Here’s How to Make Baby Food Using a Blender

baby care

As concerns about genetically modified produce and dangerous farming practices escalate, and controversy surrounding Monsanto become more common, the number of parents committed to – or at least considering the practice of – making their own baby food is also on the rise. There are also parents who would love to provide their baby with organically grown, preservative- and additive-free foods, but are under the misconception that the process is a long and laborious one. In fact, making baby food from locally or organically grown fruits and vegetables is surprisingly simple.

The Price Factor

Any parent who’s seen the expensive systems advertised for making and storing baby food at home could easily be fooled into thinking that the process is not only a difficult or time-consuming one, but also an incredibly pricey option. The truth is, those systems are only more convenient than the tools you already have in your kitchen, if that, and they are by no means necessary to create fresh, nutritious food of verifiable origins for your bundle of joy. With nothing more than a pot, a knife, a cutting board, fresh produce, and a blender, you can be on the path to becoming an in-demand chef for the smaller set. Because saving money by making healthful food for your baby rather than paying more for processed jarred food is one of the many selling points of taking on the task, spending a small fortune on an entire system with all the bells and whistles is unnecessary.

Storage

Buying a fully-stocked homemade baby food system brings a set of storage containers to the party, but there are several storage options at your disposal that will work just as well in conjunction with the blender you already have. Rather than purchasing a space-hogging, pricey system, take advantage of the variety of storage solutions available to you for a fraction of the cost.

For frozen foods, simply prepare an item in accordance with your chosen recipe, and allow it to cool. Spoon the pureed food into ice cube trays and freeze them until they’re solid, then pop the cubes out and into carefully labeled freezer bags. Foods can then be defrosted in just the amount you need, eliminating waste and allowing you to make food in large batches when you have free time, rather than scrambling to make baby food every day. Small storage bowls are widely and readily available in the market today, and are also suitable for baby food storage. Just be sure that any plastic containers you purchase are BPA free in order to avoid any potential health risks.

Tips for Making the Most Out of Your Blender

Because small batches of food tend to be pushed to the sides of a blender carafe and missed by the blades, your blender is most effective as a method of pureeing baby food when you’re working with a fairly substantial amount of food. This small drawback is eliminated, however, by setting aside an afternoon to make and freeze enough food for a few weeks. Properly stored in airtight freezer containers, your baby food will have a shelf life of up to three months.

Blenders are also great at liquefying solid foods, which means that it’s important to keep a close eye on food that’s being pureed in a blender, lest it become a very thin soup. Always use the pulse button for maximum control over the texture and consistency of the food; using even a low continuous setting could turn your perfectly prepared produce into something more akin to a juice if you’re distracted from the running blender for a moment. With children in the house, there’s constant potential for distraction, so use the pulse button and watch carefully. Remember to scrape down the sides of the blender carafe regularly as well to ensure a uniform texture with few lumps.

Immersion or Stick Blenders

Parents that are lucky enough to have an immersion or stick blender in their kitchen are in an even better position to make their own baby food with less hassle. Rather than transferring cooked food to a blender carafe to puree and then moving it to containers for storage, food can be blended in the cooking vessel and dished straight into storage containers for easy clean-up. Just be sure to avoid scraping the sides or bottom of a non-stick pot with an immersion blender that doesn’t feature housing or guards to prevent flakes of Teflon from ending up in your baby’s carefully prepared, all-natural organic baby food.

Molly Sims Does Another cute Balloon Gender Reveal for Baby #3

Molly Sims - Mixed Makeup - photographs by Erica Hampton

Expectant mom Molly Sims revealed her baby’s gender in a cute little YouTube video she released this week.

In the video that she posted on her website, the former model is shown with her 4-year old son Brooks Alan and 19-month old daughter opening up a box filled with balloons that are either pink or blue.

When they lift the top, blue balloons float out so…she is having a boy! Later in the video, her kids are seen painting her belly with blue finger paint.

Sims told the kids they are “going to have a baby brother.” She went on to say that Brooks has already named the baby “Jack and the Bean Stalk-Batman” and that it’s been “really sweet to see him so involved.”

Also, this week the 43-year old stepped out on Thursday, November 10, in a cute H&M print midi dress as she headed off shopping to Barneys New York in Beverly Hills California.

In August, Sims announced her third pregnancy with husband, movie producer Scott Stuber. In another video posted on her website, the Las Vegas actress broke down talking about fertility struggles she had to conceive her first child which she welcomed at age 39 but we must say, having had 3 kids back to back after that, including an unplanned one, she’s over that hump

The “Everyday Supermodel” author has a tradition of big video gender reveals. Last January 2015, she had a big reveal for her then soon-to-be-born daughter. Lovely!

