Thanksgiving Travel: Flying With an Infant: How to Avoid Disaster

With Thanksgiving around the corner and some people opting to fly to visit family during the holidays, our blogger Marc Courtiol, is sharing tips on dealing with flying with an infant:
Having a newborn can be stressful enough without leaving the house, so it is easy to understand why so many new parents are reluctant to travel. Babies need constant care, they are unpredictable, and their crying is sometimes difficult to stop. All of these things work against travel, which requires as much predictability as possible. The good news is that many infants fall right to sleep as soon as the plane starts moving, but you just cannot know beforehand. Plus, nobody wants to be those poor parents stuck on an airplane with a baby who refuses to be quiet. That is no one’s idea of a fun vacation.
But you do not have to be scared to travel with your infant. Sure, things may not go perfectly, but the trip does not have to be a disaster. Here are some ideas to keep in mind.
The right attitude
Start preparing by getting in the right mindset for traveling with an infant. Especially if this is your first child, this may require you to alter your view of the world to some extent. For starters, while it is important to be considerate of others, you simply cannot get hung up on what strangers think about you. There are always going to be curmudgeonly people who bellyache when a crying baby is in their vicinity, and there is nothing we can do about them. So just forget about them and focus on your family.
Also, try to approach the whole thing with a sense of calm. The best way to do this is to take it slow. Give yourself plenty of extra time for everything. If you usually leave for the airport two hours early, give yourself two and a half to three hours this time. Move slowly through the trip, and stop to attend to the baby whenever he or she needs anything. If you can cultivate this sort of attitude, your baby will pick up on it and will likely be more calm.
Plan early
Plan your trip as early as possible so you can reserve seats in an optimal row. Exit-row seats are great because they give you extra room to maneuver with the baby. Also, if you have never traveled with an infant before, you might want to call the airline and talk to a real person about their policies. Your baby should be able to fly for free, but many parents choose to buy a seat for their infant anyway for the extra room. Airplanes are generally a tight fit, but a full three-seater in an exit row can be a cozy little temporary home for mommy, daddy, and baby.
Knowing what to bring
When flying with a newborn, the key is to bring as few things as possible while having everything you need to take care of your baby. It can be difficult to find this balance. Here are some things that you definitely need:

A few changes of clothes (bring a couple more than you reasonably expect you will need)
An item or two, especially a blanket or stuffed animal, that smells of home and reminds the baby of safe, comfortable places
Diaper-changing supplies, including a changing pad, sanitizing wipes, and multiple extra diapers
Pastic bags for storing soiled baby clothes
Cloths to wipe spit-up and other substances
If you are breastfeeding, bring a bottle with a little extra milk in case the baby needs to be fed at an inopportune time for breastfeeding.
Other than these crucial items, keep what you pack to a minimum. If your child is a newborn, then she is probably too young to need any books or toys to keep her occupied.
Be prepared to carry
If you have a baby carrier, make sure you have it ready, as maneuvering through the airport, especially the security section, is much easier if the baby is strapped to you rather than in a stroller. Of course, it is fine to bring the stroller on your trip, but treat it like a piece of luggage until you pick it up at your destination.

On the flight, it is fine to keep the baby with you if you have not reserved an extra seat. If you do have an extra seat for the baby, you of course cannot have her sitting on it when the craft is in motion. That is why the airlines recommend bringing your infant car seat and strapping it in if you are not going to be holding the baby through the entire flight. If you do not have too much other luggage, brining that seat is a good idea.

