How Does Cord Blood Storage Work? (VIDEO)

bellytichblog.com cord blood

Cord blood banking has grown steadily among American parents.

My husband and I had not banked our first two children’s cord blood. However, when we decided that we would be having our last child, our third, we bit the bullet and got her cord blood banked.

That was in 2007 and back then, outside of the initial set up fees and charges, the annual cost was nominal, only about $125. That is a small price to pay for insurance in case any of us or any of our close family members would need that blood for some reason, God forbid any of us get leukemia or any other blood disease. We’ve read all the literature and news that challenge the value of cord blood storage, but given that science advances each year, we didn’t want to take the risk of losing out the chance to have cord blood banked.

Its uses could be exponential in the future. Who knows!?!

Not only are parents investing in storage, grandparents, Godparents and other close family and friends are giving the gift of cord blood collection as birthday gifts to new arrivals in their families.

Not everyone who decide to bank their baby’s cord blood know what the process entails.

ConsumersAffairs.com released a 3-minute video last week that educates parents and consumers, generally, how cord blood is collected, processed and stored.

How to Spot Melanoma and Lower Your Child’s Risk

sun tips

With warmer days come more opportunities to be out in the sun. As we bask in its rays on the beach, at the park, or at the pool and during other outdoor excursions, it is very key that we keep in mind all the dangers that come with extensive sun exposure.

Parents, in particular, have to also look out for their children to make sure they are minimizing the risks associated with fun in the sun: melanoma and skin cancer.

Atlanta, Georgia-based Dr. Amy Kim, a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, offers the following advice for spotting melanoma and reducing a child’s risk of developing it:

Spotting Melanoma

First, make sure you know the ABDCEs of melanoma. These provide a guide in detecting suspicious moles.

A – Asymmetry. Moles that are asymmetric (meaning you can’t draw a line down the middle and match up both sides).

B – Borders. Moles with fuzzy or ill-defined borders.

C – Color. Moles with varying color throughout or two-toned moles.

D – Diameter. Larger moles, greater that 6mm in diameter.

E – Evolving. Moles that are changing. Moles should just exist. If any mole changes, make note and see your doctor.

  • The average person develops moles after the age of six months and has between 6 and 20 moles. People with more than 50 moles have an increased risk of melanoma and should be checked regularly by a dermatologist.
  • Birthmarks are moles that we are born with or that develop right after birth. Large birthmarks (8-12 cm equals about 3-5 inches) carry a higher risk of melanoma so it is recommended that they be removed. If your child has a large birthmark, show it to your pediatrician or dermatologist for further evaluation.
  • People do not typically develop new moles after the age of 30. Anyone who develops a new mole that doesn’t look like their others (otherwise known as an “ugly duckling”) should see their dermatologist.
  • Freckles are small brown patches that are the skin’s reaction to light exposure. If you start to see freckles on your child, slather on the sunscreen to avoid more sun exposure.

Lowering Your Child’s Risk of Melanoma

  • Regular daily use of sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher can reduce the risk of melanoma by 50%. Babies six months and older can use sunscreen on a daily basis.
  • Look for chemical-free sunscreens with the active ingredients of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both are hypoallergenic and non-irritating, but are very effective at protecting the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
  • Avoid sunscreens with nano particles, as they are so small they can pass through the skin, enter the bloodstream and end up in major organs. Spray sunscreens with nano particles can be inhaled and are not recommended. Instead, look for sunscreens with micronized particles. These sunscreens will leave a whitish film on the skin.
  • Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before sun exposure. A good rule of thumb is to apply sunscreen when putting on your baby or child’s swimsuit. This allows time for the sunscreen ingredients to bind to the skin and provide protection.
  • Reapply sunscreen at least every 1 ½ hours and after water exposure, including sweating. Often people who are sunburned failed to reapply sunscreen.
  • For added sun protection use UPF long-sleeved swim shirts and hats in addition to sunscreen.

2015 ESPY Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

espy 2015 red carpet

Yesterday was The 2015 ESPYS at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California and as usual, we spotted some of the celebrity women we have featured in the past on the Red Carpet before the show. Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Ciara, Mel B and Lisa Leslie all made a turn on the crimson strip.

