Bellyitch’s Top 5 Babymoon Destination Recommendations

Much is said about the importance of new parents getting a babymoon in before the delivery of a newborn, especially for first time parents who may be woefully unprepared for the drastic and dramatic shift in their lives to come. I don’t believe they were en vogue when I was first pregnant, but if I could go back in time and do it again, these would be my top 5 destinations and why:
1. La Jolla Cove, California- This quaint Orange County city is an absolutely fab place to get away to for several reasons.  It’s near the water and provides a wonderful place to have a late evening picnic or to watch the sun rise or set. It boasts a generous amount of day spas for getting a pregnancy massage or a couple’s massage. It has lovely restaurants, boutique shops and brand name exclusive shops along the main boulevard. It’s moments away from bustling down town San Diego where you can find a live band in any genre playing at the varying pubs, clubs, nightspots and hangouts there. Highly rated. I loved going there on my one year wedding anniversary and would highly recommend it as a baby moon destination. If I could live my life over again, I’d apply to get into the University of San Diego which is near this town. Yeah. I love this area that much.
2. Saint Marteen and Saint Martin, West Indies. This twin island which is a Dutch property to the South and French one to the north provides visitors all the pleasures of vacationing in Europe but with the extra plus of being in a warm tropical hotspot surrounded by water. The few times I’ve visited, I was able to escape to the the North and take in the villas of the French side or walk into a bakery and greeted by the shopkeeper telling me “Bon Soir” just as if I were in Nice. I could also appreciate the wonderful international flavor of its multicultural population. Locals speak over 8 different languages and as you walk from one block to the next you are bound to hear people talking in different tongues. On the Dutch side, there is gambling and  haggling. St. Maarten is known as one of THE best places to get a deal on jewelry.  Then for an added bonus, for the fee of the price of a tiny ferry, you can take a day trip over to the even tinier island of Anguilla, a famous and often visited getaway for many A-list celebrities because of how secluded the villas and rented mansions are. It’s a great place to go to really get away and loaf on a quite beach. Love Love it!
3. Las Vegas, Nevada– You wouldn’t ordinarily think this is a wonderful place for a pregnant woman to go especially since many people smoke at the various casinos that litter that town. However, to the contrary, there is a variety of entertainment options offering from Cirque du Soleil to Vegas show girl caberets to world class concerts from music industry legends. Prince, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion and others all headlined major nightly shows there. Even if you go there for a weekend, you’re bound to take in a lot of sights and entertainment. And every time I go, I notice a brand new “it” hotel to supplant the one that was the hottest only a few years prior. Don’t sleep on Vegas as a baby moon option. You can’t get knocked up twice. So what happens in Vegas can stay in Vegas.
4. Paris, France – It’s not called the city of love for nothing. The museums, cultural sights, restaurants and shopping make this an ideal destination for any occasion. It may be a long while after baby comes that you will be comfortable either traveling with a baby, small child or children or okay leaving the kids for a Paris trip. While you have the opportunity, it may be a great time to take  this sojourn across the ocean and to Europe.

5.  Local Bed and Breakfast – Because not everyone has the budget, time away from work option or interest in traveling too far from family or the doctor or delivery hospital while pregnant, taking advantage of a quick weekend getaway to a nearby inn, bed and breakfast or hotel could do! There are sometimes specials on sites like GroupOn, LivingSocial and other sites that can be taken advantaged of and it saves the cost of car rental and air flight. You can plan to catch a play, movie or head to a local lounge or nightclub in the day and then order in, watch movies, chill by the hotel pool and vege at night. It’s a great option for those who already have kids and want some quiet time alone.
All these options are wonderful for mom and for dad who may have had to deal with an irritable, irate and demanding wife for nearly 9 months. Getting away on a baby moon gives couples that time to reconnect and rededicate their love one last time before the restless nights begin with a new baby!
Enjoy!

