My Pick of 7 Chic Diaper Bags You Can Use After Baby Grows UP

ju ju be

Diaper bags have come a long way. For a few years after first starting this blog, I would publish a most expensive baby item post that was very popular. It included a list of the top most expensive diaper bags.

Even those were not as cool and hip as the options we have now. Here are seven sophisticated, chic, stylish and fabulous baby bags that are so gorge that they’d be marvelous to wear after baby no longer needs a diaper bag and to even keep as a heirloom item that you use for later pregnancies or even pass down. Yes, this can happen! Check out my faves:

4df2171a5323436a66f7e95da68ee01a_best

One of my faves is Kate Spade’s New York Harmony baby bag. It is so pretty and classic. The simple black with tan trim is fabu.  I also love the smooth nylon material which makes it easy to clean. The silhouette is classic in that it can match with your wardrobe and like most diaper bags, it comes with a changing pad and retails $298.

gucci diaper bag

Logo and monogram bags are timeless and one bag that is also a status symbol is the original Gucci diaper bag. This beige fabric and leather bag was a staple among high society women. It’s deep with plenty of inside pockets and a ruched side pockets to hold baby bottles and diaper wipes and other items you might want instant access too. It is great for all sizes of women cause the draps drop 17.7 inches. It retails at a hefty $1,150 hence why the rich moms love it so.

skip hop chelsea bag

I just absolutely love the practicality of the Skip Hop Chelsea Diaper Backpack because it can double as a weekender or a casual bag for outings and errands-running. It has a drawstring closure which is great for getting into when  you’re hands are full, but also comes with clip on shoulder straps…because sometimes, you need straps. It too comes with a cushioned changing pad and is just $100! A total steal!

babymel grace bag

Another sleek minimalist bag can be found in Babymel’s Grace Diaper Bag. It has a built-in insulated zipper bottle pocket. Winning! It keeps fluids warm or cool fo up to 4 hours, the manufacturers say. It’s also funcitonal because it is made of polyurethane and can easily be wiped clean. It also has a great price point at $90!

I just love how cosmopolitan and metropolitan Ju-Ju-Be’s BFF Legacy Diaper bag is. I got a chance to check this stylish and smart bag which is one of the latest of four new styles/prints out: The Navigator. It is very pretty. The hardware is pretty sturdy and there is loads of room inside this baby! There is a clip to hold a key chain and lots of interior pockets including a sleeve for a mobile phone so it is easy to whip out when it rings but still insulated from all the other stuff so it doesn’t get moisture on it. Also, because it is inside the bag, it cannot be pick pocketed in a crowded location. The bag is great for fighting germs too. It has Agion antimicrobial lining to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. And, cleaning the diaper bag is easier, thanks to a Teflon fabric protector that helps repel stains. Use the backpack diaper bag when you want the comfort of ergonomically curved and padded shoulder straps, and the convenience of multiple zippered pockets to stow all of your baby’s essentials. This Ju-Ju-Be backpack has two exterior insulated bottle pockets with Thinsulate to keep items warm or cold.

The easy-to-reach Mommy pocket, featuring a diapers and wipes pocket, on the front of the bag helps moms and dads do quick changes when necessary. There’s also a memory foam changing pad included in the back panel zipper compartment to aid in the process of changing your little one.

The 11.5-inch opening of this compartment is also suitable for holding tablets, small laptops or magazines. Stow your phone in the cell phone pocket, and put away small items like sunglasses or a digital camera in the convenient top storage pocket. Wash this backpack diaper bag as needed in the washing machine, and then let it air dry.

It’s an amazing bag! And it too sells in a great price point at about $180.00 for all you get in this fab bag!

timi and leslie

  1. Another super chic option is Timi & Leslie’s Charlie Diaper Bag.  This bag is made of water-resistant faux leather and it stands out because it also comes with a zippered sac for storing soiled baby clothes and keeping them away from your fresh stash inside. It also has lots of exterior and interior pockets. It’s just $159.99 which is a decent price. I could definitely see one wearing this after baby grows up even!

burberry diaper bag check

Finally, the cream de la creme is this gorgeous Burberry Mason Leather & Check Baby Bag. That signature pattern is the hallmark of this British designers’ products. This tote is in a classic shape and is quite the sophisticated piece! This bag is imported from Italy and retails at $1,495 but it’s worth it! Look how gorgeous it is!

