Freddie Gray: why Black parents tell their sons to walk not run during chaos

Tonight, the city of Baltimore is in a state of unrest over the death of a 25-year old Baltimore city man named Freddie Gray.
The charging documents state Gray saw officers nearby and ran away, they chased him and later found a switch blade in his pocket, but nothing more.  But he got arrested anyway. He later died of his injuries presumably sustained while in custody and traveling with officers in a police van.
If Freddie Gray would have calmly walked away when he saw police officers two Sundays ago, perhaps they wouldn’t have chased him, and maybe he would be alive today.
You have to pause and think about that statement to truly appreciate its impact.
In 2013, after the verdict in the Trayvon Martin murder trial, many parents of black boys, understandably felt anxious. Many empathized with Martin’s parents and felt a connection to the 17 -year old who was killed by a neighborhood nightwatchman George Zimmerman.
Back then, I too, as a mom to two black boys felt some angst. The tension of the times caused me to pen a post on my political website Jenebaspeaks.com with a list of 12 things parents of black children, and especially boys, have to teach their young that non-black parents don’t.
This was number 8 on that list:

When a fight breaks out at a club, the mall, the park or anywhere,  leave the scene quickly, but walk swiftly, don’t run. You running away may give off the appearance that you are guilty of something and leaving the scene of a crime.

Eventually, calm will be restored in Baltimore. There will be investigations and perhaps arrests, charges and maybe convictions, though you never know these days.
But at bottom, when we get to the part where we start redressing concerns, we really have to think about how low the bar for probable cause to arrest a person in a drug infested neighborhood in America is.
Yes, Gray had a criminal rap sheet over petty drugs and was carrying a switch blade at the time.
But that day the only thing he did which led to the chain of events that would ultimately end with him losing his life was RUN.

‘Here Comes Honey Boo Boo’s Mama June will be a grandma again

At the ripe old age of 35, former VH1 reality TV star Mama June Shannon will be a two time grandmom.

The family matriarch cast member of the now-canceled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo announced via Instagram that her oldest daughter, Anna Shannon Cardwell, 20, is pregnant with her second child.

“Well guess who will b a gigi and aunts again in December we will,” she captioned the photo with all the kids and Cardwell’s daughter Kaitlyn, adding ”@annamarie35 texted me late last night and told me she was 6 wks as of thursday.”

She wasn’t too thrilled about becoming a grandmother again so soon. She expressed some concern about  Cardwell and her husband Michael Cardwell‘s age.

“They r too young to have another one i will support her and Michael but katilyn will always b gigis first baby,” she wrote in the caption.

It was Cardwell’s allegation that Mama June’s on-again-off-again boyfriend Mark McDaniel molested her as a child which lead to the eventual cancelling of the show.

Why this writer while pregnant wished she was carrying a girl

Today, over on our partner site at Pop Sugar Moms, author and new first time mom Kate Schweitzer has a heartwarming post on why she wanted a baby girl when she found out she was first pregnant.
Generally, in society, when we hear a pregnant woman express preference for wanting her unborn child to be of a certain gender, we may be quick to dismiss her reason as based on the superficial: maybe she just wants to dress a girl, maybe she wants a boy because she doesn’t want the stress of raising a daughter or thinks a male child has more value.
But Schweitzer’s reason is more tender than that. Read the relatively short post over at PopSugar Moms HERE!

For this Tuesday’s broadcast of the 10th Anniversary special of the hit prime-time TV dance competition, returning pro-dancers and celebrities from past seasons will perform including Season 14th’s Katherine Jenkins.
The British opera singer is 4 months pregnant with her first child, a girl, with husband since last September 2014 Andrew Levitas
“Thankfully I’ve been very active in my pregnancy so far, so when I got the invitation to perform on the show it was too much of a wonderful opportunity to pass up,” she told PEOPLE. “Obviously we had to consider certain things with the choreography, but everyone is looking after me and she’s getting a lot of attention! Even the wardrobe department have kindly offered to make me a sequin sparkly dress.”