These 6 Tips will Help Your Newborn Sleep Through the Night

Bellyitch Rewind

baby sleep thru night

Every baby is different, so it’s only natural for some to have a more difficult time with nighttime sleep than others. Some babies take to it very well and at a very young age are able to sleep through the night with only the occasional wakeup. Others, however, require a lot of patience and guidance in order to get to point where they can sleep all night. But in every case, there are things parents can do to make things easier for the baby as well as for themselves.

If your baby has trouble sleeping through the night and you are ready to move to the next stage, here are a few tips that may help.

  1. Have a routine: To ease your little one into sleep, establish a nighttime routine that you follow without exception. This might include a bath, reading time, and the last feeding of the day. Do whatever works best for your family. Just make it consistent, and make sure it differs from other routines you have through the day.
  2. Discourage nighttime feeding: Very early on, it is perfectly natural for an infant to require several feedings during the night, and this can continue for many months if it is not too much trouble for the parents. But if are ready for better nighttime sleep and your child is old enough, you can begin phasing out these feedings. Keep track of how much your baby eats and how much she requires, and make sure she gets enough during the daytime hours while gradually lessening the nighttime feedings.
  3. Position the baby well: To minimize the risk of SIDS, most medical authorities recommend placing the baby on her back at bedtime for the first nine months of life (some recommend longer), and this advice is worth heeding. But when the baby gets old enough to move around at will, there is little you can do to control her position. The good news is that she will naturally find the position in which she is most comfortable and in which she will sleep best. So when your baby is old enough, give her the freedom to find her preferred positions.
  4. Try different outfits: If your baby seems to wake up a lot, this could be a sign of discomfort resulting from his sleep outfit. Try different things, and make sure you experiment with each item enough nights to draw a conclusion about whether your baby likes it or not.
  5. Control room conditions: Also try different conditions in the room where your baby sleeps. Perhaps he does well with a little bit of noise, in which case you can use a fan or a radio to make some gentle white noise. Also make sure you try different temperatures. Childcare experts generally recommend dressing babies a little more warmly than you would dress yourself, but this is not a blanket rule, and some babies tend to get hot in normal room-temperature conditions.
  6. Learn baby’s back-to-sleep habits: Watch your baby for several nights to see how she typically reacts when waking up in the middle of the night. If she wakes, fusses for a moment, and then goes back to sleep, make sure you allow her to do this instead of interrupting her natural process. On the other hand, if you can learn to recognize when she is unlikely to get herself back to sleep, you can get to her early and minimize the amount of time she is awake.

Good luck, new parents! We hope you get some rest…and baby too!

20 Last Minute Things to Do Before Baby Comes

Are you in your last month of pregnancy and flustered about what you need to do and worry if you have the time? No fret, cousin JJ is here to give you a checklist of crap you need to haul ass and get done.
A list should ease the stress:
What to Pack in the Baby Bag:
1. A warm and comfortable blanket but one you don’t mind getting ruined with all the juices, balms and secretions that accompany labor. It won’t be the same after. errrr.
2.  Mint or lollipops – You may be restricted from eating. The sugar in the lollipop can help curb hunger pangs and keep you from stink breath. Stink breath is no bueno.
3. Lip balm – You may get dehydrated. Keep your lips moisturized. I like ESOS!
4. Moisturizer – Get a very thick tube of moisturizer. I recommend Aquaphor because you don’t need a lot to do the trick.
5. Smart phone camera or digital camera – No explanation necessary
6. A couple pair of granny undies – But no more because you will get the mesh disposable undies plenty at the hospital. You can even take home extras the nurses bring in your room. They’re the best!
7. Baby going home outfit – This is the outfit you dress baby in when the hospital photography company comes by.
8. Gifts for the nurses – Some go above and beyond to make your short stay pleasant. Purchase a box of candy, or a mini spa kit or a journal or cards. I love Steep Seep’s Grapefruit Bergamot gift set which costs under $20!
9. Music – have a playlist of soothing music on a CD or on your phone’s portable speaker that you can plug in and help you calm down and get through a long labor.
10. Breast pad – You may leak so breast-pads and some Lansinoh Nipple Cream may come in handy for cracked or sore nipples from nursing.
LAST MINUTE NESTING
11. Get the carpets cleaned and get rid of any cat or dog hair and other allergens.
12. Create a music playlist for labor and delivery.
13. Buy all the creams, lotions, medicines, and miscellaneous  items you need for yourself and baby.
14. Buy clear plastic containers to organize baby clothing, accessories, toys and a label maker
15. Organize baby’s clothes and label the bins: newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6months, 6 to 12 months.
16. Create a “call list” on your smart phone so your hubby, spouse or partner knows who to contact after you give birth.

