Judge rules unmarried women don’t have to let their baby’s daddy in delivery room

In an unprecedented decision, a New Jersey judge made a ruling on the telephone just as a woman was giving birth stating that she did not have to permit the biological father of the soon-to-be-born child in the delivery room.
Citing hospital patients rights to extreme privacy, Superior Court Judge Sohail Mohammed said women had the right to decide who is by their bedside during labor and delivery.
In this case, Rebecca DeLuccia had gotten pregnant by her boyfriend Steven Plotnick last year before the two engaged but later called off the wedding.
Of course, some fathers’ rights groups are going bananas over this ruling. Equally upset are perhaps advocates for unmarried women and men as the ruling does not apply for married couples.
In the United States currently, over 40% of births occur outside of marriage and a recent report noted how the millennial generation is more and more deciding that marriage is not for them so we could see more
This is the first of its kind but has widespread implications nationwide and could affect different groups.
You can find an in depth treatment and analysis of the ruling over at Nj.com HERE!
What do you think? Should moms-to-be get to lock out their child’s father if they are no longer together? Do dads have the right to witness their child come into the world?

Kim Kardashian and Ciara do newborn shopping (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

We missed this but wanted to share some pics of Ciara and Kim Kardashian coming out of a Bel Bambini store last month. CiCi and Kim have been friends for several years and the Body Party singer has appeared on several episodes of Keeping up with the Kardashians.

This outing is also ripe for mom to 7-month old daughter North with Kanye West.  Kim and her sisters Khloe and Kourtney, who has a one-year old daughter Penelope and 3-year old son Mason, are said to be designing a line of baby clothes.

We have featured the store in the past as THE destination for pregnant celebrities and given this week’s revelation from Ciara’s fiance Future about his woman’s obsessive nesting and baby-prepping, it’s appropriate to share today even though we’ve changed blog policy to avoid featuring images taken by dangerous stalking unwilling photography subjects.
Just this once! Enjoy!

Report: Doctors cured a Second HIV Baby

A second baby born with the AIDS virus may have had her infection put into remission and possibly cured by very early treatment — in this instance, four hours after birth.
Doctors revealed the case Wednesday at an AIDS conference in Boston. The girl was born in suburban Los Angeles last April, a month after researchers announced the first case from Mississippi.
That case was a medical first that led doctors worldwide to rethink how fast and hard to treat infants born with HIV. The California doctors followed that example.
The Mississippi baby is now 3 1/2 and seems HIV-free despite no treatment for about two years. The Los Angeles baby is still getting AIDS medicines, so the status of her infection is not as clear.
A host of sophisticated tests at multiple times suggest the LA baby has completely cleared the virus, said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a Johns Hopkins University physician who led the testing. The baby’s signs are different from what doctors see in patients whose infections are merely suppressed by successful treatment, she said.
“We don’t know if the baby is in remission … but it looks like that,” said Dr. Yvonne Bryson, an infectious disease specialist at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA who consulted on the girl’s care.
Doctors are cautious about suggesting she has been cured, “but that’s obviously our hope,” Bryson said.
Most HIV-infected moms in the U.S. get AIDS medicines during pregnancy, which greatly cuts the chances they will pass the virus to their babies. The Mississippi baby’s mom received no prenatal care and her HIV was discovered during labor. So doctors knew that infant was at high risk and started her on treatment 30 hours after birth, even before tests could determine whether she was infected.

Actor Michael Ealy reveals he and wife had secret baby

While promoting his latest film About Last Night which opens today on the Steve Harvey Show, hunky actor Michael Ealy revealed for the first time publicly that he is already a father.
Ealy, who stars in the 1986 Rob Lowe/Demi Moore chick flick remake, replied to Harvey’s question about married life replied, “We have a son.”
Surprise!!
“I never understand why people announce the birth of their children,” the actor who currently stars in the action TV show Almost Human added.
Um… because there is a very active, alive and interested following of people who love and follow these things, son. ugh!
Ealy and wife Khatira Rafiqzada quietly married in October 2012 to no fanfare and announcement so  it should come as no surprise.
Not to name drop but to name drop, I was born the same year as Ealy and attended college with him at the University of Maryland at the same time and vividly remember him hanging out in our student union building. He is close friends with some of my friends. He was a very quiet character back then too so….
Congrats! Aint parenthood grande? And yes, he told Steve that it has changed him tremendously.
Awwww. Ealy starred in the hit movie Act Like a Man Think Like a Woman which was an adaptation of Harvey’s best selling book. Loved Sleeper Cell, the Showtime mini-series which earned Ealy a Golden Globe nomination in playing an undercover cop who thwarts a major terrorist plot.
About Last Night  also stars Joy Bryant (who I LOVE and who starts in one of my favorite shows Parenthood) and the “it” comedian and star  Kevin Hart.

Just leaving THIS here in case you’d like to stalk Ealy videos on YouTube promoting the movie and previous projects.

