Serena Williams’ Shocking French Open Loss Follows with Controversy

Serena Williams delighted fans around the world with an uplifting message in the wake of her surprise defeat at the French Open this week.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner is an inspiration to moms everywhere as she continues to excel after giving birth to Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. in September 2017.

She is now 37 years old and most players would have retired by now, but Williams continues to compete at the highest level. She slumped to a shock loss to world number 37 Sofia Kenin this week, but she was praised for her response.

“Yesterday was not my day,” she wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “But it’s about getting up time and time again after you fall. Here’s to a multitude of tomorrows.”

Eva Longoria and Ciara were among the celebrities to salute her message.

Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism after giving birth, leaving her bedridden for six weeks and delaying her return to training, but she has continued to excel and she finished runner-up at the US Open last year.

That followed victory at the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant, showing just what a magnificent competitor she is.

Leading betting sites like sportsbetting.ag rank her among the frontrunners to win Wimbledon and the US Open later this year, and it would be a brave tennis fan to bet against her.

She is widely regarded as the greatest player of all, having secured the most Grand Slam titles in the Open Era, and she is just one behind Margaret Court, who has 24 Grand Slams, on the all-time list. If she can win one more Slam she will move level with Court and that would be an amazing story for an athlete that serves as a tireless champion for all mothers.

Yet Williams has also faced a great deal of criticism this week after Australian clay court specialist Dominic Thiem was ousted from his press conference in order to make way for her.

She wanted to get her post-match press duties over and done with as quickly as possible after her defeat to Kenin, but she was told that Thiem was using the room.

After further talks, officials decided to kick him out to accommodate Williams, prompting a furious reaction as he accused her of having “a bad personality”.

“I don’t really get it, seriously,” he said. “I mean, what the hell? No, but it’s a joke, really. I have to leave the room because she’s coming? It doesn’t matter if it is me who sits in there, even if a junior is in there. I am 100% sure Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal would never do something like that.”

Eurosport pundit Annabel Croft slammed her behaviour and demanded she apologize to Thiem.

“It is a question of who is in charge here. It is unbelievably disrespectful to a man that is still in the draw,” said Croft. “She should be made to wait an extra five minutes until finished. Had it been a role reversal there would have been absolute uproar. It’s just appalling.”

There has been no response as of yet from Williams, but it could be a misunderstanding.

Some say she asked for Room 2 and not for Thiem to be moved, and the organizers just decided to evict the Austrian from the main room. Staff at the French Open have questions to answer.

Williams also had every right to be keen to get media duties out the way as quickly as possible.

She had lost and she would have been desperate to get back to her daughter as soon as possible, so everyone should give her the benefit of the doubt and let her get on with dazzling on court and being a great mom.

Powerball: What The Mom Jackpot Should Include

This week in the US, a Powerball lottery winner took home the grand prize!

That’s nice and all but it got me thinking for moms (and many dads) who do everything for everyone and rarely look out for ourselves, what would a lottery win look like.

In lieu of a lottery win of cash, this is what I think would be the equivalent to a jackpot to a typical mom.

Let’s call it the “Mom who Lunches” Jackpot and this is what I envision should be included.

We don’t require much but for our sanity, the mom Powerball should include

A year’s worth of laundry pickup, wash and fold service.

Weekly housekeeping and housecleaning services that include putting away the folded laundry, and deep cleaning the bathroom(s) and kitchen!

Monthly clutter removal service.

Bi weekly spa days including manicure, pedicure, facial and massage.

Bi weekly computer IT service to remove all the memory-clogging games, memes, photos and other garbage the kids burden and load up on the family computer.

Weekly 5-hour sitter service for Date Or girls night out (or fellas night out for dads)

Monthly momcaytion solo-cation weekend at a local hotel or resort.

Weekly Grocery delivery service.

Weeekly catered prepped dinner Blue Apron service for the family.

Daily Personal training services

In other words, the same things the wealthy moms have.

TSA Now Allows Parents to Bring CBD Products for Kids in Their Carry On

The TSA quietly updated its website to allow parents to carry on CBD containing products for their children with epilepsy and other conditions that rely on CBD for treatment.

