The 10 Things People Give as Holiday Hostess Gifts

img_9545

The holiday season calls for entertaining and being entertained, in other people’s homes at cocktail parties, open houses, family and friends’ gatherings.

It is common etiquette to take the host a hostess gift, a small token of gratitude for opening their home and planning a gathering.

Here are the top 10 common things people bring to hosts:

1. A bottle of wine. This can be any variety and presented in a festive gift bag. Buy them in bulk so there is no last minute stops by the liquor store on your way to events.  You can get free shipping on any purchase of $49 or more with the code SHIP49 when you order from Wine.com through 12/4.

2. A box of chocolates. Everyone loves chocolates and the season is about decadent excessive eating after all.

3. Note cards. Nice note cards are the type of things people don’t buy for themselves ordinarily so that’s a great gift.

4. A nice plotted plant or flowers. These can last he season of taken care of well. Great gift.

5. Scented candles. Fragrances to mask the smell of cooking and make the home aromatic are wonderful. I love aromatherapy candles as well for their therapeutic effects.

6. Gift sets. Whether it’s candy, scented soaps or lotions, anything tied in a nice bow would work

7. Olive Oil. Many kitchen stores and gourmet gifts stores sell olive oil in nice decorative decanters.

8. Tree Ornaments. Why

not give the host a new ornament to decorate the tree with this year or next?

9. Wine Tags. Stores sell these tags that guests use to identify their glass of wine or decorate a wine bottle. They’re inexpensive but classy

10. Picture Frame. Buy a frame with a nice saying or that is a conversation piece on its own.

Good luck shopping and don’t forget to pick up your hostess gifts while you’re out.

Trending: Rosie O’Donnell clarifies her tweet regarding Barron Trump

download

Comedian Rosie O’Donell took to her personal blog to clarify a tweet she sent out last week where she questioned whether US President-elect Donald J. Trump‘s 10-year old son Barron with wife Melania Trump,  is autistic.

In the the initial tweet,  sent last Tuesday, November 22, the controversial celebrity attached a 7-minute long video which delved extensively into Barron’s on -stage and public behavior and strongly suggests that he does indeed fall along the autism spectrum.

The backlash to the tweet was swift against the former TV co-host of The Viewwith many calling it shameful to question whether a child who did not ask to be in the public eye had autism. O’Donnell penned a poem clarifying that her intent was not to harm Barron but to open dialogue and advocate for families with autistic children and autistic children and adults and those on the spectrum.

In the poem, titled “what we see and why”, O’Donnell reveals again that her own child has autism:

here is how it went down –

my 3.5 yr old daughter dakota

was diagnosed in september

with HFA – high functioning autism

i have been immersed in that world/reality since

learning – reading – asking questions

it’s all autism – all the time

for the newly diagnosed

as we try to grab onto

anything to keep us standing

the knowledge we r not alone

there r others living this too

when i saw the anti bullying video

that mentioned barron

it spoke to the symptoms many ASD kids have

it was educational and informational

these symptoms so many do not understand

– i thought – how amazing IF

IF

it is true

IF it is true – i tweeted from my heart

it would help so much with the autism epidemic

1 in 55 kids is an epidemic

donald and i agree on that

and not much else

i feel he is a clear and present danger…

Editor’s Note:

Personally, to me, it appears as if O’Donnell’s tweet referenced something I had seen being talked about for weeks now among educators and family and parents of children with autism who have said they could relate to Barron. She tweeted what many had been talking about.

Their position has been like many around the web, if Barron indeed is autistic, it would be a wonderful thing for the Future First Family to come forward with that news as it would help those living with autism and their family raise awareness, funding and more support and understanding.

I think the fact that people took her question as if she is insulting him says something about the ongoing stigma attached to it. The outrage seemed overblown in my opinion. It was as if Rosie had suggested Barron had leprosy or some other horrific condition.  Autism isn’t a death sentence or something so terrible that to be accused of being on the spectrum should be seen as such an insult. It’s not an insult.

However, labels stick and labels hurt and harm.

