4 ways families can save money

Even though the economy is improving slightly, raising a family in this day and age is still financially challenging. Jenna Fernandes, CEO of CareBooker.com, the only free “Open Table” of family and pet care services, offers ideas for parents to save for what matters like adding to a child’s college fund, planning for retirement or making some overdue household repairs.
From planning family meals in advance to shopping smart, here are 4 easy ideas to save money:
1.       Trade a vacation for a staycation: Instead of taking two vacations per year, trading one of them in for a staycation can save thousands. Investigate local towns as well as surrounding communities to see what type of fun things are offered nearby. Roadtrippers is the best go-to guide for nearby attractions such as national parks, old-school diners, art galleries and more all organized on a map with directions. The most important thing isn’t the destination, but that families are bonding and spending time together.
2.       Meal planning is a must: Swinging by the drive through multiple times per week can burn a hole in anyone’s wallet. Instead of spending $25 to $40 eating at a restaurant, plan budget-friendly meals at home. When planning meals ahead of time, families always know what’s for dinner and are less likely to resort to fast food. Plan to Eat is an easy and effective online meal planning service that generates shopping lists based on the meals that people want to eat for the week, helping families spend less time and money grocery shopping.
3.       Smart food shopping matters: For those who hate clipping coupons, there are smartphone apps that make the job much easier. Favado, for example, locates which store has the best discounts based on a grocery list and emails the coupons for printing. It is also easier, if possible, to keep kids at home while grocery shopping— intercepting cookies and other items they try to fling into the cart is not only distracting but can cause more spending than intended.
4.       Home entertainment is fun: Instead of going to the movies, check out a video from the local library and spend the night at home watching movies and popping popcorn with the family. Library rentals are free and for less than $2, popcorn can be enjoyed from the comfort of home. For newer movie options, the Redbox app locates nearby kiosks where families can reserve just-released movies to rent for as little as $1.20 a night.
Good luck, parents!

Election Day: Why you should take your kid to the polls

Today is midterm elections in the United States.
All eligible and registered voters should vote and parents should, if feasible, take their kids along to the ballot box.
Many schools are off today as their buildings are used as polling places so there is nothing stopping you from schlepping them along if you are off too.
It sends a signal to your offsprings the importance of civic participation.
It also let’s them know the power of democracy and of exercising approval or disapproval of the way your city, town, village, state or country is run.

Let them wear your “I Voted” sticker to school the next day. It could spark a conversation with their teacher or other kids about the process. They can share what it was like to go vote.
Let your child be an advocate for being a good civic citizen and ambassador for democracy.
All of it helps them realize the world and their place in it is larger than the personal issues they deal with at home and at school.
It’s all a part of growing good and conscientious children.
Go vote and take your babies!!

Parents donate and sell back excess Halloween candy for the Troops

Each year, Americans spend an estimated $2.5 billion dollars on Halloween treats and every year, some parents who do not allow their kids to eat too much candy end up saving their stash for months.

An alternative to storing the candy until it comes too stale then throwing it all away is to donate some of it to the Halloween Candy Buy back program.  The program was founded by dentist Chris Kammer in Wisconsin. Kammer’s office.

He used to offer $1 a pound to buy back candy collected by the young trick-or-treaters in his practice. Kammer would then donate the candy to the troops overseas who rarely get a chance to get their hands on sweet treats from back home.

The effort has expanded and this year, over 2,500 dentists and orthodontists have signed up to participate.

To find a local place to sell back your candy, simply plug in your zip code and find the local participating dentist nearby.

The collected candy get added to  Operation Gratitude care packages.

Good stuff! Sad kids but sad less hyperactive kids with less cavities!

Find a local participating dentist or orthodontist office HERE!

Study: Babies respond more to moms than dads, but you can fix that dads

New research indicates that babies learn language more from their moms than their dads, and that moms react and respond more to a baby’s cues than dads.
A report in the journal Pediatrics analyzed a group of 33 babies monitored with a small recording device called LENA attached to a vest researchers wore on them just after they were born, while in the hospital and again at 44 weeks and 7-months old.  With over 3,000 hours of recordings, the researchers found that “when babies made sounds, moms were more likely to respond to them verbally than fathers were — “Oooo, sweetie pie, you’re talking this morning, ” Time  summarized.
The report also discovered that mothers responded 88% to 94% of the time to the babies vocalizations, while dads responded only 27% to 33% of the time.

As a result, and  perhaps because the babies were used to hearing their mom talk to them more, both boys and girls were also more likely to respond to their mothers’ or female voices than they were to male voices.

Dang dads, even strange random women beat your voice!
But you dads can change all that, the study suggest, by simply talking to your babies more and perhaps doing so in a higher pitched sing song-y way that moms do and pairing your talking with eye contacts as moms tend to do.
Give it a try and report back, kay?

Good luck!

Celeb wellness expert’s 3 Last-minute Healthy #Halloween Tricks

Halloween is tomorrow and if your child is one of the 6 million affected with a food allergy or other restriction, the festivities could end up on a sour note.
To make Halloween a safe and fun experience for everyone, safe and healthy from wellness expert Shanna Israel offers 3 go-to tips families:
Trick #1: Outfit your Kids & Paint your Pumpkins
The best way to keep your kids safe is to take precautions, making sure that others know your child, or your house, is a gluten or peanut-free environment.