Kim Kardashian West attended but did not walk the Red Carpet but did have a great seat with all of her family to witness her Step-Dad  the former Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner, accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Here is the rundown of what the five who walked the carpet wore:

ciara

I really dug the belted magenta ombre Elie Saab Fall 2014 goddess dress Ciara wore while accompanying her beau NFL’s Russell Wilson, quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. I thought her Jimmy Choo heels were hawt! She was working that side slit.

halle berry

Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry was on hand to present the Pat Tillman Award for Service to Danielle Green, a former Notre Dame basketball player, Iraq war veteran, and Purple Heart recipient. She went with a fit and flare flirty black lace and leather mini dress with bell cuffs.  It was cute. Not the best I’ve seen on her. I didn’t really dig the messy tussled hair with this outfit. I guess she was going for rocker edgy. Meh.

I did love her wrap around ankle Brian Atwood heels and the Sylva and Cie jewels.

britney spears

Britney Spears attended and presented the award to the Best Female Athlete. She looked cute but quite uncomfortable in a fringe sequined Davidson Zanine dress that looked like one of the numbers she wears in her Vegas show. All of the pics showed her with her hands covering her bum

mel b in red

America’s Got Talent judge Mel B (Melanie Brown) looked super gorge in a simple pencil length red hot dress with criscross bodice, red pumps, box clutch and cherry red lipstick. The slick back is perfect for this dress. It’s simple and elegant.

lisa leslie espy

Former WNBA player Lisa Leslie was vibrant and bright in a sunflower draped dress. It contrasted perfectly against her skin. She accented it with a box clutch, gold arm asp, bracelets and fan earrings. The sports commentator went with ringlets but would have looked better if it was an updo. She didn’t present but is the only athlete among the bunch!

Get & Maintain Ombre hair this Summer (Tips)

bellyitchblog.com ombre hair

Whether you dig it or not, Ombre hair is still to stay. The hair coloring style trend, which features gradually lightened hair from root to tip, has been seen on many celebs, on runways and in fashion mags.

Our partners at Glamazon have tips on how to maintenance Ombre hair if you dare go this  fun, yet slightly high-maintenance, route this Spring or Summer:
While ombre hair isn’t as high maintenance or as tough on your roots as dying all of your hair a single hue, you still need to treat your tresses with TLC. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts to help you keep your ombre hair looking fab at all times.
Do…Deep Condition and Keep Hair Moisturized
Just because all of your hair wasn’t dyed, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take heed to the fact that a portion of your hair has been processed and needs care. Since ombre hair usually entails going from dark to light, the use of bleach or other chemicals will probably be used. You should deep condition hair at least once a week to keep the color looking fresh and to keep hair shiny and strong. Breakage is definitely no bueno!

Do…Use the right product
You still need to use products that are for color-treated hair with the ombre look. Usually it’s best to use a sulfate-free product that says it’s for color-treated hair. Regular products can be too harsh and strip the hair of essential oils, leaving it brittle and dry.

Do…Remember That Dirty Hair Is Good… For Coloring
Although, it could be safer and yield better results by consulting a professional, if you’re a DIY beauty girl (I absolutely am), try not to wash your hair directly before coloring it. Our scalp produces natural oils that can actually help protect it from damage.

Don’t…be lazy
Just because you won’t have to touch up your roots as often, you do get a green light to just let your hair go. You still need to have regular touch-ups (depending on the permanency of the color it’s essential to get a touch-up every 5-6 months). It’s not haute to have scraggly, fried ends with unkempt dark roots.
Don’t…forget the color change has to be gradual.
Make sure the jump from a dark hue to a lighter shade isn’t too abrupt (like Ciara‘s). The way Keke Palmer‘s dark locks flow into a lighter hue is perfect.

The Hipster who wanted to Suck in Her Baby Belly while Pregnant

A 30-something new mom wrote in new Harper’s Bazaar piece that she resented her growing baby bump while pregnant so much she wanted to suck it in.

That’s right! Her baby!

The author, Annie Davies, explained being ashamed over this admission.

Davies writes in the piece:

And I felt guilty for admitting I wanted to; terrified that my ambivalence would translate into how I would feel for my soon-to-be-born child. Shouldn’t the bump have been the easy part? After all, we live in a culture that venerates pregnancy-as-accessory.

