The 7 Reason Mothers Don’t Take Alone Time (INFOGRAPHIC)

no alone time

It would be unheard of for an employed person to work 365 days of a year without taking a vacation. Motherhood involves 24 hour work at times, yet many moms do not take alone time.  There are many reasons mothers don’t get much needed alone time. Sometimes it’s the circumstances and sometimes we get in our own way. Here are 7 reasons (and an infrographic) why personal time escapes many mothers.

  1. Mothers have to do everything – Some moms believe that nothing, absolutely nothing, will get done without them. They need to oversee every detail of family life and make sure things are running smoothly. As long as they have that outlook and it works for everyone concerned, chances are nothing is going to change.
  2. Perfectionism – The perfect mother doesn’t need alone time, or so she thinks. Trying to live up to the unattainable image of the supermom is a sure way to crash and burn.
  3. Demanding kids – Sometimes little ones can be extremely demanding; Mom cannot even go to the bathroom alone. Children like this want to know where Mommy is every minute and she’d better not get out of their eyesight. The idea of alone time for such a mom is just a pipe dream.
  4. Absentee Fathers– If you have a husband that doesn’t support your alone time, it might be much harder to get. Some fathers are kind enough to take the kids while Mom goes off and does something she wants to do or maybe even stays home and takes a bubble bath. But for the mother who doesn’t have that kind of support at home, finding the time to be by herself can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Mothers who don’t have a backup parent or other family support around them can find it especially difficult to find time for themselves. Trading babysitting favors with other single moms and making time in the early morning or late evenings when the kids are in bed may be options for these moms.
  5. Over scheduled – Similar to the busy mom this mom is always on the go, but she has some down time. The only problem is that her down time is spent with other people. She’s waiting for the kids to do this or that, she’s at dance rehearsals or foot ball practice. With a little help she could actually manage to get some alone time in there somewhere.
  6. Too busy – Some mothers are workaholics and doing too much all the time to take a break. Every minute is planned and used to the max. This mom gets tons of things accomplished, except perhaps some much needed self care.
  7. Guilt feelings – There are mothers who just feel so guilt ridden about taking private time for themselves, they can’t bring themselves to do it. It feels as if they are stealing time away from the family.

Do first time pregnant women expect a Mother’s Day gift? (INFOGRAPHIC)

First time pregnant moms may be excited for this Mother’s Day even though their baby isn’t born yet. Many expect a gift on Mother’s Day from their significant other.
Unfortunately, there is a disconnect. In a recent survey of first time moms and their spouses by EMA agency, 60 percent of first time pregnant women said they expect a Mother’s Day gift from their partner. However, 60 percent of soon-to-be dads surveyed didn’t think their significant other would be expecting a gift.
But honestly, one could understand how a dad-to-be with a partner only in her first trimester could not think to get her a gift.
Either way, it could be a dicey situation this Sunday!
Check out this infographic that sums it up and share this with a dad-to-be near you.

Attitude of The New Social Media Era of Expecting Moms (INFOGRAPHIC)

Believe it or not, December launched conception season!
It’s the time of year that most babies are conceived given that 10 of the most common birthdays are in the month of September.
In particular, December 17th thru 31st  are  the most common conception date with being December 24 being the most common.
And we are in the era of the social media pregnancy as a recent survey by Wakefield research for Natera, a leader in non-invasive genetic screening, found that 83% of the 500 expecting moms surveyed planned to share all their baby moments with friends online.
About 47% of them plan to post updates 2-3 times a week to keep their Facebook friends up-to-date on their baby-baking journey.
The survey also found that 3/4ths or 79% of those surveyed will find out in advance their baby’s gender.
And for older moms like the 40 plus celebrities who gave birth after 40 (above), genetic testing is even more important given the increased risks for birth defects in their babies. Knowing as far in advance as possible can be essential
Companies like the new Panorama™ NIPT, which sponsored the survey, have created genetic screenings that can test for abnormaliites as early as 9 weeks via a routing blood draw and without all the invasive screenings like with amniocentesis which carries a miscarriage risk.
There is a bonus in that this new test can screen for gender at an accuracy rate of >99%! That is super early in the pregnancy! Amazing! Would you do use the screening?

Fashion, High Heels and Pregnant women explained (INFOGRAPHIC)

The Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week is wrapping to a close and we spotted at least one pregnant celeb at runway shoes wearing very sensible low heels.

When women are pregnant, their center of gravity and weight shift and are off balance. This fact combined with extreme high heels can be an utter disaster.  A topple can be dangerous to you and your unborn baby especially if a terrible fall lands you on your tummy.
This discussion represents an excellent opportunity to share top podiatrists Dr. Catherine Cheung and Dr. Bob Baravarian‘s tips from their recent post at HelloMD on wearing high heels.
It included this awesome visual infographic.

Is the “Common Core” curriculum ruining your child’s life? (INFOGRAPHIC)

To better enable American kids to compete globally with other “First World” nations that have been surpassing the US in reading, math, science and other subjects, a curriculum change called “Common Core State Standards” became popular. The new paradigm focuses on training children to be critical thinkers, analytic and objective.
Further, some in the business community complained that the caliber of students graduating from various US high schools lacked essential skills to be competent workers. Common Core proponents want close to standardization of the curriculum in all states so that all children learned the same level or way, irrespective if they were from a wealthy district in Connecticut or a poor one in Alabama. The initiative was backed by the business industry and many jurisdictions began implementing the changes. Some states adopted it and others didn’t.
It faced a swift backlash from parents who complained that the curriculum put too much pressure on children, taught them how to take a test rather than to learn and enjoy the learning experience, and was uneccessary. Many felt that state and local differences exist for a reason and schooling should remain a local issue.
Supporters maintain that states are free to opt in or out, and that the challenging coursework creates smarter and more equipped children. They also state the program is flexible and can accommodate teachers and local schools’ styles and preferences.
The folks at BestGraduateSchools.com created an infographic which presents Common Core from the position of those who are against the curriculum. Take a look and share your thoughts.

Dads’ love, Happy Moms & being Active make Happy Kids (INFOGRAPHIC)

What makes a happy kid? Dads, a happy mom, being active and living in Mexico!
Happify.com‘s latest infographic qualifying what makes children happy determined that feeling loved by a father was even more important for a kids’ well being than feeling loved by mom. It also discovered that when a mom is happy , a kid is too.  Mom’s satisfaction with her life impact’s a young child’s social and emotional skills more so than her education, income and job status.
It also ranked 12 countries in world and found that while the United States came in 5th, Mexico came in first!

Are you losing the weight loss battle with fad diets? (INFOGRAPHIC)

So our  friends at Pritkin Longevity Center created a new infographic for me to share with you that is my story. *sigh*. The perpetual fad dieter.
It says that the months of February an March are common for people failing or cheating on their diets.
When trying to shed weight, many of us turn to fad diets and drastic calorie cutting and with the positive energy of new years resolutions in the past and the cold winter months still in full force, it is not surprising that February and March are the most common months for diet failure and “cheating” to occur.
Experts at nationally recognized Pritikin Longevity Center have found that fad diets leave us not only hungry and miserable but often lead to setbacks and cheating that cause additional weight gain. dang!
Check out the infographic below “Are You Losing the Diet Game?” which visually outlines ways that your weight loss journey can be effected by your dieting and lifestyle decisions and reveals the true impact that common dieting mistakes can have on your weight loss and overall health.
