Decision2016: 50 NonPartisan Ways To Teach Your Children about Civics

voting-booth1

The US presidential election is heating up and I must say it is quite a bizarre spectacle but I want to reaming non-partisan in this space so I’ll just repost a fave post I put a while back of 50 ways that parents and inspire their children to be more civic-minded and become more aware of democracy.

Beyond taking a child in with you to the ballot box, here are 50 other ways to teach children about the importance and value of having their voice heard:

1. Take children to the polls with you. Actually schlepping the kids down to the voting booth is a real way to show them the value and importance of voting. Have them vote on what to eat for dinner.

2. Let your child wear your “I voted” sticker to school the next day.

3. Organize a family field trip to the State House or the mayor’s office

4. Let the little ones decide what outfit to wear one day.

5. Get out a globe, give it a spin, then look up a random place on it online or at the library

6. Check out a civics book from the library and go through it with your middle school kid

7. Turn on CNNor MSNBC or FOX (depending on your political bent) and let them watch poll results come in, at least briefly.

8. Involve them in your civic activity or volunteer effort, find a way to include your children. It helps them realize their role in society

9. Show them images of your local candidates from one of the many mailers they send

10. Talk to them about Women Suffrage or the Civil Rights Era and other groups battle to get the right to vote

11. Do some online or library research and talk to them about other forms of government in other nations.

12. Find and download a mobile or iPad app that does a great job at teaching civics and democracy

13. Nurture your budding leader. Whenever there is an opportunity for your child who may have shown to you s/he is a budding leader, encourage him or her to run for office, on the very local local level. Your kid would appreciate that the same type of work it takes to get classmates to vote for him/her as a candidate is a micro-version of what goes on in elections for higher offices.

14. Get a trivia board game or cards that includes a section about government and politics and play it with them

15. Visit historical landmarks.

16. Help them register to vote when they turn 18 years old.

17. Teach by example and let them know you are going to research issues and candidates before you vote so they can learn not to rely on others but to do the work to learn more on their own.

18. Take them to a homeless shelter so they can learn that their actions make a difference

19. Order pizza and count the toppings and determine which toppings has the most and use t hat example to teach about voting.

20. Let them volunteer. If there is a civic issue that impacts your community, talk to your child about it and about different ways to help. If you realize your child is inclined to or is interested, encourage him to lead an effort to hold a canned food drive or some other fundraising effort for the cause. It’s a great way to stoke an early interest in being a leader.

21. Let them watch the old School House Rock shorts from the 70s and 80s that teach about how a Bill becomes a law

22. Take them to a School Board meeting so they can see the importance of getting involved with those who make decisions about the schools.

23. Let them pick a topic that matters to them and encourage them to write a letter to the editor of the local paper about that issue.

24. Talk about age-appropriate issues that are in the newspaper each day.

25. Encourage them to write their local representative

26. Design a Civics Jeopardy! Game or find one online to play with them.

27. Look up info about and plan a trip to visit the oldest landmark in your town.

28. Find a charity that you and your family care about and volunteer at an event it plans to teach kids about awareness and responsibility to others.

29. Help them draft up rules for play, chores and civility in the home. Post them up on a posterboard in the kitchen so all can see.

30. Buy or make puzzles of the United States and play with them so they learn about all the different states that make up the union.

31. Talk about the differences in people, culture and topography of the different states so they appreciate the differences in different areas of their country.

32. Talk to them about different people and cultures of the world so they realize the world is a very big place.

33. Pull fun political cartoons from different papers online to look at and try to decode the message in them.

34. Create a survey and have them poll their friends and family so they learn about the importance of gauging other people’s interests and learn how polling works.

35. For the next election, encourage them to volunteer to register voters.

36. For the next election, take them to a political rally.

37. Encourage them to use their Social Media activities for good. Let the young people in your household know that even though they may not be eligible to vote yet, they could certainly encourage friends and family members they interact with who can use social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

38. Take a tour of the city council offices.

39. Take your child to a town hall meeting.

40. Download fun facts about government, the White House, Congress and local governments from online resources.

41. Talk to them about what the different parties stand for.

42. Talk to them about third party candidates and their role in elections over the years.

43. Participate in a live chat or another meet and greet opportunity with your local elected officials.

44. Talk to them about local issues that are of concern to your town, city, community or state.

45. Help them make a collage of state symbols.

46. Have them write a letter to the President.

47. Have them write a letter to a soldier.

48. Get your middle or high schooler to organize a donation drive for the soldiers.

49. Get them to memorize the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

50. Play a game that helps them memorize the capitals of the different states.

Hopefully, one or a few of these activities will help you grow strong, independent thinking, civically- and socially- conscious children.

