Ashley Graham Says Serena Williams, Kim K and Amy Schumer Gave Her Messy Scoop on Pregnancy, Childbirth and Beyond

ashley graham

First-time mom-to-be Ashley Graham covers the January 2020 edition of VOGUE, photographed by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.

The Sports Illustrated cover model shared a photo of the cover of her draped in a gold down cradling her bump. A second photo she shared featured Graham with her husband Justin Ervin bare-chested standing behind his wife cradling her belly on a beach.

Draped in gilded “Oscar de la Renta” caftan, the model looks radiant in her first solo cover for the U.S. edition of the fashion publication.

Inside the mag, Graham discusses social media’s “baby bump” obsession), what her mom pals Kim Kardashian, Amy Schumer and Serena Williams taught her about motherhood and her struggle to find support during this complete life change.

“I’ve always had control over my body — when everyone else wanted to dictate what it should be, I took full control over it — but I had this life inside of me saying, ‘It’s not yours anymore, it’s mine,‘” says Graham. “I was gaining weight rapidly. And I felt alone. And the one piece of advice that my stylist, Jordan Foster, gave me was, ‘Make pregnant friends.’ None of my friends were in relationships, let alone pregnant. And now I have nine pregnant friends.”

“When I look at this picture, I get so emotional because this moment feels bigger than me,” she captioned the post. “It’s indicative of our entire relationship – my husband @mrjustinervin supporting me ALWAYS from day one.”

The model continues, “I’m overwhelmed with so much joy and filled with such gratitude that we are doing this together ? Thank You Thank You Thank You.”

A VOGUE COVER!!! — celebrating inclusivity, mothers, pregnancy and love —  is so surreal. I have dreamed of this moment my entire career since I was a catalogue model living in Nebraska two decades ago. Thank you @voguemagazine and #AnnaWintour for embracing a conversation around pregnancy and motherhood, which can be both incredibly exciting and also isolating. The community and support I have discovered along the way has been incredible, and to share this monumental moment with my son and husband in the pages of Vogue could not feel more special. @annieleibovitz, you made me feel like a true pregnant goddess ? My fave part is about Williams who parrots everything chronicled on this blog. Woot! Yes sis!:

“Serena Williams wonders if it all started with Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991, naked and pregnant, shocking all the squeamish prudes and church ladies. “I was only 10 at the time,” says Williams, “but I remember thinking that was cool.” Ten years later, when Us Weekly focused its attention on questionable gossip and paparazzi shots of actresses pumping gas in Beverly Hills, the whole bizarro obsession with the “baby bump” took off. Tabloid copycats escalated their pursuit of the possibly pregnant, raising it to the level of stalking. One afternoon of bloat while leaving The Ivy and suddenly: IS JENNIFER PREGNANT? And then social media came along and women began to own their narrative by curating the journey of getting and being pregnant and giving birth and bouncing back—or not.

“I think it’s a good thing,” says Williams, “but it also puts a lot of pressure on women. For me, the whole lie about ‘the snap back’ was what bothered me. I had a little problem with the lies of girls on Instagram—like, coming out of the hospital holding the baby and . . . you know . . . looking thinner than before. That’s not happening to me! That’s one thing I’ve learned, and the thing I tell Ashley: Everybody—literally every body—is different. You might jump back in an hour. I didn’t.”

A Look Back at Anne Hathaway’s Stunning Red Carpet Maternity Style

anne hathaway fashion red carpet

Anne Hathaway has had some super glamorous and stunning pieces while promoting her new Amazon original series Modern Love!

Last week, she stunned in a gorgeous cream Oscar de la Renta asymmetrical peplum -type top over a matching skirt while promoting the project in New York City on Thursday.

Earlier in her pregnancy, the Ocean’s 8 star stunned in a hot pink dress with a bump-revealing side cut outs while attending the FIJI Water At Sea Wall / A Life Opening Night On Broadway event on August 08, 2019 in New York City.

And last month, we were crushing the gorgeous Valentino Maxi dress the Devil Wears Prada star wore to the Amazon Prime Video’s Television Critics Association press event in Beverley Hills, California.

The floor-length dress from the design house’s 2019 Resort Collection was decorated with what looked like Venetian artwork on the front and featured yellow pleats and billowy sleeves.

The New York native, who shares a 3-year old son named Jonathan with husband Adam Shulman.

She announced her pregnancy on Instagram with a July mirror selfie.

“It’s not for a movie,” she captioned the black-and-white pic at the time. “#2. ⁣All kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”

She previously opened up to  to Entertainment Tonight  about her infertility struggles that week:

“There is a one-sided narrative to this and, of course, it’s wonderful that we celebrate the happy moment when it’s ready to share. I think there is a silence around the moments before that and they are not all happy and, in fact, a lot of them are quite painful. I think that pain is that these women feel like we’re the only ones going through it.”

