Serena Williams’ Iconic Anne Leibovitz Demi Moore Do-Over. Meh.

img_7848

I’m not jealous that the same media conglomerate that owns Reddit, (Conde Naste) owns Vanity Fair and the latter got an exclusive feature on Serena Williams and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian‘s love story.

I’m not annoyed that the author, Buzz Bissinger, goes a little bit overboard to ram it down our throats that the article is a “love story.” I think he mentioned the phrase “love story” like 50 times!

I’m not peeved that the wonderfully talented and famed photographer Anne Lebowitz was bestowed the honor of doing Williams’ maternity shoot even as we were pumping up our pick in another post.

I am not even fermuxed that the author tried to pump up Columbia, Maryland, where Alexis was raised as some famous planned community when as a native Marylander, I know it’s not that big a deal but hey, we gotta hype him up too.

I am not miffed that the magazine chose to have her do yet another take of Demi Moore’s iconic cover because, by this point, it has been overdone to the point that it is a cliche and I think Serena deserves more, more authenticity and more uniqueness and something more fitting.

ok. I lied. Maybe I am all those things. Jealous. Annoyed. Peeved. Fermuxed. Miffed.

Well, you don’t have to let my grudge stop you from heading over to Vanity Fair and checking out.

You will learn that the Tennis champ took a pregnancy test to prove a friend wrong and that her vomiting, fatigue and swollen breast meant nothing. Nothing at all.

img_7850

You’ll discover that Williams took several more after and eventually, presented them all in a brown bag to Ohanian a day before the start of the Australian Open (which she won) and you’ll see Ohanian described as a science geek, an Ivy League Law school dropout, who didn’t watch one tennis match before dating Williams.

You’ll get the context of my fave part:

The day of his birthday, April 24, Alexis went to the Carousel Restaurant in Little Armenia in Los Angeles with his grandparents. Serena and he FaceTimed. She was calling to say happy birthday, which might not sound like a big deal but was because she is a Jehovah’s Witness and part of the religion is not to celebrate birthdays. She was doing something she normally would not do, reaching beyond, telling him on the phone how wonderful their lives together had been.

Alexis knew then he wanted to marry her, not simply out of happiness or compatibility. She was helping him become the best version of himself because of her own work ethic and focus, with millions watching and the expectation of the public that she should win every time, what Serena herself described as carrying “three pyramids” on her shoulder. He thought he worked hard—it is part of the romance of high tech that everyone works 18 hours a day and then curls up under the desk for a few hours’ sleep with their laptop as teddy bear and pacifier—but he realized it was nothing compared with Serena.

“I felt like a door had been opened to a person who made me want to be my best self. . . . I find myself just wanting to be better by simply being around her because of the standard she holds.”

If you’re a fan of Williams or unlikely pairings or love stories, you might very well enjoy the treatment and I think for sure, you will love all the great tales and stories within.

I do appreciate all the insights from the piece even if I got issues on a bunch of other aspects of it.

It is a great read and I highly recommend it!

After Extended Hospital Stay to Cure Jaundice, Beyonce’s Twins Go Home to Malibu

Beyonce’s twins, reportedly named Shawn and Bea (or not), have been moved home to a $400,000 a month rental home in Malibu, California, a source close to E! News reports.

The babies had an extended stay in the hospital because they were born slightly early and had a condition called “jaundice” requiring them to spend time under photolight theraphy, according to sources close to the couple, TMZ reports.

Jaundice occurs because your baby’s body has more bilirubin than it can get rid of. Bilirubin is a yellow substance that’s made when the body breaks down old red blood cells. It leaves the body through urine and stool. When you’re pregnant, your body removes bilirubin from your baby through the placenta.

Phototherapy is the most common treatment for reducing high bilirubin levels that cause jaundice in anewborn. In the standard form of phototherapy, your baby lies in a bassinet or enclosed plastic crib (incubator) and is exposed to a type of fluorescent light that is absorbed by your baby’s skin.