The United States Transportation Security Administration quietly updated its rules to permit parents of children with epilepsy to bring Food And Drug Administration-approved medical marijuana products as well as certain types of CBD-containing medication and products on carry on planes.

NBC News reported that the agency changed the rules last weekend and updated the language on its website.

CBD products that contain any THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana that gets you high, will not be permitted, nor will recreational marijuana products that contain THC.

NBC News pointed out that it’s not clear how the TSA plans to test products for the presence of THC; the agency says it would refer those cases to law enforcement.

The TSA updated the “What Can I Bring” section of its online regulations to reflect news of an FDA-approved epilepsy medication containing CBD oil.

“TSA was made aware of an FDA-approved drug that contains CBD oil for children who experience seizures from pediatric epilepsy,” the organization confirmed in a statement to Fox News. “To avoid confusion as to whether families can travel with this drug, TSA immediately updated TSA.gov once we became aware of the issue.”

The CBD products must be hemp-derived, and must meet the criteria described by the 2018 Farm Bill

It hasn’t been easy for parents.

Last year, British airport officials seized CBD oil from a 12-year old who has epilepsy though the boy’s mom is still fighting officials over there for the decision.

A consumer reports study found that more than a quarter of people in the U.S. say they’ve tried CBD—a compound in marijuana and hemp that doesn’t get you “high” for a slew of mental and physical reasons. One out of 7 of those people said they use it every day.

CBD oils, or cannabinoid oils which are usually derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, are often sold as relaxation or pain-relief supplements

In June 2019, the FDA approved “Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome,” the FDA wrote in a  press announcement.

The legality of CBD oils containing trace amounts of THC currently varies from state to state.

The TSA will be briefing its officers on the new policy regarding the FDA-approved drug.

The “medical marijuana” section of the guidelines now says “products/medications that contain hemp-derived CBD or are approved by the FDA are legal as long as it is produced within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018.”

Medications fitting that description can be packed in both checked and carry-on luggage — albeit with special instructions.

“Possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil products, remain illegal under federal law,” the TSA added in its emailed statement to Fox News.

“TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law, including possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products.”

The Adult Duggars Continue To Expand Their Families

Since the long running TLC TV show 19 and Counting about a family with 19 and an ever growing number of children ended, the adult kids have picked up from where the matriarch, Michelle Duggar, left off and are having kids themselves.

The show Counting On is the latest installment in the Duggar franchise, and focuses on the family’s older children as they celebrate some of life’s milestone moments, including big moves, the realities of growing up, and raising their own families.

In a recent photo, Anna Duggar shared a family photo of 5 of the then-currently pregnant Duggar women.

“#Throwback to Easter Sunday when the five pregnant Duggar sisters got our first group picture together!” the former reality star, 30, captioned the Thursday, May 30, Instagram post. “#littelduggars.”

The joint photo included Anna Duggar in the denim dress with Lauren Duggar(née Swanson), Kendra Duggar (née Caldwell), Jessa Seewald(née Duggar) and Joy-Anna Forsyth (née Duggar).

As of Sunday, May 26, Jessa had her baby.

Us Weekly  shared that on Tuesday, May 28, she and her husband, Ben Seewaldwelcomed their daughter, Ivy Jane, weighing 7 pounds and 14 ounces. She measured 20.5 inches long.

The Duggars continue to multiply and bring new life into the world. Congrats to all!

Truth About Postpartum Depression in Men

Guest Post

Did you know that approximately 1 in 10 men experience paternal postpartum depression (PPD) after the birth of their children?

On average, new dads more or less expect a lot of sleepless nights, diaper duty, and other typical joys of being a new parent. However, paternal postpartum depression, is certainly something that new fathers don’t expect or are prepared for the arrival of their newborn. The wave of paternal postpartum depression can hit at any time, so it is essential for new dads to keep a wary eye out for its common symptoms.

The Symptoms of Paternal Postpartum Depression

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), parental postpartum depression can affect anywhere from 4 to 25 percent of new fathers. Unfortunately, PPD can go undetected and untreated, as most men aren’t familiar with the signs and symptoms associated with this debilitating form of depression.