Newly Catholic Dominique Dawes is expecting a baby girl, talks pregnancy, Sochi & her husband (EWTN VIDEO)

Ten-year US Olympic Women Gymnastics team member and Olympic Gold-medalist Dominique Dawes opened up about her career and life to Catholic TV network EWTN’s Raymond Arroyo this week.
The mom-to-be, who is a newly converted Catholic and is weeks from delivering her first child, said she considers herself a mommy right now and  is learning to change her previously perfectionist ways.
“I’m learning to ‘Let go and Let God”,’ the 1996 US Olympic Women’s Floor Exercise Bronze champion said on the show World Over. “I’m learning to not focus on being a perfectionist and I’m learning to just relax and not set these unrealistic expectations… It’s been a struggle for me.”
She added, “you do really need to put pride and your ego aside at times and learn to accept sometimes that ‘good’ is sometimes ‘good enough.'”

Dawes revealed that although she seemed calm and poised while performing on the world stage, she was battling self-doubt and was a pessimist, but knew how to “fake it til you make it.” Her teammates, fans and family kept her going though inside she was quite a “nervous Ninny,” she said.”It was calming myself, getting at peace, affirmations,” she said of what helped propel her to success when visualization techniques didn’t work.

“I created a motto for myself as a young child. I called it D3: Determination, Dedication, Desire, so I would repeat these affirmations and even scriptures like Phillipians 4:13, ‘through all things God who strengthens me'” Dawes said. “Whenever those moments of doubt or negative thoughts would come in, I would push it out with these words.”

Dawes, who was the first African American woman to win an individual Olympics gymnastics medal, added that pregnancy is scary but it’s something she has always desired. Before admitting that she felt she was “called” to be a gymnast, she said she’s open to her new role as a mom.
“Right now, my child is very much in control and I’ve always known that God is in control so it’s just me learning to let go and to embrace this experience and embrace the fact that I have a new and different body,” she said, adding that she is learning to “embrace the emotional roller coast” she has gone through as a pregnant woman and embrace what is going to happen when she becomes a new mom.”
Dawes, who shared on the show that she is an introvert, revealed back on December 10 on her Instagram account that she is expecting a baby girl.
Instagram
“I wanted to introduce my baby girl to a place I will always cherish. Olympic Park…17 yrs after making history,” she captioned this Instagarm photo during a trip to Atlanta’s Centennial Park last December. ” Fond memories!”

Since spilling the beans about being pregnant in a big way this past December, Dawes has been more open about her personal  life.

Dawes married The Heights School’s religion teacher and adviser Jeff Thompson last Spring.

Dawes and a Potomac, Maryland religion teacher Jeff Thompson married 9 days after Dawes joined the Catholic church last year 2013 during the Easter Vigil. Dawes was born Baptist but joined the faith of her late paternal grandmother who was a Piscataway tribe member, she told Arroyo.

And though that wasn’t public news, the petite mom-to-be mentioned him last week while watching The Gabby Douglas Story on Lifetime last week for the first time EVER, tweeting:
And during the EWTN interview she revealed that she changed her stance about not wanting her child to become a gymnast after visiting a venue and seeing teenie tiny leotards and telling her husband who she said is 6 foot 3 that she couldn’t wait to put their daughter in that.
Though she is open to the fact that having a tall husband may make it so they won’t have a “gymnastics-shaped” child. Funny!
Despite all the buzz about terrorist threats with the current Olympic Winter Games in Russia, Dawes said if she were an athlete she would go to the Olympics game in Sochi.  Dawes competed at the Atlanta games which was marred by a bombing on July 26, 1996 which claimed a life and injured over a hundred people, but still.
Given how long you’ve trained, since a child, most athletes wouldn’t walk away from a competition over threats, she said.
Watch the complete enlightening video from the segment on YouTube here:

Personal note: I’m thinking Dawes is my sister from another mother (and father). We both converted to Catholicism late in life within a year of becoming a mother for the first time, as an adult after marrying Catholic men. We  both went to the University of Maryland at College Park.  We both have a Type-A personality, are both 5 foot 3 inches tall but married men who are 6 feet 3 and both are entrepreneurial business women. Twinsies! 🙂  I just need to go get an Olympic medal and the circle would be complete! LOL!

8 tips for baby-proofing the Kitchen

Bringing a new baby home from the hospital is an eye-opening experience for first-time parents’, showing them a new world of lurking dangers that went entirely unseen while the house was inhabited solely by adults. Knowing that your tiny bundle of joy will be crawling, and then walking, is what makes the chore of childproofing seem like a fairly urgent one. The truth is, there’s no time too early to childproof, even if your newborn is still learning to focus their eyes; kids grow up quickly, and it’s better to be well-prepared in advance than have the need for childproofing measures present themselves after your pride and joy has already had a mishap.

