“I never thought my heart could feel so full. We’re so in love with our little angels. Born at 7:44 am and 7:45 am 4/23/18,” the 41-year old Australian captioned an Instagram photo of Herjavec holding both babies in each arm.

Meet the 12-Year Old Entrepreneur with Multi-Million Dollar Deals with WholeFoods, Wegmans & NFL Players

One Texan Pre-Teen has turned a lemonade stand into a profitable business with multi-million dollar chain grocery storedeals and powerful investors, including 10 NFL Players.

Mikaila Ulmber’s stint pitching her home-made nationally distributed lemonade to the sharks on ABC‘s Shark Tank back in 2015 got her lots of attention. While she was on the show, shark Daymond John  offered to invest $60,000 in the company in exchange for a 25% stake in it. Ulmer accepted his offer.

After the exposure, sales grew by 231%, she told CNBC.

The 7th grader has since met and introduced on stage then President Obama at a big event, was invited to the White House twice and more recently, she caught the eye of 10 National Football League (NFL) players who chose to invest in the succesful entrepreneur.

According to NBC Sports, Arian Foster, Glover Quin, Duane Brown, Jonathan Grimes, Omar Bolden, Bobby Wagner, Darius Slay, Sherrick McManis, EJ Manuel and Malik Jackson recently agreed to invest $810,000 collectively in capital to Ulmer’s Austin-Texas based family business.

Hey everybody!! Soo excited that I was on shark tank. Thank you! What a show???

“We look for companies that match our main focus of developing a good product, but are also good people and do it for the right reasons,” former Houston Texan running back Arian Foster told the Houston Chronicle about the importance of backing businesses like Mikaila’s. “It’s more than about money to us. We believe that investing in small black businesses is extremely important.”

Ulmber’s personality sells the business and she has been in charge for the 9 years of being in business.

The middle school counts on her mom to assist with marketing and her dad to manage the finance operations.

Ulmer’s business responsibilities include doing trade show demos, media interviews, business presentations, workshops about bees and about entrepreneurship, depositing her money in the bank, putting in money orders, depositing checks, checking the business email and posting on social media.

Meanwhile, she maintains all As and goes to school full time.

Amazing, right? Her most investors think so.

“She’s very special. Obviously, she has a bright future,” Detroit Lions safety Quin said. “Hopefully, I can be a part of it and nourish it and watch her grow. The sky is the limit.”

How did a 12 year old become a 9 year old CEO vet in the first place?

It all started when Ulmer got stung by two bees in one week when she was just 4-years old. Her parents encouraged her to learn more about bees to lessen her fear of them and to do some research about them. It coincided with the receipt of a family recipe book her grand mom sent her which contained her great-grandmother Helen’s 1940s flaxseed lemonade recipe.

While looking for ideas of what to organize for a community showcase and competition to encourage entrepreneurship in children, Ulmer, with the help of her parents, of course, decided to set up a lemonade stand. Her great-grandmom’s recipe came in handy.

It eventually became her signature product, a popular drink called “Me & The Bees.”

Ulmer eventually tweaked the recipe to use locally sourced honey as a sweetener. Sales went through the roof.

Today, Ulmer is the CEO of the company, BeeSweet Lemonade. The company’s motto is “Buy a bottle, save the bees!”

Lemonade sales were good, so Ulmer continued to sell her drinks at youth entrepreneurial events until one year, the owner of East Side Pies, an Austin-based pizza company suggested she bottle it. Ulmer agreed and moved the lemonade production from her family’s kitchen to a small commercial kitchen.

Now BeeSweet Lemonade is sold in 12-ounce bottles of freshly squeezed lemonade with flavors such as original mint, ginger, prickly pear and iced tea. They can be found in Whole Foods Market and several stores and currently are in 20 states.

In 2016, BeeSweet sold more than 300,000 bottles of lemonade. She scored an $11M deal with 55 Whole Foods stores that year too, per the Daily Mail and she also recently closed to get her products into Wegman’s grocery chain.

“I want a BeeSweet Lemonade line, like the Hello Kitty line,” Mikaila said a few years back. “I want BeeSweet everything.” She’s getting close to her wishes.

Since launching in 2015, Ulmer has spoken at Google, and appeared in numerous outlets including CNBC, Essence, Microsoft and has appeared on The Real and other TV and radio shows.

While not being an all A student, Ulmer has speaking engagements that take her world-wide.  Her family travel with her and turn the gigs into mini -vacations, one report on Microsoft’s blog noted given they all make biz work and have little downtime.

Ulmer wants to become a serial entrepreneur and become a coder.

Wow! This little girl is inspirational and is certainly going places. So many lessons to be learned by her success!

Does Laila Ali Really Put Being A Mom Fourth on Her List?

img_5042

I saw Refinery29’s feature on Laila Ali and was captivated by the headline which read, “Why World-Famous Boxer Laila Ali Puts Being A Mom 4th On Her List.”

