My pick for Michelle Obama’s African State Dinner Dress

Yesterday, US President Barack Obama,  a son of an African man, hosted the most heads of states at the White House at the same time during a formal dinner to commemorate the end of the African Leaders Summit.

First Lady Michelle Obama opted to wear a gorgeous neon yellow dress by Nepal-born designer Prabal Gurung and looked phenomenal as usual in the beautifully feminine chiffon dress by the fashion veteran who only became a United States citizen last year. Score one for immigrants! She accented the look with oversized gold earrings and gold bangles.

I must admit, though, that I yearned for her to dress in an African design especially given that her husband’s lineage directly links to Kenya. I do understand the importance of not necessarily playing politics and being neutral.

Dr. Jill Biden, the Second Lady and wife to Vice President Joe Biden, however, did go with an African wax print dress with origins to Congo.  A Washington Post  piece noted how Dr. Biden met many African women involved in textile trade as a means of earning money for themselves, their families and community, and wanted to pay homage to those women she met on her recent journey.

Bravo!

I thought to use this opportunity to highlight again one of my favorite local African designer Finda Onuigbo, a Nigerian immigrant who lives in Maryland and is the go-to designer for West African print ball gowns and dresses. She designs and hand crafts and sews each design custom-made for her clients and makes a living doing so. So can’t wait to see her take off to the next level.

Anyway, hat tip to my pals Marie Bangura of Millie’s Bites and Kay Savvy for putting me on to Finda.

If I had a say in the matter, I would’ve outfitted Mrs. O to dress in the stunning Finda Creations above, an orange top and skirt wax fabric dress with a blue sash at the waist, above, modeled by the gorgeous Sierra Leonean-American model Sarran Jabbie.

Here are a few other fave Finda Creations of mine:

10 Celebrity Parenting Fails and How to Avoid Them

As challenging as it can be to raise a child while hoping to instill good morals, values and behaviors, it can be even more difficult to parent a child in the spotlight. Nevertheless, fame is not an excuse for inappropriate or disturbing parenting fails. See how these celebs have provided a clear-cut example for what not to do as a parent and learn how to avoid making the same mistakes.
1. Royal Car Seat Fail
When Prince George made his first outing while leaving St. Mary’s Hospital on July 25, 2013, new parents William and Kate did not properly secure the royal baby in his car seat, according to reports. The baby was swaddled tightly, making it difficult for his royal parents to buckle him tight enough into the seat. Although mom rode in the backseat with her newborn and the royal couple was escorted by security, the risk posed to the royal baby was evident.
  • How to Avoid this Parenting Fail:According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, when placing an infant in a rear-facing car seat, the harness straps should be placed through the slot that is at or below your child’s shoulders. Harness straps should always lie flat, not twisted, and the chest clip should be tight and snug enough that extra material cannot be pinched at the shoulder. When buckling the chest clip, make sure it is at armpit level.
2. Degrading Your Children
Divorce is never a pleasant experience for couples, but when you involve your child in the bitterness, it can have devastating effects. The infamous 2007 divorce of actors Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger turned even more bitter when a voicemail message from Baldwin degrading his 11-year old daughter Ireland was leaked to the media. The message reveals Baldwin calling his daughter a “rude, thoughtless little pig,” accompanied by a threat to straighten her out.
  • How to Avoid this Parenting Fail:According to Karyl McBride, Colorado-based licensed family and marriage therapist, shaming and humiliating children, publicly or privately, is emotionally abusive. Parents, especially, are expected to provide safety, acceptance, protection and empathy for their children. When a parent is emotionally abusive, the long-term effects can cause children to grow up with little to no self-worth. Instead of lashing out at your child and humiliating him or her with words, step back, regain composure and calmly express your concerns with behavior versus attacking the child’s sense of self.
3. Driving With a Baby in Your Lap
Who can forget the images of Britney Spears driving her SUV with her then 4-month-old son on her lap? Although she claimed to be harassed by paparazzi, the danger she put her child in as she drove away made national newsin 2006. In a media release, Spears defended her actions by stating she was “terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger.”
  • How to Avoid this Parenting Fail:Although most people are not being chased by the paparazzi on a daily basis, a child’s safety in a vehicle is top priority regardless of the situation. Even if you are driving a short distance, your child must be properly secured in a car seat that is installed and buckled according to the guidelines stipulated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

How to Fake the Pregnancy Glow (STEPS)

When you are pregnant, extra blood flows through your face and combined with fluids, you are said to have a pregnancy glow. But if you are throwing up, have sensitive skin or getting breakouts, as is also common during pregnancy, you might find yourself wondering when you’ll get the glow.
You can fake it with these tips for getting that pregnancy glow:

Step 1 – The Start
The first place to start is on the inside, drinking 8 – 10 glasses of water a day will do wonders for clearing your skin and helping to flush out water retention too. A good prenatal vitamin combined with a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and omega rich foods will help too.

Step 2 – The Cleanser

Whether you suffer from dry, normal or oily skin its important to wash your face thoroughly twice a day. Using a gentle exfoliater  to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation, banishing dull skin for good.
For best results apply in circular motions with your fingertips and rinse off with lukewarm water. Patting rather than rubbing your face dry can also help prevent blotchy skin and spider veins as you’re less likely to break the tiny capillaries that sit just under the surface of your skin.