20 Last Minute Things to do before Baby Arrives

Are you in your last month of pregnancy and flustered about what you need to do and worry if you have the time? No fret, cousin JJ is here to give you a checklist of crap you need to haul ass and get done.
A list should ease the stress:
What to Pack in the Baby Bag:
1. A warm and comfortable blanket but one you don’t mind getting ruined with all the juices, balms and secretions that accompany labor. It won’t be the same after. errrr.
2.  Mint or lollipops – You may be restricted from eating. The sugar in the lollipop can help curb hunger pangs and keep you from stink breath. Stink breath is no bueno.
3. Lip balm – You may get dehydrated. Keep your lips moisturized. I like ESOS!
4. Moisturizer – Get a very thick tube of moisturizer. I recommend Aquaphor because you don’t need a lot to do the trick.
5. Smart phone camera or digital camera – No explanation necessary
6. A couple pair of granny undies – But no more because you will get the mesh disposable undies plenty at the hospital. You can even take home extras the nurses bring in your room. They’re the best!
7. Baby going home outfit – This is the outfit you dress baby in when the hospital photography company comes by.
8. Gifts for the nurses – Some go above and beyond to make your short stay pleasant. Purchase a box of candy, or a mini spa kit or a journal or cards. I love Steep Seep’s Grapefruit Bergamot gift set which costs under $20!
9. Music – have a playlist of soothing music on a CD or on your phone’s portable speaker that you can plug in and help you calm down and get through a long labor.
10. Breast pad – You may leak so breast-pads and some Lansinoh Nipple Cream may come in handy for cracked or sore nipples from nursing.
LAST MINUTE NESTING
11. Get the carpets cleaned and get rid of any cat or dog hair and other allergens.
12. Create a music playlist for labor and delivery.
13. Buy all the creams, lotions, medicines, and miscellaneous  items you need for yourself and baby.
14. Buy clear plastic containers to organize baby clothing, accessories, toys and a label maker
15. Organize baby’s clothes and label the bins: newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6months, 6 to 12 months.
16. Create a “call list” on your smart phone so your hubby, spouse or partner knows who to contact after you give birth.

LAST MINUTE GROOMING
You have to make sure you are presentable for labor and delivery, photos after baby arrives and just for feeling good about yourself and the end of the 40 week journey. Don’t know who said letting yourself go was okay during pregnancy, but they lied. If you feel fresh, clean, primmed and prepped, you will feel energetic and ready for pushing out that baby.
17. Get your nether regions waxed. You really don’t want doctors and nurses seeing your business looking like the Brazilian rain forest. Opt for a Brazilian wax instead. If it’s out of the budget, consider going with Nair Bikini removal gel which will not require you to use a razor and nick yourself, but be careful.
18. Wax your eyebrows. You’ll feel better and look great in the post birth pics. But if you’re going for the Anastasia the Russian Gladiator look, then no.
19. Get a Mani and Pedi – A mani because your hands will be in pics and you don’t want to cut baby with your hang nail. Not good.  A pedi because your toes may be in the air and/or in stirrups during the pushing stage and you don’t want to be embarrassed by crusty and ashy hammer toes in people’s faces.
20. Get a hair appointment and get your hair in braids and/or cornrows. You need a low maintenance style bc you will not have time to do your hair after baby arrives and braided styles look great in pics.

Bump Watch: Actress Alexis Fields counts down to baby number 2

We were stalking checking in on the ladies in our Bellyitch Bumpwatch list and discovered that actress Alexis Fields is really really close. (this time, we totally rushed it before). We know this because the former Nickelodeon star (Keenan and Kel,  The Secret World of Alex Mack) and mom-to-be has been tweeting how she’s on her last vile of patience pills while waiting for the arrival of her son.
“It’s about 85% pregnancy hormones and 1000% how I always feel but just don’t say cause I’m classy, Lmbo” the former child star recently tweeted.  Right before that, she suggested:

Yikes! Too funny! Hang in there mama.

She’s also been sharing pics of the pregnancy and baby prep with her followers and fans on her Instagram account.

But look at this fabulousness of a maternity look. Face is beat! Posing near a friend whose project she participated in recently.

Already blessed with daughter Kaycie (born in 2008), with her husband of several years, Fields shared photos of her baby’s nursery space.

She went creative with the baby’s bedding writing in a caption to this Instagram share, “Buy Buy Baby for $10. Cribskirt- Pottery Barn Kids. Faux Fur blanket- World Market. #ChicBaby #DareToBeDifferent”

We are also Love Loving this photo of her husband, shared on Father’s Day, of him hooking up their daughter’s hair. Now that’s what’s up! Very nice. Go dads!
Fields, who comes from a Hollywood family that includes actress/producer sister Kim Fields (Facts of Life, Livin’ Single), Jere Fields (Friday the 13th, Gunsmoke, The Brady Brunch) and director, singer and actress mom Chip Fields (The Amazing Spider Man, The Lady in Red). announced her second pregnancy on Thanksgiving in 2013.

Celeb Review: Baby SebaMed does wonders for baby skin

We asked new 2nd-time mom, Grammy-nominated World Music songstress Wayna to test out the new Baby Sebamed, a dermatologist-developed line of baby washes, creams, shampoos and more available at Duane Reade, Walgreens and SebamedUSA.com among other location. (product supplied by company for review)
The singer-songwriter gave birth to her second child with husband tech entrepreneur Kyle Stephen, another daughter Zema, last month.
The results were a glowing review. Here is what the mom to 3-year old daughter, Beza, and much buzzed-about singer-songwriter had to say:

My pediatrician advised that no product would resolve my baby’s flaking skin. “This top layer of the epidermis will replace itself in the first few days,” he said, and “no amount of lotion or oil will remove the flakiness.” For the most part, he was right. I tried a few different lotions and oils, and after an hour or so, the flakiness returned.