Interesting because a lot of women put motherhood in front of everything else in their lives, including ahead of themselves and their own dreams and aspirations.

So, to read a headline that insinuates a famous actress and boxer prioritizes motherhood so far down on her list, is eye catching (and click worthy).

Indeed, the feature focuses on Ali’s work on encouraging and empowering other women and mothers to not sacrifice ther hopes after they become moms.

“The 39-year-old mother of two is in New York with T.J. Maxx (a Refinery29 sponsor) promoting her role in the brand’s Maxx You initiative, which is aimed at helping women shrug off the stereotypes that hold us back,” writer Laura Norkin notes.

Though, ironically shortly after, Norkin pens that nothing about Ali “flashing a French manicure, palest pink pedicure, and a bright-red bodycon dress that can barely contain the face-bashing biceps for which she is most known” says “mom.”

img_5043

Well I know plenty of moms that fit this description, individually and collectively, but she’s right, society doesn’t equate sensuality, femininity and physical  strength with motherhood. It should.

And for the record, Ali didn’t say she put motherhood fourth in order of her priorities, rather when asked the ways she self-identifies, Ali simply named “mom” fourth.

“I’m a professional boxer, athlete, entrepreneur, mom; now cooking enthusiast coming out with a cookbook.”

Later she adds that she also has a podcast, Norkin writes.

Really, the headline was literally accurate in that she did list it fourth but to me, naming it fourth doesn’t make it fourth in order of Ali’s focus. So realistically, it is misleading.

But I get it.

The point of the Maxx You Initiaive is to encourage women to shield whatever obstacles hold them back.

“Despite the stereotype of motherhood as an all-consuming identity, I know many people who’ve achieved new levels of career success after having children. I’m wondering if you relate to that experience at all,”  Ali says.

“I think in general people assume that when you have children, that’s all you are — a mom, and that’s actually not true. You can be a mother and still pursue your dreams.”

Ali will be hosting the Maxx You workshop later this summer alongside Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran; 80 selected online applicants will receive a cash prize and personal mentorship from the two.

Start Up Founder hid Pregnancy to Not Scare away Investors

TaliaGoldsteinBanner

Our culture seems obsessed with pregnancy given all the fascination over celebrity “bump watch”, celebrity post-baby bodies and all the nonstop studies and articles about pregnancy each week. Still, it’s still taboo to be pregnant in the workplace or while launching a company.

Yahoo Parenting posted a piece recently about women who run their own businesses who hid their pregnancies while looking for funding or opportunities.

It featured Talia Goldstein who is the CEO for a matchmaking startup called Three Day Rule that recently entered a lucrative partnership with Match.com. But before realizing tremendous success, Goldstein explained in an essay in Fortune  that while looking for investors, she was “ashamed for getting pregnant” because her industry “looks down on it.”

Goldstein, who had appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank heard comment after comment to give her that impression. One person told her “a pregnant CEO/founder is going to fail her company.” and another remarked “it’s a huge red flag when the founder of a company is pregnant.” Someone else retorted: “Honestly, I’d never invest in a company with a pregnant CEO.”

When Goldstein, who once worked as a producer at E! Entertainment, got pregnant she made a conscious decision to not alienate investors by hiding her pregnancy from friends, colleagues and even her business partner.

“I must have looked ridiculous,” she wrote about going as far as wearing a bulky trench coat in 80 degree weather. “But I knew that I had a better chance of raising money looking ridiculous than I would looking pregnant.”

Now that the mom to son Max is pregnant again, she plans to make it easier for her mainly-female employees so they can feel comfortable to start a family when they’re ready without fear of retribution for doing so.

Yahoo cited a Cornell University study which concluded that mothers are viewed as less competent and committed than fathers, even though the evidence supports that moms outperform their childless counterparts.

Despite the fact that the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EOEC) has updated its guidelines in 2014 to state that employers cannot fire, refuse to hire, or demote a woman sole on the fact she is pregnant, many employers don’t follow the suggestions and women too do not know their rights.

“I hid my pregnancy at work until my third trimester — thankfully, my bump wasn’t that big,” one anonymous New York City-based copywriter told Yahoo Parenting. “I was a contractor, and I worried that pregnancy would cloud all my other attributes, despite working at a female-dominated company that made products for women.”adding, “Once, in the bathroom, my co-worker heard me throwing up from morning sickness, and I pretended I’d had a late night. I figured it was better to be hung-over at work than pregnant.”

A Los Angeles-based psychologist  chimed in about why she waited until her third trimester to announce her pregnancy: “I had just been hired into a tenured university position, and I was worried people would question my competency to take on new responsibilities.”

It’s an unfortunate reality for many women and it doesn’t seem like it will get better.