Your Late Fall/Early Winter Holiday Season Wardrobe Guide

isabella oliver fall

The late fall and early winter season is all about layering and comfort for moms-to-be. It’s very easy to get overheated so dressing your bump involves wearing items that you can peel off  and stay cool. Pants and dresses should be comfortable and contain scrunching on the sides to accommodate a growing belly.  Fabrics need breathable and soft yet made of all natural materials so not to irritate a pregnant women’s sensitive skin.

All of these characteristics can be found in one of my fave designers from my pregnancy, Isabella Oliver (which is having a mid-season sale). The line is a celebrity favorite, but I love it because it sells fashionable and chic clothing, but that at a modest price range that won’t break the bank.

I know for a fact and from my experience that when you put on an IO dress, it feels like second skin but has plenty give. I wore my pieces long after my pregnancy and even these days because many of them are timeless and classic.

This time of the year also involves plenty of holiday parties, visits to family and outdoor events and so a wardrobe should contain certain staple items.  I’d recommend making sure your wardrobe is stocked with the following:

  1. a Cardigan in a bright red, yellow or other mood-lifting color. Avoid prints bc solids are better for mixing and matching. Also, if you care about looking bigger, prints generally are a no-no in that regard.
  2. A pair of maternity jeans to wear to trips to the pumpkin patch, Christmas tree shopping or mall walking during Holiday shopping time. Get at least two pairs: a dressy pair that can be paired with a blazer and a more casual pair, perhaps distressed for an edgier weekend outing.
  3. LBDs – A few little black dresses are in order for Holiday parties. You can get an off-the-shoulder top to go with the trend or a turtleneck for the colder times of the year or if is raining or if the event will be outside.
  4. A chunky sweater – A thick sweater is ideal because they can be worn over top of several layers and serve as an alternative to a heavy coat because when you’re already feeling heavy, the last thing you want to throw on is a big ole coat!
  5. A Blazer – a blazer in a dark color is great for work functions,  cocktail hours, or chic lounge events meeting up with friends for a casual dinner or lunch.
  6. Jersey shirts – the feel of a jersey top is the best. They are also light enough that they can be layered. Get an assortment of muted and soft colors like pink, grey, tan and green. To mix it up and add a bit of flavor, you can pick up some striped tops as well.
  7. A festive dress – For Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, a dress with a cute pattern or nice cut will be perfect. You can also wear this dress in the family holiday photo or to a tree lighting or some other happy occasion.

DJ Khaled Snapchats his Son’s Birth, Internet Goes Wild

dj-khaled

DJ Khaled is one of those celebrities who has a ginormous Snapchat following and has really taken off as an artist and a social media personality using that site.  Recently,  he went BIG when shared the birth of his son to that audience of this week when his fiance Nicole Tuck welcomed the couple’s first child.

The Internet went wild with its response!

In a series of snaps, Khaled  shared vids of himself listening to Bob Marley, Arabic prayer chants and finally his own music, while Tuck labored, pushed and eventually gave birth to baby Asahd Tuck Khaled on Sunday, October 23rd.  Some fans were cool with it and still others thought it was TMI.

He did give us all a heads up because he told Jimmy Kimmel his intentions back in June, Time reports!

When asked about Tuck’s thoughts on it, he said: “The key is that I’m the king and every queen should support the king. I’m going to talk to the doctor and if the doctor says everything is gonna run smooth, meaning that we wanna make sure that the queen is right and my son is right. If it’s running smooth where I can just do my thing, I’mma Snapchat the whole thing.”

Kourtney Kardashian delivered her own baby on national TV on her reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. It’s like our new normal.