The brand philosophy of the Baby SebaMed line, however, is to replicate how the skin naturally heals itself. And with their lotion, my daughter’s skin looked and felt quite healthy, even as it underwent the process my doctor described. Moreover, it never felt or appeared over moisturized, and the effects far outlasted any of the other products I tried.

But more immediate than how the products seemed to help in healing was their smell and feel. The aroma is unique and sweet, but still subtle. And while I couldn’t have imagined my baby’s skin feeling any softer, with the Baby SebaMed bubble bath, it did. Just a few drops of it is enough, and even fewer of the lotion which is lite but still dense.

My only complaint with the SebaMed line is that my newborn is so totally soothed after her baths that I barely have enough time to dab on the lotion before she’s fussing from wanting to sleep. Any product that helps me accomplish that will certainly stay in my pantry, far longer than ‘the first day’, as their slogan suggests.

Great review! Thanks for sharing.

5 celebrities welcoming their 5th baby (How does it Equal 15 parents tho?)

FIVE is the number for this FIFTH day of the work week for some celebrity birth and pregnancy stories around the web involving baby number FIVE.

But in this era of blended families and separation and divorce so common, there are 15 parents in this story. Read on:
After welcoming 4 daughters, country singer Zac Brown and his wife Shelly finally welcomed their 5th child, a son, this week on May 5th! The couple are parents to 3-year old Joni Mason, 4 1/2 year old Georgia Slone, 5 1/2 year old Lucy and 7-year old Justice. In 2011, after Joni was born, Brown joked that he planned to keep on trying until he got his boy. I guess Shelly was down for the plan! (smile)
Meanwhile, Bruce Willis and his wife model Emma Heming-Willis welcomed their second child, daugher  Evelyn Penn Willis, also on May 5th they are parents to 2-year old Mabel Ray. And this is Willis’ 5th child as he is dad to 20-year old Tallulah, 20, 22-year old Scout, 22, and 25-year old Rumer with Demi Moore.
[Side note: Demi’s other ex Ashton Kutcher is reportedly expecting his first kid too with fiance Mila Kunis]
Finally, shortly after announcing that she is pregnant with her fifth child, British TV personality and model Katie Price announced to split with her hubby Kieran Hayler who is dad to their 8-month old son together Jett Riviera.  The couple married last January 2013 after dating only a few months.
This will be Price’s 5th child.  She has three other children with exes Peter Andre and Dwight Yorke: 12-year old Harvey, 12, 8-year old Junior and 6-year old Princess.
Also across the pond, singer Kerry Katonia  of Atomic Kitten welcomed her fifth baby with her beau George Kay Kerry is already a mother to three daughters and one son, to her past husbands Brian McFadden and Mark Croft.
Also, this week Donald Trump Jr.‘s wife Vanessa tweeted that she has FIVE weeks left until she welcomes her 5th child. The Trumps, who have been married for 8 years are parents to 6-year old Kai, 4-year old Donald III,  2-year old Tristan and 15-months old Spencer.
Was our math right? Did you count 15 parents too?

Celeb Review: The VTech Safe & Sound Video & Audio Baby Monitor

We asked new 2nd-time mom, Grammy-nominated World Music songstress Wayna to test out the new VTEch Safe & Sound® Pan & Tilt Full-Color Video & Audio Monitor (retail: $129.99) shortly after giving birth to her second child, daughter Zema,  last month with husband Kyle Stephen. The results were a glowing review.
Here is what the mom to 3-year old daughter, Beza, and much buzzed-about singer-songwriter had to say:

“When I had my first child 4 years ago, a video monitor was the first baby shower item I asked my loved ones to splurge on.

Hearing my newborn daughter on a traditional monitor  wasn’t enough, I wanted the assurance of watching her — of seeing first hand if her swaddle had come undone or if her back was arched from gas bubbles or if her face revealed whether the noises coming from her nursery were sweet baby dreams or the early signs of a cry for food. The more information I had, the better, and the better I could care for her while peacefully carrying out whatever multi-task I was busy doing.

When I hooked up my fancy video monitor with the even fancier price tag, I was surprised to see that the video feed was nothing like the image on the box. Sadly, it looked more like an infrared video than a TV commercial. But I was even more disappointed when the unit broke after only a few weeks use. Granted, it was tipped off the edge of the crib, but it was only one drop and had landed on double-padded carpet!

Given this experience, my expectations when trying out the V Tech video monitor were measured.

