10 ocassions when it’s fine to use “Because I said so” as an anwer

Didn’t you used to get annoyed with your folks when you asked them a question as a kid and they responded with “Because I said so”?  These days, the experts will make you feel guilty for brushing off your kid or kids with that excuse, but you know what? There are times when saying “Because I said so” are perfectly appropriate! Nannyjobs.orgs had a funny listing:

  1. When your kid asks why they can’t go swimming in the winter: It’s fine to say something like that it’s too cold or that they would catch a cold, but if they continue to say why then you need to use, “Because I said so, that’s why!”
  2. When the reason to their question is too complicated to explain: Why do I have to wash my hands before dinner?  Your kid is 3 so it probably isn’t going to work to try to explain that germs are bad and by washing they will get rid of most of the germs, but not all of the germs.  Your little one isn’t going to understand the real answer so just tell them because you said so.
  3. When you don’t know the answer: This is the best time to use the statement, “Because I said so, that’s why!”  Your child asks why they have to wash their hands after they sneeze.  You say, because there are germs on your hands and you could make other kids sick.  Why?  I don’t know won’t really cut it at that point.  Just tell them because you said so.
  4. When you don’t want to explain: Your son wants to know why he can’t get an earring or your daughter wants to know why she can’t have the micro mini skirt.  There probably is a good reason that you don’t want them to do those things, but do you really want to explain it?  Just tell them because you said so!
  5. When they don’t want to wear their helmet on their bike: Mommy I don’t want to wear my helmet, it will mess up my hair.  Why do I have to?  Or Daddy, why do I have to wear a helmet when I’m on my bike, none of the other guys do?  Kids think they are invincible and won’t understand so just tell them because you said so.

Shakira announced 2nd ‘World Baby Shower’ for charity

photo: Jaume Laiguana

Colombian pop superstar Shakira and her beau Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique announced their second annual “World Baby Shower” to benefit poor mothers and children globally.

The multi-Grammy award-winning artist is the Goodwill Ambassador for the UNICEF Education Fund and wrote that she wishes to use “the blessing of her child’s imminent birth to save the lives of other, less fortunate children around the world,”adding that “if every expectant mother having a baby shower decided to include among her gift registry some of these ‘inspired gifts’ that UNICEF offers, we could collectively save the lives of hundreds of thousands of children all over the globe.”

Donors can contribute to the purchase of midwifery kits, medical equipment, vaccinations, blankets, books and a soccer ball.

The couple also challenged others.

“With the explosion of social media, celebrities aren’t the only ones who have platforms that can reach mass audiences, and we want this movement to keep going long after our baby shower has ended, so we want to invite them to host their own baby showers with UNICEF as well.”
Nice! Shakira announced her second pregnancy last July.

Forget what society says, Let’s Re-Define “Having it all” (VIDEO)

Each year, social

scientists reveal think pieces, studies and surveys asking whether women truly

can have it all: the career, the husband and the family at the same time. I’ve teamed up with Nissan on today’s post on re-defining what it means to “have it all.”
The truth is the

definition of “all” cannot be uniform and apply to all people. If we

are malleable, honest and upfront with our personal needs and goals, we can

redefine what’s most important in our own lives and strive for that.
I was truly inspired by celeb blogger Latham Thomas‘s video presentation that is part of my blog

content partner Glam Media’s “Haute Havens” video series. Lifestyle

maven Latham Thomas is all about living well. That includes her home, too:

I connect with Thomas’s

style aesthetic and lifestyle, easily. Like Thomas, I too enjoy daily shots of

green herbs and juices to cleanse the palate, taking regular calming

and stress-release baths, accenting my daily looks with a variety

of scarves and doing strength and balance exercises like yoga

to keep fit. Thomas’s home too embodies what I value most in living

quarters: clean open spaces that connect with all living areas and ample cozy

nooks to snuggle up with a good book and a hot cup of tea.
These pleasures are

among the things I, personally, value and if I am able to make them part of my

life, then I am “having it all” but in a way defined by me. In our society, we

are constantly seeing messages defining what we should value, but if we can

step back and appreciate what we’ve accomplished and all the little things

already in our lives, we would quickly realize that we may already have it

all.
With its stylish looks and premium interior, the Nissan Altima is just as much an individual as you are. Not fitting into one mold is what makes the Nissan Altima not only unique, but very exciting!

Congratulations to the reigning, but retired, Australian Open champion Li Na who announced to a crowd of 15,000 in Melbourne, Australian yesterday that she is expecting her first child. During a ceremony to commemorate the launch of a tournament at the Rod Laver Arena, Li announced, “[Husband and coach] Dennis [Jiang] and I are so excited. Our first child will arrive in the summer,” Li told the crowd to raucous applause and cheers. It was right before Roger Federer played a night match.Shortly after wining her first Australian Open last year, the Chinese Tennis star retired. Previously, she had won the 2011 French Open and was a finalist in Australia in 2011 and 2013.
After the ceremony, Li posted a super sweet message on Facebook to her fans. We’ve covered tennis champs Roger Federer, Kim Clijsters and Lindsay Davenport before and are pleased to welcome Li to bumpwatch!
I watched Na play at the US Open last year. I was rooting for her to win back in 2011 when she played the Australian Open so long a fan. What a power player and soon to be a power mom!

