basics – such as diaper-changing – into bonding time. After wiping and diapering, place baby skin-to-skin against your chest and take note of your natural ability to calm and soothe your newborn.
  • Think Instincts: Moms intuitively know how to care for their new babies – but it can be difficult to remember that in the middle of the night. Just remember to trust your instincts – and don’t let anything come between you and your newborn.

They also released a video series about three women starting their motherhood journey, and through their first days, other new moms can learn a few things. Check it out and pass it along to a new mom in your life.

We Said It: Celeb Kids Stimulate New Businesses

The Fader published an informative news story recently about how celebrity children are helping to spawn a booming industry for couture kids clothing. It was a topic we’ve blogged about here.

The insightful article also explored the world of Instagram baby swag moms who outfit their children in fashionable chic clothing, and get famous doing so.

We’ve blogged about that trendy phenomena too as discussed before here.

Still, it was great to see the piece quoted an author who validated a concern I have with those baby swag Tumblr and IG pages:

In Kids and Branding in a Digital World, published last year the media theorist Barrie Gunter argues that the success of designer diffusion lines “play[s] on the idea that parents are the source of earliest social learning for their kids,” thereby encouraging parents to project their own brand valuations onto their children. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as Gunter hypothesized, unless children become “overly sensitised to a need to be seen as trendy and fashionable and where self-identity is centrally defined in terms of commercial brand associations.”

One small correction: The Fader piece states that luxury brands started getting into the children’s market beginning in 2010. But on the contrary, beginning in 2008, we began posting a biennial most expensive baby clothes list and Gucci, Chanel and Dior were on it back then too.

Big brands been in the rich babies game.

I did appreciate the inclusion of Australian-based designer Winnie Aoki who dresses Blue Ivy and other celebrity kids in her 5-figure costing originals that each take 300 hours for Aoki to complete.

Aoki, the site pens, was

responsible for the $2,000 dress Blue Ivy wore to her grandmother’s birthday, specializes in kid couture. Aoki crafts dresses from confectionery layers of tulle, sequins, and luxury fabrics under the label Mischka Aoki, named after her own 8-year-old daughter. The dresses, which can take up to 300 hours to craft, frequently come with five-digit price tags. According to her website, Aoki started the brand after she realized there weren’t any clothing options “good enough for her daughter”; for her, “clothes represent style and luxury at the same time.” While it may have been difficult to locate high-end designer clothing for children in 2008, when Mischka was born, the line’s explosive popularity — Aoki has dressed not just Blue Ivy, but North, Penelope Disick, and Suri — is an indicator of the steadily increasing desirability of luxury children’s wear.

It was a well written and researched article. You should check it out here!