A family member recently suggested that my child might have ADHD simply because my daughter was giving this family member a lot of unwanted hugs during an event. She probably was joking but still it bugged me. Now I know that an ADHD diagnosis is relatively harmless and is very common. That diagnosis as well shouldn’t reflect negatively on  children with it, but it too carries stigma and no one likes to have an attachment placed on them or their child especially by non-medical personnel who isn’t responsible for the professional care to the subject child being slapped with a label, so I get it.

But, I think it is best to weigh the intent of the person doing the labeling before jumping in O’Donnell and Trump have a long history of exchanging insults and naturally, it appears as if the tweet had malicious intent and was just part of an ongoing battle. If it is to be flippant, to harm or to ridicule then no,they don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. I agree with those that say Barron, as with the Obama daughters, Sasha and Malia, Chelsea Clinton and the Bush twins, should be off limit to the press and the public.

That video had me tearing up and I appreciate that the future First Lady is taking her child’s needs first by insisting he continues his schooling through the school year, albeit at the exorbitant cost of $1M + daily to the city of NYC, Secret Service that will have to rent apartments from Donald Trump in the Trump Towers and soon Federal Tax payers through the first half of 2017.

At the end of the day, we all should lay off young Barron and let the family decide when, if and whether it wants to address any speculation surrounding Barron.

So Funny, Reflecting on My Immigrant Thanksgiving Experience

20131121-pantryessentials-cranberrysauce

A friend of mine just posted a photo of a perfectly can-shaped portion of cranberry sauce and reminded me of my immigrant Thanksgiving experience growing up in America as an expat.

Because I was born in another country and immigrated to the United States with my family at the tender age of 4, the concept of an annual feast with family one time of year to give thanks for blessings and all we have was completely foreign.

Fortunately, we were always invited to the home of one of my parent’s friends or distant fellow immigrant relatives that live in our city and therefore our job was usually to bring a dish or drink and arrive. That was the ritual until our family grew to a hefty size of 6 after my two younger sisters and younger brother were born.

All of a sudden, the invitations trickled down and eventually came to a complete halt. Who wanted to add 6 additional servings and place settings to accommodate such a massive brood? So…the Jallohs we were on their own to figure this American tradition out for ourselves.

Well, they don’t have Turkeys in our native Sierra Leone, West Africa and my mom was not sure how long such a ginormous bird needed to cook. There was no Internet back then to look it up and my mom would just peel off the plastic wrapper that the turkey came packaged in and would ball up the simple instructions with cooking time printed on it too.

Instead, every Thanksgiving on our own, she’d rise around 5 am and stick the Turkey in the oven to cook…for the entire day. slow blink She was not interested in eating uncooked meat so to be safe, we were forced to eat the driest turkey in all of Washington, DC I’m certain. Like, every year.

It’s not until I got older and upon coming back home from college one year, did I find a recipe online to follow. The cooking instructions only required our bird to stay in the oven for a few hours given its weight and not until that year, sometime in the 1990s did anyone in my family feast upon a juicy turkey. Before then, we all assumed that’s just how all turkeys tasted; like a piece of seasoned rubber. ha!

Sides were usually what we saw folks eating on TV shows and when it came to cranberry sauce, it was Ocean Spray’s jellied sauce in a can. It was an obligatory accessory and we honestly thought you had to have it on the table even though a lot of us were suspicious about eating something so sweet with a savory meal.

We don’t mix sugar with dinner at all back home. Heck, there is no such a thing as desserts. When you’re done eating, that’s it.  You get up from the table and go about your business. There’s no coffee, after dinner cocktails and apple pie. Aaaah America and it’s excess. Supersize me, for sure.

But each year, somebody would open the can, plop it on a plate and set in on the banquet table to be passed up by dinner guests and eventually placed in a Tupperwear bowl where it would live for a bout a week or two before finding its final resting place in the sink garbage disposal.

Over time, some of us began to appreciate the tartness and would add a forkful or two to the second or third plate– never the first. But for the most part, it usually met an untimely demise. Such a waste of good processed jelly.

As I got older,  I would eventually learn about how real, non canned and jellied, cranberry sauce was supposed to look and taste. I even saw a recipe once!

But… upon peeping all the steps to make it and the idea of soaking the berries overnight, I realized that was just too many steps for this woman. They don’t call me “Queen of Fast Cook” for nothing. And by “they”, I mean my mother-in-law and husband.

