BumpWatch: Dominique Dawes promotes Kaiser Permanente’s Prenatal Care campaign (VIDEO)

In September, retired US Gymnastics and Olympic medalist, Dominique Dawes gave her followers a clue into the fact that she was pregnant when she tweeted herself filming a video for Kaiser Permanente.

Not everyone got it and only one of her followers responded to the image with a “hmmm.”

Dawes, who is the only modern American gymnast to compete and medal in three Olympic games (1992, 1996, 2000), has been the health organization’s Health Advocate and official spokeswoman for several years now, but when she began to show, she started to help promote its prenatal care program among patients and in communities.
Twitter
But in that September photo, she was much smaller than when she first openly shared news of her first pregnancy this past December in a photo (below) which also shows the petite Maryland-native wearing a wedding and engagement ring.
The motivational speaker is quite secretive about her private life so no one had a clue she was even married, let alone expecting!
Dawes, who was a member of the  US Gymnastics Olympic Overall Gold medalist team at the Atlanta 1996 games, posted a video from the campaign on her Twitter account recently.
“Prenatal health is the first step to being a good mom!”  the alumnus of University of Maryland (my alma mater)  wrote.

Study: Taking antidepressants during pregnancy risks baby’s lungs

Taking certain antidepressants in late pregnancy more than doubles the odds of a lung complication in newborns, a new review says.
Fortunately, the study also found that the absolute risk of the complication — known as persistent pulmonary hypertension — was still low, affecting about 3.5 out of every 1,000 births, according to study author Dr. Sophie Grigoriadis.
“Women taking these medications in pregnancy should not panic. The risk is still quite low. It should be one of the factors you consider when you decide to use medications, but it has to be balanced with the potential problems that can occur if you don’t treat depression,” said Grigoriadis, head of the Women’s Mood and Anxiety Clinic: Reproductive Transitions at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, in Toronto.
Deciding how to treat depression during pregnancy can be difficult, the study noted. The benefits of antidepressants have to be weighed against potential harms, and compared to the potential risks of untreated depression.
Untreated depression in a pregnant woman can lead to unhealthy eating habits, poor weight gain, high blood pressure, inadequate prenatal care and possible drug and alcohol abuse, according to the March of Dimes.

Top 10 Things you should NOT say to a woman after revealing the name she’s picked for her baby

No matter what names you and/or your partner have narrowed down to possibly name your child, at some point you will inevitably be greeted with a frown, shriveled brow, upturn lip and nose possibly followed by the following words: “you’re going to name him/her that?”
Save yourself the heartache, stress and need to “read” someone the riot act about how you don’t care if s/he like the name you’ve chosen because after all it is YOUR CHILD and not theirs…DON’T EVEN BOTHER SHARING IT.
If someone considers it rude that you politely say, “we’ve narrowed it down, but have decided not to share until we make up our mind.”
Once the baby is here and you announce his/her name, at that point it is too late for the Peanut Gallery to offer any unsolicited advice.
Most people are ashamed to utter the words, “You should’ve called him/her ______” because at that point the interloper should just be mesmerized by a beautiful bundle of joy snuggled in your arms and not be concerned with whether the baby will be teased for his/her name, if the initials are all wrong, or that it doesn’t look good on a resume and the child won’t get a job.

Good people of the world, we know your intentions are good, but a simple smile and nod is more than an adequate response even if you don’t like the name. But of course if you do, please speak up and say so!

Cheers!
And alas, Here are the TOP 10 Things NOT TO SAY TO SOMEONE AFTER S/HE TELLS YOU WHAT S/HE PLANS TO NAME HER UNBORN CHILD:
10. You’re going to name him that? This passive aggressive retort is just plain rude.
9. Why didn’t you select a name that means something? You mean the fact that I took my time to come up with the name isn’t meaningful enough?
8. You know she’s not going to get a job if an employer sees that name on a resume? I guess that is the risk s/he’s going to have to take 15 years from now. Who knows maybe people will realize that bizarre names like oh..Obama and Oprah and Barack can do a decent job. I was at an event yesterday and this woman named “Singleton” was getting an award for being the best executive VP in some company. Now if a woman with that name can get somewhere…I say employers are starting to look past the uncommon names. Ha. I jest.
7. You should’ve named him after your mom/dad? Um I don’t think people are naming their kids Agnes, Merle, Herbert and Dottie any more, but thanks for your suggestion
6. Did you consider a Biblical Name? One shouldn’t assume that the parents would feel comfortable picking a name after the bible if they don’t even go to church regularly, or are oh I don’t know…Buddhists!
5. You want her to be Teased at school naming her that? Why do we assume the worst in children? We use our adult brains to find the meanest taunt that the nastiest child could use hypothetically use to tease another child, failing to realize children are not as mean as we remember and there are loads more different names floating around schools these days than before. Children may just be used to the “off the beaten path” names being heard on the play grounds.
4. Those initials when strung together spell ____. Good thing these days, most people don’t really do monogrammed towels or cuff links for our children for that to be a problem. I don’t recall how many occasions people are judged by what the initials of their names spell out.
3. How do your parents feel about that name? Again, since this is not THEIR child, people don’t really take that much stock in whether their parents approve or not, unless there are some deep rooted, unearthed approval issues and at that point, do you really want to trigger those skeletons?
2. How long did it take to come up with that? Why ask? Was it a competition? Do people get a prize for taking months to whittle down a name. I really don’t get that question at all.
1. Boy is that an Ugly name. No explanation needed.