Review: Lucky & Me Bike Shorts & Undergarments are Great For Active Girls

gg

Young active little girls who are frequently in dresses need comfy, fit and breathable undergarments to wear under their uniforms and dresses while on the playground. Lucky & Me, makers of girls and boys underwear, have them covered with its Jada Bike Shorts.

The tri-blend fabric is made of cotton, modal and spandex and has a beautiful lace trim around the thigh. The company sent my daughter some of the shorts and a collection of their Ava Girls Bikini cotton with lace trim and rosettes briefs to test out. GG’s part “tomboy” and part “girly girl” and she liked the little flowers that appear as a signature item on each brief and pair of shorts.

gg active

My daughter GG is active in several school and recreational team sports year round: cross country long distance running, soccer, gymnastics, track & field and swimming.

My 8-year old is very active in sports and generally, and has been since she was a baby when we enrolled her in gymnastics at one year old.

My daughter GG took gymnastics when she was two years old

She is enrolled in several team sports year round: Cross country, Soccer, Track and Field and Swimming. Also, in school, she wears a uniform which requires her to wear undershorts when on the playground.

gg-sports2

GG is part girly girl, but because she has two older brothers, she is quite active and is also a bit of a ‘tomboy’.

From GG’s experience, the shorts didn’t rise up though they were longer than her dress so we had to hike them up a bit. But the underwear were lovely and not tight so they didn’t restrict her circulation. We loved the variety of colors. The shorts retain their shaped after washing. They sell in packs of three for $25 and in sizes 2 to 10. The Ava undies come in packs of 6 for about $32.00 but they are superior quality and long-lasting so they’re worth it as well.

Whether doing cartwheels on the playground or wearing a sports skort or shorts during practice or play, the products from Lucky & Me worked perfectly to provide comfort and security.

For boys, Lucky & Me sells boxer shorts or boxer briefs and also an organic cotton line version of the line in its  Grayson and Lily collections.

Kelly Clarkson: Pregnancy Was ‘Horrible’, Made Hubby Get Vasectomy

Twitter

Twitter

Kelly Clarkson didn’t think pregnancy was “beautiful” or “magical” like everyone says and had such a horrific experience that she forced her husband, Brandon Blackstock, to get a vasectomy.

In a recent article with Refinery29, she explained her experience with back-to-back pregnancies which also included massive weight gain and intense public and media attention that wasn’t always too kind.

“It’s horrible. Nothing is beautiful, nothing is magical. Whatever, you’re that person that gets that pregnancy, good for you,” she said. “But I will remind my children every day of their lives what I [went through].”

And not only was her pregnancy with daughter River Rose challenging, so was her pregnancy with son Remington Alexander which she said was even worse and prompted her decision to have ‘no more kids.’

“I was literally pregnant with Remi, and I was like, ‘You are getting fixed,” she said of her convo with Blackstock. “This will never happen to me again. If something happens, it’s a miracle of God. I literally told my Ob/Gyn on the table while open, ‘If I get pregnant again, I will find you!”

Clarkson overcame being the child of a divorce and having an absentee father who only wanted something to do with her once she became famous.

Right before giving birth to Remington, she returned to perform on the final season of the TV talent show which made her famous American Idol.

While performing her ballad “Piece By Piece about her disappointment of a dad and her wonderful stepdad, she become emotional and paused singing several times and almost broke down in tears before ending the song with the lyrics h“He’ll never break her heart, he’ll love her,” in reference to her husband’s relationship with their daughter.

Ways to Commemorate Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

teddy bear loss

Approximately one million pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage, still birth and death of a newborn. October is recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, as designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.

Having a baby can be one of the most joyful moments of a person’s life, but what is the emotional impact when that joy turns to grief if the child dies during pregnancy or shortly after birth.

Nationwide, at health centers, women and patient support initiatives hold events in memory of those lost and to raise awareness, and aide women and their partners dealing with loss.

This type of loss is very very sensitive and when talking to a woman or her partner who have endured this type of pain, here are some stats to consider:
  • One in four pregnancies ends in the loss of a baby
  • The loss of a child is recognized as the most intense cause of grief
  • Parents never “get over” the loss of a child – no matter the age
  • Parents experiencing grief without supportive care can have debilitating consequences such as post traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) , depression and anxiety that could further result in job loss, divorce, difficulties in daily living, or impediments with parenting of living children
Getting support through grief is key to recovery, according to Missouri-based Perinatal Bereavement Care.
This month, search for a support event near you and/or consider doing one of the following to commemorate a loss:
  • Wear a special piece of jewelry in the name of the lost child
  • Get a tattoo
  • Purchase a star in the lost baby’s honor and name picked out for her or him
  • Hold a special ceremony with friends and family
  • Put together an album with photos of the mom while pregnant to commemorate that special time
  • Visit the burial plot if you got one for your baby
Also, to spread the word, talk openly about infant and pregnancy loss because the more people are aware, the less a stigma it becomes and more women know that they are not alone and have allies and supporters.