The Daily Mail first reported about the mansion, and claimed the family, which includes hubby Jay Z and big sis Blue Ivy, will stay there for the remainder of the summer.

The property, which features 6.3 acre grounds, features a rose garden, tennis court, pool house and viewing deck. The property, which is referred to as La Villa Contenta, is currently on the market for $54.5 million. According to The Daily Mail, Tina Knowles Lawson was spotted visiting the compound on Sunday.

Nice!

Olympic Athlete Alysia Montano Competes Again Thru Pregnancy

alysia

Championship middle distance runner Alysia Montano isn’t letting pregnancy get in the way of her drive to compete.

The athlete ran in the 800 meter distance race at the US Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento this past weekend whilst 5-months pregnant.

The Olympic athlete said she was inspired after watching Wonder Woman.

“When I found out Gal Gadot filmed half the movie five-months pregnant, I said, ‘I for sure am signing up for USA nationals‘,” she said.

Physicians recommend that pregnant women continue with their regular workout regimens if they feel comfortable doing so, and if they keep their heart rate at a certain level.

Montano has been getting a lot of attention again. She recently celebrated her decision on her Instagram with photos of her journey.

alysiamontano

“My mission as a mother, as a daughter, as a sister, as a friend, and as a human is to always fight for good and the empowerment of others.” she captioned the photo. “I hope that one day my children can look at the world through a lens filled with kindness, compassion, hope, empowerment and purpose. I hope when my children think of me in their pursuits they might see me as an example of strength and not only think “Strong like Mom”, but perhaps they may see their abilities and think “Stronger THAN Mom”. #motivationmonday#LetsDoThisForTheseBabies

But this is not the first time Montano has competed while pregnant so this is not a big stretch for her.

In 2014, Montana shocked, awed and inspired many when she competed then while 8 months pregnant.  She ended up finishing just 35 seconds shy of her personal record while 34 weeks pregnant with her first child.

Everyone in the stand rose to their feet watching her compete.

“This is what it looks like to be a professional athlete as a woman and still continuing on in your career (while starting a family),” she said at the time.”I wanted to celebrate where I’m at, celebrate: oh my gosh, I made it 34 weeks and I’ve been able to stay fit and healthy and have an uncomplicated pregnancy.”

She recalls all the accolades.

“(In 2014) women let me know that my journey and my story had inspired them in so many different ways,” the 31-year-old was quoted as saying.

“I think there’s something about coming out to any venue, not really expecting to win, but just going along with the journey and seeing what comes out of it. And that’s the most beautiful part for me, being a track and field athlete, the platform that I have, I feel so responsible to be a representative of people who don’t have the same platform, don’t have the same voice that I do.”

Every few years, it looks like our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Jessica Simpson  cute catches heat for sharing an Instagram pic of her little 5-year old daughter Maxwell Johnson with husband NFL quarterback Eric Johnson has in a bikini.

The singer-actress was accused of objectifying her daughter when she was a baby and again recently.

We are of the opinion that while there are pervs on the Internet that sadly and disgustingly objectify little girls, it’s too bad that people are so quick to sexualize children.

The bathing suits and bikinis that designers are making for little kids are so cute and quite stylish, even more some than some styles made for adults.

We saw some super cute ones recently released by our partners at Bikini.com.

If you have a rock star budget and a little girl too, you’re in luck!

Bikini.com is offering our readers 10% off with the code CM-BD10-JGHA.

We love their reversible styles! Check out our fave styles and head over to and other looks like these:

2017 BET Awards Trends: 90s Comebacks, Africa, Platinum Blonde and Babies

collage-picmonkey-s-photo-editor-free-online-image-editing

The 2017 BET Awards went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. I confess that I only got a chance to catch the end as I was heading to the beach to celebrate my eldest kid’s birthday and didn’t settle in to our suite until the show was well into its fourth and final hour! But I must say, that I thorougly enjoyed the singing chops of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Tamar Braxton who did an excellent job performing her new song, “My Man” on stage.

