Inside ‘POWER’s Naturi Naughton’s Baby Shower (PHOTOS)

naturi-naughton
Power‘s Naturi Naughton had the most elegant African “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” themed baby shower last month at the Dazzler Hotel in downtown Brooklyn.

naturi3

Naughton and her longtime beau Ben celebrated the impending arrival at a very festive and exquisitely decorated forum which was also star studded and attended by her co POWER star LaLa Anthony, actresses Regina King (American Crime, The Leftovers) and Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow)  and a Grimm star Russell Horsnby and The Game actor Hosea Chanchez.

“I loved my Afro-Centric theme: ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.’ Primrose Couture Events designed the perfect tribal décor with a village vibe, infused with my Caribbean roots,” the petite star told PEOPLE magazine.

The couple also used the occasion to announce the gender of the baby.

“It’s a girl! My man [longtime boyfriend Ben] and I totally predicted a boy at first,” the former 3LW girl band member told the magazine. “I was so sure because I am having such an easy and stress-free pregnancy and I had heard all these stories about how girls steal your beauty and make you really sick when pregnant. Well … so not true for me.”

naturi4

Ha! We know that’s right. At her shower, Naughton looked stunning and glowed in a white lace frock with her loose ringlets adorned in a light floral crown.  Guests noshed on gold covered oreos, macrons, cake pops, and other tasty delectables perfectly decorated in the theme’s colors of gold and green and had fun cutting up in the photo booth.

But as the night went on, the guests let their hair down and can be seen “jumping up” to some soca music from the Caribbean.

And Naughton, who is also a rapper and excellently played rapper Lil Kim in the movie about the Notorious B.I.G. on the big screen, revived her role on the dance floor to a Lil Kim song.

Naughton told PEOPLE she’s “still feeling pretty good,” but is dealing with one issue many women who have been through pregnancy can relate to.

naturi6

“I’m definitely experiencing the swelling of the feet now though, which sucks, but hey, I get a foot rub every night so I’m loving that part!” she joked while adding that her fave indulgent and cravings are Rice Krispies Treats.

“She puts peanut butter in them and they taste like heaven!” Naughton says. “I can tell the baby is loving them too because there’s a happy dance in my belly after my snack time.”

naturi1

Naughton and Ben are not sharing the baby girl’s name until she arrives.

“I think we are 90 percent settled on a beautiful name that we both love,” adding that she and Ben will decide for sure after her birth but other aspects of baby prep are coming along.

“The nursery is coming together, and it’s hard to resist all the adorable baby girl clothes out there, so her wardrobe is in full effect” she said, though the event is not set to arrive until July so she still has a little bit of time to pull together the last minute nesting.

primrose-couture-events-llc-primrosecoutureevents-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos-1

And July cannot get her fast enough as Naughton is already prepping to be a “mommy and me” type of mom.

naturi2

“Dressing alike, mommy-daughter day dates, singing together and teaching her all the important things I learned from my mother,” Naughton told PEOPLE what she is excited about. “I just want to give her a strong foundation, so she can navigate this crazy world by being a strong and beautiful little girl.”

No really…do you have a Favorite Child?