  1. Place Safety Gates at Entrances – Whenever feasible, it’s best to keep babies out of the kitchen altogether. This holds especially true for times when you’re not in the kitchen to supervise, and placing baby safety gates at all entrances keeps a crawling baby or shambling toddler from slipping into this household danger zone without the knowledge of an adult.
  2. Install Cabinet Locks – Aside from the dangerous substances, utensils, and other items that are often stored in lower cabinets, there is also a very real risk of injured hands and fingers. Should tiny digits be smashed by a cabinet door they could very easily be injured more severely than you might imagine; to prevent this and accidental poisoning by household chemicals, install a set of cabinet locks on all lower cabinet doors.
  3. Consider a Drawer Guide System – Toddlers are usually just tall enough to open a drawer and close it again, though they may not have enough height to peek inside at the contents. Still, drawers can slam on small fingers too, inflicting painful damage to their fragile fingers. Installing a drawer guide system designed to insure that drawers close softly and smoothly every time might help to reduce this risk.
  4. Invest in Electrical Outlet Plates – The small, translucent plastic outlet covers that most adults remember from their own childhoods are still commercially available; they do, however, present a choking hazard and can also be quickly figured out by observant toddlers. Kids learn by mimicking adults, so it won’t take too many instances of watching you remove an outlet cover before using it for your child to grasp the concept. Since small outlet covers may not be ideal, it might be wise to consider full outlet plates that cover both sockets and immediately slide back into place after use.
  5. Install an Oven Lock – Ovens can be purchased with a factory installed lock, but if your oven doesn’t have one you can purchase after-market varieties that can be installed on your existing oven as well. This will prevent curious little hands from landing themselves in the emergency room with severe burns. They’re not always the most attractive feature in a kitchen, but sacrificing style in the interest of your baby’s safety is perennially en vogue.
  6. Move Cleaners and Other Chemicals to Higher Ground – Installing cabinet locks is a wise idea because they can keep kids from pinching their fingers or accessing dangerous items inside. However, parents can’t rely solely upon a cabinet lock to keep determined pint-sized investigators out, so it’s advised that all cleaning fluids and other potentially harmful chemicals be moved to upper cabinets, way out of kids’ reach
  7. Stow Away the Garbage Can – While a rational adult would assume that the off-putting odor of a garbage can would be repellent enough on its own, there’s something about the refuse heap that captures kids’ curiosity. To keep your baby or toddler out of the smelly, dirty, and bacteria-laden trash, move the can to a cabinet or invest in a model with a childproof lid.
  8. Train Yourself to Unplug Small Appliances – Unplugging a small appliance, like a blender, mixer, or toaster, can be a difficult thing for new parents to remember; after all, adults know the very real risk that dropping these items in a sink full of water presents. Small children may not be able to grasp this concept for a while, however, so it’s advised that new and even expecting parents get themselves accustomed to the idea of doing just that to prevent tragic accidents.

The Most Decorated Female Olympic Track Star Allyson Felix and All the Moms

This one is for the moms!

United States Olympic sprinter Allyson Felix just won her 10th Olympic medal becoming the most decorated female athlete in all time! And she did so after giving birth to her first child, Camryn, and fighting back naysayers who counted her out since she became a mom!

The 35-year-old California native ran blind, situated in the less favored lane 9, and accelerated fast enought to win the bronze medal in the women’s 400 meters on Friday. She ran a season-best at 49.46 seconds and did so wearing her own brand of shoes, Saysh.

Defending Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas was the gold medalist in a lifetime best 48.36 seconds, and Marileidy Paulino of Dominican Republic the silver medalist; her 49.20 clocking was also a lifetime best.

With today’s medal Felix broke a tie with Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey, who has nine medals. She has also tied the legend Carl Lewis for the most medals by an American track and field athlete.

Felix parted with her longtime sponsor Nike after pushing back publicly about the athletic company’s battles with atheletes who return to the field after having a baby. She eventually created her own line.

Per Vogue

Felix gave birth to her daughter, Camryn, in 2018, and she has since been candid about her recovery and struggles while returning to training. In 2019, she broke up with her then sponsor Nike due to the circumstances related to her childbirth, sharing in a powerful New York Times op-ed that she faced a 70% pay cut in her sponsorship because of it. “During my pregnancy, I faced a gender injustice that I couldn’t run from,” she tells Vogue. “My employer [Nike] did not support my maternity in a way that I could be proud of.” With no big shoe sponsor this year, Felix decided to take matters into her own hands. But instead of finding the right performance shoe, she decided to channel her frustrations into creating an athleisure sneaker under her new brand, Saysh.

Felix competed in the finals with teammate Quanera Hayes who skated into the last round of the 400M competition on her time but came in 7th. At the Olympic Trials this year, her son Demetrius and Camryn met and hugged.

She is part of a long line of moms who had to fight stereotypes about our ability to perform at the top level in sports, come back after giving birth and generally multitask!

US Marathoner Aliphine Tuliamuk appealed to the IOC which had intially banned her from bringing her nursing newborn along to Japan. Amidst outcry from the world, she won and was able to take her daughter Zoe!