LAST MINUTE GROOMING
You have to make sure you are presentable for labor and delivery, photos after baby arrives and just for feeling good about yourself and the end of the 40 week journey. Don’t know who said letting yourself go was okay during pregnancy, but they lied. If you feel fresh, clean, primmed and prepped, you will feel energetic and ready for pushing out that baby.
17. Get your nether regions waxed. You really don’t want doctors and nurses seeing your business looking like the Brazilian rain forest. Opt for a Brazilian wax instead. If it’s out of the budget, consider going with Nair Bikini removal gel which will not require you to use a razor and nick yourself, but be careful.
18. Wax your eyebrows. You’ll feel better and look great in the post birth pics. But if you’re going for the Anastasia the Russian Gladiator look, then no.
19. Get a Mani and Pedi – A mani because your hands will be in pics and you don’t want to cut baby with your hang nail. Not good.  A pedi because your toes may be in the air and/or in stirrups during the pushing stage and you don’t want to be embarrassed by crusty and ashy hammer toes in people’s faces.
20. Get a hair appointment and get your hair in braids and/or cornrows. You need a low maintenance style bc you will not have time to do your hair after baby arrives and braided styles look great in pics.

Lauren London Had a Baby And NoOne Even Knew She was Pregnant

lauren london

Lauren London managed to keep an entire 9 months of pregnancy under wraps until announcing this Friday, September 16, 2016 that she and longtime beau, rapper,  Nipsey Hussle, welcomed a baby boy.

In the caption to a photo of her newborn son’s hand wrapped around her perfectly manicured hand, the ATL star dubbed herself the queen of the low key.

“And then came You,” she captioned the IG photo shared with her 2.7 Million followers. “Last week I gave birth to a beautiful healthy happy baby boy . Blessed.

#motheroftwo #GodisGood#QueenLowkey ??”

And the title is fitting given how The Perfect Match star has managed to keep her 7-year old son Kameron with rapper Lil Wayne out of the public eye for her son’s entire life.

Well, the pregnancy wasn’t’ an entire secret. Back in May, during a radio show, her ATL co-star accidentally released the news when answering a question about whether there was an ATL2 in the making.

“Aye man, we working on it presently,” T.I replied to the interviewer . “We got a couple obstacles in our way man. Like, uhhh, my lil sis man. She about to have a baby. So we gone have to let her get that time out of her system and you know when she back in ‘New New’ shape we’ll be ready to roll.”

Congrats!

Ed Hartwell Might Have Been Right About Waiting Before Having a Baby

hartwell and knight pulliam

Ex NFL player Ed Hartwell opened up recently about the reason he filed for divorce from his wife, child star Keisha Knight-Pulliam. During an exclusive with PageSix, he said that given their extremely short courtship of about a few months, he thought waiting longer to introduce a baby to the marriage was best.

“She wanted a baby really fast, and what I was trying to explain to her was that — from my beliefs, from seeing other successful people — that when you first get married, especially since we didn’t have a long courtship, that we should actually focus on each other and not just have a baby,” he said via Skype call with the gossip site.

The studies support him. Recent research states that couples that have courtships of 3 or more years are 39% less likely to get a divorce compared to those who date for 1 to 2 years; they are just 20% less likely to get a divorce. Couples that were together less than 6 months before marrying have the highest divorce rate.

“Couples who date for 3 years or more have better chances of staying together and a more stable marriage,” APlus summarized. “The findings mimic those of a 2006 study which found that couples who have dated less than 6 months before marriage had the highest divorce rate,”

Hartwell was also on point about spacing out babies. The average married couple in the United States wait three years into their marriage before having a baby.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control, state that American women are an average age of 26 when they get married and 29 when they have their first child — which varies from person to person. And this certainly doesn’t factor in older women.

At age 37, we can imagine, Knight-Pulliam didn’t want to take her chances on fertility as the older a woman gets the harder it is for her to have a baby without medical intervention and she was perhaps, anxious.

But Hartwell knows about the risk from his own personal history.  He was married before after a reported short courtship and he is now divorced from former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Lisa Wu.   Recently, Wu ripped into Knight-Pulliam for allegedly (according to Wu) commenting on Wu’s marriage to Hartwell on the show Hollywood Exes. She explained her concern was more for her 9-year old son with Hartwell.

“I’ve allowed people to assume as they wish and it’s been hurtful. But It’s no 1’s Biz & there is children involved. Not only her unborn child, but my 9 year old who can read very well,” she captioned a now deleted Instagram post.  Wu now stars on VH1’s Hollywood Divas.

Knight-Pulliam seems to have a large network of supporting family and friends, and may be okay. She was chilling pool side and showed a photo of her baby bump to her fans on Instagram lately. This could be captioned: #Unbothered
