How to Hide a Pregnancy better than Celebrities

When celebrity women are pregnant but have not yet announced it publicly, they try to wear clothing to conceal their bump. They are not always successful, however.
Eva Mendes who was spotted cupping her belly during the launch of her line with New York and Company the Los Cerritos Center on March 19, 2014 in Cerritos, California  amidst rumors she was knocked up with then boyfriend Ryan Gossling’s baby.
Also, a normally scantily clad Shakira raised eyebrows when she had her signature abs covered while performing during the closing of this year’s World Cup in Brazil.
And Zoe Saldana had no one fooled while wearing an odd attachment to her skirt she wore with a sheer print Louis Vuitton blouse while promoting  Guardians of the Galaxy at the Dolby Theatre on July 21, 2014 in Hollywood, California.
Luckily, non-celebrity women have other options and don’t have to be so…um creative.

Here are 5 tips for hiding a pregnancy:

1. Hiding morning sickness. You  may have one challenge to not be caught by a co-worker throwing up in the bathroom. If you work in a multi-level office environment, use the bathroom on another floor. Chances are the people from those other floors won’t know who you are or won’t recognize the shoes to the woman losing her lunch in the stall next door.
2. Shielding alcohol avoidance. You may be known to NOT skip a drink offer. So if it would be uncharacteristic of you to say no to booze,  take the glass when offered and pretend to sip it. Then replace the liquid with alcohol-free version when no one is looking. If it’s white wine, replace it with apple juice if convenient. If it’s pure vodka, water works. If it’s rum and coke, get just the coke.
3. Covering up the Early Pregnancy Look. There is a certain look that women who are suffering from morning sickness get: glazed eye, red nose, puffy cheeks are indications of vomiting and dealing with nausea. It’ll be hard, but just try. Also, don’t look too dumpy because that is a dead give-away that something is up. Keep your hair coiffed and keep wearing make up even if you’re feeling queezie and not up to it. If you have to heave, reapply your make up so you don’t look so green coming out of the restroom.
4. Disguising the hand on the tummy posture. You may feel the uncanny urge to rest your hand on your tummy. It’s an unexplainable phenomenon. Try to be conscious where your hands are and make an effort to keep them at your hips or another natural place OTHER than resting on your tummy…LIKE A PREGNANT WOMAN! A couple of years ago, when Mariah Carey was pregnant and before suffering her miscarriage, many outlets, including this blog, reported that she MUST have been pregnant based on that photograph alone! (see right)
5. Dressing to Hide a growing bump. Finally, dress in chunky but hip sweaters or A-line or empire waist tops or dresses to take the focus away from your tummy. Keep it fresh and trendy so it appears that you are wearing those tummy hiding outfits for style, not for the convenience of hiding a pregnancy you don’t want someone to know about.

Kate Middleton’s Maternity Style Picks: Take II

With confirmation that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting the second royal baby with her husband Prince William, we say let the bump watch begin and the maternity style watch as well. Last round, we complained that Kate Middleton‘s style, while pristine, crisp, cultured and well-put together worked well, it was a bit on the boring side. We longed for more playful experimentation with whimsical scarves and cluthes or toppers and such. Alas, being a princess means you have to be on the conservative and safe side. So, we’ve given up.

Here are our top picks for Kate’s wardrobe this round:

For a daytime visit, we recommend the Vince Short Sleeve Drop Shoulder Maternity Dress by A Pea in the Pod.

For a formal state or business event, we recommend the Isabella Oliver Ellon Maternity Dress.

On a night out during a formal evening affair, Kate would turn heads in this Lace Amelia maternity dress from Tiffany Rose in Windsor Blue!

Tongues would certainly be flapping if Kate stepped out in pants, wearing one of her fave designers from her first pregnancy, Love by Top Shop, during a casual tour of a facility or at the opening of a hospital ward.

Trend Alert: Fall Black and White is back!

The Black and White trend is back for Fall 2014 and we noticed quite a few of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums have recently rocked the trend on the red carpet to events.
We are loving the script art crop top and matching pants that Mel B wore at the America’s Got Talent’ Post-Show Red Carpet held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Jennifer Lopez too was spotted in the black and white during the New Orleans stop at the American Idol  auditions tour. She wore a  $3,490 Valentino Bow Embellished Wool Blend dress.

Bellyitch blogger Posh (middle) and many of her friends who joined her to celebrate her birthday earlier this year wore Black and White and it wasn’t even planned that way.

