10 child discipline mistakes

Disciplining children doesn’t necessarily mean punishment. Rather it is to train or develop by instruction or exercise, according to Webster’s Dictionary definition. So many of us get it wrong and what results are bratty uncontrollable kids at times. Here are some common discipline mistakes assembled by the Montgomery County, Maryland  Department of Health and Human Services and Child Welfare Services that I found helpful and I plucked my favorite to share:
  1. Demanding that children apologize. If a child is not sincere or does not know why he is apologizing, forcing him to apologize may not work.
  2. Giving in to tantrums or whining. It teaches that misbehaving to get what they want works.
  3. Trying to bribe or threaten children to get them to behave.Again, many of us do this when we need a child to hush up or when we need immediate acquiescence but again, a savvy kid will pick up on it and use this trick against parents.
  4. Comparing the misbehavior of one child to the appropriate behavior of another child. Doing this is the first step to diminishing a child’s self esteem and the future of them thinking they are not good enough.
  5. Making threats the adults will not carry out. Kids are smart. It’s just a matter of time before they realize your empty threats are just that – empty.
  6. Making promised the adult cannot keep. Besides setting yourself up for failure, you are also setting yourself up to get whined at for hours until you fulfill the promise. Not a good idea. No promises, if you can help it.
  7. Offering choices where none exist. Again, an adult is setting herself for a serious breakdown when a child learns that going to the zoo is not really an option to going to the dentist.
  8. Trying to shame or embarrass the child. Shaming also is one of the early steps to developing a child who has low self-esteem and feel devalued.
  9. Rewarding inappropriate behavior. Doing this teaches a child that  there are no consequences for bad acts and it grows a child who may not have remorse for lying, cheating or doing other bad acts.
  10. Calling a child names. This is never a good idea especially not from a parent or caregiver.
Parenting is very tough and gets tougher each year and with each generation as various outside forces and technology compete with parents wishes for their kids. Hang in there and hang tough. The rewards are greater than the challenges.

First photo of a bird flying with a baby bump

The first ever photo of a pregnant bird with a visible baby bump while in flight  has emerged and is making its way virally through scientific & environmental blogs & journals.
The image was captured on December 22, 2013 by researchers in a boat in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Réunion, the only breeding site of the critically endangered Mascarene petrel.

To lure some of the flock to their location for observation, the team threw some fish and bait overboard. They managed to lure 33 birds, 12 of which they photographed including this expecting mama bird.
Scienttists wrote in the bulletin of the British Ornithologists’ Club that the image is the first document of any bird flying while obviously bearing an egg.

FBI: China-bound flight with Mom allegedly kidnapping her son returns to VA mid-flight

A plane departing from the DC area heading to China was diverted back mid-flight after police were notified that a mom on board with her son had a one way ticket for the both of them and was allegedly planning to kidnap the child and not return to the US.

United Airlines pilots got a request from FBI agents asking them to flight back to Dulles International Airport. When the flight landed, agents arrested Wenjing Liu “under probably cause of international parental kidnapping.”

Lu, a Chinese citizen, married a Leesburg, Virginia man in 2007 with whom she bore one son. The couple divorced in 2013 but the custody arrangement states that “neither party could travel with the child outside the United States without written and notarized consent of the other party,”

Liu emailed her ex husband saying she was taking her son to visit her dying grandmother in China, the Washington Post reports. When the ex replied that the son would miss the start of the school year, Liu replied that the tickets were purchased and they were leaving immediately.

That is when he called the police.

The plane departed around noon and returned to Dulles at 5pm.

A friend of the blog who works at the US State Department’s division that deals with abductions tells us there are hundreds of cases annually where natives of foreign nations married to Americans kidnap their children without consent and carry them back to their country of origin.

Breastfeeding & Pumping at Work: Know Your Rights

Many American women do not yet know that the current US federal law states about what rights women have to pump their milk at work; and what accommodations they are entitled to get from their employers.
Tom Spiggle, author of You’re Pregnant? You’re Fired!,” who focuses on pregnancy discrimination in the workplace, says that if you are breastfeeding your child, the right to pump milk at work under federal law remains a bit complicated. The Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as Obamacare, requires employers to allow women to pump breast milk while they are at work, but like many federal regulations covering American workers, it’s shot through with loopholes.
“For the first time, women constitute more than half of the workforce and the fastest growing `segment is women with children under the age of three,” says Spiggle. “Although many workplaces now provide lactation rooms and staggered breaks for breastfeeding mothers, they’re often doing so voluntarily as a good business practice to help retain female employees and not as a matter of law. And a good business practice it is.”
Spiggle says the good news is if a woman is covered under the law, her employer must provide a “reasonable break time” to pump milk each time you need to during the day, which is typically every few hours. That includes any time she would need to retrieve and use any type of breast pump. She must also be given a private space that is not a bathroom where she won’t be bothered by coworkers or customers. (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a dedicated lactation room, however.)
The bad news is a woman’s breast-pumping time doesn’t have to be paid, unless her coworkers also get paid breaks. And not everyone is covered by the new law. For starters, employers only have to meet the requirement if they have 50 or more employees, but as it turns out, only three percent of America’s small businesses (defined as those with fewer than 500 workers) fit that definition in 2010. A company with fewer than 50 employees must comply with the law unless it can prove that it would be an “undue hardship” to do so. The Department of Labor has made it clear that this standard is a very high hurdle to meet.
Also, only those women who are “non-exempt” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are covered. The FLSA is a complicated law, but non-exempt employees are generally hourly workers who must be paid overtime. If you make more than $455 a week and have any supervisory responsibility, you may be exempt and therefore not covered by the breastfeeding law. This big loophole leaves out a lot of breastfeeding mothers.
“In a perfect world, bosses would be understanding and accommodate nursing moms’ needs during those few months when they are pumping milk,” adds Spiggle. “After all, few people dispute the benefits of breastfeeding for babies. It’s healthier than formula, not to mention cheaper.”

Good review! Hope this clears everything up.

Celebrity Pregnancy: To Hide Pregnancy or Disclose Early

We learned recently that George Clooney’s fiance Amal Alamuddin is not pregnant as widely reported, neither is Duchess Catherine (Kate Middleton), who both were victim to the very common celebrity pregnancy rumors speculation. IB Times even posted a photo essay with proof why the wife to Prince William was not pregnant and dealing with a miscarriage.
Conventional wisdom is to wait until the pregnancy is 3 months along to announce to friends and family. Most celebs do that as well. Currently preggers Kourtney Kardashian didn’t wait and shared news about her second pregnancy when she was only 9 weeks along. Some speculated it was done to deflect attention away from her sister Khloe who was dealing with a troubled marriage at the time. Recently,  Michelle Duggar’s daughter Jill Duggar reacted to chatter over her decision to choose to disclose her pregnancy early.
They didn’t even wait for fans to notice a bump and start speculating.
But what about those currently pregnant women who did wait? We went over recent pics and noticed that although they tried Shakira, Zoe Saldana, Mila Kunis and Eva Mendes looked and did things (like cusp their belly) that gave away the fact they really were pregnant even amidst wild buzz that they were expecting!
They fooled no one! Ha! Congrats moms-to-be!

VIRAL: Dad turns preschooler into a superhero using movie magic (VIDEOS)

Okay this kid can really say, “My dad is cooler than your dad,” and be right.
James Hashimoto‘s dad, Daniel  is an after-effects artist at DreamWorks studios.
In a series of 10 to 12 second short videos shared on YouTube  which have gone viral, Daniel Hashimoto shows his 3-year old goofing off in a toy store, at home, at the dinner table doing some pretty amazing stuff, thanks to the movie magic!
Dad says his pre-schooler’s active imagination directs some of the videos. James and mom Mandy Richardville, engages “in his imaginative time,” Daniel Hashimoto tells TODAY.
“He lives in a very fantasy-based house,” he added sharing that although James doesn’t watch much television he does enjoy classic Disney films each week.
“That fuels his imagination for a full week or longer,” Hashimoto says. “His mom does a lot of imaginative, superhero play, running around house. Usually, when I get home, he has a fun, creative burst of whatever he’s playing during the day.”