Here ya go, if you haven’t seen it! One YouTube user put all the clips together and uploaded them here:

4 Alternatives to Halloween for Families that Don’t Celebrate It

halloween alternatives

My children go to a religious school that doesn’t celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense. We’ll be having alternative ways to enjoy the season, paying homage to all souls that have gone on and heralding historical, liturgical or literary figures by dressing as them instead of ghosts, goblins and ghouls.

There are several families, cultures and groups that also do not partake in the season. Their children may feel left out, but there are other ways to enjoy the Autumn and Harvest time this time of the year.

Here are four ways to celebrate the season in a different way:
  1. Harvest festivals. Churches often offer harvest festivals or celebrations to shift the focus from scary costumes to the joys of fall. These festivals offer carnival games and other activities. Check out the calendar at some of the larger churches in your area. Most of the time these events offer FREE admission, with a recommended donation of a bag of candy or canned food. Noah’s Ark parties are also popular alternatives to a Halloween celebration for religious families.

2. Pumpkin patches. Pumpkin season is here. Many local farms offer their customers a chance to pick pumpkins and participate in fun activities for just the cost of the picked pumpkin. Pumpkin Patches and More.org  is a great resource for finding a local pumpkin patch.

3. Pumpkin carving party. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to throw a pumpkin-carving party. Ask all of your guests to bring a pumpkin, knife and newspaper (to collect spare pumpkin parts). Then just stock up on cheap drinks and snacks. If you’re inclined, you can also buy a bag of cheap tea-lights (you can get 20 tea-lights for $1 at the Dollar Store). Parents and children can work together to crave pumpkins. Be sure to ask guests to set aside seeds so that you can bake them in the oven for a FREE and festive snack. Allrecipes.com offers a great recipe. Once pumpkins are complete, light them up and enjoy the atmosphere while socializing and snack on fresh seeds. Don’t worry about putting together a playlist; most cable TV stations offer a seasonal music channel you can play while everyone is gathered.

4. Volunteer at a local organization. Check with our local homeless shelter or soup kitchen to see if they need any extra help the night of Halloween. Volunteering is a free way to feel great, and doing something good for another person is a great treat – with no trick.

What are you ideas for other festive alternatives to trick-or-treating?

Study: Weight Loss Surgery Patients Need Wait 3 Years Before Trying to Conceive

belly

A new study advises women who have undergone bariatric surgery for weight loss to wait at least three years afterward before attempting to become pregnant.

Those were the results of a 33-year retrospective study published this week in JAMA Surgery.

The reasons: complications.

Compared with infants from the general population, infants from mothers with a bariatric-surgery history were at higher risk for perinatal complications – namely prematurity, intensive care unit admission, and low birth weight, data indicated.

It is during the first three years, post-op, when these risks diminish over time.

“This is new information that can help inform counseling for bariatric patients,” said corresponding author Dr. Brodie Parent, a general surgery resident at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

How to Donate Excess Halloween Candy to US Troops’ Care Packages

halloween candy

Parents, link up with your area dentist to donate all that surplus candy your kids will get this Halloween to troops and First Responders.

I’ve blogged before about various organizations that collect candy and this year Kool Smile dental offices are collecting candy beginning Friday, Oct. 28 through Saturday, Nov. 5. You don’t have to be a current patient to participate!

For every 25 pieces of candy you donate, Kool Smiles will give you a toy for your kid and we know toys are better for preventing cavities than sticky sweet candy.

The candy is distributed later by Operation Gratitude which will include it in care packages to our brave men and women serving in the Armed Forces overseas to remind them of home sweet home.

Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ care packages to Veterans, First Responders, New Recruits, Wounded Heroes, their Care Givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home. Each package is filled with food, entertainment, hygiene and hand-made items, as well as personal letters of support. Our mission is to lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of the Military and First Responder communities, and provide volunteer opportunities for civilians anywhere in America to express their appreciation to all who serve our nation. Each package contains donated product valued between $45 and $100 and costs our organization $15 to assemble and ship. Since its inception in 2003, Operation Gratitude volunteers have shipped more than 1.6 Million Care Packages.

