10 ways to save money at the grocery store

It’s Sunday! Grocery shopping for the week time.
Enjoy this Bellytich Rewind
According to the USDA a family of four spends approximately $200 per week on groceries. Over the course of the year, that $200 per week adds up pretty quickly. And while groceries are never going to be something that you cut out of your budget, even the USDA admits that there is room for considerable savings.  If you were to become what the USDA considers a “thrifty” family of four you could end up saving $70 a week on groceries, which totals up to $3,640 a year!
If you’re looking for ways to shave money off your grocery bill, consider these tips.

  1. Buy beans dried instead of canned.  By purchasing dried beans and cooking them yourself you can save 60% on the total cost of beans.  You are probably thinking that you don’t have time to prepare dried beans, but if you cook the beans on the stove while you are home on the weekend, you can package them up into portions, freeze them, and then defrost them as needed.
  2. Buy generic when you can.  Buying the generic brand over the brand name food can help you save up to 50% on an item.  Macaroni and cheese is a great example of this. The name brand blue box costs $1.05 whereas the generic brand runs about $ .45.  That’s a savings of 57% on one item.
  3. Look for locally grown, in season produce.  Farmers markets usually open in early summer and continue to sell through the fall.  Buying locally grown fruits and veggies will not only support local farmers, it will also support your grocery budget. Not to mention the produce tastes better, is better for you, and is cheaper.  Some stores will also advertise that they buy from local farmers, and these products will also be cheaper because they are plentiful and in season.
  4. Purchase meat in larger quantities.  Many times grocery stores will offer a discount if you buy a “family” package of meat.  Once you buy your meat, divide it into portions and freeze it.
  5. Compare pricing by size.  Have you ever noticed that sometimes stores put items on sale, but it’s actually cheaper to buy a larger size of the same item?  For example, if the store has ketchup on sale, 2 for $3 for the 16 oz. bottle check to see how much the bigger bottle costs. You may find that the 32 oz. bottle costs $2.75, so you can save $ .25 and only have one bottle to store.
  6. Watch the sale ads.  By buying what is on sale you will maximize your savings.  When you sit down to create the menu for the week, take a look at the sale ads for that week.  If baby back pork ribs are on sale this week it would be silly to plan to make beef ribs for dinner and pay twice as much per pound.  Maybe you are really craving pork chops, but they aren’t on sale this week and pork tenderloin is.  Making adjustments to your menu based on buying on sale can save you money.
  7. Price match ad items from other stores. Most stores will price match with the ads from other stores.  This will allow you to get the sale prices on certain items, but avoid having to run all over town picking up a few items here and a few items there.  So you’ll have a cost savings in your food and your gas expenses.
  8. Plan menus for the week ahead.  By planning out your menus in advance you will create a list of items that you need for those meals.  Buy what’s on your list and nothing more.  If you go to the store with a plan then you will be less likely to buy unnecessary extras.  Planning for the full week of menus also reduces the number of trips to the grocery store.
  9. Avoid convenience items.  If you buy your cheese in a block and grate it yourself, you will save about $3 per pound.  The same goes for any other convenience item like pre-cut fruit or pre-chopped onions; you are paying for someone else to cut stuff up for you.
  10. Use coupons.  Consumers saved approximately $4.6 billion a year by using coupons.  Keep in mind that it only saves you money if you use a coupon on an item that you would have bought anyway.  Don’t spend money on items just because you have a coupon for it.

How Ciara lost 60lbs in baby weight after four months

By now, readers of this blog know my severe disdain for commercial, media and brand messaging that push an unrealistic ideal when it comes to post-baby weight loss. It’s destructive because it sets up regular women who have jobs, other kids at home, family obligations and who don’t have the resources and funds to afford private chefs, personal trainers and home delivery meals into thinking that if they haven’t done the same, they are failures.
Well singer Ciara was the latest celebrity to make a massive post-baby weight loss claim directly, not through a salacious tabloid, as we usually see.  She seems to be promoting a campaign to push Calvin Klein underwear, in a couple of super hot photos she posted on her Instagram account Friday.
Ciara is a longtime celebrity spokesperson/model for the brand.
“After Delivering My Son I Feel Like There’s Nothing I Can’t Do. I Feel Like I Can Conquer The World. #ANewMe #NewMusic. So Proud To Rock #mycalvins 60lbs later!!” she wrote in the caption space about the above photo.
Ciara gave birth to son Future Zahir Wilburn on May 19th and apparently spent all her life in the gym after to get her body back to tip top shape, and drop that much amount of weight that fast. That is tremendous even if the average woman instantly loses about 10 or so from the baby, placenta, and fluids from post-delivery drop in water from  bloating.