Pregnant ladies too can rock the trend in black and white maternity dresses this season or mixing it up like the celebs in the featured header post above.

Trend Alert: Fall Leopard Print while Preggers

One of the fall’s trends we’ve spottedthat will play big this fall is leopard. As we know, many woman do not feel comfortable wearing prints while pregnant over fear they may make them look even larger than they already all as they expand in belly girth. Good thing there are many ways to work the trend, specifically via accessories.
Here are examples of how to pull off he leopard trend while pregnant:
1. Belt – Wear it above the bump and below the breast bone
2. Jewelry – It can be subtle, but going bold makes more of a statement
3. Scarf – You don’t have to do brown leopard either, mix it up with colorful as well
4. SmartPhone Case – Show off your trend savvyness by carrying a leopard print coverd smart phone
5. Shades – Finally, polish off any look with some funky leopard sunglasses with large frames.

10 Things Your Fall Maternity Wardrobe must Include

This fall, as you shop for your wardrobe for essentials to last you through the season whilst carrying a baby while pregnant or as a new mom, keep in mind some of these basic pieces.
If you start your capsule collection in your wardrobe with these key wardrobe items, you will be well on your way to establishing a foundation of basics and can go from there.

1. Black Dress – The classic black dress comes in maternity styles and is a perfect thing to wear for a variety of outings, date nights, corporate parties, concerts and more!

2. Wrap dress – A wrap dress is THE best option, especially in black, for any event. It works well in casual, after 5 or more formal occasions. Use accessories and shoes to make it appropriate.

3. Fitted Suit –  Even if you cannot find a suit tailored to your belly, a blazer that fits on the shoulders but is tapered at the waist and a matching pair of maternity slacks will do. It’s not easy to wear a traditional suit with extra belly, but it can be done.

4. White Collared Button Down Shirt  – Every woman must own a white button down collar shirt in her wardrobe. A crisp shirt is great for the office or weekend.

5. Silk Scarf – A colorful silk scarf will add the spark of flavor and style to a monochromatic or otherwise vanilla outfit.

6. Khaki pants – Khaki pants can complement a variety of tops and are casual but can still be pulled of at more formal events or venues if paired with some pears or a twin set.

7. A Tote – A staple for any woman whether she is preggers or not is a handbag tote that can fit all of her essentials and then some. These can double as a diaper bag too if necessary and are more stylish than typical diaper bags.

8. Bulky Sweater – A bulky sweater is your friend when the temperature drops and even if you are going into venues with the air conditioning still blasting. Get them in dark colors that can complement whatever you are wearing.

9. Diamond Studs – Classic studs can be dressed up or down and if you are toting around an infant, she won’t yank them out your ear as she would a pair of hoops.

10. Stretchable Boots – that can expand as your calves grown and that have more give so it is not too constraining and tough on your circulation

My pick for Michelle Obama’s African State Dinner Dress

Yesterday, US President Barack Obama,  a son of an African man, hosted the most heads of states at the White House at the same time during a formal dinner to commemorate the end of the African Leaders Summit.

First Lady Michelle Obama opted to wear a gorgeous neon yellow dress by Nepal-born designer Prabal Gurung and looked phenomenal as usual in the beautifully feminine chiffon dress by the fashion veteran who only became a United States citizen last year. Score one for immigrants! She accented the look with oversized gold earrings and gold bangles.

I must admit, though, that I yearned for her to dress in an African design especially given that her husband’s lineage directly links to Kenya. I do understand the importance of not necessarily playing politics and being neutral.

Dr. Jill Biden, the Second Lady and wife to Vice President Joe Biden, however, did go with an African wax print dress with origins to Congo.  A Washington Post  piece noted how Dr. Biden met many African women involved in textile trade as a means of earning money for themselves, their families and community, and wanted to pay homage to those women she met on her recent journey.

Bravo!

I thought to use this opportunity to highlight again one of my favorite local African designer Finda Onuigbo, a Nigerian immigrant who lives in Maryland and is the go-to designer for West African print ball gowns and dresses. She designs and hand crafts and sews each design custom-made for her clients and makes a living doing so. So can’t wait to see her take off to the next level.

Anyway, hat tip to my pals Marie Bangura of Millie’s Bites and Kay Savvy for putting me on to Finda.

If I had a say in the matter, I would’ve outfitted Mrs. O to dress in the stunning Finda Creations above, an orange top and skirt wax fabric dress with a blue sash at the waist, above, modeled by the gorgeous Sierra Leonean-American model Sarran Jabbie.

Here are a few other fave Finda Creations of mine:
