10 Summertime Hacks

10 summer hacks

Avoid and deal with some minor Summer-related annoyances and inconveniences with these 10 Summertime Hacks provided by our friends at SummerNanny.

marshmallow
1. Stop drippy ice cream cones with a marshmallow or chocolate. Ice cream is a delicious summertime favorite, but often ends up being a very messy treat when eating outdoors in the heat. To prevent your sugar cone from leaking, drop a couple of mini marshmallows into the bottom before you add your ice cream scoops, or dribble some melted chocolate down into the bottom of all of your cones. In addition to stopping leaks, there will be a yummy treat at the bottom, especially once it hardens, and both solutions will stop the drips from ending up on your kids.

candles

2. Light up your next outside dinner party by using cupcake papers. Candlelight is a beautiful addition down the center of an outdoor table and works well because candles are generally low and won’t block the view of the person sitting across the table. The problematic part of using candles is that you have to invest in a bunch of candle holders and deal with the cleanup of all of the melted wax. Until now. Instead of using candle holders, use foil cupcake papers as your holders and tea lights for your candles. The foil will reflect the candlelight as well as capture the melted wax and make cleanup a breeze.

flower pots

3. Protect your food from flying pests by using a pretty flower pot. Buy a few big clay pots. You can buy them already painted or paint them yourself. To make the pots easy to pick up you’ll need to add on a handle. You can do so by taking some pretty cording or rope and cutting off about 10 inches, then folding the cording in half and poking the folded end through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Turn the pot over and tie the ends on the inside into a knot to prevent the cord from pulling out. Now you are ready to cover your food for your next outside gathering.

get+rid+of+flies

4. Gnats and flies love to walk all over food. Place a fan at one end of the table and create a breeze across the table. Gnats and flies don’t have particularly strong wings and won’t be able to fly through the breeze, thereby forcing them to stay away from the food and your guests.

pool - Copy

5. Keep your food cold outside by using a baby pool. Baby pools are inexpensive and if you buy the blow up kind they are easy to store as well. If you want to keep salads cool just set the baby pool up on top of the food table and fill it with a few inches of ice. As the food arrives your guests can place dishes right on ice. Another use for the baby pool is to keep your drinks cold and easily accessible. You can set this pool anywhere, but placing it in the shade will help your ice last a little longer.

Sun-tea-in-mason-jars

6. Jazz up your sun tea. Use different flavors of tea in your jar to bring a new mix to your tea. Once your tea has brewed in the sun add some mint leaves and fruit juice and refrigerate it until it’s time to serve it.

get rid of ants - Copy

7. Keep unwanted ants away during your next picnic.  Mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle and shake.  Spray the solution on picnic tables, under the table, and anywhere that people might be standing.

ice cream

8. Stop wasting ice cream. Once open, ice cream is exposed to the air in the freezer and starts to form ice crystals, and if you leave it in there for too long the ice cream won’t be any good. To avoid ice crystals just press a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on the surface of the ice cream and it will stay fresh all the way till the last scoop.

bees - Copy

9. Set a trap to keep the bees away from your guests. Find a spot that is at the edge of the area you are entertaining in and place a few bowls of sweet soda for the bees to drink. The bees will be too interested in drinking the soda to bother you or your guests.

cornstarch - Copy

10. Use corn starch to prevent chafing. Chafing happens to kids and adults alike in the summer due to their being more sweat forming between your skin and clothes. Corn starch is absorbent and it’s very soft to the touch. It works well to smooth it on legs or under bras to reduce the painful heat rash that occurs.

Bristol Palin calls Her 2nd Unwed pregnancy “disappointing”

Bristol Palin is expecting her second child.

The former Dancing With The Stars contestant announced the news which she described as “disappointing” in a blog post today:

“I wanted you to be the first to know that I am pregnant,” she wrote on her blog. “Honestly, I’ve been trying my hardest to keep my chin up on this one.

“I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you,” she added.

The former two-time reality show star and memoir author continued, “at the end of the day there’s nothing I can’t do with God by my side, and I know I am fully capable of handling anything that is put in front of me with dignity and grace.”

Bristol, whose mom is the former Alaska governor and U.S. Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, was engaged to U.S. Marine veteran Dakota Meyer. The two called off their wedding days before the blessed event.