I feel so proud to say that 4 months after delivering a 9 lbs. 10 oz. baby, I can finally rock My Calvin’s! #mycalvins

@-webkit-keyframes”dkaXkpbBxI”{ 0%{opacity:0.5;} 50%{opacity:1;} 100%{opacity:0.5;} } @keyframes”dkaXkpbBxI”{ 0%{opacity:0.5;} 50%{opacity:1;} 100%{opacity:0.5;} }

“I feel so proud to say that 4 months after delivering a 9 lbs. 10 oz. baby, I can finally rock My Calvin’s! #mycalvins,” the “Get Up” singer captioned this one.
She gave some insight into her motivation to US Weekly
“You go from the mommy gym at home to the real gym and then you go to the stage,” she said. “For me it’s all about not only getting back into the place that I was in before. I had a baby but now, going even further.”
She added, “I want to be one of those moms and women that when I look back, I know that I always stayed focused. And I think it’s about keeping your eyes on the prize.”
Her celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson shared some of her secrets.
“When you say she’s working out every day, that sounds like it’s crazy but it’s not,” he told People magazine last month. “It’s a ritual. She’s showering every day too. She’s not destroying herself.”
He added: “She’s working hard, she’s getting it done, she’s eating properly, she’s getting sleep while she can, and so she’s getting leaner and stronger.”
The fitness guru explained that her workouts are far from the ordinary.
“Depending on where we are in the week, there’s a focus on pushing movements, pulling movements; there’s lower body, there’s working different planes of motion, whether it’s front to back, side to side rotation,” he stated. “It’s about keeping her moving…There are a lot of intervals in there. It doesn’t make for a happy camper, but [it produces] great results. You see the body, she’s already right there.”
Based on this commentary, it looks as if she really did it the hard way and not through post birth surgery as with Kim Zolciak, and others.
Bonus: If you watch the WE TV show, you may know that Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Tamar Braxton-Herbert’s  sister Trina accused her of getting post baby liposuction and it erupted in a  major fight with Tamar denying the allegation. phew!

Online Negotiating Maternity Leave & Transitioning Back to Work Course: A look behind the Series