Last year, Kool Smiles patient families donated a record-breaking 6,520 pounds of Halloween candy, that’s over 3 tons, to the men and women serving in the Armed Forces overseas.

Awesome! Better than scaring your kids with Jimmy Kimmel‘s “I ate all the candy” prank!

Decision2016: 50 NonPartisan Ways To Teach Your Children about Civics

voting-booth1

The US presidential election is heating up and I must say it is quite a bizarre spectacle but I want to reaming non-partisan in this space so I’ll just repost a fave post I put a while back of 50 ways that parents and inspire their children to be more civic-minded and become more aware of democracy.

Beyond taking a child in with you to the ballot box, here are 50 other ways to teach children about the importance and value of having their voice heard:

1. Take children to the polls with you. Actually schlepping the kids down to the voting booth is a real way to show them the value and importance of voting. Have them vote on what to eat for dinner.

2. Let your child wear your “I voted” sticker to school the next day.

3. Organize a family field trip to the State House or the mayor’s office

4. Let the little ones decide what outfit to wear one day.

5. Get out a globe, give it a spin, then look up a random place on it online or at the library

6. Check out a civics book from the library and go through it with your middle school kid

7. Turn on CNNor MSNBC or FOX (depending on your political bent) and let them watch poll results come in, at least briefly.

8. Involve them in your civic activity or volunteer effort, find a way to include your children. It helps them realize their role in society

9. Show them images of your local candidates from one of the many mailers they send

10. Talk to them about Women Suffrage or the Civil Rights Era and other groups battle to get the right to vote

11. Do some online or library research and talk to them about other forms of government in other nations.

12. Find and download a mobile or iPad app that does a great job at teaching civics and democracy

13. Nurture your budding leader. Whenever there is an opportunity for your child who may have shown to you s/he is a budding leader, encourage him or her to run for office, on the very local local level. Your kid would appreciate that the same type of work it takes to get classmates to vote for him/her as a candidate is a micro-version of what goes on in elections for higher offices.

14. Get a trivia board game or cards that includes a section about government and politics and play it with them

15. Visit historical landmarks.

16. Help them register to vote when they turn 18 years old.

17. Teach by example and let them know you are going to research issues and candidates before you vote so they can learn not to rely on others but to do the work to learn more on their own.

18. Take them to a homeless shelter so they can learn that their actions make a difference

19. Order pizza and count the toppings and determine which toppings has the most and use t hat example to teach about voting.

20. Let them volunteer. If there is a civic issue that impacts your community, talk to your child about it and about different ways to help. If you realize your child is inclined to or is interested, encourage him to lead an effort to hold a canned food drive or some other fundraising effort for the cause. It’s a great way to stoke an early interest in being a leader.

21. Let them watch the old School House Rock shorts from the 70s and 80s that teach about how a Bill becomes a law

22. Take them to a School Board meeting so they can see the importance of getting involved with those who make decisions about the schools.

23. Let them pick a topic that matters to them and encourage them to write a letter to the editor of the local paper about that issue.

24. Talk about age-appropriate issues that are in the newspaper each day.

25. Encourage them to write their local representative

26. Design a Civics Jeopardy! Game or find one online to play with them.

27. Look up info about and plan a trip to visit the oldest landmark in your town.

28. Find a charity that you and your family care about and volunteer at an event it plans to teach kids about awareness and responsibility to others.

29. Help them draft up rules for play, chores and civility in the home. Post them up on a posterboard in the kitchen so all can see.

30. Buy or make puzzles of the United States and play with them so they learn about all the different states that make up the union.

31. Talk about the differences in people, culture and topography of the different states so they appreciate the differences in different areas of their country.

32. Talk to them about different people and cultures of the world so they realize the world is a very big place.

33. Pull fun political cartoons from different papers online to look at and try to decode the message in them.

34. Create a survey and have them poll their friends and family so they learn about the importance of gauging other people’s interests and learn how polling works.

35. For the next election, encourage them to volunteer to register voters.

36. For the next election, take them to a political rally.

37. Encourage them to use their Social Media activities for good. Let the young people in your household know that even though they may not be eligible to vote yet, they could certainly encourage friends and family members they interact with who can use social media such as Twitter and Facebook.