How a Pregnant Olivia Wilde Looks When She’s Ready to Cut a Paparrazo

olivia-wilde-oliviawilde-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos-fm

Olivia Wilde is not really feeling all of the paparazzi that stalk her daily life these days, especially now that she is heavily pregnant with her second baby with fiance, actor Jason Sudeikis.

She posted a photo this weekend of herself sitting on a part bench while out and about.

“Death stare sent this weirdo photog with a giant nat geo lens (ya know, the kind you use to snap wild animals who would kill you if you got too close) scurrying backwards into the park bush he was literally, and I do mean literally, stalking me from,” she captioned a photo of herself posted on Instagram. “Wtffffffff. When you see pics of people looking angry it’s because they’re reacting normally to an extremely abnormal situation. I’m posting this so people understand that this ? face is how it feels to be followed by strange men (sorry but it’s almost never a woman) who climb trees to snap pics of pregnant ladies. Not cool.#mamawolfwillcutyou #robocop

I must say that I do appreciate her casual street style in that BlankNYC green bomber jacket (retail $148), grey maternity T, distressed denim maternity jeans and over sized tote with cool aviators! Her facial bone structure is to die for in this photo! #AngryCute

Will Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher Punk Us with Another Gender-Bender Baby Name?

ashton kutcher

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have selected a name for their soon-to-be-born 2nd child, a baby boy and we at the Bellyitch offices are hedging bets on whether they’ll flip the script on the gender bender celeb baby naming trend.

Kutcher confirmed that he and his wife are expecting  a baby boy after the two gave their first child, a daughter a male name: Wyatt.

In 2013, we blogged about the then celebrity -name trend of giving girls boy or unconventional objects names. Back then, the celebs on the list included:

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian : North

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon: Monroe

Lisa Ling: Jett

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson: Maxwell

Beyonce Knowles and Jay Z: Blue

Toni Collette: Sage

Gwynth Paltrow: Apple

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves: Vida

Then we updated that post in May 201 and noted that even more celebrities were naming their baby girls, traditional boy names:

Haylie Duff named her daughter Ryan
CaCee Cobb named her daughter Wilder a
Sara Gilbert has a daughter Sawyer.
Savannah Guthrie  named her daughter Vale
Ashton Kutcher  and Mila Kunis named her daughter Wyatt
Kristin Cavallari, Bristol Palin and Liv Tyler named their respective daugher, Saylor/Sailor
We also pointed out others that we missed
Rebecca Gayheart named her daughter Billie
Heidi Klum named her daughter Lou
Soleil Moon Frye has a daughter named Jagger Joseph
And recognized that the trend really isn’t that new given older celebs have “been” giving their baby girls boy names
Diane Keaton’s daughter is named Dexter
Teri Hathcher’s daughter is called Emerson
Michelle Branch‘s daughter is Owen
Melissa Etheridge’s daughter is named Johnnie
Rebecca Romijn‘s dauhter is Charlie
Angie Harmon is a rebel all three of her daughters have male names; Avery, Finley and Emery
Will the Kutchers join the likes of Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz who named their son Genesis or Shakira who names her son Sasha? Time will tell.

What’s On my Blogger’s Holiday Wishlist

bloggers wish list

I just realized that everything I put on my Blogger’s Christmas Wish List year sold out! Hmmm…. I’m going to give this a try again and let you all know what are on my wish list this Christmas. (This is not my official Blog Gift Guide just what this particular Blogger would like)

Here we go:

otter box

1

After losing several phones to cracks, I only use Otter box cases because they are the max for durability and handling tumbles and spills. Phones are expensive and I cannot afford to have them broken because my cover couldn’t handle the job. However, I am getting tired of seeing selfies with my old grey Otter cover in the photo.  That is pretty sterile and boring in color. I spotted a Bahamas Blue and Candy Pink one for just $21, a drop from the original $39.99 on Amazon.com! Crossing my fingers to get a hold of it before it goes out of stock!

prada boots

2

Just because someone had the nerve to offer up a pair of genuine Prada patent leather boots at an affordable price of $95 on The Real Real, I have to have them! And they look comfy to wear and I know that brand would be long lasting! Gimme gimme! now!

nikon camera

3

I am starting to do more fashion photography and editorial shots so I need to upgrade my camera to a DSLR. I’ve heard great things about Canon cameras but I like the Nikon D3200 Digital SLR because it comes with a complete kit that includes two lenses, a bag, a tripod, an SD memory card and more for just $599.00. You cannot beat that.