Attorney and Blogger Darcy Shapiro penned a recent HuffPo piece titled, “I Have a Favorite Child. Admit it, So do you” that a friend recently sent me.
From the clickbait headline, I assumed she would be sharing the fact that she preferred or liked one of her kids over her others and was challenging other parents to admit that they too have a fave kid.
Some of us, like me, who watch reality TV a lot, may recall a somewhat cringe-worthy moment when Kris Jenner proudly announced that her daughter Kim was her favorite. Way to go to confirm any insecurities or self-doubt those other five kids you gave birth to may feel about there mom! Sheesh!
Anyway, the HuffPo piece wasn’t what I expected. Rather, it was Shapiro explaining how through the ups and down of her day, she had an appreciation and love for one child’s positive behavior while maybe  was frustrated over another, but that shifted throughout the day and everyday.
Good for her, but come on. Let’s be really, real!
Many of us have that one kid we always boast about to our friends, or whose photo we share more in social media than the others. Clearly, to others who know we have more than one child, it must appear that we have a preference.
And in real life, among friends, we may unknowingly complain more about our troubles or frustration with one kid, while only sharing laudatory news about another kid. We may lean into one child more at events or put an arm around that one child more.
If you recognize that you may be guilty of showing favoritism, here is a way to confirm it: ask a close friend if they think you have a favorite based on that friend’s observation of you and your children’s interactions. Listen and get their honest opinion. The answer may surprise you.
Then if it turns out that you appear to favor one kid over another to the outside world, chances are the kids pick up on your cues and think so too. That is not cool and you may want to give yourself a gut check and then shift your behavior, tone, language and decisions to adjust.
I know I do and like Shapiro, try to tell each kid they are my favorite 9 year old or daughter (when I only have one daughter). I also try to have one-on-one mommy and me time or dates. I shower them with random compliments, periodically, and tell them I love them often so they don’t ever have a chance to doubt…um you know, to off balance those many other times when they’re driving me up the wall and may say something crazy like, “Quit driving me crazy! Do you want your mom to end up in an insane asylum?!”  (ha!)
Many adults grow resenting a parent because they may have felt that parent did not like them as much as a sibling. It’s the stuff that emboldens intense sibling rivalry or resentment.
Further, Subconscious awareness about parental bias can have an impact on a child’s relationships and behavior as they grow. They may act out with more outrageous negative behavior to at least get noticed or may do the opposite: be reclusive and choose not to share or be open and honest with that parent. None of that is good.
Just something to think about, parents as we go about this challenging process of trying to raise good kids.

Whether you’re pregnant, sober or just want something special to drink (minus the booze), these tasty wines, spirits and mocktails have you covered.

We giggle at #WineMom memes as much as the next parent, but there’s something to be said about staying sober while still celebrating (Hello, 6 a.m. toddler wake-up calls!). Raise a glass without worry by pouring one of these tasty non-alcoholic drinks.

Here are our faves!

Ceder’s

Gin-lovers rejoice! You may not bother with the real stuff after sipping this distilled, non-alcoholic alt-gin. Seriously, this stuff is so good. Choose from Classic, Crisp or, our favourite, Wild, which has juniper combined with ginger, clove and rooibos. Developed by a husband and wife duo, it’s made from a variety of 18 hand-picked South African botanicals, found in the Cederberg

mountains of the Western Cape, along with others sourced throughout Europe. The botanicals are individually distilled and then blended with pristine water from Sweden to extract the finest flavours.

Love craft beer but hate the hangover a few too many pints leaves you with? With Blonde, IPA, Stout, Pale and Red to choose from, this Canadian-made craft brewer offers low-cal, non-alcoholic versions of your favourite brews. $25/pack of 10 multipack

Seedlip spirits

Made with the same care and attention as a bespoke spirit, these non-alcoholic beverages are based on the recipes from the 17th-century book The Art of Distillation. Choose from Garden 108, a fresh and floral blend of handpicked peas and hay from founder Ben Branson’s farm; Spice 94, a distilled Jamaican allspice berry and cardamom mixture, which pairs perfectly with tonic and red grapefruit; or Grove 42, a citrusy blend of blood orange, mandarin, lemon and ginger.

Lumette! non-alcoholic distilled spirit

Handcrafted and distilled using traditional methods on Vancouver Island, these tasty spirits claim to deliver the same experience as a contemporary-style botanical based spirit, with zero percent alcohol. The new London Dry is perfect for gin-lovers with a juniper citrus-forward flavour, while the Bright Light is distilled with a bounty of botanicals giving you the uniqueness and versatility of an aromatic spirit.

pink House Alchemy Ginger Shrub

Many mixologists use shrubs to enhance the flavour of spirits, but this “sipping vinegar” can also play a starring role in your glass. Simply add soda and a slice of candied ginger and you’ve got an impressive-looking mocktail.

Sporty Mom’s Guide to Chic Diaper Backpacks Dads Can Carry Too

Parker Baby Co changing pad

Diaper bags are traditionally feminine and come in nice pretty pastels.

They’re often offered in floral prints and some have cute geometric shapes and target moms who prefer soft aesthetics in accessories. This targeting leaves  out the outdoorsy, on-the-go, sporty type moms.

The yoga mom or mom who enjoys running and hiking for fun may be less inclined to purchase bags with soft color palettes.

Similarly, I think those former rocker girl or hip hop loving dame turned mom may prefer a bag that is functional and in darker shades. They may also perfer gender neutral designs.