Thanksgiving: 5 Healthy Snacks to make with the kids

Thanksgiving is synonymous with family, friends and an overload of food. So, when it comes to dessert this holiday, skip the pie and substitute with these 5 healthier alternatives. Jenna Fernandes, CEO of CareBooker.com, the only FREE “Open Table” of family and pet care services, offers lighter desserts that are sure to satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth without any guilt this Thanksgiving.
From holiday staples to fall favorites with creative twists, here are five great recipes to try with your family:
1.       The Caramel Apple Bar: This is an activity the whole family can participate in making. Start an assembly line by cutting apples into slices and inserting a candy stick for easier decorating. Once the prep is complete, dip the apples in chocolate or caramel and arrange the family’s favorite toppings such as sprinkles, coconut or crushed candy pieces to top this sweet treat.
2.       Turkey Muffin: Another great dessert to get kids creative with this fun treat for Thanksgiving. First, bake your favorite pumpkin muffin recipe and prep the decorating ingredients. Create the turkey feathers with sliced red and green apples, cut a small beak from a thin slice of carrot and finish off with squeezable icing for eyes. This simple recipe will turn this dessert into an art project.
3.       Yogurt-dipped strawberries: Yogurt-dipped strawberries are a favorite, guilt free dessert that includes healthy Greek yogurt and strawberries. Greek yogurt is high in protein and offers a thicker consistency perfect for dipping. Dip the strawberries in Greek yogurt, set on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and allow them to set in the freezer for one hour before enjoying with friends and family.
4.       Baked Apples: Apples are always a fall favorite and this baked apple recipe will become an instant hit on any family dinner table or dessert party tray this season. After preheating the oven to 350 degrees, slice apples and place in a baking dish. Finish off with a dusting of brown sugar and cinnamon for added fall flavor and bake for 15 minutes.
5.       “Cocoa-Nut” Bananas: This healthy treat is a perfect alternative to the traditional fall flavors. Start with slicing bananas down the middle. Roll each slice in cocoa powder and shake off the excess. Finish these healthy treats by rolling the slices in unsweetened coconut flakes and arrange on a fun tray.

Give Thanks: 15 Volunteer activities your child can do

While Thanksgiving is a season for giving, for children it ends up being a season for receiving only as many lose sight of the fact that the Holidays is also a time for appreciating what you have and about the priceless gifts of family and togetherness that have no price tag.
Thanksgiving can also be a wonderful opportunity to  nurture a spirit of giving to others as well.
A recent Nanny Classifieds post explains the benefits of volunteering, and notes how lending “a hand to someone in need can heighten your child’s sense of self-esteem and self-worth while also providing an opportunity to possibly discover new career options on which to build aspirations.”
In it, there are 15 examples of volunteer activities that children can engage in this Holiday season and beyond to help them appreciate all they have and receive in their lives.
  1. Collect children’s books from family and friends and donate them to a local hospital or library
  2. Sign up for a charity walk to benefit an organization or disease awareness
  3. Donate food to a food pantry by having your child pick out an item each time you shop for groceries
  4. Volunteer to serve meals to the homeless at a local shelter or food pantry
  5. Compile activity boxes, complete with puzzles, coloring books and games, to donate to a children’s center or children’s hospital
  6. Donate a few hours to picking up litter at local parks or roadways
  7. Visit a nursing home and offer to share your talents through musical entertainment or story time
  8. Deliver meals to the homebound (many food pantries offer these services)
  9. Take the kids along as you volunteer to drive an elderly neighbor to the doctor or grocery store
  10. Volunteer to feed, walk and care for abandoned animals at the local animal shelter
  11. Gather several classmates and friends to raise awareness and money to help refugee kids in schools around the world
  12. Recruit the entire family to tutor, mentor or read with younger children
  13. Work with the local Red Cross agency to give blood or organize a community blood drive
  14. Make cards, blankets and stuffed animals for sick children and donate to a local organization who provides care items to hospitals and children’s centers
  15. There are unlimited options for volunteering, both locally and nationally, that you can take advantage of to show children how acts of kindness can significantly impact someone else’s life. Find even more opportunities and learn how to brainstorm and plan family volunteer trips with the PBS Family Guide to Volunteering.
It is recommended to designate a specific day each week for volunteer activities.
“Having children volunteer helps them to get out of themselves,” New Hampshire clinical psychologist Carl Hindy says. “It teaches them social interest, empathy and awareness of others.”

Election Day: 50 Ways to Teach your child about Civic Engagement

Today is election day in the United States. Beyond today and taking your child in with you to the ballot box, here are 50 other ways to teach children about the importance and value of having their voice heard:
1. Take children to the polls with you. Actually schlepping the kids down to the voting booth is a real way to show them the value and importance of voting.  Have them vote on what to eat for dinner.
2. Let your child wear your “I voted” sticker to school the next day.
3. Organize a family field trip to the State House  or the mayor’s office
4. Let the little ones decide what outfit to wear one day.
5. Get out a globe, give it a spin, then look up a random  place on it online or at the library
6. Check out a civics book from the library and go through it with your middle school kid
7. Turn on CNN and let them watch poll results come in, at least briefly.
8. Involve them in your civic activity or volunteer effort, find a way to include your children. It helps them realize their role in society
9. Show them images of your local candidates from one of the many mailers they send
10. Talk to them about Women Suffrage or the Civil Rights Era and other groups battle to get the right to vote
11. Do some online or library research and talk to them about other forms of government in other nations.
12. Find and download a mobile or iPad app that does a great job at teaching civics and democracy
13. Nurture your budding leader. Whenever there is an opportunity for your child who may have shown to you s/he is a budding leader, encourage him or her to run for office, on the very local local level. Your kid would appreciate that the same type of work it takes to get classmates to vote for him/her as a candidate is a micro-version of what goes on in elections for higher offices.