ruched leggings

4

I live in casual clothing and I love my leggings and yoga pants like I love warm bread and butter. I spotted a pair of ruched cargo leggings made by XCVI that I think are perfect because they are fitted yet loose in areas. I think the cargo color is edgy and would work great worn with sneakers, ballet slippers or with a pair of boots. It’s very versatile. I’d love to get these (retail $110) and a few other leggings in wild prints. They are comfortable and the quirky prints lifts the mood during short winter days.

burberry

5

When I go out to cover events or simply while out and about, I prefer to layer and wear a lightweight coat jacket as opposed to a heavy coat. I need one that is waterproof and has a hood to keep my head warm. A stylish version in a vibrant color would add fashion to the functionality and that is why Burberry’s Hooded Shell Trench coat is on my list as well.  You can wear it over a turtleneck and the hood is removable when you want to go with a less sporty look. It’s a bit pricey at $750 but so worth it because of the quality construction and you can see the signature checkered print showing through signaling to all that you are a little bit of a brand whore, not that ostentatious as one though. (* snicker * )

surface

6

I’m not a Mac girl yet and still into PCs so a Microsoft Surface Pro because my kids broke my Chromebook and I want a laptop that can also be a tablet but can also be scribbled on when I want to make quick notes or draw something for inspiration. It’s on sale now at Best Buy for $899 when it retails for $999. It also comes with an ethernet dock and Internet Security.

rugged-wearhouse

7

A $100 gift card to Rugged Warehouse because I could really make that stretch and pick up a bunch of neat and unique earrings, rings, screen ts, funky heels and the like.

etsy

8

A gift certificate for $250 to splurge at Etsy and pick up a bunch of unique, eclectic pieces that can be used in OOTD shoots, for flat lays or functionally in my craft.

appsumo

9

A $250 credit at AppSumo so I can purchase some Blog techie stuff!

Crossing my fingers and sending out vibes and prayers to the universe that I can score some of these awesome items this Christmas! (smile)

Here is my 2015 list:

bloggers wish list2

This time of year, people are assembling their Christmas wish list and dropping hints. I am one of them! Here are 6 items on my wish list:

1. For Love & Lemons Ashley Raglan Sweater • For Love & Lemons • $264

I love silk and silk blend sweaters because they feel great on the skin and have longevity compared to those made of synthetic materials. You can wear this Raglan sweater with jeans on the weekend or over dress pants and wear them at an evening function. Love.

2. CONVERSE ALL STAR Boots • Converse • $108

It’s getting cold so it’s boots weather and because I’m always on the go, these Converse boots are a combo of my active sneakers and my riding boots and are Perfect! They are different and will turn heads.

3. Burberry BE2120 3002 Rectangle Plastic Eyeglasses-51mm • Burberry • $149.49

I lost these very same glasses a month after I got them this year so a replacement would be great. I love these frames. They fit my face wonderfully.

4. Apple iPad Pro $1079 +

I was one of those people who tuned in to watch the unveiling of the new iPad online. I am excited that it is large enough to function as a laptop and a tablet. I checked out the specs and other functionalities and they’re tops. I’d die if I got one of these on Christmas morn.

5. Burberry Small Leather & Canvas Check Henham Crossbody Bag • Burberry • $575

I don’t go anywhere without my Coach cross body bag. It lets me keep my hands free and my bag secure to my body. I would love to  get a larger one that can fit more things and can let me give my other bag a rest. This Burberry cross body bag would be ideal!

6. Marc by Marc Jacobs Door Knob iPhone 6 Case • Marc by Marc Jacobs • $88

I have been using the massive protective Otter case that I purchased when I got my iPhone 6 Plus for the longest time because not a lot of manufacturers of chic cases had them available when I first got it. I’m a selfie queen so a stylish alternative to the boring grey I have now would be amazing!.

That’s it for this blogger! What’s on your Christmas wish list?

Hurricane Matthew Could Cause You to Go Into Labor

could-hurricane-matthew-make-you-go-into-labor-fit-pregnancy-and-baby

If you are one of the many women in the eye of Hurricane Matthew and are expecting any day now, be careful because there are high probability that the natural disaster could come during a natural disaster.

A 1985 study  found that low barometric pressure common during storms causes premature membrane rupture.  Another study published in Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics back in 2007 stated that low barometric pressure (which is a hallmark of hurricanes) can lead to spontaneous delivery.

There have been plenty of women have gone into labor during blizzards, disastrous floods and yes, even hurricanes. Fit Pregnancy did a feature in the past on a nurse who delivered babies during Hurricane Sandy a few years back.

Having a baby during a black out, relying on the back up generator and in the middle of an evacuation can be scary!

The site also has a pretty interesting video of women who actually delivered in the middle of storms! Their stories are captivating and fortunately, all the ones featured had happy endings! Watch them Here!