Tameka Tiny Cottles Harris, LaTocha and Tamika Scott and Kandi Burruss of 1990s girl group Xscape reuniting soon for a tour

Sadly, I missed a couple of our other bumpwatch alums, Kandi Buruss and Tameka “Tiny” Harris perform with their 1990s R&B girl group, Xscape

img_7715

The duo joined fellow members LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott in a medley of their hits on stage since breaking up as a group 18 years ago. It was the first of two explosive 90s R&B performances. The New Edition tribute and performances later blew me away!

img_7722

Xscape will document their work as they prepare to perform at the 2017 Essence Festival. The docuseries, titled Xscape: Still Kickin’ It, premieres this fall on Bravo.

WATCH:

I noticed some fashion and hair trends beginning with the blunt platinum bob LaTocha Scott and Braxton wore. Singer-Actress Kat Graham who plays Jada Pinkett-Smith in the new movie All Eyez on Me, rapper and star of Love & Hip Hop: New York Cardi B and our other bumpwatch alum Blac Chyna  all did the blunt blonde bob.

298cc6df-2d6a-4bd4-9225-c379d952ef71

And platinum blonde, in general,  had a big showing  on Tiny’s daughter Zonnique, who is also a recording-artist. She wore her hair in that shade as did Lateysha Grace, a German transplant who has been on three seasons of MTV show The Valleys.

Clockwise: Lateysha Grace, Zonnique, Cardi B and Blac Chyna in platinum blonde hair.

It was also cool to see so many parents bring their children to the show. DJ Khaled actually brought his son Asahad on stage with him during his performance. It reminded me of all the NBA babies at their dads’ games.

70180aa0-6f2d-4e4e-b0ec-b645c2dc0726

Jamie Foxx had his daughter Annalise help him present on stage and Future got his daughter Londyn a matching bedazzled mask to wear in honor of his popular new single “Mask Off” which he later performed that night with a cameo from Kenderick Lamar. Another big winner was Chance the Rapper whose mom accompanied him to the show.

Speaking of Winners. Beyonce was a BIG winner taking home the most awards for Best Female R&B Performer, Viewers’ Choice, Video of the Year for her song “Sorry” (which tied with Bruno Mars) and is off her album Lemonade, which one for Album of the Year.  The director for “Sorry” won the for Best Director.

Her sister Solange  took home the Centric Award for her song “Cranes in the Sky” which also earned the star her first Grammy award earlier in the year.  Besides Solange, we spotted a few of our other Bumpwatch alums at the event including Keyshia Cole.

The 3 Carseat Installation Must-Do Before Baby Arrives

baby in car with dreams in window

If you’re anything like many of today’s expectant mothers, the last few months of pregnancy are spent “nesting” — or the overwhelming desire to get your home ready before your new bundle of joy arrives home. As such, you’ve probably tackled everything from setting up the crib to safeguarding each and every electrical outlet — and your hospital bag has been packed for weeks.

But the last thing on your list — and arguably the most important — should be making sure your car is ready on a moment’s notice to head to the hospital. After all, before arriving home for the first time, it will be the first place outside the hospital where your baby will be transported and rest comfortably.

Trust me — you’ll want to make sure everything is in order, so you can buckle your precious cargo into the car seat, without having to worry about engine performance and tire tread. Here are three steps to make sure your new baby is safe, comfortable and happy on that first — and each subsequent — ride in your car.

1. Have Your Car Serviced

The first way to ensure your baby remains safe is to get your vehicle serviced and ensure it’s in perfect running order. Your best options include taking your car to a trusted mechanic or your dealership to get a full tune-up.

While ensuring the motor and battery are in tip-top condition, one other area to pay particular attention to is your tires. If the tread is low or the tires have signs of dry rot, you should replace them with a trusted brand like Falken, available on reputable websites like TireBuyer.com.

