The World’s Largest Gingerbread houses

When you think of Christmas, you also think of yummy Gingerbread houses! The Daily Meal put together a slideshow of 12 of the most outrageous and amazing gingerbread homes.
Included in it is this nearly 2-ton life-size gingerbread house (above) at The Fairmont San Francisco which took the culinary team 1,100 hours to scale, mix, bake, construct, and decorate. Its 7,500 gingerbread bricks are melded together with 1,600 pounds of royal icing and decorated with 724 pounds of candy.
Here are some from that list and a few others ginormous world-record setting houses:
Through this January 11, visitors to the New York Hall of Science in Queens, New York, can take a peek at chef Jon Lovitch‘s world largest gingerbread village which is made up of 500 pounds of gingerbread, 1,000 pounds of icing.  It took him an entire year to assemble. Get a sneak peek at the video from the presentation below:

In 2013, the Guinness Book of World Records declared this 2, 520 square foot, 21-foot high Bryan, Texas gingerbread home the largest gingerbread home.  It is nearly the size of a tennis court. The deelish building is about  35.8 million calories! Well what would you expect when the recipe requires 1,800 pounds of butter, 2,925 pounds of brown sugar, 7,200 eggs, 7,200 pounds all-purpose flour, 1,080 ounces ground ginger and a few other ingredients, bake and form into panels for mounting?
In the summer, the local bees come around and leave drunk and high off of sugar! Luckily, no visitors have been stung!
That house took the title away from the massive 36,600 cubic foot gingerbread house that was on display at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota in 2012.
Each year, the White House pastry team prepares a 300-pound gingerbread replica of the White House that is displayed prominently in the home for Holiday tour visitors. Last year’s rested on a lawn of Springerle cookies. Neat features include a working North Lawn fountain, first family dogs Bo and Sunny sitting on the front steps, and lighting from within that gives the house a magical glow

Finally, you can’t eat any part of this 20,000 square feet 6-bedroom, $10 million dollar Brooklyn, New York home.  It is just called the “Gingerbread House” because of the way it looks like a real edible one. The home, built in 1917, just went on the market this year after having just  four previous owners.  The 3 and a half bathroom home rents for $ 26,000 per month, otherwise and is known for surprise architectural detailing inside.

LAST MINUTE GIFTS: 8 Great Multicultural Books published this year

Times are tense these days as the nation mourns the death of two New York City police officers shot dead execution style recently, a tragedy amidst ongoing protests over shooting deaths at the hands of unarmed men at the hands of some officers. Some parents may find themselves having to address these highly contentious issues to help their children make sense of it all.
But dealing with controversial topics like race and culture can be made easier if parents make sure that throughout their kids’ lives they expose them to the stories of diverse people and cultures different from their own.  Their children will  grow with a healthy appreciation for all people and may be more willing to take a holistic, fair, balanced and empathetic approach to listening and hearing the concerns of those who live in far off places from their own home — even if that place is within their country.
Dr. Claudette S. McLinn, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature, recently curated a listing of close to three dozen multicultural books released this year she deems the best. I selected 7  of them to share with Bellyitch readers along with one additional book I reviewed personally. I pulled the Amazon.com review summary of each book I have not read.
If you are still looking for last  minute gift ideas for young elementary thru high-school aged children, and are relatively close to a bookstore, consider popping in to see if they have these titles. Otherwise, consider ordering them from our Amazon affiliate and having them shipped to that young reader in your life.
A TIME TO DANCE by Padma Venkatraman, 307 pages, published by Nancy Paulsen Books, an imprint of Penguin Group, ©2014 (Middle school/High school, fiction/novel in verse)
Padma Venkatraman’s inspiring story of a young girl’s struggle to regain her passion and find a new peace is told lyrically through verse that captures the beauty and mystery of India and the ancient bharatanatyam dance form. This is a stunning novel about spiritual awakening, the power of art, and above all, the courage and resilience of the human spirit.
THE RED PENCIL, by Andrea Davis Pinkney, illustrated by Shane W. Evans, 308 pages, published by Little, Brown and Company, ©2014 (Upper elementary school/Middle school, nonfiction)
New York Times bestselling and Coretta Scott King Award-winning author Andrea Davis Pinkney’s powerful verse and Coretta Scott King Award-winning artist Shane W. Evans’s breathtaking illustrations combine to tell an inspiring tale of a Sudanese girl’s triumph against all odds, traveling to and surviving a refugee camp with the help of a red pencil.
THE MADMAN OF PINEY WOODS, by Christopher Paul Curtis, 363 pages, published by Scholastic Press, ©2014 (Upper elementary school/Middle school, fiction)
Benji and Red couldn’t be more different. They aren’t friends. They don’t even live in the same town. But their fates are entwined. A chance meeting leads the boys to discover that they have more in common than meets the eye. Both of them have encountered a strange presence in the forest, watching them, tracking them. Could the Madman of Piney Woods be real?
GABI: A GIRL IN PIECES, by Isabel Quintero, 284 pages, published by Cinco Puntos Press, ©2014 (High school, fiction)
Sixteen-year-old Gabi Hernandez has a lot to deal with during her senior year. Her best friend Cindy is pregnant; her other best friend Sebastian

