Surrogate pregnancy ban in Kansas proposed

A Kansas lawmaker will introduce a bill that would ban surrogate pregnancy in that state.

Sen. Mary Pilcher-Cook, a Shawnee Republican who leads the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, said her bill would be similar to the ban on surrogate pregnancy in the  District of Columbia.
“Currently in Kansas, there are no laws regarding surrogacy,” she told The Topeka Capitol-Journal. “I’d like the committee to take a look at that.”
DC forbids Surrogte contracts and imposes prison sentences and fines for those who try to circumvent the laws.

New Book: Celebrities having babies in 40s fool average women on pregnancy odds

Don’t let all these celebrities having babies in their 40s fool you into thinking you’ll be able to easily get pregnant.
That is the message author Tanya Selvaratham relays in her new book “The Big Lie: Motherhood, Feminism and the Reality of the Biological Clock”
In a recent CNN review of her book, Selvaratham says older celeb moms like Halle Berry, Tina Fey, Nia Long, Julianne Moore, Kelly Preston,  Uma Thurman  and others have average women thinking having babies in their mid to late 40s may be easy.
“We see celebrities having kids seemingly without any problems and we have no idea what they went through,” Selvaratham says. “We see the end result, but not the struggle.”
Forty may be the new 30, but our ovaries have not gotten the same makeover, CNN notes. Even with all the advances in reproductive technology, our eggs have a finite shelf life and the odds of having a child over 40 years old are shockingly slim.
Yet, because of women delaying the start of their families and other reasons, there are more childless women in the US than in year’s past. In 1976, one in 10 woman between ages 40 and 44 was childless. By 2006, that numbered doubled to one in 5, according to the U.S. Census.
The book may also have been driven by the author’s own fertility struggles which took a toll on her marriage.
It seems Selvaratham’s doctor may be part to blame for her troubles. After suffering her first miscarriage at 37, Selvaratham’s doc told her she still had time to conceive, influencing her decision to delay trying again until later. She learned later the delay in time probably made it harder.
According to the Southern California Center for Reproductive Medicine, a woman in her 20s has a 20-25% chance of conceiving naturally per menstrual cycle. In her early 30s, the chance of pregnancy is 15% per cycle. After 35, the odds of pregnancy without medical intervention are at 10%. After 40, that number falls to 5%, and women over 45 have a 1% chance of conception.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for the Expectant Mom

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, this is the perfect opportunity to show the mom to be in your life some love! Just a kind card or letter to let them know you are thinking about them is great, but a personalized gift is a great way to support a lady who may be experiencing lots of aches and pains.
One gift idea that’s great for any mom to be is a relaxation basket. Simply purchase a good size basket and then fill it with all her favorite goodies. Perhaps fill it with her favorite bubble bath, sweet smelling lotion and super soft socks. Pick out a new book or a favorite magazine and her favorite candy treat to place in as well. If she is not much of a reader, choose a DVD and maybe some popcorn and a soda.
If a gift certificate is in your budget, you might include a spa day. Many spas offer maternity massages and this is a great gift for an expecting mother over fifteen weeks.

If a gift certificate is not in the budget, opt for making your own coupon book filled with free foot massages or a “duty free” night so she can relax in her own tub while you pick up the slack.

The key to any of these gifts is personalization. Choose items that you know she enjoys and that will help her to relax and enjoy the holiday.
Another sweet idea is to give a gift to the mom from the new baby. Maybe include a sonogram picture on a card and include the caption “You are “heads down” the best Mommy around” Love, Baby’s name. Maybe include a small basket of goodies that are from the baby such as some snacks she has been craving since being pregnant or a children’s book about a mommy and baby with a personal inscription on the inside.
Whatever gifts you decide on, this mom to be is sure to feel the love and enjoy her Valentine’s Day!

Kerry Washington’s prolific response to street harassment that forced her to suppress her pretty

Emmy-nominated mom-to-be Kerry Washington opened up to Pat Mitchell, President and CEO of The Paley Center for Media about first meeting Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes, her life and work, during a recent episode of the Center’s interview series.

During the 30+ minute exchange before a live theater audience, the Scandal star also shared some insight into her humble upbringing. She acknowledged that growing up in an urban city,  she purposefully avoided wearing skirts and dressing girly because of a fear of street harassment.
She added that unlike now when there are plenty role models of women who are smart & beautiful, she grew up without having such figures. You could either be smart or pretty. She didn’t think you could be both. Today, Washington is an advocate for girls and sits on the board of several civic organizations & is a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts & Humanities.
The Golden Globe nominee also reflected on how her mom tried to sway her from aspiring to be an actress.
The fashion icon said being fashionable isn’t accidental.
When Washington started taking acting seriously, the former “wallflower” said like a true “daughter of a professor” she studied fashion & all the designers & labels.
Washington, who is expecting a child with her husband NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha ended the interview session by reciting an empowering monologue  “My Short Skirt” from The Vagina Monologues which spoke to the street harassers of her past & society’s message to girls.

Megan Fox covers Cosmopolitan Argentina

Mom-to-be Megan Fox is on the cover of this month’s Cosmopolitan Argentina.
Although Fox is close to delivering her second child with husband Brian Austin Green, she is possibly in her early stages when she shot the photos because there is no evidence of a bump.
In the article, (written in Spanish, of course), she talks about preferring casual clothes to glamorous and trendy wear, especially now that she is a mom.
Fox and Green married in 2010 and welcomed son Noah Shannon Green on September 2012.
The Transformers actress disclosed that the only thing she has planned for 2014 (besides promoting the Avon Instinct cologne, for which she is spokesperson and one other film) is having her baby!
Well then!  Good! Congrats mama!

Trend: Gender-Neutral Baby Names – Which Name Tops List?

Jordan, Riley and Avery are the most popular unisex names for both boys and girls, according to data compiled by leading online business directory WhitePages.com
“We are seeing celebrities jumping on this trend. In the past year, Kristen Bell named her daughter Lincoln, Kim Kardashian chose North and Lisa Ling went with Jett, all selecting unisex names for their girls,” said Liz Powell, culture and trend Expert from WhitePages. “What’s interesting is that as unisex names grow, there are some names that seem to trend at almost an even split between males and females, including Riley, Peyton and Rowan. We expect to see this trend grow into 2014.”
This comports with Bellyitch’s own assessment last summer of the trend of celebrities giving their daughters masculine or gender neutral names.
