Editor’s Weekend Shopping Fashion Picks

The temperature is dipping and it’s time to pull out the sweaters and booties out of storage, and to start layering.
Here are my top 5 picks for this weekend for those of you who may be supplementing their late fall wardrobes. J Brand Jeans skinny maternity are great for a casual weekend look. Everyone should be into warm comfortable sweaters and you cant go wrong with H&M‘s scoop neck sweater.
Splurge on a fab bag that you can go everywhere with and which will also be an eye-catching statement accessory. Proenza Schouler makes great saddle bags which are wonderful for keeping your hands free as you are out and about. Because leopard skin print endures, opt with booties in that design from Joie to give a monochromatic look some pop!
Finally, whether you’re working out or just running errands, Gap’s sweatshirt in a dark color is a good bet!

Get Vanessa Lachey’s Rachel Pally shower dress

http://api.shopstyle.com/action/apiVisitRetailer?id=460655406&pid=uid3121-8807761-31
Vanessa Minnillo Lachey looked supergorge in that black and white printed Rachel Pally dress during her baby shower this weekend.  A similar style, the Tapestry Aurora Dress is made of jersey material and therefore is forgiving and flatters all shapes.  The bohemian-inspired floor-sweeping dress has a wide neckline and billowy off the shoulder sleeves and can be worn fitted. It is reasonably priced at a little over $280 and would look fab on you too.

Trend: Lace bunny ears returneth!

Maison Michel Bunny ears became all the rage after being spotted on Lady Gaga and the Olsen twins in 2009.
Fashion forward Bellyitch BumpWatch alums Beyonce, Nicole Richie and Victoria Beckham wore them in 2012, as has Kim Kardasian, Gwyneth Paltrow and Khloe Kardasian in the past.

And it appears the quirky and eclectic feminine fashion accessory has made their way back (or never really left).
In a recent fashion spread, new mom MTV‘s Run’s House and Daddy’s Little Girls alum Vanessa Simmons wore a pair.
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
The new Project Runway: Threads  on Lifetime TV host even rocked them while sharing last minute Halloween costumes on Steve Harvey last week.

Celebrity Fall Maternity Styling Tutorial

This fall, if you aspire to look chic, trendy and stylish like some of our past Bellyitch Bumpwatch celebs, here are some tips to help you along.
1. Stick with basic solids. Black, White, Steel Gray, Red, Maroon, Pink, Beige are your go tos
2. Layer, layer, layer. You will be in various stages of feeling warm or cold anyway, so don’t put on too heavy clothes. Rather, start with a maternity tank, add a thin longsleeve jersey top over that, then top it with a sweater or blazer. Tights are good under skirts too.

3. Accessories are your friend. Update or make trendy any basic style palette by adding whimsical scarves in fun patterns like leopard print or pucci to add a spark of color to your look. Malin Akerman above does it well while shopping.
4. Big bag. Will Travel. Carry a tote for several reasons. Not only because they can fit a lot of your junk but also, a tote in a structure style is a great fall look.
5. Oh what a Booty! Go with booties in low heel styles to give you a little lift but help you stay stylish. The ones Kristin Cavallari, Gwen Stefani and Kim Kardashian are wearing in the graphic above are great funky options.
6. It’s a Wrap.  Finally, instead of a thick overcoat or jacket, get a warm pashmina  or other oversized scarf to drape over your look. It will polish it off perfectly!

Good luck styling ladies!

Remembering Oscar de la Renta: Biography

The fashion world mourns the loss of veteran fashion designer Oscar de la Renta who passed away at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer.
Every American First Lady from Jackie Kennedy to Michelle Obama has worn his designs and he had won every fashion award around; been honored by many philanthropic organizations and given many honorary degrees; and served on several charitable organizations’ boards.
Working right through the end, de la Renta had an eye for women’s fashion.
It figures, he was born Oscar Aristides Ortiz Renta Fiallo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the only boy in a family of 7 children.
He started his fashion career as a student in Madrid selling his fashion illustrations to earn money.

The then-young upstart eventually landed a plum job working for Cristobal Balenciaga in Madrid.
“I just learned by looking and observing. He was like God to me. ” Oscar de la Renta has said of Cristobal Balenciaga.

He then moved on to work as an assistant to Antonio del Castillo at Lanvin-Castillo, before getting a job designing for Elizabeth Arden in Manhattan, New York in America in 1963.
When Arden was reluctant to work with Oscar’s vision to create more ready-to-wear women’s clothing, he departed in 1965 to work for Jane Darby and eventually took over her label after Darby’s death.
“Everything Oscar does is feminine, romantic and appropriate. He’s not out there trying to be revolutionary, he just wants his clothes to be extremely attractive, and appropriate without being ‘old.’  If you look through his collection, he has a signature:  ‘Beautiful Clothes.'”  Anna Wintour, editor and chief of Vogue, has said of de la Renta.
He has stayed true to his aesthetic by refusing to sell out his line and keeping the company in the family.
His son-in-law Alex Bolen currently operates as Chief Executive Officer, and his step-daughter Eliza Bolen serves as Vice President of Licensing, at Oscar de la Renta, LLC.
Up until succumbing to cancer, he maintained control over his brand and because of that ensured the consistent quality and vision of his clothing.
He has dressed many of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms-to-be and alums including Kerry Washington, Jennifer Garner, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tina Fey, Jessica Alba and currently expecting stars Blake Lively and Rahcel Bilson.
Rest in Peace, Oscar.
Godspeed. Thank you for your talent and art. Your vision will live in on in fashion history.

#TGIT: Some complain The Limited’s new ‘Scandal’ collection is out of their budget

Today is “Thank God It’s Thursday” (#TGIT) on ABC when many tune into shows starring many Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums like Jessica Capshaw and Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy); Kerry Washington (Scandal) and our past featured mom Viola Davis   (How to get away with murder)

Now “Gladiators”, the name for Scandal fans can get the look of the show’s lead character crisis management expert Olivia Pope who is known for her polished, structured looks, which include trenchboats, wide-legged pants, angular dresses and clean lines.

It would be only a matter of time that someone would capitalize on the legions of female fans who crave to get the Pope look.

Show costume designer Lyn Paolo and Washington inked the deal to collaborate on the line for The Limited stores which launched on September 23.

“Our collection evokes the striking and aspirational style that has become synonymous with the Scandal brand and its heroine Olivia Pope,” head designer for The Limited says Elliot Staples said of the line,  “We believe the collection tells a story of confidence and professional sophistication as well as maintaining a strong feminine point of view.”

The only thing now we notice is that many of the women in the target market, including many African American women who helped fuel the fanatical following of the show have replied that they cannot afford the clothes which sell at a price point between $75 to $500, depending on the piece.

TREND ALERT: Plaid is hot again this FALL

I was not quite sure what to think about plaid, acid washed jeans and overalls trending again. I thought I left my grunge days in the 90s but alas, it’s hot again, seen on the runways plenty this Fall during various cities’ respective Fashion weeks.

What I do like about the resurface of the trend is the variety of ways it can be worn beyond just a collared button-down shirt. You can rock plaid scarves, tights, handbags and boots.  Of course, to avoid colossal fashion police no-nos avoid combining too many different plaids in one look and wearing it on more than one piece.
This rule is especially true if you are preggers. If you want to keep it simple, you can go with a basic plaid maternity dress or shirt if you are keen on staying current while baking your bun in the oven.

Have fun!