The solution for me when I was starting my family was to invest in a black leather diaper bag by Coach which had a neutral design but lots of structure. I also invested in a cross body bag.

The benefits of having a non-gender specific styled baby diaper bag is that dad can pick it up and cart it with him when collecting the baby from her grandma’s house.

A diaper back pack is the ultimate compromise between bags that have to be carried over one shoulder and that mimic a handbag and a cross the chest messenger bag which is a style common in men’s bags.

Finally, when it comes to color, you cannot go wrong with black.

Black is stylish, sleek and matches everything. It’s a fave of moministas amongst and stains are hard to spot on black items.

When you add all of these characteristics together, a few bags come percolate to the top of the list.

Here are three:

Obersee Diaper Bag

Obersee Diaper bag

The award-winning  Obersee Rio Diaper Backpack is top of mind.

This back pack is made by the same family-owned company which got its start selling leotards and gear for gymnasts. As you can see from the photo above, it targets the adventurous outdoorsy type family which prefers to keep hands free to actively participate in whatever action is around them.

Obersee diaper bag

The backpack has plenty of interior room and comes with a Baby Bottle Cooler and Changing Mat, Shoulder Baby Bag, Food Cooler, Clip to Stroller.

Overall, the diaper back pack gets great reviews for durability, quality of material and sturdiness of structure online.

Obersee diaper bag

There is plenty of space within the interior of this bag and atop is a mesh compartment that can be used to store a pacifier, stuffed animal or wash cloth that is airing out to dry and won’t soak the other items in the bag.

Obersee diaper bag changing pad

And for moms and dads who routinely go and explore off the beaten paths, there is an extra large changing pad.

You  can be spread it out when there is no available diaper changing station. The size of this pad is extraordinarily large.  Exploring outdoors, socially distant, is a great idea during this pandemic!

Obersee diaper bag inside

There is a separate compartment in the front that separates blankets, change of clothes and other items. This compartment soiled by spilled foor or drink. The bag has a metal ring that you can use to attach to the stroller and also has a top strap for grab and go functionality.

The best function of this bag is its detachable cooler. You can house baby bottles or snacks in it. The removable cooler comes in a variety of colors if you want to mix and match.

Obersee diaper bag features

Parker Baby Diaper Backpack

Parker Baby Birch Diaper Backpack

A second functional and stylish neutral diaper backpack bag is the Birch Bag Birch Bag by The Parker Baby Co.

This bad is super large and comes in a chic grey with tan trim,  silver hardware, insulated pockets, stroller straps and a good sized changing pad. I wish the changing pad was a little larger but is it sufficient.

mom changing baby with Parker Baby Birch Diaper Backpack changing pad

There are ten functional pockets including a “mommy pocket” with key ring, insulated pockets, a laptop/tablet sleeve, changing pad (included) and more. The convenient stroller hooks allow you to connect it to your stroller while you get out for some fresh air after being cooped up inside the house too long.

Parker Baby Birch Diaper Backpack mom and baby

This bag is also made with a neutral design and for the modern mom and dad in mind. The Parker Baby Co is a family-owned business headed by parents of twin girls, a toddler and a sweet baby boy, which claims to “strive for simplification” when designing products. It gets mainly 4 to 5 star reviews on Amazon.

Hap Tim Diaper Bag Backpack

Hap Trim Diaper bag

The Hap Tim Diaper bag is a less costly alternative to the previous two which has upper mid price range. This is also cloth bag but is made for the rugged outdoorsy family who don’t mind being out in inclement weather. The bag is waterproof! It wicks moisture in light rain.

As with the other two pags, the shoulder pads on this bag are padded and extra wide for ergonomical comfort.  It also has plenty of space and compartments inside to chuck all the various things you have to carte along when you take baby out!

This bag also boasts a double design, meaning there is a separate section made to be removable. It can store items as well similar to the Obersee.  The bag is very large and spacious even without the front compartment.

It is also has 18 pockets that you can easily organize all the different things you schlep on trips short and long: your keys, mobile phone, laptop, bottles, change of clothes, burp cloths, receiving blankets, and more.

Finally, for the fan of designer bags, you have the Herschel Settlement Sprout backpack. This sleek yet highly functional back pack features integrated storage for diapers, wipes and toys, with an easy-access folding changing mat that stows in a custom compartment.