How to pick a kid-friendly dog for your family

We’re thinking of eventually getting a family dog, especially for our middle kid who loves animals so hirananny’s tips for selecting the right dog comes in handy:
In the age-old “cat people versus dog people” debate, the votes have been tabulated and the results show that your household is a “dog family.” The only problem is that you don’t actually have a family dog. Remedying the situation provides everyone in the household with companionship and entertainment, helps to teach kids about the responsibility of caring for another living thing and puts a stop to the endless begging, cajoling and whining for a dog. The only thing left to do is choose your dog, but how do you make such a big decision?
Do Your Research
Before you make a selection, you’ll need to have a bit of basic knowledge at your disposal. Purebred dogs purchased from a breeder may have a genetic disposition for certain health problems, but their personalities can be predicted more precisely when they’re still puppies. Mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier than their purebred counterparts, but may be a bit more difficult in terms of personality and predictability.
Visit a Shelter or Breeder
Choosing to adopt from a shelter rescues a dog that may otherwise be euthanized, allows you to brag about making a socially-conscious choice and gives you the option of adopting an adult animal, rather than a rambunctious youngster in need of training. Purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder allows you to select a particular breed and bring home a young animal that you can train to suit the needs of your family. But be ethical and avoid puppy mills and online pup websites which don’t provide the best beginning or nurturing start for most dogs. Whichever route you choose, you should make a few kid-free visits before making a decision so you can observe the environment the dog is accustomed to, learn more about their individual personalities and make an informed decision before the younger members of your family become attached to a dog that’s ultimately a bad fit with your collective lifestyle.
Think About Your Family Routine
Choosing the right dog for your family will require you to carefully examine the routine of your household. If everyone is away from the house for hours on end, you may want to select a more independent animal that requires less affection and dedicated play time. If you homeschool, have kids that haven’t yet reached school age and one parent stays home, you can comfortably select a dog that requires more attention.
Consider the Age of Your Youngest Child
If you have a toddler or infant that doesn’t yet respond well to verbal direction, you’ll need to make sure that the dog you bring into your home is patient and mature. In these situations, an adult dog may be more suitable than a puppy. Breeds that are known to be anxious, like Chihuahuas, will almost certainly be too nervous when the boisterous attention of a very young child is focused on the dog.
Realize That Babies and Puppies Don’t “Grow Up Together”
The idea that your baby and your puppy will “grow up together” is a charming one, but it’s just not feasible most of the time. Juggling the demands of an infant with those of an untrained, excitable puppy can easily prove to be overwhelming, which is why so many great dogs find themselves in a shelter. An adult dog may be a better choice for families with very young children, while a charming puppy is fine for households with older kids that can understand the proper handling and treatment of a fragile, high-energy puppy.
Keep Size in Mind
The adorable pup that fits in the palm of your hand will one day grow up, and its size will have an impact on how you care for it. Remember that even Saint Bernards start off relatively small, but they grow quickly and can be too much for a small household with young children. Before you fall in love with a puppy at the shelter, try to determine how big it will be when it reaches adulthood. A Great Dane-sized animal simply won’t fit in a small apartment.
Choosing a dog is an exciting milestone, but it’s not a trial-and-error situation. Surrendering a dog because he isn’t right for your family will almost always endanger his life, a situation that simply isn’t fair to the defenseless dog in your care. Rather than making an impulsive choice that you later discover was a bad one, take your time and determine exactly what sort of dog will be best for your family. When you’re patient and committed to making the right choice the first time, you’re making a wonderful addition to your family and are not risking the life of an innocent animal.

White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Red Carpet: Celeb moms and others take DC!

Tonight is the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton. The charity event is a glitzy night for journalists who cover the White House to dress up and mingle with politicos, policitians and policy makers in a relaxed atmoshpere.

Over the years, the event has become a big draw for celebrities and with that, the event’s red carpet is ripe for celeb spotting.

Indeed, several of the celebrity women we’ve covered in the past and currenlty expecting stars graced the red carpet.

Glee  actress Naya Rivera looked radiant in a white floor length (careful mama) Tadashi Shoji evening gown.

I really dug model Adriana Lima‘s black Bibhu Mohapatra gown with the sheer bodice and fitted bottom. The red lip really set off this look and it accented well with her wavy side-swept locks.

Ivanka Trump‘s red strapless fishtail gown was super gorg!

Mom-to-be Model Anne V ‘s lovely floral gown rocked.

Laverne Cox was also there killing it!

Haven’t seen Lucy Liu for a while. She looked amaze-balls as well!

Blackish Tracee Ellis Ross‘ vibrant orange gown was a standout as well.

I loved Alfre Woodard‘s look too. She certainly looks refreshing and quite younger here!