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer launches series asking “Will You Walk?” (VIDEO)

The Avon Foundation has kicked off its 12th season of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series with an animated video asking people “Will you walk? Or will you walk away?”
This year’s walk will take place in 8 cities across the US:  Houston (April 12-13); Washington (May 3-4); Boston (May 17-18); Chicago (May 31-June 1); San Francisco (July 12-13); Santa Barbara, Calif. (September 6-7); New York (October 18-19); and Charlotte, N.C. (October 25-26).
“Every year thousands of heroes dressed in pink fueled by a passion to end breast cancer come together at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer events to raise life-saving funds for breast cancer research and access to care,” Avon Foundation for Women President Carol Kurzig said in a press release. “With our new video launching the 2014 Avon Walk season, we are showing how each and every one of our participants is making a difference in the lives of those with a breast cancer diagnosis.”
Last year, 15,000 people participated and raised close to $40 million from over 376,000 donations. The donations raised go to fund grants, leading cancer centers, research institutions and community-based organizations in the target regions. Over 2,000 breast cancer survivors also participated in the Avon Walks in 2013.
Over 3 million mammograms in the United States have been funded from the efforts of the over 192,000 participants who have collectively walked 6.25 million miles through city streets since it started in 2003.
The Avon Walk series runs from April through October. Each walker must raise $1,800 in donations and train for the event. For more information about signing up, check out http://www.avonwalk.org/about/register-to-walk.html or call 888-541-WALK.

Read Twitter Battle that caused Tamera Mowry-Housley to cry on Oprah & how hubby Adam defended his woman

This past Friday, January 10, Tia Mowry Hardrict and twin sis Tamera Mowry-Housley appeared before Oprah Winfrey on her popular OWN TV show Where Are They Now?”.   The show revisits and catches up with beloved pop culture stars of previous generations.
During the session, Tamera broke down while discussing racism she encountered in social media over her decision to marry a white man. Although the sisters have a white dad and a black mom, they identify black and are generally perceived by audiences as black women.
We thought we’d share for those who may be wondering, an excerpt of the recap from our October 2012 posting which had a summary of one such Twitter battle which was the cause of much pain to Tamera.
In this summary, you’ll see her husband Adam Housley come to Tamera’s defense against Twitter bullies.
It happened the night of the Vice Presidential televised debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican candidate Rep. Paul Ryan. Here it is:
Tamera Mowry-Housley retweeted Fox News host Greta Van Susteren’s Tweet about Vice President Joe Biden’s constant interruption of Republican VP Candidate Paul Ryan during the VP debate. ” I think i might turn this off if it were not my job to watch it…the interruptions make it impossible to learn anything.”
About 1900 people retweeted it, but because Tamera is Black (bi-racial), and her husband, Adam Housley is White, and he works for the very conservative and right-leaning Fox News that was enough for people to assail Tamera with an avalanche of mean, hateful, nasty and misogynistic tweets.
Even though Tamera did not say she was a Republican and say who she was voting for, simply retweeting Greta was enough to send the Twitter Bullies swinging!
via Twitchy

In reply, Tamera tweeted then later deleted:

Some came to her rescue…

via Twitchy

And then Adam went back and forth with a few …

Finally, fed up, Adam went IN….

After that, most of the “@” Tweets stopped and the two started to get more supportive tweets.
Phew! Live and let live people!
Sadly, I can relate.  As a Center Right Independent person who writes about politics for national audiences and have criticized the president in my writing on occasion (even though I am critical of Mitt Romney much too), I have had several hate letters, emails and Twitter attacks calling me all sorts of names from C*nt, to Uncle Tom etc etc.

At one point, I used to get one a month.  It stings at first, but I’ve learned that when you put yourself and your opinions out there for wide consumption by a large group of people and are perceived to be in a position of influence because of that wide reach, you will ultimately reach large swaths of folks who will not agree.

Some of those people are simple, narrow-minded, bigoted, racist, and have linear and limited experience that prohibits them from accepting others and not showing disdain for anyone they disagree with…and from behind the comfort of their computer screens, anyone can say smack “@” you that they wouldn’t DARE say to your face.

Got to shake it off and keep it popping!
Looks like Tamera did last night, sent out a bible scripture and has moved on…

Twitter-Jenny McCarthy
R&B Pop princess Ciara confirmed on ABC’s The View what we and many others have suspected: she is pregnant with her first child with her fiance Hip Hop artist Future

The Body Party singer and Future got engaged last October. The Atlanta-based recording artist proposed to the Ciara during a special birthday dinner for the 28-year-old pop star. Future has three kids from previous relationships.