just got kicked out of his house for coming out to his strict parents; her meth addict dad is trying to quit, again; and her super religious Tía Bertha is constantly putting a damper on Gabi’s love life. In lyrical diary entries peppered with the burgeoning poet’s writing, Spanglish, and phone conversations, Quintero gives voice to a complex, not always likable but totally believable teen who struggles to figure out her own place in the world. Believing she’s not Mexican enough for her family and not white enough for Berkeley, Gabi still meets every challenge head-on with vulgar humor and raw honesty. (Amazon review Excerpt)

TWENTY-TWO CENTS: MUHAMMAD YUNUS AND THE VILLAGE BANK, by Paula Yoo, illustrated by Jamel Akib, 40 pages, published by Lee & Low Books Inc., ©2014 (Elementary school, nonfiction/biography)
Growing up in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus witnessed extreme poverty all around and was determined to eradicate it. In 1976, as an Economics professor, Muhammad met a young craftswoman in the village of Jobra who needed to borrow five taka (twenty-two cents) to buy materials. No bank would lend such a small amount to an uneducated woman, so she was forced to borrow from corrupt lenders who charged an unfair interest

rate, and left her without enough profit to buy food. Muhammad realized that what stood in the way of her financial security was just a few cents. Inspired, Muhammad founded Grameen Bank where people could borrow small amounts of money to start a job, and then pay back the bank without exorbitant interest charges. Over the next few years, Muhammad’s compassion and determination changed the lives of millions of people by loaning the equivalent of more than ten billion US dollars in micro-credit. This has also served to advocate and empower the poor, especially women, who often have limited options. Twenty-two Cents is an inspiring story of economic innovation and a celebration of how one person—like one small loan—can make a positive difference in the lives of many.

THE CROSSOVER by Kwame Alexander, 237 pages, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, ©2014 (Middle school/High school, fiction/novel in verse)
“With a bolt of lightning on my kicks . . .The court is SIZZLING. My sweat is DRIZZLING. Stop all that quivering. Cuz tonight I’m delivering,” announces dread-locked, 12-year old Josh Bell. He and his twin brother Jordan are awesome on the court. But Josh has more than basketball in his blood, he’s got mad beats, too, that tell his family’s story in verse, in this fast and furious middle grade novel of family and brotherhood from Kwame Alexander (He Said, She Said 2013).
Josh and Jordan must come to grips with growing up on and off the court to realize breaking the rules comes at a terrible price, as their story’s heart-stopping climax proves a game-changer for the entire family.
LITTLE MELBA AND HER BIG TROMBONE, by Katherine Russell-Brown, illustrated by Frank Morrison, 34 pages, published by Lee &Low Books, Inc., ©2014 (Elementary school, nonfiction/biography, picture book)
Melba Doretta Liston loved the sounds of music from as far back as she could remember. As a child, she daydreamed about beats and lyrics, and hummed along with the music from her family s Majestic radio. At age seven, Melba fell in love with a big, shiny trombone, and soon taught herself to play the instrument. By the time she was a

teenager, Melba s extraordinary gift for music led her to the world of jazz. She joined a band led by trumpet player Gerald Wilson and toured the country. Overcoming obstacles of race and gender, Melba went on to become a famed trombone player and arranger, spinning rhythms, harmonies, and melodies into gorgeous songs for all the jazz greats of the twentieth century: Randy Weston, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and Quincy Jones, to name just a few. Brimming with ebullience and the joy of making music, Little Melba and Her Big Trombone is a fitting tribute to a trailblazing musician and a great unsung hero of jazz.

My addition:
PRINCESS CUPCAKE JONES WON’T GO TO SCHOOL  by Ylleya Fields, illustrated by Michael LaDuca, 32 pages, published by Belle Publishing, 2014 (Elementary school, fiction, picture book)
PRINCESS CUPCAKE  is a heartwarming storybook tale about a young princess who comes up with a laundry list of tricks to avoid going to school the first day. None work, but by the end she realizes quickly that school wouldn’t be bad after all. The illustrations are modern and colorful and bring Fields story to life. Personally, it reminds me of my 7-year old daughter who had to start a new school mid year recently and was also nervous about doing so. Like Cupcake Jones in this book, my daughter too made friends on the first day and quickly adapted.  This is  is the second in an ongoing series by the South American born Cleveland transplant author who said she was struck by the limit of books featuring African American characters and penned the book by blending her daughters’ personalities together. My daughter read it from front to back when the same day our complimentary review copy ($15.95) came in the mail. She loved it too!