14. Get a trivia board game or cards that includes a section about government and politics and play it with them
15. Visit historical landmarks.
16. Help them register to vote when they turn 18 years old.
17. Teach by example and let them know you are going to research issues and candidates before you vote so they can learn not to rely on others but to do the work to learn more on their own.
18. Take them to a homeless shelter so they can learn that their actions make a difference
19. Order pizza and count the toppings and determine which toppings has the most and use t hat example to teach about voting.
20. Let them volunteer. If there is a civic issue that impacts your community, talk to your child about it and about different ways to help. If you realize your child is inclined to or is interested, encourage him to lead an effort to hold a canned food drive or some other fundraising effort for the cause. It’s a great way to stoke an early interest in being a leader.
21. Let them watch the old School House Rock shorts from the 70s and 80s that teach about how a Bill becomes a law
22. Take them to a School Board meeting so they can see the importance of getting involved with those who make decisions about the schools.
23. Let them pick a topic that matters to them and encourage them to write a letter to the editor of the local paper about that issue.
24. Talk about age-appropriate issues that are in the newspaper each day.
25. Encourage them to write their local representative
26. Design a Civics Jeopardy! Game or find one online to play with them.
27. Look up info about and plan a trip to visit the oldest landmark in your town.
28. Find a charity that you and your family care about and volunteer at an event it plans to teach kids about awareness and responsibility to others.
29. Help them draft up rules for play, chores and civility in the home. Post them up on a posterboard in the kitchen so all can see.
30. Buy or make puzzles of the United States and play with them so they learn about all the different states that make up the union.
31. Talk about the differences in people, culture and topography of the different states so they appreciate the differences in different areas of their country.
32. Talk to them about different people and cultures of the world so they realize the world is a very big place.
33. Pull fun political cartoons from different papers online to look at and try to decode the message in them.
34. Create a survey and have them poll their friends and family so they learn about the importance of gauging other people’s interests and learn how polling works.
35. For the next election, encourage them to volunteer to register voters.
36. For the next election, take them to a political rally.
37. Encourage them to use their Social Media activities for good. Let the young people in your household know that even though they may not be eligible to vote yet, they could certainly encourage friends and family members they interact with who can use social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
38. Take a tour of the city council offices.
39. Take your child to a town hall meeting.
40. Download fun facts about government, the White House, Congress and local governments from online resources.
41. Talk to them about what the different parties stand for.
42. Talk to them about third party candidates and their role in elections over the years.
43. Participate in a live chat or another meet and greet opportunity with your local elected officials.
44. Talk to them about local issues that are of concern to your town, city, community or state.
45. Help them make a collage of state symbols.
46. Have them write a letter to the President.
47. Have them write a letter to a soldier.
48. Get your middle or high schooler to organize a donation drive for the soldiers.
49. Get them to memorize the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.
50. Play a game that helps them memorize the capitals of the different states.
Hopefully, one or a few of these activities will help you grow strong, indepedent thinking, civically- and socially- conscious children.

Which Celeb Mom Does Halloween Best? Heidi Klum, Kelly Ripa, XTina, Fergie, Kim K or Bethenny?

Some celebrity moms are known for their annual elaborate Halloween costumes. We thought we’d share with you our faves and ask which of the following celebrity mom which we’ve featured and “bump watched” in the past does the best Halloween costumes.

Heidi Klum hosts an annual costume gala and succeeds in out besting every person there in her very over-the-top get ups. When she and Seal were married, they did couple costuming with the matching gorillas topping it for me.

Kim Kardashian West usually goes with a sexy version of whatever costume she’s in…no surprise there.  Her Wonder Woman, Little Red Riding Hood, Mermaid and Cat Woman costumes were saucy.

