Kerry Washington Talks Motherhood and Producing Movies Featuring Moms

Kerry Washington Opens Up about Balancing Breastfeeding and Hollywood and Producing TV Projects about Multicultural Families and Mothers in Order to Diversify the Stories Usually put out in Tinsel Town

Kerry Washington is mom to 7-month old son Caleb and 3-year old daughter Isabelle who she manages to keep out of the public eye. Once in a while she discusses them and life with them during an interview.

That was the case recently in an interview for Net-A-Porter‘s fashion magazine The Edit.  In the mag which features Washington in its new “Power Women” issue, the Scandal star talked balancing motherhood with being a working actress.

“I can be covered in spit-up on a conference call while I’m pumping and that’s OK, because this is my perfect,” Washington told The Edit in comments posted online Thursday, “It may not be somebody else’s, but this is mine.”

Washington, who is married to ex-NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha, said her boss, Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes is among her mom role models.

“Shonda’s got I-don’t-know-how-many shows now, plus three kids, and she just figures it out,” Washington said. “However busy I feel, Shonda feels busier, so I’m just going to rise to the occasion. She’s been a real role model. Seeing the community she’s created and the work ethic—I feel like there should be more of this in the world.”

With buzz of Scandal finishing off its last and final season, Washington has been busy with her Simpson Street Production company, named for the Bronx street where her mom grew up.

Her company wrapped “Confirmation”, the Anita Hill story on which Washington starred and played the embattled attorney who almost took down Clarence Thomas during his US Supreme Court confirmation hearing over allegations he sexually harassed her.

And now they have three projects in the can: a TV show about a multicultural family and two movies for the big screen about mothers. Nice!

“We’re looking to do diverse work that brings more and more people to the table—anyone whose voice is underrepresented,” the actress told The Edit. “We’re trying to carve out a space for them at the table of empowered storytelling.”

Love it!

Given the #WHCD was Light on Celebs This Year, Let’s Look Back At Celebs Who Walked Its Red Carpet Pregnant

pregnant-on-white-house

The annual White House Correspondents Association dinner has increasingly been a haven for Hollywood Celebrities who walk the red carpet on their way to hob nob with journalism’s elite that cover the White House.

This year was much different.

The current sitting president Donald J. Trump choose to sit it out, a first time since Ronald Reagan  that a President opted to skip the event which usually features a comedian roasting the prez and the media and the pres himself giving a monologue full of self-deprecating humor.

[Even when Reagan skipped it, that was because he was shot on the way in, though to be fair other presidents who were very unpopular at the time Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon have skipped the elite dinner in the past, the only other two since Calvin Coolidge]

This year, the event was also super light on the usual parade of celebrities. That might be a good thing in the eyes of many who have heavily criticized the dinner for becoming to glamourized and Hollywoodized.  Celebrated national TV broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw famously skips it and has been vocal as to his reasons why.

Nonetheless, we usually can spot several celebrity moms we’ve covered in the past to feature on the blog. In the very recent past 8 years, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kristen Bell, Jessica Simpson, Cynthian Nixon, Adriana Lima, Neve Campbell, Emma Watson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, Anna Chlumsky, Julianna Margulies, Katie Couric, Sofia Vergara, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Candace Cameron Bure, model Emily Ratajowski, Vivica A. Fox, Lupita Nyong’o, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, Kendell Jenner, Laverne Cox, Lucy Liu, Gabrielle Union have all attended as guests of various news organizations that purchase tables.

Not this year. We didn’t see any. There were a few celebs and some of DC’s A-listers [read: TV journalists and broadcast reporters] there but that’s about it.  And with Trump declaring war on the media, the White House press corp and DC establishment, none in his administration or celebs friendly to him failed to show up as well.

So…we’re doing the next best thing and flashbacking to all the ones who did show up in years past. Interesting enough, most of them were preggers at the time!

Last year, in 2016, while pregnant with her second child, daughter, Isabella, Kerry Washington attempted to conceal her bump in an A-line one shoulder black mini Victoria Beckham mini dress.

In 2015, Glee alum Naya Rivera looked radiant in a white floor length  Tadashi Shoji evening gown and model Anne V ‘s lovely floral gown rocked that year as well.

In 2014, TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie was six-months pregnant with her first child when she showed up in a pink dress to the event.

Going further back, Anna Paquin was expecting her first children, a pair of twins, with husband Stephen Moyer in 2011 when she attended the event, also affectionately known as the “Nerd Prom”, wearing a chic and elegant silk jersey gown by French designer Herve L. Leroux.

That same year, Reese Witherspoon was also expecting her third child, but first with second husband Jim Toth. She also went with black in a Monique Lhuillier  gown showing her barely there bump at the time.

There you have it! The White House Correspondents Association dinner  has been noteworthy for Bumpwatch coverage history.

Jessica Biel Hosted a $30K per Ticket Fundraiser for Hillary Clinton

When our Bellytich Bumpwatch alum, actress and restaurateur Jessica Biel isn’t throwing a big bash for kids and parents, she and her husband Justin Timberlake are hosting $30,000 a ticket Hillary Clinton fundraiser luncheons in their Hollywood Hills  home, attended by the likes of Shonda Rhimes, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Aniston and Tobey McGuire.

We know about the late August event  because guests of these types of events can’t help but share pics from the insights. There was one of Timberlake and Biel speaking to guests and another of Aniston posing for a selfie with Clinton and Maguire’s wife, Jennifer Meyer.

Clinton was in California for a series of starry fundraisers in Los Angeles, Laguna Beach and Silicon Valley.