Bristol was thrust into the limelight when her mom, a staunch family values advocate, had to announce her pregnancy on the first day of the Republican presidential convention. She later got engaged to Levi Johnston who is the father to her first son in December 2008. They broke up a few months after, however.

She did not disclose who is her second child’s dad is.

STUDY: Broadband Access linked to Teen Pregnancy Reduction

broadband

Broadband access is being credited for decreasing teen pregnancy, The Guardian reports

A recent study at the German Institute (IZA) concluded that “at least 13% of the total decline in the teen birth rate between 1999 and 2007 can be explained by increases in high speed internet access” in the United States.

Melanie Guldi from the University of Central Florida and Chris Herbst from Arizona State University conclude:

Broadband internet has the potential to shape in powerful ways the nature and intensity of individuals’ social connections as well as the quantity and quality of information received on relationships and sexual health … Americans are increasingly turning to the internet for a wide range of advice on romantic relationships, sex, and contraceptive methods.

Americans – including teens – are asking for guidance on everything from whether they should have sex with a certain individual and the most effective forms of contraception to how to deal with a cheating boyfriend. Teens, who now spend more time engaging with various forms of media – much of it on-line – than any other activity (aside from sleep), are particularly well-positioned to take advantage of new information and relationship landscape created by explosion in broadband internet.

Reducing teen pregnancies is just one of the many plus-sides of increased broadband access. Recent research shows that better internet connections can increase monthly household income by £200 ($314) in developed households, by improving access to learning and working from home.

Sounds simplistic, but the decline in teen pregnancies could also be that they’re too busy watching YouTube.

Columnist begs parents to Quit it with Odd Spellings of Common Baby Names

paul name

Are you one of those parents who, when deciding on a name for your baby before he or she was born, wanted something very unique?

So even though you liked “Madison” as a name, you decided to help her stand out by spelling it “Madicyn” or like “Madyson” or “Madisyn”

Or are you that parent who skipped on the tradition spelling of Brittney and opted for “Brittny”, “Brittneigh”, “Brit’nee”, “Britany” or “Bryttney”?

Maybe, Chase was too blah so you opted for “Chace” or “Chayce”?

Caden too? Boring. How about “Kaden” or “Kaeden”, “Caidyn” or “Cayden”?

Turn a simple biblical name like Isaiah on its head and you’ve got” Isah”, “Isaieh”, “Isaah” or “Izaiah”

A couple of the Kardashians are named Khloe instead of Chloe and Kourtney instead of Courtney because their parents wanted all the first names to start with the first letter of their last name.

khloe and kourt host

Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian

It’s cute, but did you take it one step further and turned Chloe into “Kloey”?

Flip Jacqueline around and you’ve got “Jaq’leen”.

Speaking of parenthesis and hyphens.

One New York City teacher listed the most unique names she had ever come across on her roster:

breathing-hurts-gif
Somaily (Sa miley), Dimmamelle (Dimel), Joedan (Jordan), Sha-Niyhah (Shania), Jerleek,  Shaqueena and Marqwell. She called them HR nightmare names. Pity that is coming from a teacher though.

These are the unique names that author and New York Times columnist Paul Schmidtberger complained about in a May 7, 2010 piece.

In it he writes that “parents shouldn’t impose cryptic, incoherent or foolish spellings on their own children, nor on society as a whole.”

Schmidtberger goes on to say parents will “condemn their children to a lifetime of bleakly repeating that, no, the name in question is spelled “Shaiyahne” not “Cheyenne.”

Sounds a bit curmudgeonly to me.  But I say this as a person with an African name Jeneba that I always have had  to repeat, carefully spell and correct people’s punctuation of, most of my life. My husband who is named Dave and not David has to constantly tell people that no he wasn’t just giving them a nickname when he told them his name.

Yet, our first kid, who we named Caleb, is not pronounced like the traditional way but slightly different. You’d think we had learned a lesson from what we went thru growing up always correcting folks. ha!

We just liked the name but didn’t care for going with Caleb with a K because we just didn’t want to. Really it was right after 9/11 and didn’t want him to accidentally end up on a no-fly list.

But what’s it to anyone, really?

However, does Schmidtberger have a point? Should parents stick with the traditional spelling of names?