Now, if you find yourself apprehensive about buying tires online, you can rest assured knowing they will be shipped directly to your mechanic or dealership for proper installation.

2. Purchase and Install a Car Seat

The car seat is the most important piece of safety equipment you can buy for your child. For a newborn, you’ll need an appropriately-sized infant car seat. One surefire, trusted option includes checking out the website for Consumer Reports for up-to-date recommendations on top brands and models.

Of course, it doesn’t matter how great your car seat is if it isn’t installed properly. Case in point: A 2011 study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that almost half of all car seats are installed or used incorrectly.

For tips and instructions on proper car seat installation and usage, consult websites like TheCarSeatLady.com. If you’re still unsure, schedule an in-person appointment with a trusted expert.

3. Stock Up on Accessories

There are a number of car accessories that will make car rides more enjoyable for you and your little one. Some of these top accessories include:

  • Mirrors. Your baby will be seatbelted into a rear-facing car seat for at least two years, which means you won’t be able to see their cute, little face unless you buy a small mirror from a company like Cozy Greens and 4U2C to attach to the backseat headrest. Plus, as your bundle of joy gets older, the mirror will also act as a source of entertainment; after all, babies love seeing their own reflections.
  • Sunshades. You’ll also want to protect your infant from the heat and harmful sun exposure with a window shade for their side of the car. Sunshades, like those sold by Munchkin and EZ-Bugz, come in two basic forms: static shades that stick to the window or retractable shades that can be pulled down while in use.
  • Seat Protectors. Your car will take a lot of abuse from both the car seat and your child over the years. However, purchasing a secure seat protector from a retailer like Brica, Munckin and Summer Infant will help save your backseat from any car seat pressure points — and from the many, many spills in your infant’s future.

This is Why You Crave Eating Dirt While Pregnant

img_7534

The desire to eat dirt during your pregnancy is by no means strange, even if it makes you feel like you’ve finally hit maximum pregnancy brain. In fact, the craving to eat dirt (this craving is commonly referred to as pica), specifically geophagy (literally “earth eating” in Latin), is seen all over the world, in every community you can think of, according to Archivos Latinoamericanos de Nutricion. From women living and working in the African plains to a soccer mom in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, craving dirt during pregnancy isn’t new.

It’s so common in some parts of the world, that there are areas that sell clay-rich dirt at health foods and exotic goods stores, according to Science Daily, even if the current recommendation is to definitely not eat the clay. However, the recommendation by the researchers noted in the Science Daily article made this decree for a reason that might surprise you. You may be thinking “because it’s dirt, and you shouldn’t eat dirt,” but that’s not all of it.

This Mom’s Hilarious Breakdown of the Typical Swim Meet is Perfectly True!

img_7488

Blogger and Public Health professor and author Julianna Miner from Rants from Mommyland penned a hilarious blog post she recently republished on TODAY about what happens at your average swim meet.

As a “swim mom” who, like Miner, also has three kids who swim on a team each summer, I can totally relate to her well-written hilarious blog post.

With permission, Miner’s fun take is reposted below for the edification of all those who want a good chuckle at what we go through.

And if you’re a swim mom (or dad), I’m sure you’ll relate as well!  Enjoy!

I have three kids and they all swim on a swim team every summer. I decided to capture my experience at a morning swim meet, for those of you not in the water cult.

img_7487

6:00am: Wake up, drink coffee. Wake up grouchy children.

6:45am: Arrive at the pool. Parking lot is already full. Let the kids out and park far away. Carry/drag chairs, bags and a cooler as if I were large pack animal. It occurs to me suddenly that as mother of three there is no denying that I am a large pack animal.

6:58am: Small miracle occurs. I find a great place to set up chairs, etc. Next to friends. With a good view of the pool. In full shade. Wish I’d brought a sweatshirt actually, is kind of chilly.

7:00 am: Kids jump into the freezing cold pool for warm ups and exchange looks with each other like – WHY DO WE DO THIS AGAIN?