There are Pinterest pages and Tumblrs devoted to best celebrity maternity style. More and more designers are creating maternity capsule collections. Pregnancy looks good. Stylish. Sexy. I knew it. I saw it. But despite hours of perusing pregnancy style and hundreds of dollars spent on various maternity outfits, I simply couldn’t feel it.

It turns out , she had sculpted the image of a free spirit and dressed herself, got piercings and tattoos to match how she wanted others to see her as. It reads like she was a wannabe hipster, apparently.

Davies continues:

Part of it was because I simply didn’t identify as a mom. When I found out I While I absolutely wanted this child, I wasn’t sure how the persona I’d spent my entire adult life cultivating would would mesh with middle-of-the-night feedings and spit-up covered clothing.

In “Bringing Up Bebe”, a book on how the French do parenting right that became my bible throughout my first trimester, one of author Pamela Druckerman‘s key theses is that French women don’t make motherhood their whole identity. Druckerman explains that in Parisian parks, that unless a child is clinging to her and calling her maman, it’s pretty much impossible to tell whether a woman is a mother. I aspired to that European model, absent of cutesy phrases like mom jeans and mom blogs and mom’s nights out.

Davies wrote how she wanted to emulate friends she had who never talked about their children and deliberately kept their family and work life different.

Not only did she want to shield signs of her pregnancy, Davies says she was even awkward dealing with all the extra attention and other unspoken rules and office politics that come with pregnancy.

She further explained:

While the physical transformation was disconcerting, being so obviously identified as a soon to be mother felt bizarre; full of rules I didn’t understand. Appearing in public meant I constantly had to steel myself for the looks like a boy! (it wasn’t) shouts from strangers on the street and affirm to the barista that no, I didn’t want decaf coffee. At around 34 weeks pregnant, I was asked if I would be willing to potentially appear on a television segment talking about a magazine article I wrote. Of course, I wrote to the PR person, just FYI I’m going to be eight months pregnant …

I stopped after I typed those words, then deleted them. Would an expecting father ever have said something similar? Of course not. Regardless of whether or not I looked pregnant had nothing to do with whether or not I could competently discuss my work. And yet, I found myself almost instinctively apologizing, as if my pregnancy had somehow fundamentally changed me.”

In the end, Davies discovers after giving birth to her daughter Lucy this past April that a baby does become part of your life and it isn’t that easy to fragment it away, even if you tried.

Even after boasting in the article about being able to wear a bikini a few weeks after delivery, Davies says she has changed in her feelings and now would do it again differently.

Next time, she would actually decorate and flaunt her bump more.

Interesting…you thoughts on this one?

Eveyln Lozada’s New Show hints She had a Recent Miscarriage, But these Photos show Otherwise

Evelyn Lozada and Her Family Await News About Her Pregnancy Video

On the premiere episode of reality TV personality Evelyn Lozada‘s new show Livin’ Lozada on OWN TV network, the ex Basketball Wives star revealed that she was expecting her second child with fiance Carl Crawford of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The shoes-loving author and her Major League Baseball star husband only welcomed their first child together, Carl Leo only last March 2014.

Towards the end of the first episode, Lozada received a voicemail from her doctor  and she later learns that her hormone levels were dropping instead of rising. That’s not good news for any woman. She feared she had miscarried.

In a clip from the show, Lozada can be seen sharing the news with her 21-year old model daughter Shaniece, who also stars in the show:

“It’s not good,” Lozada says. “Most likely, I’m going to end up miscarrying the baby.”

And that’s were the episode ends with a teaser which preps viewers to tune in find out the fate of her pregnancy the following Saturday.

However, from the looks of her recent Instagram pics, it appears that she was able to get over that scary hurdle. Lozada appears to be hiding her bump in most of them but obviously cannot show it now. That will take away the mystique from watching the show this Saturday.

It was taped about a couple months ago so she should be about 14 weeks along by now and many women “pop” earlier after they’ve had one baby already. This would be Lozada’s third child.

We at Bellyitch assume she wouldn’t like this blog post if she were to read it given what she said about bloggers in the premiere episode.  At one point of the show when she learns that news that she landed her own show leaked early and was featured in a popular gossip blog. She railed against “f***king* sh*tty  ass bloggers”.  Wow, really? Sounds a bit like Phaedra Parks.