Step 3 – The Moisturizer

Using a good moisturizer after cleansing is a must for gorgeous glowing skin. Massaging a fragrance free, sensitive moisturizer  into your face and neck will really help to give your complexion a lift without irritating your skin. If possible it’s best to go for a moisturizer that contains an SPF factor to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays especially as this can also help to reduce the likelihood of chloasma (brown patches) developing.

Step 4 – The Base

Blend a light base  into your skin with your fingertips. It’s specially designed to conceal dark circles and skin imperfections with minimal effort so you needn’t spend hours blending for that flawless finish. Tinted moisturizers and foundations containing light reflecting particles are also great for giving that dewy, smooth finish we all wish we had naturally.

Report: Gay and Lesbian teens get pregnant to avoid homophobic bullying

Gay and Lesbian Canadian teens have a higher risk of becoming pregnant or causing a pregnancy, a British Columbia health survey revealed. The 2013 report from the findings also showed  gay and bisexual teen boys are nearly four times more likely to cause a pregnancy, and lesbian and bisexual girls are more than twice as likely to get pregnant.

Researchers link the high rate to teens trying to circumvent bullying, harassment and discrimination and camouflaging their sexual orientation to avoid or reduce homophobic bullying.

The survey was of 30,000 Grade 7-12 students, in 56 out of 59 provincial school districts.

Exercising in the Summer: 5 Ways to Beat the Heat

With the weather trending on the warmer side, you might find that your workouts are beginning to be a little harder to get through. In fact, anyone exercising in the heat runs the risk of experiencing heat stroke, caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Luckily, there are a few tricks to help you beat the heat so you don’t have to miss an opportunity to get your workout in.
1. Plain H20 isn’t enough
Hotter temps mean you’re going to be sweating more. Sweating more means expelling precious minerals, namely sodium and potassium. When this happens, drinking water isn’t enough. Drink a sports drink that also contains carbohydrates like Gatorade 1-2 hours before you head out the door. If it’s a shorter run, a cross-training session or a dance class, add a low-calorie electrolyte mix like Nuun or Ignite Naturals Refresh to your water.   This way you aren’t cancelling out the calories you drink with what you burn during your workout.
2. Exercise at the coolest time
It’s a no brainer that the hottest part of the day is the afternoon. If you’re going to exercise in the heat, get outside during the morning before 10 A.M. or in the evening after 6 P.M. If there’s no way to avoid a mid-day walk or jog, then try to find a shaded path or trail.  If you’re body is particularly sensitive, then just head straight to an air-conditioned gym. Exercising should be enjoyable and not stressful.  When it comes to extreme conditions, listen to your body and take the proper precautions to protect it.
3. Layer on the sunscreen.
Sunburns still energy from your body.  Make sure to thoroughly apply sunscreen before you head out the door to ensure that your muscles are doing the work, not your skin. Go the extra mile and throw on a visor or hat to protect your face.
4. Throw on some shades
Squinting and contracting the muscles of your face can actually take a lot of energy.  Wear sunglasses to prevent squinting and the distraction of having impaired vision. You’ll be more comfortable during those miles or minutes if you don’t have your face scrunched up the entire time.
5. Cool your pulse points
Your pulse points are locations where your blood vessels are close to the skin. Placing a cold compress on your neck, temples and wrists can help to cool the temperature of the blood nearest the skin, which circulates cooler blood throughout the body, lowering the body temperature.  If you’re going to be working out in the heat, chill out with a cold, wet towel around your neck and wrists before heading out the door. If you’re doing interval work, hill repeats, or an activity that provides breaks, bring a frozen bottle of water with you and splash cold water on your pulse points during your rest periods to keep your temperature from rising with the effort.

Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums and their spouses who were Sex Addicts

The American Association for Family and Marriage estimate that between 12 and 14 million Americans have a sex addiction.
Some of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch and adoptive moms have been on the other end of the addiction, married to men who claimed an insatiable appetite or obsession with sex ruined their relationships.
Most recently, Tori Spelling’s dilemma with her sex addicted husband Dean McDermott has been playing itself out on a Lifetime television reality series. Others like Tea Leoni who was married to addict David Duchovny; Katherine Zeta Jones, married to former sex-addict Michael Douglass and Angelina Jolie, whose ex Billy Bob Thornton, admitted to be an addict, have kept it out of the limelight.
Some, like Sandra Bullock, couldn’t help it but the media made her hubby Jessie James’ sex-addicted cheating ways very public and tabloid fodder. Halle Berry‘s ex husband Eric Benet was widely reported to be an addict too. Benet later retracted the claim. Similarly, Tiger Woods also claimed an addiction for the reason he cheated on his wife and even went to rehab for it.
Charlie Sheen is infamously linked to admittedly cheating on his exes including Denise Richards, partially because of a sex addiction.
Kanye West has admitted to being a sex addict and says it is was fuels his success. Wonder how Kim Kardashian, the mom of his daughter Nori, is coping.
While the condition is a legitimate ailment, it is often questioned and presumed to be an excuse for a guy who cannot or will not stay faithful.