7:30am: Children begin harassing me for money for the snack bar. I try to hand them something healthy from the cooler. Suddenly every other kid at the swim meet is eating large, chocolate-frosted donuts.

8:00am: A 10th grader is now singing the National Anthem. She is really good. Why do I get slightly (and embarrassingly) choked up by this, yet again? And why is it a surprise every time when it does? I am dumb.

8:05am: Child #1 swims and makes it across the pool without a near-fatal drowning accident occurring. Success!

8:25am: Children 2 & 3 have raced and I screamed my head off to KICK! KICK! KICK! even though I know perfectly well that they can’t hear me underwater and so it’s pointless. I don’t want to yell KICK! KICK! KICK! But it just comes out.

8:30am: Give in and take kids to the snack bar for donuts (as I am out of coffee anyway).

8:55am: Child #2 runs over to me, dripping wet and beaming. “Did you see that, Mommy?! Did you see that?!” I blink twice and answer: “Yes! That was awesome! Here have a dollar! Go get another donut!” The moms sitting next to me giggle.

9:00am: Still cursing myself for participating in a sport where if you get distracted for literally 30 seconds you miss the whole thing.

9:20am: Child #3 swims her best time ever and is so happy she can’t stand it. It might be the best feeling in the world.

9:40am: Feel momentary surge of guilt for not volunteering today. Then remember that husband is traveling and I’m on my own with the kiddos. And also how I stayed until 10:30pm to move chairs around on the pool deck and take out trash at the night meet last week.

10:05am: At some point, the kids drag the cooler of healthy snacks over to the picnic area. I go to retrieve it and observe that all of the food in it appears to have been consumed by wolves.

10:15am: Get to see lots of familiar faces and families from last year, which is great. Why do all these kids keep growing so much? Dear GOD – that one has a mustache. Last year he was playing with Pokemon.

10:20: Child #2 has apparently forgotten how to do the backstroke and gets disqualified. He is devastated for five minutes and then says: “I’m hungry! Can I have a donut?”

10:30am: A kid is swimming breaststroke for the first time. He is tiny and can barely make it across the pool. All the other swimmers in the race have finished and are hanging onto the wall, watching him. He looks around and sees he’s dead last. He starts to sag in the water. Parents who don’t even know the kid begin to cheer their hearts out. KICK! KICK! KICK! Teenage coaches from the other team start clapping for him and running up and down the side of the pool. He touches the wall and the whole place goes nuts for him. The swimmers in the lanes on either side of him shake his hand and pat him on the back.

10:40am: Still thinking about how happy I am for participating in a sport where a kid who comes in last still walks away feeling awesome.

10:45am: My chair is now in full sun and it’s hot as balls.

10:49am: The timers are switching to the other side of the pool and “Gagnam Style” starts to play over the speakers. A horde of small children start to boogie down. Some of them know all the moves and it quickly becomes a dance battle for the ages.

10:55am: Child #3 swims her hardest and gets crushed by the kids who train all winter. She’s still smiling because she beat her best time.

10:59am: Child #2 wanders over and says: “I’M HUNGRY”.

11:05am: Misplace my youngest child, age 5. Find her sitting with John Ross, a 15 year old boy she adores, who is very patiently discussing Spiderman with her. I ask her to come back to our chairs. She glares at me and says: “WE ARE TALKING. ABOUT SPIDERMAN.”

11:30am: The crowd has thinned and the meet is winding down. Watching the teenagers swim Butterfly now. It’s kind of beautiful. I make a comment about this to my kids, in the hopes that they’ll watch and really observe how it’s done when it’s done well. The big kids glance at the race for a second then go back to playing Uno in a towel fort with their friends. The little one is asleep in a lounge chair with a ring pop dangling off one finger.

Noon: Arrive home. Face sunburned to a bright red. Want to collapse into the dark, air conditioned living room and not move ever again.

12:05pm: Child #3 wanders into the living room and says: “I’m bored. Can we go to the pool?”