Celebrity, Surrogacy & Vanity controversy

                 Bellyitch Rewind

Surrogacy, pregnancy and Vanity are controversial topics this sometimes go hand in hand.
E! Entertainment hostess Giuliana Rancic went through infertility, several failed in vitro fertilization attempts and at least one miscarriage before opting on a gestational carrier. The surrogate pregnancy of their son Edward Duke was the subject of her Style channel reality TV show Giuliana and Bill

Camille Grammer, the ex wife of Kelsey Grammer and Real Housewives of Beverly Hillsreality TV star reportedly suffers from irritable bowel syndrome which prevented her from being able to carry her own kids and forced her to bring her two children, Mason and Olivia, into this world via a carrier.

Elizabeth Banks’ two kids were birthed via gestational surrogate. Her last was also.

And before Nicole Kidman finally settled on a carrier given her advanced maternal age, she had two miscarriages trying to conceive the traditional way.
After having her first child “naturally”, Sarah Jessica Parker struggled to conceive again and turned to surrogacy to deliver her twin girls in 2009.
After 7 years of failed attempts to conceive, actress Angela Bassett and husband Courtney Vance welcomed twins Brownyn and Slater in 2006.
Irrespective of the reasons, there remains a stigma and unspoken presumption among many that women who conceive this way are trying to save their bodies from the stretching out, pigmentation and other trauma and stresses of carrying a child, including excessive weight gain in some cases. Camille Grammer‘s co-stars reportedly went on record saying that was her true reason for not having her babies through conventional methods.
Former cast member Adrienne Maloof was under a similar controversy after castmate Brandi Granville revealed during a dinner party that was taped for airing on the Bravo TV show that Maloof’s two children were born via a carrier. Apparently, Maloof had previously spoken about actually carrying her babies herself.  I don’t know if this is true. Don’t sue me, Adrienne. Read this post from Tamara Tattles which covers it well.
It’s a tough route to go especially considering that no matter how you explain your reasons for using a carrier, there will always be a cloud of suspicion that they were truly for vanity sake.
And when a star does admit that she is afraid of the effects pregnancy  would have on her body, she is harshly criticized over it.

Biggest Loser star Jillian Michaels got a lot of heat and flak after saying that she had decided to adopt a child rather than try to get pregnant because she worked too hard to have the body she has and was not willing to let pregnancy ruin it.
The New York Times has a wonderful, but a bit lengthy, piece, “Her Body, My Baby” written by a woman who welcomed a child via a surrogate. It’s a worthwhile read for anyone thinking of going that road to have a child.

Mother’s Day: Give a socially conscious gift to mom

Thinking of going a non traditional route for a gift for mom this Mother’s Day?
Is your mom no longer with us but you’d like to give something in her memory?
Consider donating in mom’s honor to the International Rescue Committee, which this week launched a campaign of rescue gifts for mothers in developing nations, in conflict or those that recently experienced a natural disaster like Syrai, the Congo or the Phillippines.
For $24, you can gift a safe delivery of a mom that will ensure critical supplies and assistance are provided for a safe childbirth.
For $52, a baby and a mom in a country like Kenya can receive adequate advice, medical assistance and other support. And for $56, a young girl in Afghanistan, for example, can go to school for a year. They’re the perfect gift for the socially conscious or eco-friendly mom in your life and it’s great for last minute gift.
New mom and Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum  Morena Baccarin, Rashida Jones, John Legend, Jencarlos Canela and Sarah Wayne Callies have supported IRC’s efforts.
Ingrid & Isabel, a maternity apparel company, will match all “Rescue Gift” purchases to the IRC up to $30,000 as part of the IRC’s Mother’s Day campaign.
There are more than three dozen gift options at varying prices.  The recipient of each “Rescue Gift” will receive a personalized printed card or an eCard describing the gift and how it will impact the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

Reality TV Moms who went from obscurity to Business Moguls

VH1.com  assembled a list of reality TV stars who were relatively unknown before and were able to parlay their appearances on docu series and become business moguls.  Moms dominated the list which included many current and past Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms!

Bethenny Frankel‘s Skinny Girl major distribution and buyout deal, Snooki‘s New York Times Best seller appearances, Kristin Cavallari‘s shoe line and subsequent E! TV hosting show and of course Kourtney and Kim Kardashian with all their Kardashian gold!

It left of the dozens or so who have launched websites, clothing, shoes and make up lines, books and videos. We’re thinking, Phaedra Parks with her multiple ventures like exercise DVDs and all the other housewives from various series,  VH1 own’s Love and Hip Hop stars Rasheeda and Yandy Smith, and several others who have clothing companies.

But still, that says a lot about the hustle of moms who were relatively unknown before and managed to use their stardom on a TV show and parlay that into lucrative business ventures for their families.

Yay moms! Happy Mother’s Day!