6 Fashion Blogger Must-Haves: My Blogger’s Holiday Wish List (Pt2)

Here is part two to my Blogger’s wishlist dedicated to the fashion blogger.
Because Bellyitch is part celebrity, part fashion, part parenting blog, as the founder and editor-in-chief of this blog, I get to put on different hats on various posts.
So from the perspectives of a fashion blogger, I know that it is hard for family and friends to figure out what I may like as they may be unsure of my taste and preference. For me and any other fashion blogger in your life, it’s probably a good idea to go with accessories!
Here are my top 6 suggestions of what would or could be on a fashion blogger’s wish list or a good gift idea for them or any woman who enjoys visiting fashion blogs.
1. COSTUME JEWELRY
Personally, I enjoy wearing chunky bracelets, big bold statement necklaces and unique bright and eye-catching rings or mini-rings, and other eclectic pieces of jewelry. They are conversation items and can individualize any look. Having a gift of a new piece would be appreciated because additional pieces can be mixed and matched with jewelry already in the wardrobe. Also, costume jewelry is usually cheaper and also more likely to get lost, broken or dull quicker and thus need replacement more frequently than fine jewelry. This reason is also why it’s always a welcome gift.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

2. SCARVES
A girl can never have too many scarves! They come in all sorts of materials, patterns and styles and can accent any look. Worn like a pashmina, a scarf can dress up a casual dress. Wrapped around the neck in an infinity loop and it adds a splash of color to a mono-chromatic dress. Lighter-weight ones work in Spring and Summer and heavier ones can keep you warm in cooler weather or worn on the head or double as a blanket on an overnight flight.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

3. JOURNALS
I am a compulsive list-maker and have dozens of hard cover journals filled with notes, budget calculations, and lists. I don’t throw mine away either as I love to be able to look back and see where I was before and what items I’ve been able to check off my lists. I love getting them with fun colors or sayings on the cover and in a portable size so I can carry them everywhere I go, refer to them when needed or use them to jot down ideas for blog posts while waiting for the kids to rehearse or while at the dentist waiting room, for example. I carry my journals everywhere with me!
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

4. SCENTED CANDLES
I really enjoy fragrant aromas like eucalyptus, mint, lavender not just because they make your home, purse or body spell nice but because they have therapeutic effect as well. Depending on the scent, aromatherapy candles can lift the mood, energize or calm. I love burning scented candles burn during my blogging work day.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

5. SMART PHONE COVER
As a blogger, I am constantly with my smart phone in my hand, social media networking past posts, capturing images for future blog posts, sharing finds to my social media network, communicating with other writers or staff members and occasionally, fielding real telephone calls. It is an extension of me and therefore also a fashion accessory and conversation piece. Like this cassette tape iphone cover (above) always get people talking because many cannot remember the last time they saw a cassette tape and will ask me what I’m doing with one, not knowing it is just a cover.

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

6. PERFUME
Like I said, aromas are my thing, and like journals, a girl can never have too many bottles of perfume either. When you find a scent that works and sticks, get it and use that as your staple, but I love to also mix it up. Jessica McClintock works very well with my body chemistry and I always get compliments on it when I wear it. People cannot help but stop and tell me how good I smell and ask about the scent. I prefer sweeter scents like Versace‘s Red Jeans and Jean Paul Gaultier‘s Classique are also part of my go-to scents.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
HAPPY SHOPPING!

Jewish families integrate Christmas with Hannukah trees

Are you surprised that more and more Jewish families are adopting and putting up Hannukah bushes and trees, and even Menorah trees in their homes?

With Christmas being such a major celebrated holiday and season in the United States, many parents of Jewish children have found a way to meld the festivities with their own religious beliefs and culture.

More and more families are hanging Hannukah stockings, and integrating the traditional festival of lights with the customs of Christmas.

Miami Herald
A Pew Research survey released last year found that 32% of Jews said they had a Christmas tree in their home the previous year.
It’s common especially in interfaith families among Jews married to non-Jews.  The survey found that 71% said they put up a tree.
My mother is Roman Catholic and my father Muslim and he looked forward to decorating the tree and exchanging presents more than us kids even. Over the years, it could easily be argued that the Christmas season has become secular to a certain extent.
That’s exactly what those who are critical say.  The reason it’s easy for non-Christians to adopt Christmas traditions is because the holiday has become  an excuse to get caught up with the consumerism that has taken over Christmas. It has become less about the birth of Jesus Christ and more about an excuse to go crazy in the mall.
Your thoughts? If you are Jewish, have you or would you consider putting up a Hannukah tree?