  • Take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project and paint a teal pumpkin for your stoop. This is becoming 2014’s universal sign that your house is “safe” for those with a dietary restriction.
  • Outfit your child in a medical ID bracelet to highlight their medical conditions upfront. Companies like Hope Paige design some really cute ones for kids

Trick #2: Update your candy bowl
The candy bowl can be a nightmare for parents with kids suffering from an allergy. Some simple tricks to help those with allergies stay safe are:

  • Create two candy bowls, clearly marked which candy has specific ingredients, such as peanuts or tree nuts, and which is safe for kids. Make sure you ask about allergies before you let them dig in
  • Just because it’s Halloween doesn’t mean you need to provide unhealthy treats! Sticking to dark chocolate is a simple swap, or try to incorporate healthier treats like KIND bars or small packages of trail mix. Still tasty treats kids will like and parents will thank you!

Trick #3: Health-ify your Halloween dishes
Halloween parties or get-togethers are quite common this weekend, so come prepared with a tasty treat that’s both healthy & delicious! Some tips for those with dietary restrictions to successfully navigate the Halloween parties:
Celeb wellness expert Shanna Israel

  • Bring your own dish: Not only will it ensure you have something to eat, but it’s a great way to provide the host with a gift and demonstrate to party goers that healthy can be delicious, too!
  • Expand your recipe book: Especially around Halloween, you can experiment with fun, spooky dishes that incorporate veggies, superfoods like pumpkin and candies without the sugar, calories or other artificial sweeteners.

Stay-at-home moms, you are supposed to be paid this annually

Saw this infographic from Salary.com which itemizes the would-be pay for stay at home moms over a 5 year period from 2008 to 2012.
It estimates that in 2012, a SAHM would earn $112,916 if she were paid in cash for her labor
That does not include overtime hours.
This is great to keep around for the next time someone tries to devalue all the work SAHMs do in the home!
Ha! What do you think? Agree? Think it’s too low or high?

New Study links C-Section births to Autism

Babies born through Caesarean section are more likely to develop autism, a new study says.
Academics warn the increasingly popular C-section deliveries heighten the risk of the disorder by 23 per cent.
However, they urge caution on the findings and have stressed more research is needed.
Professor Louise Kenny, one of the authors and a practising obstetrician, said the link between C-sections and children developing Autism Spectrum Disorder also remains unclear.
“Parents should be reassured that the overall risk of a child developing ASD is very small and that Caesarean section is largely a very safe procedure and when medically indicated, it can be lifesaving,” she said.
The study was carried out by University College Cork and was been published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry on Monday.
It reviewed existing findings from studies on C-section and ASD in a number of countries including Australia, the United States, Canada and Sweden.
They also looked for any links between the surgical delivery of a baby and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.
But there were only two studies to review and their findings were unclear.

COURT: Facebook notice to dad insufficient before giving up baby for adoption

So we are seeing more and more social media case law in recent years. Last week, the Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that a woman who got pregnant and gave up her child for adoption did not satisfy the requirement to give the biological dad notice by sending him a Facebook message.
Nine out of 12 judges on that court said:

Nothing in the record of this cause indicates that more direct contact with Father was impossible so that Mother was required to rely upon an indirect method such as Facebook to notify him of her pregnancy. Indeed, the record indicates she came to Father’s workplace to see him roughly six weeks after their last sexual encounter.

There is no indication in the record she knew she was pregnant at the time, and it is quite possible that she did not know, however it does demonstrate she knew where to find Father to talk to him in person and had no qualms about doing so. The record does not indicate she made any effort to visit Father again after this date, while he was still employed, to tell him of the pregnancy.

The record also does not indicate Mother made any other reasonable effort to contact Father directly and notify him.

In other words, if she wanted to let him know she was preggers, she had better chances than via an indirect message on Facebook.
The three dissenting judges – who didn’t have enough votes to change the outcome of the case- disagreed.
They questioned why a man would have unprotected sex and assume there would be no pregnancy at some point or suspect something was up.  They relied on Oklahoma law when writing:

The duty of the male who has sexual relations with a female is (1) to be aware that a pregnancy might occur and (2) to inform himself. He cannot complacently wait for the female to find him in the event of a pregnancy. In this case the Mother tried to inform the father. There was no evidence that he attempted to learn anything. After the legislature had made its intent known, the majority opinion still maintains that the responsibility of informing a father lies fully with the female.

The Father’s testimony reveals that during the times they were having intercourse, the Mother was seventeen years old and he was twenty to twenty-one years old. He testified that he knew where she lived, knew her full name and had her telephone number. When asked, ‘What steps did you take to determine that she wasn’t pregnant after you had intercourse the last time?’ His answer was ‘None.’ He was also asked, ‘[D]id you ever attempt to contact her and she denied contact with you?’ He answered, ‘No.’

They also were willing to consider a Facebook notice adequate by citing a past case where a court determined a fax notice was sufficient.

Interesting, no? What do you think?
