Nicki Minaj Gave Birth to Her First Child

“#Preggers,” captioned her first post. She followed up with another message, “Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes.”

The couple got married one year ago this month.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend Lose Their Third Child Prematurely

Tragic news for TV host and model Chrissy Teigen and her husband singer John Legend who lost their third child after Teigen suffered pregnancy complications.

The couple shared the news on their respective social media accounts.

“We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” the couple said in a formal statement posted to each of their Twitter pages.

Teigen was taken to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Sunday after revealing that she had been on bed rest and bleeding for “a little less than a month.”

Sadly, it appears the bleeding might have been signs of the baby in stress.

“We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions,” the post said. “It just wasn’t enough.”

On Teigen’s Instagram account on Wednesday night, she shared that she and her husband had decided to call the baby Jack.

With the first two pregnancies, the statements said the couple waited to name the baby until after delivering, but this time they had already begun calling “the little guy in my belly” Jack.

“He will always be Jack to us,” the statement said. “Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.”

The celebrity couple are parents to 4-year old daughter Luna and 2-year old son Miles, both conceived via in vitro fertilization.

Teigen was recently quoted stating that she felt the IVF pregnancies were “untouchable and safe”  but that her third pregnancy conceived without medical intervention felt fragile or “eggshelly” as she described it.

The family seems determined to grieve but grow stronger because of undergoing this ordeal.

“But everyday can’t be full of sunshine,” they said. “On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it.”

26.09.2020 . 6am Kelsey woke me up telling me she had been losing her water, I immediately jumped out of bed and said alright let’s go, she stayed calm and replied with a laugh and said, no we are not going yet. I then asked to call our midwives to which she replied again no let’s just wait for awhile. . 7:15am we call our friend to come photograph the labour, the midwife and doula. Once the midwife arrived she checked out the progress and we were surprised to learn Kelsey was already 5cm dilated. The midwife asked if she was ready to go to the birthing centre or wanted to try out that bath at home and Kelsey, still remaining calm, decided to try the bath at home. While I was filling up the bath things started escalating quickly, the contractions were much stronger lasting over a minute and were anywhere from 2-3 min apart. The midwife then said she thought we should head to the clinic and finally Kelsey agreed it was time. . 8:40am. We arrived at the Björkin, the birthing centre, after a quick 10 min drive. Right away Kelsey knew exactly what she wanted and asked how long until the birthing pool would be filled. The next fifteen minutes Kelsey paced around between contractions waiting for the tub to be filled. . 9:00am She was in the tub and immediately started to push. Things escalated super quickly. Throughout it all she did amazing. She was in complete control of her mind and body. She had strong opinions on exactly what she wanted and where she wanted to be. I am completely in awe of how strong she is, and so proud of her for everything she did to prepare herself throughout her pregnancy. It cannot be put into words how proud I am and how I feel about this experience. . 11:19am After an extremely hard 2 hours and 19 mins of pushing our healthy, strong, beautiful boy arrived weighing 3530 grams, 52 cm long. . To finish the most beautiful, awe inspiring labour was the most wonderful phone call to my daughter to introduce her to her new little brother ❤️ . 5:30pm We arrive back at home both mom and baby doing super well and spent our first night as three together. . We have decided on a name and cannot wait to share it with you all soon.

Make Your Own Bath Bombs In 4 Easy Steps

It’s raining a heck of a lot in my part of the world and so much so that our outdoor fun and activities are becoming limited. I’m on the hunt for fun indoor things to do with the kids. I’m a  fan of pampering products, natural oils and the like so I thought it would be fun to create our very own bath bombs to make bathtime fun again!

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

The kids haven’t been able to enjoy bathtub toys since they were little. With bath bombs, a casual bath can turn into a relaxing and visually stimulating time watching the bombs of florals, swirls, fragrances, glitter and more explode and fizzle in the tub.