Giving Tuesday: Our Charity Picks, plus a Donor App

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day created after the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzy periods to remind people that the holiday season is also about giving to those less fortunate as well.
#GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, and with a team of influencers and founding partners, the effort has since turned into a global movement that has engaged over 10,000 organizations worldwide.
On #GivingTuesday, the world congregates to encourage collective giving. It’s a day dedicated to promoting and mainstreaming philanthropy, whether it is giving to causes or volunteering.
Here are our suggestions for organizations to give to, as well as at least one tool to help you accomplish that.
The Shot at Life‘s fundraising campaign.
All monies raised today will support the UN and partners like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, collaborative work to combat pneumonia, one of the leading killers of children worldwide. For just $10 you can fully immunize a child from pneumococcal disease!
Because Ebola is still a global epidemic and with our founder and editor-in-chief JJ coming from Sierra Leone, West Africa, we will be donating to and encourage you to consider Africa Responds.
Even though the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Africa Union have pledged and mobilized millions of dollars towards equipment, supplies and health care workers to the affected nations, not enough it going to fight Ebola compared to other emergencies. Not enough is reaching local organizations who know where the needs are, who are most in need and how quickly and most efficiently to administer it.
Having worked and partnered with Afircare, a partner to Africa Responds, in the past, we are confident in its capabilities and capacity to quickly convert donor dollars into actionable sustainable aid.
AfricaResponds can do it.
As you’re considering where and how to give, there are various apps available to help facilitate it. We’re based in Washington DC and want to plug fellow DC-based tech start up GoodWorld which has an app that enables donors to easily and quickly donate to a cause or charity using the hashtag: #Donate.
A 2012 Red Cross poll found that if a friend posts about a donation, 39% would donate and 68% take the time to learn more.
The social network aspect of social media has positive impact for the philanthropic community.
To donate via Good World, simply choose one of their 30 partner charities such as No Kid Hungry, Humane Society International, or the Red Cross Los Angeles;
Visit Good World on Facebook and comment “#donate + any USD amount” (example: Awesome cause! I #donate $25”) on any post OR
Visit them on Twitter and tweet “#donate + any USD amount @partnercharity” (example: I #donate $50 @NoKidHungry).
You’ll get a link in a reply to register with GoodWorld, which will then charge your card and get you donation to the intended organisations.
Finally,  HelpMeSee (www.HelpMeSee.org) is a global campaign to eliminate cataract blindness endemic in developing countries. The HelpMeSee mission is to make sight-restoring, MSIC surgery available to millions of underserved people through financial support and the training of thousands of highly skilled specialist cataract surgeons recruited from within their communities.
HelpMeSee has designed and is now producing a virtual reality surgical simulator and training program to be implemented worldwide, adapted from extensive experience in simulator based aviation training.
Those who are interested in joining HelpMeSee’s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit givingtuesday.helpmesee.org
Thanks for your consideration!

6 celebrity couples who split up before baby was born

Bellyitch Rewind
I saw this smokin’ hawt photo of Christina Milian today and thought boy is her ex singer/ mega producer The Dream missing out. The couple was one of several celebrity pairs to split in the middle of a pregnancy and BEFORE the baby was born.
Christina Milian was 8 months pregnant when she filed for divorce from The Dream  in 2010.
Personally, I know of a few friends who wound up splitting with their boyfriend or spouse before having their baby and each of them say it was very challenging being pregnant and not at least having someone to help them through those challenging months. A few have said, in hindsight, they would’ve waited it out until baby was born. Oy! Here are four other celebrities who split before their child was born:
In 2004, four months before delivering her 1st child, son Leni, whose dad is billionaire Flavio Briatore, Heidi Klum started dated Seal, who she later married and had 3 kids with before they too split in 2012.
Rapper Nas and singer Kelis were in the middle of filming their MTV reality TV show when they split while she was 7 months pregnant with their first child together in 2009.
Alexis Knapp had to get Ryan Phillippe to submit to a paternity test to prove that the child she was carrying was his.  The two split before Knapp confirmed she was pregnant in 2010.
Ex Spice Girl Melanie Brown too had to force comedian/actor Eddie Murphy to submit to a paternity test to prove he was the father to her then-soon-to-be born daughter Angel Iris born ironically on Murphy’s 47th birthday, April 3, 2007.  The couple had split in 2006 and back then there was no way of proving paternity until the baby was born.
No one knows for sure who the dad is to Mad Men star January Jones’ first child, son Xander, but she announced she was pregnant in May 2011, five months after splitting with her boyfriend Saturday Night Live‘s  Jason Sudeikis. Rumors swirled that Ashton Kutcher may have been the dad. The two are good  friends.

Edited to Add: I found this post of 12 Celebrities that broke up before the baby was born that Crushable did a year ago which also includes Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen, Tom Brady and Bridget Moynahan, Mary Louise Parker and Billy Crudup and Tiki and Ginny Barber which I so would have added to this list had I remembered about them too!