Here are a few signs of PPD in men to look out for:

●                   Inability to sleep

●                   Sleeping too much

●                   Severe fluctuations in weight

●                   Frequent episodes of unexplained anger

●                   Feelings of hopelessness

●                   Inability to concentrate

●                   Fatigue

●                   Thoughts of death and suicide

During these bouts of depression, men are more likely to become aggressive, irritable, and even hostile toward their family, and can even display little desire to engage with their newborn child.

While first-time dads have the greatest risk for developing PPD, they are even more susceptible if their partner is also experiencing postpartum depression. In fact, another study published by the NIH shows that the likelihood of postpartum depression in dads whose partner is also suffering from PPD increases by 2.5 times.

Causes of Paternal Postpartum Depression

While the research on postpartum depression in men is still ongoing, doctors see a significant dip in male testosterone levels and an increase in estrogen, prolactin and cortisol levels around the time of their child’s birth. Furthermore, there’s typically a spike in PPD in men around the 3-6-month mark, as this is generally the time when working moms return to the workforce. As dads become more involved with raising their children, the rise in PPD becomes more pronounced.

Solutions

The best way to tackle postpartum depression in both men and women is by seeking the help of a professional. Men are notorious for their reluctance to acknowledge their mental pain, which can often lead to greater negative consequences in the long run.

However, simple talk therapy can truly work wonders when utilized with consistency. A licensed therapist can help new fathers work through their negative thoughts and find productive ways to manage their anger. And if they are not comfortable or don’t have the time to visit a therapist in person, there are plenty of tele-therapy options available that can help fathers in need to speak with a licensed therapist online and in the comfort of their home.

One such option is LARKR, a company that I and my wife Christianne Kernes co-founded. LARKR is a convenient mobile platform that provides professional, affordable, and private talk therapy via video chat. With time, talk therapy can help new fathers and new mothers heal, so they can be the best possible parents to their newborn children.

Manage Summer Activities With This Fool-proof Plan

Summer sand and sunglasses

Summer is known as that lazy, relaxing time of year. While all kids deserve a break, they still need structure and stimulating activities that nurture their growth and development. What are some pro tips to keep in mind when it comes to your kids this summer?

Vinay Saranga M.D. is a child psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry offers this advice:

–        Create A Summer Schedule: You don’t have to schedule something for every second of the day. The idea is to develop apredictable but flexible daily schedule that can help children thrive. Remember, sometimes boredom can bea trigger for bad behavior. The idea is to still have a routine and agenda, but know that it’s okay to be a little laid back when it comes to sticking to it.

–        Create A Calendar: Make it visible to your entire family. Write down daily activities and include a chore/activity chart. This helps children understand what’s expected of them. It also helps enrich their sense of responsibility and integrity all while building their confidence.

–        Don’t Skip Reading: Reading should be part of their everyday routine this summer. Whether in the morning or before bed (or both), make it a priority to read with your kids. Of course, the goal of reading is to make it enjoyed. Get your child involved by going to a local library and scouting out the latest book by their favorite author.

–        Sleep Is Still Essential: Sleep, especially at a young age, is essential for healthy growth and brain development. We all benefit from a good night’s rest! Even if you extend bedtime during the summer, make sure your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. Try not to get too far off of their school routine because it will be back in session before you know it!

–        Cut Back On Screen Time: Sometimes it’s too easy just to turn on the TV. When they’re not swimming or riding bikes, find something productive for them to do. Stock up on fun and educational activities that will help your kids continue to grow and learn over the summer break. Coloring books, crosswords, puzzles and board games are all great ideas.

–        Some Downtime Is Good: Remember that long days at the pool/beach can cause exhaustion which leads to frustration and overwhelm. Figure out what the right amount of activity is to stimulate your child and incorporate enjoyable activities into their summer routine.

–        Keep them social. Summer camps, group play and trips to the local playground are all ways to entertain children without screen time. Social settings often encourage imaginary play and creativity all while developing social skills that are essential for a child’s development.

–        Incorporate nature. Let nature be your inspiration this summer! Get your children outdoors for some fresh air. Plan a game of hide-and-seek or set up a nature scavenger hunt that will keep them entertained in a healthy way.

–        Make time for family: Our kids grow up so quickly, so make time to enjoy the summer as a family no matter how old your kids are. Whether planning a vacation out of state or simply a day trip to the beach, the best activities are enjoyed together.