I was surprised, however, to find that all my previous hopes were fulfilled in this device and then some.  I was impressed by the perfectly clear, color TV-like video feed; the ability to adjust the camera angle from the receiver to get the best possible view if the baby had moved; the battery-saving mode that enables you to leave the receiver unplugged for longer; the amplified sound that, like a rear view mirror, makes voices appear louder than they are, helping you get to the scene of an accident before it actually happens; and finally and probably best of all, the ability to convert your video monitor into a walkie talkie and converse with someone in the nursery.

On the subject of durability, my toddler knocked the V Tech video monitor over at least 3 times on hard wood floor, and it still functions perfectly!

With all this functionality, flexibility, and extra features, the question isn’t should you buy the V Tech monitor and use it in your nursery. The question is: will it work in a college dormitory? To be determined!

How fun! Thanks Wayna for a great review! We’re gonna have to give that a try with our little ones around here.

Twitter

Kelly Clarkson has been laying low recently while she waits for her baby to be born.
We totally missed her at the Academy of Country Music Awards held this Sunday.
The last photo she shared of her bump in social media was this past Valentines’ Day on February 14.
Most recently, on March 7th, the former American Idol season 1 winner started feeling her baby move.
“Okay my baby is moving like crazy in my belly this morning,” she tweeted. “Such a cool yet weird feeling.”

6 Things to consider when buying your baby’s crib

For many expecting parents, visions of pastel, color-coordinated nurseries dance alongside mounds of fluffy pillows and luxurious baby bedding. Unfortunately, these bedding sets are almost always more stylish than safe, and in some cases they can be downright dangerous. There are some guidelines that new parents should adhere to when choosing a crib and bedding for their upcoming bundle of joy, making sure that certain requirements are met and dangers avoided before Baby’s first slumber in her new nursery.

  1.     Avoid SIDS by Eschewing Soft Bedding – The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends that new parents eschew all crib bedding apart from a fitted sheet for the first twelve months of their baby’s life. Opting for wearable blankets rather than loose blankets and placing babies on their backs to sleep with no pillows or plush toys can prevent the risk of suffocation. If you do choose to use a blanket in your infant’s crib, the Consumer Product Safety Commission suggests positioning your baby so that her feet are touching the bottom rails of her crib, tucking the blanket in at the bottom and sides of the mattress, and only pulling the blanket up to her chest. Keep in mind that babies can overheat much more easily than adults, and you should use only lightweight blankets to ensure that she stays warm.
  2.     Make Sure Your Mattress Fits Tightly in the Crib – Your baby’s crib mattress should be firm, not soft, to help reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and suffocation. It should also fit tightly into the crib to prevent suffocation or entrapment between the mattress and the crib’s sides. Ideally, you should be able to fit no more than two fingers between the side of the mattress and the frame of the crib. The surface of the mattress shouldn’t conform to an adult hand when pressed into the mattress, and it should snap back into place as soon as the hand is removed.
  3.     Forgo the Antiques – The ornate, antique crib used by three generations of your family might be a beautiful piece of furniture, and every child that used it may have survived their infancy, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a safe choice. In addition to the unlikelihood of slats and bars being properly spaced on very old cribs, they may also feature drop sides, which have been banned, and even a layer or two of lead-based paint. Let good sense trump sentimentality, and choose a new crib that adheres to modern safety standards.
  4.     If You Do Choose Decorative Bedding, Play it Smart – If you simply can’t bear the idea of skipping the magazine layout-worthy crib bedding to show off Baby’s nursery to the fullest, be smart about your decision and make sure that the fitted sheet is snug, thin, and breathable. When it’s time to put your baby down, be sure to pull every pillow, stuffed toy, comforter and any other soft objects out of the crib first. Parents determined to have a nursery ready for photographs as well as a lowered risk of their baby suffering from SIDS, suffocation, or injury are forced to compromise in just such a manner, but can have the best of both worlds by playing it safe and smart.
  5.     Do Your Homework About Crib Bumpers – The city of Chicago has banned the sale of crib bumpers altogether, with advocacy groups across the country crying out for similar bans on a national level. Parents are largely divided into two camps these days: pro-bumper and anti-bumper. If you fall into the former, be sure to research the subject thoroughly and apprise yourself of all the risks before tying those bumpers onto Baby’s crib; namely, the risk of suffocation and the impediment of air flow in the crucial area at your baby’s face level on all four sides of her crib. Also, don’t be fooled into thinking that bumpers are safe once the threat of SIDS has largely passed; older babies and young toddlers have been known to use bumpers as a means of climbing out of their cribs, leading to messy falls and giving them access to dangerous situations. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have given crib bumpers a thumbs-down, so it might be wise to think twice before springing for those adorable but potentially-deadly accessories.
  6.     Do a Recall Check – Before purchasing nursery furniture or bedding, make sure that you check for any recalls; repeat these checks regularly after you’ve made your purchase as well to ensure that safety hazards haven’t been discovered since the last time you looked. The Consumer Product Safety Commission website is a great resource for recall information.