“Misspelling a child’s name won’t make Junior special, creative or unique,” the New Jersey native writes.” Y’s and I’s are not interchangeable, and apostrophes are not some sort of newfangled confetti to be sprinkled liberally throughout groups of letters.”

Does he have a point or is just being a male Debbie Downer? Sound off in the comment section below.

Hosting a Baby Shower this Spring? Check out these tips, recipes, links and more!

fun baby shower

If you plan to host a baby shower this Spring or Summer, you are fortunate to have more options and flexibility than in the Fall or Winter.  Backyards, rooftops and patios become options for a venue. You can save money too by hosting it at a park or making your own favors with outdoorsy themes versus buying them like the super cute tutu nail polishes and the “Ready to Pop” favors above.

Shower hosts can serve cool and refreshing mocktails too like the “Summer Is Coming Mocktail” created by Zico brand ambassador and celebrity nutritionist, Tanya Zuckerbrot, of the renowned F-Factor Diet.

It’s made with Zico‘s newest flavor: watermelon raspberry coconut water. I mixed up a batch using a sampling of complimentary stock Zico provided me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and because there is no alcohol in it, I shared some with the kids and they loved it too. The lime and mint garnishes give it the perfect kick at the end. Yummy. Here is the recipe for the Summer Is Coming Mocktail recipe:

mocktails

Serves 8

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups ZICO watermelon raspberry coconut water

1 small seedless watermelon, flesh removed and diced (about 4 cups total)

mint, for garnish

  1. In a blender, puree the coconut water, diced watermelon and juice from the limes.
  2. Pour the mixture into a pitcher over ice.
  3. Serve by pouring 2 oz. of the pureed mixture into a glass. Fill to the top with lemon-lime soda and mix lightly to combine.
  4. Garnish with mint.

And before you start planning for a Spring or Summer shower,  you must head over to Pinterest and there you will discover links to many websites and blogs choc full of fab ideas. Here is a select few to start you off:

NBA superstar Stephen Curry stole headlines recently not just for leading his Golden State Warriors to the NBA Finals but also for his 2-year old scene-stealing daughter Riley, who attended post-game press conferences with her dad.

The adorable tot also captured the spotlight during the recent family/maternity shoot she was in with dad and mom Ayesha Curry, who is expecting the family’s second child in July.

Watch Riley in action after the post game interview a couple weeks ago after the Warriors captured Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against the Houston Rockets.

And again after clinching the championship this week in Game 5:

Family is important to Curry who teared up last year when he won a spot on the Western Conferene All-Star roster, achieving a feat his dad Dell Curry, who was a 16 year league player, could never accomplish.

Celeb Pro Surfer Bethany Hamilton’s pregnancy in 13 PHOTOS

Ever since celebrity pro surfer Bethany Hamilton Dirks announced  her pregnancy in an adorable video back in February, she has not stopped doing what she does best: shred the best waves!

The champion surfer is famously known for triumphantly recovering from a vicious 2003 shark attack that claimed her left arm. You cannot help but get infected with joy by simply scoping the awesome, fun and spirit-filled photos she shares regularly with her legions of fans and followers in social media.

And just like before, she’s treated her Twitter friends to a series of bump progression pics throughout her pregnancy…and most of them involved her being on a surfboard and riding a wave!

No surprise there given she told Huffington Post after her pregnancy announcement that she planned to surf as long as possible.

“I plan to surf as long as I can,” she said in the YouTube announcement. “Once the belly is pretty big, maybe I’ll mellow it out and spend more time swimming and enjoying the ocean.”

Whoa mama!

Add Hamilton to the long list of pregnant athletes who don’t let anything like incubating a baby get in the way of a sport and love right through the end of their respective pregnancies…like the weight lifter, the trapeze artist,  the air rifle Olympian, the ballerina, the marathon runner and others.

And when baby arrives,  Hamilton says she is prepared for the challenge!

“I often forget that I have one arm,” she said, “but when I think about it — a squirming baby and changing the diaper and just me and this squirming baby — it could be really challenging. I think that, how I live life now, I adjust and adapt to different things … I think there’s going to be things that will be very challenging with one arm, but I’ll just have to find my own way to take care of the baby … I’ll have to figure it out and be creative.”

On her due date next month, the beautiful Hamilton and her gorgeous surfer husband Adam are expecting the arrival of baby boy, their first, since marrying in 2013.

Adorbs!
