This 3-Step Plan Will Help You Get Teach Healthy Eating Habits To Your Children (INFOGRAPHIC)

As parents, we want the best — and only the best — for our children. Of course, we also want our children to be happy, and few things light up a kid’s face faster than a giant bag of Halloween candy, soda pop, and basically anything containing delicious, tooth-destroying sugars. And as our children grow up, it only gets harder to make sure they get the essential nutrition they need for proper growth and development.

Not only that, but as kids learn independence, every night can feel like you’re fighting the War for the Dinner Table. That’s why we’ve created an all-encompassing guide for parents of picky eaters everywhere that’s easy to follow and contains all the key information required to provide the best nutrition for your children at any age.

Whether you’re dealing with picky eaters toddler tantrums, supertasters, surly teens, or kids with texture problems, there are a few simple strategies for teaching kids to eat healthy every day. In fact, this entire approach can be simplified into a three-step plan:

  1. Start Outside the Kitchen
  2. Prepare Inside the Kitchen
  3. Teach at the Table

Remember: the key to providing the proper nutrition for your child is balance. While the food pyramid model is considered to be obsolete, it’s critical for your child to receive a healthy balance of protein, fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy. Keep in mind that these amounts are highly dependent on your child’s activity level, sex, and growth rate.

Kitty Wicks, LCSW, is the owner of StartingBlock Fitness, a blended psychotherapy and fitness practice in Arlington, VA. Over the course of her 20-year career, Kitty has worked with many parents whose children struggle with food issues. Her advice:

“Not defining foods as ‘all bad’ or ‘all good’, but rather encouraging moderation and healthy choices. Keeping a house full of healthy snack options for when children are hungry. Helping the child get in tune with feeling ‘full’ or ‘hungry’. Our children imitate our eating habits, so the most important thing you can do is to role model balanced, healthy eating for your child,” says Kitty.

Cory and Tia got engaged in 2006, married two years later and welcomed son Cree in 2011, before her sister Tamera had her first child, and was still a newly wed.

We know Tamera gave birth to children, 4-year old Aden John Tanner and 2-year old Ariah Talea, with husband, FOX News Correspondent Adam Housley while Tia, presumably was trying to expand her family as well.

As far back as 2013, Tia has expressed interest in having a second baby. “It’s something that we’re talking about on a daily basis, so…we’ll see!” she told E! News at the time.

It’s been a long time coming and perhaps she will share some of her journey later with the public… or not! We’re not entitled to know. (smile)

Congrats! We are so thrilled and happy for this news! Both are our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums.

7 Fun Ways to Read To and With Your Baby

by Kathryn Brown Ramsperger

Do you love to read and want your child to fall in love with books, too? Do you want them to get the academic and emotional benefits literature offers?

Here are some tips that you can start now, while you’ve still got your baby in your tummy, which will help instill a love of reading, greater empathy for others, and better bonding with you, their one and only mommy:

Start reading to them early.Babies can hear us as early as the early second trimester. At first they hear the tone and cadence of your voice, which promotes bonding, a voice they’ll carry with them always. Yet babies also learn in the womb by the last trimester. Reading to your belly will not only make them long for books once they’re born, they’ll make you two closer to each other.

  1. Don’t worry about what you read to your belly. They love your voice. Read to reduce your own stress after a long day, and they’ll respond likewise. They hear vowels first, so rhyming books are best early on. Soon, they’ll be begging for you to read those books and others.
  2. Ask for books for your baby shower. As a writer, I always bring books to baby showers, one of my childhood favorites, and one of my own books that my own 20-somethings drew illustrations for when they were little. You can request that your shower guests bring their favorite children’s book, either as an additional gift, or the only one. I mean, who needs one more mint green organic onesie?
  3.   Incorporate books or book themes in the nursery. Make sure there’s a bookshelf in their room filled with books. You’ll need a place to put all your shower, gifts, right? Plus, if your bookshelf is DIY, it will be something they’ll treasure forever, if you keep copies of their favorite books within its shelves. Primary colors and a favorite saying from a book you read each night, or their initials, will attract even the most sporty toddler. Make sure your bookcase has one empty shelf for them to eventually choose their own books.
  4. Read them books that echo their experience and perspective. My daughter is adopted. My son had to have surgery at 10 months. The books I chose for my daughter were completely different than those I chose for my son. My son loved Dr. Seuss‘ “Mr. Brown Can Moo and Sendak’s “Where The Wild Things Areand a Sesame Street book about a hospital stay. My daughter’s two favorites were Eileen Spinelli‘s “When Mama Comes Home Tonight” and Rose Lewis‘ “ I Love You Like Crazy Cakes”a book about adoption.
  5. Read them a bedtime story every night. Consistency is key to help them learn language and reading skills, and what better way to say “sweet dreams” than some parent-child together time? Be happy if they make you read it over and over. That means they love being with you and that they’re learning words and a love of reading, too.

Bonus Tip: After you finish reading their bedtime story and kiss them tonight, pick up one for yourself. Children notice what you do even more than what you say. If you have a book in your hand as much as you check your Twitter feed, they’ll notice and will probably follow suit. My novel, The Shores of Our Souls, published by TouchPoint Press, is available on amazon.combarnesandnoble.comibooks.com, and kobo.com, or ask for it at a bookstore near you.

10 Ways to Make Sure You’re Raising an Optimistic Kid

We live in a hectic, stressful world that makes it easy to be pessimistic and depressed.