38. Take a tour of the city council offices.

39. Take your child to a town hall meeting.

40. Download fun facts about government, the White House, Congress and local governments from online resources.

41. Talk to them about what the different parties stand for.

42. Talk to them about third party candidates and their role in elections over the years.

43. Participate in a live chat or another meet and greet opportunity with your local elected officials.

44. Talk to them about local issues that are of concern to your town, city, community or state.

45. Help them make a collage of state symbols.

46. Have them write a letter to the President.

47. Have them write a letter to a soldier.

48. Get your middle or high schooler to organize a donation drive for the soldiers.

49. Get them to memorize the preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

50. Play a game that helps them memorize the capitals of the different states.

Hopefully, one or a few of these activities will help you grow strong, independent thinking, civically- and socially- conscious children.

How a Pregnant Olivia Wilde Looks When She’s Ready to Cut a Paparrazo

olivia-wilde-oliviawilde-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos-fm

Olivia Wilde is not really feeling all of the paparazzi that stalk her daily life these days, especially now that she is heavily pregnant with her second baby with fiance, actor Jason Sudeikis.

She posted a photo this weekend of herself sitting on a part bench while out and about.

“Death stare sent this weirdo photog with a giant nat geo lens (ya know, the kind you use to snap wild animals who would kill you if you got too close) scurrying backwards into the park bush he was literally, and I do mean literally, stalking me from,” she captioned a photo of herself posted on Instagram. “Wtffffffff. When you see pics of people looking angry it’s because they’re reacting normally to an extremely abnormal situation. I’m posting this so people understand that this ? face is how it feels to be followed by strange men (sorry but it’s almost never a woman) who climb trees to snap pics of pregnant ladies. Not cool.#mamawolfwillcutyou #robocop

I must say that I do appreciate her casual street style in that BlankNYC green bomber jacket (retail $148), grey maternity T, distressed denim maternity jeans and over sized tote with cool aviators! Her facial bone structure is to die for in this photo! #AngryCute

Will Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher Punk Us with Another Gender-Bender Baby Name?

ashton kutcher

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis have selected a name for their soon-to-be-born 2nd child, a baby boy and we at the Bellyitch offices are hedging bets on whether they’ll flip the script on the gender bender celeb baby naming trend.

Kutcher confirmed that he and his wife are expecting  a baby boy after the two gave their first child, a daughter a male name: Wyatt.

In 2013, we blogged about the then celebrity -name trend of giving girls boy or unconventional objects names. Back then, the celebs on the list included:

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian : North

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon: Monroe

Lisa Ling: Jett

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson: Maxwell

Beyonce Knowles and Jay Z: Blue

Toni Collette: Sage

Gwynth Paltrow: Apple

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves: Vida

Then we updated that post in May 201 and noted that even more celebrities were naming their baby girls, traditional boy names:

Haylie Duff named her daughter Ryan
CaCee Cobb named her daughter Wilder a
Sara Gilbert has a daughter Sawyer.
Savannah Guthrie  named her daughter Vale
Ashton Kutcher  and Mila Kunis named her daughter Wyatt
Kristin Cavallari, Bristol Palin and Liv Tyler named their respective daugher, Saylor/Sailor
We also pointed out others that we missed
Rebecca Gayheart named her daughter Billie
Heidi Klum named her daughter Lou
Soleil Moon Frye has a daughter named Jagger Joseph
And recognized that the trend really isn’t that new given older celebs have “been” giving their baby girls boy names
Diane Keaton’s daughter is named Dexter
Teri Hathcher’s daughter is called Emerson
Michelle Branch‘s daughter is Owen
Melissa Etheridge’s daughter is named Johnnie
Rebecca Romijn‘s dauhter is Charlie
Angie Harmon is a rebel all three of her daughters have male names; Avery, Finley and Emery
Will the Kutchers join the likes of Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz who named their son Genesis or Shakira who names her son Sasha? Time will tell.