[Side note: Reality TV stars need Bloggers to help keep them relevant and in the public eye. It’s a symbiotic relationships and being a public figure means people may spread wrong news at times but you need to be calm and rely on thick skin to keep you above because in the grand scheme of things, nothing really matters. *Rant over* :-)]

Lozada was famously engaged to NFL football player Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson before having a very public breakup. Shaniece is the offspring from another earlier relationship.

We hope we are right and she is happily expecting her second child. *fingers crossed*

Anyway, the suspicious pics:

Dad spoofs MTV’s ‘Cribs’ showing off his daughter’s nursery (VIDEO)

mtv cribs bryan

If you haven’t already seen it, parenting blogger Bryan Canatella and his wife filmed a spoof of the popular show MTV Cribs to show off the crib they prepared for their impending arrival of daughter Cecilia (“CiCi”).

The 2 plus minutes parody which was uploaded onto the couple’s pregnancy blog called The Canatellas opens with Canatella welcoming a film crew into the nursery and then proceeds to give a tour of the various “wings” of the room, which is really just a few steps apart. It’s hilarious!

“These are all her onesies,” he says opening the changing table drawer to reveal neatly folded and organized rows. “Girl’s gotta lot of clothes and that’s just for the first three months right here. We don’t mess around.”

It’s so on point right down to the type of music usually played during one of the real episodes and how they end with the host kicking out the camera crew.

How DO pregnancy tests work? (VIDEO)

How do pregnancy tests work Tien Nguyen YouTube

In the TED-Ed video lesson, “How do pregnancy tests work?Tien Nguyen explains how each modern pregnancy test is able to tell if you’re pregnant within minutes. The concept of the modern pregnancy test started in 1963 when a small study reproduced the ancient Egyptian pregnancy test, where women would urinate on wheat and barley seeds and wait to see if they sprouted. If wheat sprouted faster, they believed it was a girl, but if barley, a boy. The 1963 study was able to predict pregnancy with a 70 percent accuracy rate, although it can’t reliably tell the sex of the baby.

Although many home pregnancy tests claim to be accurate as early as the first day of a missed period or even before, says the Mayo Clinic, it’s best to wait until one week after a missed period. OTC pregnancy tests are all designed to do one thing, detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which is produced in the earliest stages of pregnancy and tells the body not to shed the inner lining of the uterus that month. The hormone enters the bloodstream and urine when it begins production in the placenta, and increases rapidly every two to three days.

The over-the-counter (OTC) pregnancy test begins when urine is applied to the exposed end of the strip as the fluid travels up the absorbent fibers that will cross three separate zones. The first zone, the reaction zone, is where the y-shaped proteins called antibodies — they contain a handy enzyme with the ability to turn on dye molecules — will latch onto any HCG.

The urine then picks up all the AB1 enzymes and carries them to the test zone, where the results show up. This type of test is known as the sandwich assay. If HCG is present, it gets sandwiched between the AB1 enzyme and AB2 and sticks to the test zone, allowing the attached dye-activating enzyme to create a visible pattern. If there’s no HCG, the wave of urine and enzymes just passes on by.

Inside DeSean Jackson & girlfriend Kayla Phillips’ Baby Shower

dean skins
I’m a Washingtonian so I follow our local team. I just realized one of our Redskins players Desean Jackson and his girlfriend Kayla Phillips are expecting a child together later this year. …and you guys know how I love to scope/stalk celebrities’ baby showers, right? So it was a treat to spot some photos of the baby shower recently. Jackson, Phillips, their friends and some of the vendors posted some pics of the event on their personal Instagram pages.

The duo had a co-ed baby shower on a stadium rooftop with a sports locker room theme in Santa Monica, California. You could even see the bleachers below in the pics. It was perfect to align with the theme which included a cake decorated like a baseball, basketball and a football. Great given they are expecting a baby boy.

The dessert table featured sports-themed cupcakes, a cake and cake pops. It looked quite decadent yet craft and creative at the same time.  California-based Platinum Candy Buffets did an excellent job on the display.

The couple both wore white. This will be the first child for Jackson but Phillips’ second.

Fans of Jackson’s and the curious can catch more behind-the-scenes aspect of their life by catching a new reality television show on BET called, “DeSean Jackson: Home Team” on Tuesdays at 8:30pm ET/7:30 C.