When married to ex Jordan Bratman, the diva with powerful pipes Christina Aguilera dressed in sexy get ups and went as a sexy nurse, sexy cop, and sexy pirate wench. Once she did spooky with a ghost bride and groom.

Meanwhile, annually on her daytime talk show Live! with Kelly and Michael, and before that Live! with Regis and Kelly funny host Kelly Ripa goes as other celebrities. Most famously, she’s dressed as Sarah Palin, Honey BooBoo, Snooki, Cher, Duck Dynasty boys and more recently with her co-host Michael Strahan or Nick Lachey she’s gone as the most talked about couples: Beyonce and Jay Z, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries.

Fergie also goes way over the top and went as a Toddler in a Tiara one year, Cleopatra another then recently she and hubby Josh Duhamel have done spooky going as Elvira and RiffRaff from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Day of the Dead figurines.
No one super pink and elaborate hot and girly like Bethenny Frankel who dressed as candy one year, Marilyn Monroe another, a sexy roller girl from the 70s and a sexy Hello Kitty! grrrrrr!
Love them all! I don’t know who is the best! You tell us!

Remembering Oscar de la Renta: Biography

The fashion world mourns the loss of veteran fashion designer Oscar de la Renta who passed away at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer.
Every American First Lady from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama has worn his designs and he had won every fashion award around; been honored by many philanthropic organizations and given many honorary degrees; and served on several charitable organizations’ boards.
Working right through the end, de la Renta had an eye for women’s fashion.
It figures, he was born Oscar Aristides Ortiz Renta Fiallo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the only boy in a family of 7 children.
He started his fashion career as a student in Madrid selling his fashion illustrations to earn money.
Oscar de la Renta and Audrey Hepburn
The then-young upstart eventually landed a plum job working for Cristobal Balenciaga in Madrid.
“I just learned by looking and observing. He was like God to me. ” Oscar de la Renta has said of Cristobal Balenciaga.

He then moved on to work as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo, before getting a job designing for Elizabeth Arden in Manhattan, New York in America in 1963.
When Arden was reluctant to work with Oscar’s vision to create more ready-to-wear women’s clothing, he departed in 1965 to work for Jane Darby and eventually took over her label after Darby’s death.
“Everything Oscar does is feminine, romantic and appropriate. He’s not out there trying to be revolutionary, he just wants his clothes to be extremely attractive, and appropriate without being ‘old.’  If you look through his collection, he has a signature:  ‘Beautiful Clothes.'”  Anna Wintour, editor and chief of Vogue, has said of de la Renta.
He has stayed true to his aesthetic by refusing to sell out his line and keeping the company in the family.
His son-in-law Alex Bolen currently operates as Chief Executive Officer, and his step-daughter Eliza Bolen serves as Vice President of Licensing, at Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Up until succumbing to cancer, he maintained control over his brand and because of that ensured the consistent quality and vision of his clothing.
He has dressed many of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms-to-be and alums including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tina Fey, Jessica Alba and currently expecting stars Blake Lively and Rahcel Bilson.
Rest in Peace, Oscar.
Godspeed. Thank you for your talent and art. Your vision will live in on in fashion history.

What parents SHOULD be doing during ebola panic

Now that we know two health professionals who treated a man who recently died from  ebola contracted the deadly disease, the outbreak panic is at a fever pitch.
It still is unlikely that there will be a true outbreak in America as there is in West Africa where over 4,000 have died.
Parents in the US should be more concerned with other things to stay hedlthy this winter like the flu!
 1)  Get everyone in the household the flu shot that way you won’t panic if someone were to contract the flu and have you start worrying that it’s something more than that. We can anticipate emergency rooms nationwide being flooded with more flu patients from panicked residents. You don’t want to be caught up in that melee.
Every year, about 36,000 people die from the flu each year, according to the CDC. That’s a real statistic.
2) Continue ritual hand washing.
“One of the most important measures for preventing the spread of pathogens is effective hand washing,” the CDC states. “This hygienic behavior has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of child deaths from diarrhea (the second leading cause of child deaths) by almost half and from pneumonia (the leading cause of child deaths) by one-quarter which together are responsible for approximately 3.5 million child deaths every year.”
Beyond Ebola, with regular hand washing hands with soap, families and communities can help reduce child morbidity rates from diarrheal diseases by almost 50 per cent.”