She added, “I just knew that somewhere my announcement was going to make somebody feel worse about themselves because — and it wouldn’t be their fault that that happened — you just can’t help it when you want something so bad and it feels like it’s happening to everyone else but you. And I just wanted that person to know that they’re included in my story too and that my story didn’t just have happy moments too.”

2015 Prime Time Emmy Awards Red Carpet and Winners

emmy awards 2015

Watching the red carpet to the 67th Annual Primtime EmmyAwards at Microsoft Theater tonight, I must say I was really loving all the creative and different silhouettes, daring cutouts and experiments with texture on the styles of clothing.

Early photos I saw revealed a lot of prom and pageant-like dresses, and very full skirts and structured boring looks we’ve seen before on the Miss Universe stage, but then when I began to dig deep into the photo galleries and I was wowed by Amy Poehler‘s midriff revealing black Michael Kors Collection dress with spaghetti halter straps. Grrrrr!

And January Jones‘ emerald Ulyana Sergeenko jumpsuit with a starfish brooch at the hip was to die for!

Kerry Washington did not disappoint this time in a silver metallic Marc Jacobs with futuristic cap shoulders, Casadei pumps and Harry Winston jewels. Love Love!

Mad Men‘s Jessica Pare brought out the color in her pink Monse halter dress, accented with Fred Leighton jewels and Christian Louboutin heels.

Many were nominated and several took home awards like Julia Louis-Dreyfus who won again for the 4th straight year in a row as the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in Veep.

And Congratulations to  Viola Davis for her historic win as the first African American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama for her role in How to Get Away With Murder tonight. Bravo! She rocked this stage in a righteous twist-out fro complemented nicely in a white with black print Carmen Marc Valvo gown, Stuart Weitzman shoes, and Neil Lane jewels.

viola davis wins

Congrats also to Regina King who played a protective Muslim mother in the mini-series drama American Crime and for her role on that version of the series nabbed the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series of Movie!

She took her son Ian to the ceremony and acknowledged him in her speech for a win she really didn’t expect, as she explained to ET!

These were big wins given the fact that historically in the US, there are not that many roles written and cast for black women to play so they can outshine their contemporaries at the time and earn wins.

Very Cool.

King looked nice though the color and frame of the dress was underwhelming for her powerful and strong body. The back was banging tho. Owww!

Maggie Gyllenhaal did the ball gown thing in Oscar de la Renta with Fred Leighton jewels. I don’t have enough words for Heidi Klum‘s  dress and I found the fit of Claire DanesPrada dress a bit off for her tonight.

Veep‘s Anna Chlumsky brought some glam in Bibhu Mohapatra and Chopard jewels and Sofia Vergara did the usual old Hollywood glam vixen figure-hugging fishtail look. Seen it before. It’s her signature and works for her I guess but she really should change things up.

Remembering Oscar de la Renta: Biography

The fashion world mourns the loss of veteran fashion designer Oscar de la Renta who passed away at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer.
Every American First Lady from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama has worn his designs and he had won every fashion award around; been honored by many philanthropic organizations and given many honorary degrees; and served on several charitable organizations’ boards.
Working right through the end, de la Renta had an eye for women’s fashion.
It figures, he was born Oscar Aristides Ortiz Renta Fiallo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the only boy in a family of 7 children.
He started his fashion career as a student in Madrid selling his fashion illustrations to earn money.
Oscar de la Renta and Audrey Hepburn
The then-young upstart eventually landed a plum job working for Cristobal Balenciaga in Madrid.
“I just learned by looking and observing. He was like God to me. ” Oscar de la Renta has said of Cristobal Balenciaga.

He then moved on to work as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo, before getting a job designing for Elizabeth Arden in Manhattan, New York in America in 1963.
When Arden was reluctant to work with Oscar’s vision to create more ready-to-wear women’s clothing, he departed in 1965 to work for Jane Darby and eventually took over her label after Darby’s death.
“Everything Oscar does is feminine, romantic and appropriate. He’s not out there trying to be revolutionary, he just wants his clothes to be extremely attractive, and appropriate without being ‘old.’  If you look through his collection, he has a signature:  ‘Beautiful Clothes.'”  Anna Wintour, editor and chief of Vogue, has said of de la Renta.
He has stayed true to his aesthetic by refusing to sell out his line and keeping the company in the family.
His son-in-law Alex Bolen currently operates as Chief Executive Officer, and his step-daughter Eliza Bolen serves as Vice President of Licensing, at Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Up until succumbing to cancer, he maintained control over his brand and because of that ensured the consistent quality and vision of his clothing.
He has dressed many of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms-to-be and alums including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tina Fey, Jessica Alba and currently expecting stars Blake Lively and Rahcel Bilson.
Rest in Peace, Oscar.
Godspeed. Thank you for your talent and art. Your vision will live in on in fashion history.