7 ways to keep the kids busy during winter months

Winter doesn’t have to be a dreary and dreadful time. We are stuck in doors and may be sidelined but delays and cancellations when the weather gets bad. Finding things to do with the children that doesn’t involve electronics can be a challenge but our friends at summernanny.com offer the following tips for you to make winter months easier to deal with:

Bundle up and enjoy your favorite activities. Cold temperatures and snowy roads don’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Sure, it takes a lot more time and effort to get ready to go outside, but it’s worth it. Once you get putting on the snowsuit, boots, hats and gloves down to a routine, you’ll practically whiz right through it. And when you’re all bundled up and outdoors, kids can enjoy many of the same things they do in other seasons. You can go for a walk, play on the swings, run around the backyard or hit the slide. You can enjoy being together and being active, even when the thermometer dips.

Get back to basic outdoor fun. There’s no beating basic winter fun like sledding down a favorite hill, building a snowman complete with carrot nose and button eyes, having a snowball fight with siblings or neighborhood friends or ice skating on the local frozen pond. This is the stuff childhood memories are made of. Instead of watching from the sidelines, be an active part of the memory making. Jump on the sled for your own ride down the hill. It’s just as fun as an adult as it was as a child.

Create new winter games. There’s no end to the creative ways you can have fun outside during the winter months. Make colored icicles, paint in the snow with colored water, add fun shapes to the iced sensory table or set up a snowball target game. You can create a fun, engaging outdoor environment that your kids will enjoy and learn from. Get kids involved in developing new, fun things to do outside. Kids have amazing imaginations, and with a few simple household supplies they’ll create games and play spaces that will keep them occupied for long stretches of time.

Take advantage of local indoor play spaces. Many community centers offer indoor play spaces during the winter months. These spaces usually offer a free play area where kids can run, jump, twirl and bounce. Tumbling mats and cushioned climbing squares allow kids to release their pent up energy in a safe environment. Indoor spaces also offer riding toys like tricycles, scooters and kid sized cars. Some even provide kid sized props like stop signs, gas pumps and police stations; encouraging kids to create their own cities and towns. This type of imaginary play can keep your child busy for hours on end.

Head to the pool. It’s seems like an odd time to go swimming, but the winter months are the perfect time to enroll your child in lessons or reinforce his current swimming skills. It’s a perfect way to get some exercise into his weekly schedule and it’s lots of fun to boot. When summer rolls around, he won’t be spending his time learning to swim or getting reacquainted with the water. He’ll be ready to enjoy the local pool, lake or beach.

Find a local playgroup. If you have to be inside, it’s always more fun with friends. Connect with other parents or caregivers in your area through online sites or local parenting groups. Some groups have a multiple age make-up, which is a great fit if you have more than one child. Other groups focus on one age range, which is perfect if you have one child or are looking for a social outlet for a particular child. These weekly groups give your child a fun activity to look forward to and they provide you with social connections, resources and support.

Do some of the things you don’t have time for in the busy summer months. When the weather’s nice, chances are you’re too busy to take on some of the projects your kids would like to do. Wintertime is your chance to catch up. Spend an afternoon baking cookies for the local fire department. Pull out all the arts and crafts supplies and create new art pieces for your child’s bedroom wall. Long, dark afternoons can be the perfect excuse for tackling those put off projects.

Good luck parents!

Celebrities and their Glam Squads (PHOTOS)

One of the ways celebrities remind us that they have it way better than us is by showing off their elaborate glam squads in social media.
It’s not necessarily a new concept to see a photo of hairstylist, manicurist, stylist, make up artist and personal assistant all tending to a celebrity woman at the same time. It’s a common shot in glamour, hair  and style magazines.
Now with social media, celebs get to set up staged photos and give us a glimpse of their glam squad in action.
But it is also a great excuse and opportunity for them to tag or “@” mention the glam professionals and help promote their business and help get them more clients as well. Hence why some celebrity stylists and make up artists have become celebrities themselves over time (see June Ambrose, Rachel Zoe and the guys from the Real Housewives of Atlanta)
Some enterprising salons have seized on the interest of regular women wanting the celebrity treatment and offer traveling  glam squads.

Companies like Miami-based GlamSquad (pictured above) will bring a team to you starting at $75. Not bad!

Here are a few celeb glam squad pics we’ve seen shared by our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums and others personalities.

8 Values from MLK to share with your kids

Tomorrow is holiday to celebrate the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but for many kids, it’s just another excuse to have a day off. If you are a parent and want to use the day off to share some information about the assassinated Civil Rights Leader and transformative figure, consider passing along these 8 values we extracted from FamilyEducation.com:

Equality:  Treat all people the way you want to be treated — with kindness and fairness. Think about how we all are different from each other in some ways, but we are the same in so many ways: Inside we all have feelings and deserve to be happy.

Faith: Believe in yourself and your goals and dreams. Don’t give up or let worry take over when something gets difficult.

Nonviolence: Solve conflicts peacefully, without ever hitting or hurting someone. When you feel angry or upset, express your feelings in words and talk about what you need to make things better.

Education: Work hard in school, and find subjects you are passionate about. Find books that interest you to make reading a part of your life.

Love: When someone treats you poorly, try to treat them well in return. Use your energy to love yourself and help others.

Leadership: Be a leader in a club, on a sports team, or in the classroom. Feel confident in yourself, show good sportsmanship, and help your peers work out conflicts.

Selflessness: Volunteer to help a charity. Invite friends and relatives to come and volunteer with you.

Hope: Think of others throughout history who endured hard times. Even if challenges slow you down, don’t give up.