She started the trip off taping a segment with Jimmy Kimmel Live then headed over to a fundraiser for 500 at the Beverly Hills home of ex-NBA icon Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie. The Democratic Presidential candidate then  headed over to Palo Alto for two events: one hosted by Apple CEO Tim Cook, according to the Mercury News in San Jose.

Elbow rubbing with the stars while raising money from those who have the most money to donate, must be nice.

Bump Watch: Kerry Washington has Been Sticking with a Mainly Black Style Pallete

kerry washington

Since announcing her pregnancy at the 2016 Met Gala, Scandal star Kerry Washington has been laying low, but not as out of the spotlight as with her first pregnancy. She has made a few public appearances and in most of them, she looks to have selected to stick with a mainly black color pallete.

For example, at producer Jennifer Klein‘s 19th annual Day of Indulgence party held in the LA home of the Pearl Harbor associate producer,  Washington donned a black HATCH Chloe jumpsuit to the Los Angeles, California event held on August 14, 2016. According to the YBF, or other bump watch alums, Kristen Bell was at the even as well. So were alums Jennifer Lopez and Anna Farris, InStyle magazine reports.

Washington and her husband, former NFL player Jimmy Kimmel LiveNnamdi Asomugha are expecting their second child. She decided to not film her hit ABC show while pregnant and succumb to all of the crazy ways show producers attempted to hide her bump. The show will return for its 6th season in the middle of the fall season, and on election night to be precise.

“We are basically going to start out the season on election night,” how creator Shonda Rhimes has said. “Yes, it is going to play into our season, but we’re not going to spend our time playing an election.”

KERRY SAG

She had to also get out of the house this past June 13 to collect her Actors Inspiration Award given at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation 7th annual L.A. Golf Classic Fundraiser in Burbank, California. She went with a floral light and airy Giambattista Valli bohemian dress with black and white heels from Sarah Jessica Parker‘s collection.

The next day, she broke up the black with white and was there for her friend President Barack Obama and his wife First Lady Michelle Obama when she spoke at the White House Summit on the United State Of Women June 14, 2016 in Washington, DC.  it was the White House’s first ever summit to push for gender equality.

KERRY JIMMY

Out of all her looks, I love the black ribbed flare dress she wore during a taping of  Jimmy Kimmel Live‘ on May 12, 2016. And I also adored the Brandon Maxwell cape dress she wore paired with Gianvito Rossi pumps in April at an event (see first image in above collage.)

Grey’s Anatomy: The TV Cast With Most Adopted Kids

grey's cast

Of all the shows on television, we think the cast of Grey’s Anatomy has some of the most aware and generous parents who have opened up their hearts and homes to many children without parents or proper homes.  Several members of  Grey’s family are also wonderful about raising children of different background and parentage.

While we cannot say definitely if its cast and alums have adopted the most children, but we do know they’re up there in numbers.

For example, currently, we anxiously await the birth of Grey’s alum Katherine Heigl‘s first child. Meanwhile, she and her husband are parenting two beautiful adopted girls, Naleigh from South Korea (adopted in 2009) and Adalaide Marie Hope (adopted in 2012), a mixed-race child from a woman in Louisiana.

Heigl has an adopted sister, Meg, who was born in Korea.

“Josh and I started talking about [adoption] before we were even engaged,”  US Weekly quotes the Knocked Up  star telling Scholastic Parent & Child back in February. “[M]y parents adopted [Meg] three years before I was born. I wanted my own family to resemble the one I came from, so I always knew I wanted to adopt from Korea.”
True to form, Heigl’s soon-to-be-born son will have a similar experience of having older adopted siblings.
Not an adoptive parent, but her former Grey’s co-star Ellen Pompeo is also doing a wonderful job of raising her children of different race.

Pompeo is quoted recently stating that she surrounds her bi-racial daughters with images of empowered African American women.

Pompeo and her husband Chris Ivery are parents to daughters Stella, born September 2009, and Sienna May, born October 2014 via surrogate.

“My daughters are black so it’s very important to me that they see a lot of images of beautiful, powerful, strong black women,” Ellen shares. “Every time there is a black woman on a magazine cover, whether it is Kerry Washington or whoever it is, I make sure that magazine is in my house and on my table. For me, that’s super important.”

It’s also important for the girls to see the Obamas n the spotlight, she relayed.

“I feel really fortunate that they are growing up in a time [in which] the first president my daughter knows is Barack Obama,” Ellen said. “That’s an incredible gift.”

Um doesn’t Chris look a little low key like President Barack Obama tho?

Show producer and writer Shonda Rhimes also has adopted several children. She is solo-parenting and raising two adopted daughters on her own, Harper, Emerson and Beckett (whom she welcomed via a gestational surrogate) ages 13, 3 and 2, respectively.

Bravo!

Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes adopts third child

Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes adopted her third child recently. Rhimes announced this news on Twitter last week:

The Private Practice creator told shared a life-long interest in adoption in an essay contribution to the book Carried in Our Hearts: The Gift of Adoption; Inspiring Stories of Families Created Across Continents, released this year, that since she was 9-years old, she had been telling people that she would adopt.
“As I got older, the idea matured too,” she wrote in the book. “It took shape and form and became real. Adoption was how I was going to become a mother. Adoption would build my family.”
The baby joins big sisters Harper, adopted in 2001, and Emerson, in 2012.
This week, the White House announced that President Barack Obama has appointed Rhimes to the prestigious Board of Trustees to the Kennedy Center.