I’m still not sure I like the moniker cause its a bit of a shady diss but I’m growing to accept the title.

cranberry

Anyooo…so over time, exchanging Thanksgiving family meal stories casually with friends who also grew up in immigrant families, I began to appreciate the fact that eating a traditional all-American Thanksgiving meal was  a common thing. We immigrants just fell in line. Call it, assimilation lite maybe. Ha!

This truth manifested itself this week even! A friend and mom at my daughter’s school said her husband’s foreign mom also made “traditional” American items for Thanksgiving. She said her mom-in-law didn’t even bother make their cultural dishes from their native country.

Her attitude was like ours, “this is an American thing and this is what they eat, so this is what we’ll eat.” How funny is that?

And coming back full circle, seeing a friend’s plate of cranberry sauce as her Facebook profile triggered all sorts of memories. Another friend replied back to my declaration that the canned cranberry sauce is an immigrant favorite by sharing it’s an American favorite too!

Who knew!?! Hilarious! It’s never too late to learn something new about Thanksgiving.

This year, I’m thankful for having a very wide, varied and diverse group of circles of friends from different stages and experiences of my life who can constantly enrich my life with new perspectives on life, cultural traditions, points of views on all different things in our big wide world.

I’m wishing everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

Flu Season: A New Parent Guide to Common Childhood Illnesses

sick kid

New parents must be aware that not every illness is cause for too much alarm and that there are common childhood illnesses that a lot of kids get but survive. No need to panic and rush to the ER at the sign of a fever.

There are a handful of childhood illnesses that are more common than others, and you’ll need to be well-versed in how to recognize the early signs to ensure that your charges get the care they need in a timely manner.

  • The common cold – Everyone knows about the common cold, and there are plenty of old wives’ tales about how kids get them. Generally, the common cold is spread by germs that enter the body through the mouth or nose. Keeping little hands clean will help some in warding off this unpleasant experience. Always carry kid friendly hand sanitizer with you when going out in public and see to it that little ones do not gnaw on shopping cart handles or touch public door handles. Many stores now provide disinfectant wipes for the customer’s use, so take advantage of them when they’re available.
  • Chicken pox – Those little itchy dots can make for a miserable time for kids, and it’s one of the most common afflictions of childhood. Usually one child will come down with the pox and then others will fall one by one as it makes the rounds. Unfortunately, it usually gets spread around before the rash shows up. Kids are contagious for two or three days before the appearance of the rash through the crusting over of the blisters.

There are medicines that will help the itching, and oatmeal baths can also help keep irritation in check. Dr. Stephen Dowshen suggests avoiding the sun during the outbreak and for a few days after to prevent burning sensitive skin and increased scarring. Itching is exacerbated by heat and sweating; cold, damp washcloths applied to affected areas should help.

If you have not had chicken pox yourself and you have not had a vaccine, use precautionary measures to protect yourself while caring for an infected child. This illness takes quite a toll on teens and adults and can actually be dangerous for them, possibly leading to complications such as pneumonia, hepatitis and encephalitis. Scarring is permanent for adults who contract the disease.

  • Ear infections – Most kids experience ear infections from time to time. Don’t be surprised if your little charge has two or three of them during the year. Some children have chronic infections, meaning they are plagued with ear pain four or more times a year, or three or more times within a six month period.

Usually ear infections will occur with upper respiratory infections or colds. The estuation tube, which is much smaller in little ones, begins to swell. This tube connects the middle ear to the nose and back of the throat. Blockage here causes fluid to build up in the middle ear behind the eardrum. This build up can lead to infection due to germs multiplying, but doesn’t always happen. When it does, it often results in the child fighting off the infection and fever ensues. Temporary hearing loss can also be present as a result of the pressure on the eardrum caused by the excessive fluid.

Since some ear infections tend to be viral rather than bacterial, many doctors take a wait and see attitude rather than prescribing antibiotics. They will often suggest pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and usually the infection runs its course in a matter of a few days. If it becomes severe, then more aggressive treatment is called for.

  • Fifth disease – For being a common illness, Fifth disease, caused by Parvovirus B19, is not talked about much. It’s a rash that leaves a child looking as if she’s been slapped. It is also commonly called “slapped cheek” rash since it is the most recognized manifestation of the illness. Initial symptoms – fever, runny nose and headache – are fairly mild.  The rash typically shows up several days after the onset of the more non-specific symptoms.