It is 17.5 inches deep so if you plan to take your laptop to the park or cafe (when the pandemic is over) you can securely fit it in this bag. It’s 100%woven fabric in the signature of this brand. This bad has large storage in the front pocket and external zippered side access to the changing mat when you don’t have two hands to manever the bag.

Because it is more of an adventure seeker backpag, it has a waterbottle pocket and a mesh container for yoru accessories.

I also like this non diaper bag version that is sold at Smallable.

There you have it! I hope this review was helpful to you and even if you don’t invest in one of these three bags, I hope this post gives you some ideas on what to look for when shopping for your sporty chic diaper back pack!

Good luck, parents and parents-to-be!

4 Ways New Moms Can Bond With Their Newborns

When your first baby is born, you’re probably a bit nervous about bonding. Breastfeeding is one of the more obvious bonding experiences that comes to mind, but if you’re having difficulty with it, you might feel like a failure and even wonder if you’ll ever bond with your child.

It’s hard to look at this brand-new little person and imagine that not long from now, they’re going to be covering you in kisses and calling you Mommy!

The good news is, you’ll soon find that their universe revolves around you and that they love you very much, but here’s some tips for some fun activities you can do with your baby/toddler to strengthen that bond even more.

SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT

We all love cuddles, right? Of course, so does your baby! In particular, the feeling of your warm skin against theirs is very soothing and pleasant for a baby. This unfamiliar new world that they are in can feel pretty scary sometimes, and a nice relaxing skin-to-skin cuddle with mommy is a great way to calm them down when they’re frightened or upset.

Skin-to-skin cuddling of your baby also has benefits you may not have been aware of. According to the International Breastfeeding Centre, skin-to-skin contact helps to stabilize the baby’s body temperature, heart and breathing rates, and immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth will colonize the baby with the same bacteria as the mother, which is believed to prevent allergies.

READING TO YOUR BABY

You can start reading to a baby straightaway! It might feel a little bit silly to be reading to a newborn, but your baby has been listening to your voice while in the womb for a while now and already finds it soothing. It’s easier to get into the reading habit now than when they’re a 4-year old racing around the house, so start reading now for great rewards later.

The experience of reading has so much to teach babies: the tactile sensation of the pages, the sounds of the words, the visuals of the pictures, etc.

Reading to your child benefits their language development, as they get used to the sounds and words. It also helps the baby to learn about the things they will see in their daily life. Make sure you point to the pictures while you’re reading the story, i.e. if there’s a train in the story, point to the train as you say the word “train”.

You’d be surprised before they even start to speak how many vocabulary words they will have committed to memory this way. But beyond development, this is also a shared experience, and before long they’re going to be following you around the house with board books asking you to read to them!

How to Minimize Kids Sugar Snacks During Quarantine

Photo by Patrick Fore on Unsplash

During quarantine, there are a lot of snacks being consumed because why not? We’re not going anywhere and snacking is something to do. However, we know that it is not necessarily a good thing.

If you’re a parent, at some point, you’re going to want to pull back on the sugary snacks a little.

The American Heart Association recommends that children consume less than 25 grams of added sugar per day.  That’s exactly six teaspoons.

In her new picture book Mommy Can I Eat This?health coach Maria Sofia reminds both parents and kids that it’s okay to enjoy sugary treats from time to time, as long as they do so in moderation.

In fact, she says, moderation is preferable to deprivation. How do you teach kids moderation and enforce it over time? She offers these three great tips

Take the “one bite per day” approach

Practice with a chocolate bar.  Rather than eat it all at once, break off a piece to have each day.  Determine in advance how many pieces there will be, and how many days the chocolate bar will last.  Set that expectation – and stick to it.

Play the Sugar Cube game

One sugar cube is equal to one teaspoon of sugar.  Allow your kids a total of five sugar cubes’ worth of sweets per day, using sugar cubes to demonstrate how much has been consumed.  Kids can save cubes up for a special treat, but must give cubes up if they eat too much sugar in a given day.

Reward moderation with non-food treats

Instead of putting surplus sugar cubes toward a big dessert, put them toward a special outing or event, such as a day at the zoo or an afternoon at the movies.  Make sure to bring your own snacks!

Good luck!
