Back to School: 10 Tips for organizing the kids’ clothes

As you prep to send the kids back to school, you may want to reassess what’s in their closet now and consolidate uneeded clothes, give away some, fold away some for younger children and basically get organized. Here are 10 tips to help you do that from a past post:

1.Take inventory: Go through the clothes that you already have for your child and see which items fit and which items don’t. Take the items that they have out grown to a resale shop or donate them to a worthy cause.

2.Assess how your child dresses: Don’t buy a bunch of dresses if you have a tomboy who doesn’t like to wear dresses. This may seem like common sense, but for some reason people love to buy pretty dresses and then they hang in the closet with the tags on them. Or they are worn once for that special occasion and that’s it.

3.Buy separates: Instead of buying a bunch of dresses you need to buy separates so that you can mix and match tops and skirts. You can also wear the tops with jeans or other pants. A dress is one outfit, but if you buy three skirts and three tops that can be mixed and matched then you can get nine outfits out of those items.

4.Buy basic colors: When buying pants or skirts think about buying basic colors, black, blue and brown. Those will go with a lot of different things you may already own. The more combinations that you can make the better off you will be.

5.Don’t buy outfits: Stores are great about putting together outfits, like pink and green striped leggings with a matching pink and green top. This is a one trick pony. You might be able to wear the top with jeans, but otherwise you can wear the pants with that one top and that’s it. Plus it’s such a bold color choice that you don’t want to repeat it in the same week.

6.Teach them to wear things more than once: The biggest thing that they can wear more than once is pajamas. There is no need to have seven pairs of pajamas. They can get up in the morning and fold them up and put them under their pillow for the next night. Having three to four pairs of pajamas should be plenty.

7.Add leggings to an outgrown dress: Do you have some dresses that are getting too short but they fit otherwise? Just add a pair of leggings and you can still get some more mileage out of those dresses.

8.Jeans, jeans, jeans: Most of the time jeans can be worn more than once in a week so teach your child to hang or fold them up after the first wearing unless they know they got a stain on them. Jeans are very versatile and can be worn dressed up with a nice shirt or sweater or worn with a T-shirt.

9.Buy basics: Buy a sweater in white so that you can take those short-sleeved dresses into Fall and Winter. Buy a white shirt that will go with anything or under any sweater to make an outfit warmer for winter. Black pants are always a good idea because they can be worn with any shirt and can be dressed up or down depending on the circumstances.

10.Take pictures and make a fashion book: Boys are especially bad about grabbing the shirt that is on the top in their drawer and wearing it over and over. For boys you might want to hang shirts so that they can all be seen. With girls, make a fashion book. Take pictures of all of the separate pieces and then mix and match them in a fashion book to show the different outfits that can be put together. Even young children can pick out an outfit and pull the pieces out of their closet and put a matching outfit together. Accessories for girls are also great to stretch a wardrobe. A great colorful scarf can be added to a basic black or brown top and you have a completely different look that how you wore it last week. Accessories are cheap and this is a good place to allow your kids to follow the trends, but not break that bank.

Good luck!

Dear people who are tired of “bump watch” reporting…

…you have the option to;
1. Not click the link that features a bump watch story.
2. Not read the article about a bump if it strolls past as part of your social media stream.
3. Realize that just because you are not interested in seeing a topic or person covered in a certain way doesn’t mean others are not and they don’t deserve seeing that coverage.
4. Get a life.
And I say this in the nicest way possible and on behalf of bloggers and other members of the media that cover Mila’s and anybody else’s bump.

Study: Flu shot in mom when pregnant immunizes baby too later

Most doctors do not recommend flu shots to pregnant patients, yet those women are more likely to develop serious complications if they do get the flu, according to a new report.
In the review of past studies, researchers also found that pregnant women had concerns about the safety of the flu vaccine and tended to underestimate the risk that the virus posed to themselves and their fetuses.
“The research is clear that health care providers are not providing advice to pregnant women about the importance and benefits of getting vaccinated,” said Dr. Marie Tarrant, who worked on the study at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong.
“In addition, they are not making influenza vaccine available to their pregnant clients,” she said. “By their silence, they are sending a message that influenza vaccine is actually not that important.”
One study found pregnant women were five times as likely to be admitted to hospital with the flu as other women, Tarrant said.
Flu vaccines given to pregnant women immunize them and protect their infants against the flu until they are six months old, the researchers write in the journal Vaccine.

Disney beats Apple & Google to the Smart Wearables market

This week, Samsung and LG launched wearable smart watches and beat Apple to the market for delivering its anticipated iWatch.
But how about Disney World in Orlando Florida beat them all to the punch! That’s right, those staying at a hotel in the popular vacation destination resort have the option to purchase waterproof “Magic Bands” to make their visit totally digital. You can also purchase the wrist bands on site at the various parks: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom or the water parks; and use them in Downtown Disney.
With the wrist bands, wearers can seamlessly go on rides, sign up for their FastPass, buy food and merchandise and even get their photo taken while on a ride once a sensor recognizes they are wearing the wrist band.  The bands are good at the hotels, restaurants and are connected to a credit card. It could replace the need to take your keys and wallet and is in essence a digital ID.
The Magic Bands currently cost $12.95 (plus tax) and are available in seven colors and can be blinged out for extra. At check out, the  MagicBand are linked to your park tickets.
Of course, with this technology, it didn’t take neurotic privacy wonks to lament in a Time article how the wristbands are like the spying United States National Security Agency (NSA), in that they can track every move.  Sure you can get into your hotel room by just tapping your wristband at the door, but do you want that convenience of not having to be weighed down when you know Disney may be tracking your and your kids’ preferences?
Um….. There are a lot of parents and Disney lovers who will gladly turn in a little bit of privacy in exchange for a less burdened and easier time maneuvering around a sprawling campus all day.
Sign us up! ha!

Why are people giving Mila Kunis a hard time about her interviews?

“Leave Mila Alone!”
Star-Ledger reporter Stephen Whitty had some not-so-nice things to say about a recent 25 minute telephone interview he had with mom-to-be Mila Kunis while she was promoting her latest project, Third Person.
According to Whitty, Kunis assumed when he asked her in the beginning of the interview how she was feeling, he was referring to her pregnancy. The question led her to quickly shut him down, “I don’t talk about that for publication.” And it went downhill from there, he says.
The Philly Tribune summarized:

“Every question I ask over the next 25 minutes seems to strike her as either dull, insulting or burdened by some sort of agenda,” he writes.

Kunis appears less than impressed with the questions that follow – from her immigration to the United States as a child (“It’s the most mundane subject possible”) to her string of dramatic roles (“People have this misconception that comedy’s easy”). Then they touched on what made her take up acting in the first place (“There was nothing else to it. I don’t know if that’s the answer you’re fishing for.”) Ouch.

Some lay blame on the snippy interview on pregnancy hormones and another on the fact that there was another quasi-unflattering Marie Claire  interview that released that same day as the Whitty interview.
Which reminds us that the Jupiter Ascending star who is expecting her first child with fiance Ashton Kutcher did reveal to loving her new boobs in that Marie Claire piece.
“They’ve tripled in size. I was a 34A; now I’m a 36C. I’m so excited! I’m telling everyone I know, ‘Go ahead, touch them!’ Without being an asshole, I have to say, I love being pregnant,” she mused.
About the type of children she wanted to raise, she said, “I just don’t want my kids to be assholes. I feel like so many kids nowadays are. Both of us just want to have well-behaved, honest, nice children who people meet and say, ‘That’s a good kid.'”
Perfect answers if you ask us!

PRESS PLAY!!

 Again, Leave Mila ALONE! ha!