We sat down with the instructor behind the new online course designed to help new mothers negotiate their maternity leave and transition back smoothing to work. Course creator Neneh Diallo hopes the class with instruct women on how to negotiate what works best for them and their specific employer and other strategies for work-life balance. She is launching it as part of the new Moms With Dreams University, an online platform that empowers mom with life and work skills.
Crucially, this mom of three, including twins, will instruct students on how to create work-life balance, identify and overcome that dreaded and omnipresent “mom guilt.”  We know many veteran moms which there was a course like this around when they were transitioning back to work.  If you’re a new mom, first time mom-to-be in the working world, or even a seasoned mom, first time in the position of having to transition back to work, you’re in luck.
Diallo gives us some insight on how the online course (which starts this Tuesday, October 7 and cost a very reasonable $299) came about and its goals for students:
When did you come up with the idea for the class?
When I was about to go on maternity leave with my first child I had no idea what to expect.  Of course I had questions about how I would be a mother, how I would interact with her.  What my new life would be like.  However, it dawned on me that I had no clue what that life would be like once I went back to work.
I remembered my older sister went back to work six weeks after delivering her first child.  I thought that was ridiculous!  You are just getting into your routine and bonding with the baby and then snap! – time to go back to work? I had to think about that.
So I sat down and came up with a plan that I thought would work for me and my boss.  I had to make sure that this was a win for him as well.  He couldn’t feel as though he was losing an employee – and being that women can be perceived as “changed” and “unfocused” when they become mothers, I had to make sure he knew that I had put some thought into it.
When I returned I was the first one who started to telecommute on a regular basis once a week.  That was unheard of in my organization.
Since then, women about to go on maternity leave have come to me for advice on how to transition out and back into work.  They seek advice on how I was able to balance my two worlds – I also got a double promotion when I returned from maternity because I had a work plan that demonstrated my work and my worth.
Other women wanted to know my secret, so now I’m ready to share it with a wider audience and show them how they can do it all.  Since then, I’ve had twins so there’s a plan for that to!
What will the typical curriculum look like?
The first week will talk about negotiating skills.  So many women don’t negotiate well because we feel like we don’t deserve to ask for what we want.  I share techniques that will help women feel like they can ask for what they deserve and not feel guilty about it. Students will also get tips on how to get the work-life balance that works.
And let me say this up front – ‘balance’ doesn’t exist.  It just doesn’t.  You have to prioritize and decide what is going to get done now and what can wait for later.
We’ll also discuss strategies to stay relevant in the workplace.  Let’s remove the “mommy brain” dialogue and refocus your supervisor to recognize you as a valued, contributing team member and make them respect your boundaries.  There are so many women I know who go home after working 10 hour days, take care of their kids and husbands and then log on again from 9-11pm.  So guess what happens? Your boss will start expecting that of you and sees that you are available at all times even when you should probably be spending that time with your husband, reading a book, or watching Scandal!
What is the typical student you anticipate, like who is the course designed for?
One would assume that this course is just for new working mothers.  However, I must say that seasoned moms can also take this course because life really does change when you have more than one child.  Your goals may change and your expectations on yourself ans a mother and worker may change too.
After the birth of my twins I now had four children with completely different needs.  I had to adjust my work schedule. I had to set new parameters around when I would be available.
And I made a career switch because I knew that my current career was not suitable to my new priorities and a change needed to happen.  And I was able to get everything I wanted while staying with a company whose mission I still wanted t be a part of. This course if for new and seasoned moms will walk away learning more about themselves and what they want than they even realized.
How does one register for the class?
To register for the class, students need to sign up on http://bit.ly/ZhMAnm . It is an easy to use platform for live presentations.

Tell me about your qualifications to teach the class?
I am a trained executive coach. I received my training from Presence-Based Coaching, an International Coaching Federation accredited institution. And more importantly, I’ve received my Ph,D as a mother of four kids 🙂
Can someone sign up after classes have begun?
The goal is for students to receive live instruction, but if someone can’t start until the 2nd class and they want to register, they would receive the recording for the first class.
What has been the reaction response been?
Women are excited.  They’ve told me that they have never heard of a class like this being offered and that it would be a great resource.
I encourage you to go sign up! http://bit.ly/ZhMAnm

Woman becomes first womb transplant patient to give birth, Gives cancer patients hope

A woman born without a uterus gave birth last month to a baby using an implanted womb she got from a friend in her 60s, the BBC reports.
The baby, a boy born in September at 36 weeks gestation, was from one of 11 embryos produced from the woman’s working ovaries via IVF at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
After the IVF, doctors implanted a womb from a 61-year old friend donor who had gone through the menopause seven years prior.
Doctors gave the woman, who has asked for anonymity, drugs to suppress the immune system so her body wouldn’t reject the new womb.
A year after the transplant, doctors implanted the frozen embryos in the woman which eventually led to a pregnancy, medical journal The Lancent notes.
The baby’s father told the Associated Press his son was “amazing”  adding “he’s no different from any other child, but he will have a good story to tell.”
This is welcome news for other women born without wombs and cancer patients who lose their functioning womb following treatment.
Before, their only option to have a genetic baby would have been gestational surrogacy.
This is not the first highly publicized womb transplant case.
Last year, a 22-year old Turkish woman, also born without a womb, got pregnant following a womb transplant from a dead donor, but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage.
No news whether she was able to eventually have a baby, if not by carrying it herself, through other means.