Except for rare instances where the child has a very weak immune system, Fifth disease tends to be mild and usually disappears within a few days. Most kids have full recovery and future immunity to the virus. In cases where the immune system is compromised, serious complications such as chronic anemia can crop up that will require medical treatment.

The historical name, Fifth disease, comes from the rash being number five on a list of common skin rash illnesses affecting children. Measles was first on the list followed by scarlet fever, rubella and Duke’s disease.

  • Croup – This illness is common among the very young. It is often the result of infection caused by human parainfluenza viruses (not to be confused with the flu virus). The upper respiratory tract becomes infected, and fever, runny nose and cough show up as symptoms. In the case of croup, the upper airways become inflamed. This inflammation of the larynx and trachea often results in a barking cough. It can also lead to hoarseness.

Children have a tendency to get worse at night. This is especially true for the child who is upset or crying. Since the swollen tissue of the windpipe can make breathing difficult, you may hear a high pitched noise called stridor during inhalations.

Plenty of rest and fluids, along with acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort and fever, are generally enough to get the child through this uncomfortable illness.

Most of the common illnesses children will contract are fairly benign and will pass within a few days. You need to be aware of what illness they are contending with though, so that you can take necessary precautions to protect your own health. If you have a strong immune system, generally you will have nothing to be concerned about; still, you need to be diligent  around those diseases that affect adults more adversely then children.

Always remember that washing hands, proper etiquette for sneezing and coughing and a healthy lifestyle will help keep most illnesses at bay. When illness does strike, lots of TLC and a nice steaming bowl of chicken soup seem to work wonders in combatting those pesky bugs.

Jennifer Garner went with black as well in a floor length slim fitting Jenny Packham gown with an adorned halter top. She looked youthful and refreshing! Beautiful!

Some of yall who don’t follow this genre of music might not have known that Britney Spears‘ baby sister Jamie Lynn Spears  is an accomplished and successful country music singer and award-winning songwriter of hits for other artists.

Jessie James Decker showed out in a sequined halter gown with sexy side cut outs from Jay Godfrey NY.  I loved her loose ringlets that framed her face and her nude matte make up was perfect! C’est Bonne!

I loved the gorgeous J. Mendel one sleeve cap sleeve dress that Jennifer Nettles wore with the sheer under blue applique and that tangerine popped against her olive tone skin.  Nettles rarely does wrong on the red carpet. She has a great figure.

Finally, Carrie Underwood hosted and walked away with the Female Vocalist of the Year award but before walked the red carpet in a beaded dusty pink Michael Cinco halter gown with Swarovski crystals, pearls and scattered organza flowers. She accessorized the dress with triangle-shaped Butani diamond earrings and diamond rings by Hearts on Fire and Harry Kotlar. (I borrowed US Weekly‘s description. tee hee)

These 6 Celeb Moms win Halloween every Year

Some celebrity moms are known for their annual elaborate Halloween costumes.

We thought we’d share with you our faves and ask which of the following celebrity mom which we’ve featured and “bump watched” in the past does the best Halloween costumes.

Heidi Klum is the Queen and usually goes over the top each year at her annual Halloween party. She is usually unrecognizable, as a human even, some years.

Kelly Ripa has a great time dressing up as fellow celebs each year and she nails it each time.

Kim Kardashian-West usually goes with a sexy version of whatever costume she’s in…no surprise there. Her Wonder Woman, Little Red Riding Hood, Mermaid and Cat Woman costumes were saucy.

When married to ex Jordan Bratman, the diva with powerful pipes and Christina Alguilera dressed in sexy get ups and went as a sexy nurse, sexy cop, and sexy pirate wench. Once she did spooky with a ghost bride and groom.

Fergie also goes way over the top and went as a Toddler in a Tiara one year, Cleopatra another then recently she and hubby Josh Duhamel have done spooky going as Elvira and RiffRaff from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Day of the Dead figurines.

No one does super pink and elaborate hot and girly like Bethenny Frankel who dressed as candy one year, Marilyn Monroe another, a sexy roller girl from the 70s and a sexy Hello Kitty! grrrrrr!

Love them all! I don’t know who is the best! You tell us!