However, these attitudes aren’t helpful and can actually be harmful. Every parent wants their children to be happy, healthy and optimistic about their future, but sometimes can lose sight of how to accomplish that state of mind. Kids who are often sullen and dejected can eventually end up depressed, so it’s important to do what you can as a parent to help prevent that from happening.

Here are 10 ways to make sure you are raising an optimist and not a pessimist.

1. Affection – The first step is to show your children tons of affection. Knowing they are loved and cared for is a big part of helping kids deal with adversity. Failures in life are easier to take when they know they are loved.

2.Praise – Always praise your child’s accomplishments and be specific when you do. Give them feedback that links their achievements to what they did to accomplish it. An example would be to state how all the extra studying paid off with a good grade on a test.

3.Monitor – Pay attention to what your child is watching on television, the games they play and the books they read. You should monitor their activities to make sure they’re not exposed to too many bad influences. Also, make sure they’re not attempting to accomplish too much, as taking on more than they can reasonably handle can set them up for failure.

4.Be an example – Children will often mirror their parent’s attitudes, so be a good example. Kids will only learn to be optimistic if you show them how. Parents who are continually complaining or are pessimistic will pass those traits on to their children.

5.Reinforcement – When your child expresses optimism, be sure to comment on their great attitude. This positive reinforcement will put the emphasis on the desired behavior instead of focusing on the negative.

6.Accentuate the positive – When something bad happens, always try to find the bright side. If bad weather cancels an event, find something fun to do instead. Accentuate the positive by commenting how you wouldn’t have had so much fun if the picnic wasn’t cancelled.

7.Thought catching – Teach children how to do thought catching to prevent negative behavior. When something bad happens ask them what thoughts they had so they’re aware of them and can capture the negativity. Kids often have negative thoughts without ever realizing it.

8.Minimize failures – Losing a championship or failing a test may seem like the end of the world, but it never is. Parents can raise optimists if they are successful at minimizing failures by putting them into perspective. Point out that life goes on and there will be endless opportunities down the road.

9.Promote success – Encourage kids with age appropriate activities they are able to excel at to promote success. Having unrealistic expectations only sets children up for failure, so make sure they’re not trying to do too much.

10.Laugh – The best way to encourage an optimistic attitude is with lots of laughter. Teach children how to laugh at themselves and not take everything so seriously. Laughing is the best way to diffuse a troubling situation.

Life is full of challenges and failures, so an optimistic attitude will go a long way to help your children deal with problems as they grow up. As adults, having this optimism will be an important way for them to achieve success and bounce back from failures. A positive outlook will help them in personal relationships and they can lead happy lives with better mental and physical health.

While genetics, the amount of water you drink and other factors impact whether you get stretch marks while pregnant, certainly keeping the belly moisturized and massaging it with a salve that contain natural skin-loving ingredients like Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E and pure oils,  helps. Palmer’s products are free of mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, artificial dyes and are hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested, for healthy skin during pregnancy.

“The storied ad campaigns for our stretch mark range have become a true celebration of the confidence that comes along with the joy of pregnancy and we are thrilled that Alexandra Breckenridge is the latest star to share her journey with us,” said  Jennifer Leonard, E.T. Gift Guide: 12 Gifts Under $20 for Cat Lovers

I am a recent mom to pets, a couple of guinea pigs named Rocky and Balboa. Jury Awards $26M to Brooklyn Couple Over Botched Twin Delivery

After undergoing IVF treatment, Brooklyn mom Danielle Madden Buck and her husband successfully conceived triplets.

The couple went along with docs when they recommended they bring only two babies to term because twins have a higher likelihood of survival, they said.

When Danielle started spotting at 20 weeks into her pregnancy, she went to Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park on February 9, 2010 for consultation but the overcrowded hospital with overworked staff, according to court documents, messed up by sending her home.

“They didn’t feel like anything was going on,” Danielle told The New York Post, which published an article about Buck’s story and lawsuit against the hospital this week.

By the time she went back to the hospital on February 17 that year for a routine sonogram, it was too late. One of the twin’s head was crowning.

While the doctors were able to keep Danielle  pregnant until February 28, her twin girls Aleigha and Madelyn were born, weighing around 1.5 pounds each.

A month later, Madelyn died from an infection.

Danielle told the paper that it was utter chaos before the birth, explaining that she was moved multiple times before then.

“My bed was right in front of the nursery. The nurses kept saying, ‘Would you like us to bring your baby?’ and I said, ‘I didn’t have my baby, I don’t know if my children are going to make it,’ ” she said.

What is even worse is that she was only given the chance to hold her daughter who died once, Buck reports.

Her surviving daughter is deaf and cannot speak, and suffers from kidney failure.

Buck and her husband, Andrew, sued the hospital for $13.5 million, claiming negligence and a jury of 6, three men and three women, took only 8 hours of deliberation last week to award the couple double what they sought: $26.19M!

“It’s like a baby mill,” Buck told The Post of the hospital, which had the busiest maternity ward in the state at the time, according to reports.“At the end of the day, I thought, if I file a lawsuit and there was negligence on their part, maybe they’ll think twice before they send another mother home.”

Buck conceived without medical intervention about a year after the twins’ birth and gave birth to a boy.

The hospital said in a statement, “We are disappointed by the verdict but understand how hard it is for jurors to send a family home without monetary compensation when children are involved.”

It added: “We believe excellent care was provided, and presented very credible evidence to support that point — credible enough that the family’s own attorneys chose to enter into a bracketed settlement before the jury returned its verdict.”