I got this recipe from Popular Science:

Stats:

    • Time: 10 minutes of work, several hours of drying time
    • Cost: About $2 per bomb if you make a dozen and more if you add biodegradable glitter—but prices drop if you make a big batch
    • Difficulty: Easy

Tools & Materials

Instructions

STEP ONE

First, mix the dry ingredients (baking soda, Epsom salt, corn starch, and citric acid) together in a large bowl. Use the whisk to make sure the mixture is clump-free. Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a key ingredient in this bathtub explosion: When the high pH powder reacts with a low pH acid, it produces carbon dioxide bubbles. Remember those baking soda and vinegar volcanoes you made in elementary school? Citric acid takes the place of vinegar in this chemical equation, but it doesn’t react with sodium bicarbonate until it gets wet. If you want, you can add visual decorations like biodegradable glitter into the mix. Just don’t use regular-old craft glitter, because it’s no good for our friends in the ocean.

STEP TWO

Mix the wet ingredients (oil, water, essential oil, and food coloring). The easiest way to do this is  to put them in a jar and shake them up. This is the step where you need to make some important decisions about scent. You can tweak quantity to suit your taste, but you should use about two teaspoons total of essential oil or perfume. Try cinnamon, cocoa, peppermint, or coffee scents for the winter holidays (or a combination of all four to make a mocha-licious bath). Or go with something classic, like a spa-like eucalyptus and lavender mix or a straight-up sugary hit of vanilla extract. The possibilities are truly endless. It’s also time to make decisions about color.

Pop Sci recommends sticking to a single hue to avoid accidentally muddying the bath waters. Stick to something like 4-6 drops of food coloring total, but feel free to mix up different pigments.

STEP THREE

Slowly add the liquid to the dry mixture. Really slowly. Like a teaspoon at a time. Whisk as you go, and slow down if things start to look fizzy. You should end up with a mixture that just barely clumps together, like damp sand.

STEP FOUR

Stuff that stuff into your silicone molds, ASAP. You don’t want the mix to dry out while it’s still in the bowl, which is why you should make sure you have enough molds to make a dozen or more bombs at once.

Press the mixture down firmly into your silicone molds of choice.

Let the bath bombs dry. If your mold has a lot of details in it, you might just want to give them a whole day to be safe. Then pop them out.

Throw one into the tub and enjoy the explosive fruits of your labor. Bag the rest up in cellophane and make your friends and family love you forever.

Enjoy!

Pandemic Halloween: CDC Recommends No Trick-Or-Treating

Photo by Yuting Gao from Pexels

In a year that’s been plenty scary, this much is clear: Pandemic Halloween will be different than regular Halloween. Many traditional ways of celebrating are now considerably more frightful than usual, because now they bring the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

Accordingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. No big surprise: Classic door-to-door trick-or-treating and crowded, boozy costume parties are not recommended.

The CDC’s guidelines group Halloween activities into lower-risk, moderate-risk and higher-risk buckets.

The higher-risk category includes both door-to-door trick-or-treating and events where kids get treats from the trunks of cars in a big parking lot.

Also no-nos: indoor haunted houses where people will be crowded and screaming, which could send infectious particles flying. Going on hayrides with people who aren’t in your household or fall festivals in rural areas also carry a risk of spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. And using alcohol and drugs “can cloud [judgment] and increase risky behaviors,” the CDC warns — though that’s equally true in any season.

How to get your thrills instead?

The agency says this way of trick-or-treating poses a moderate risk (compared with the higher risk of the traditional style): Kids could pick up individually wrapped gift bags at the end of a driveway or yard while still preserving social distance.

You could also organize a small outdoor costume parade where everyone is 6 feet apart. An outdoor costume party would also be considered moderate risk, if people wear masks and stay 6 feet away from each other.

Haunted houses are out, and haunted forests are in. The CDC says an open-air scare-fest is moderately risky, so long as the route is one-way, people wear masks appropriately and stay 6 feet apart. But there’s a caveat: “If screaming will likely occur, greater distancing is advised.”

What about apple picking and pumpkin patches? Risks can be reduced if people use hand sanitizer before touching pumpkins or apples, wear masks and maintain social distance.

Also on the moderate-risk list: an outdoor scary movie night with local friends who are socially distanced. Again: The more screaming there is, the more space is needed for safe social distancing.

If you want to be really safe? Then you need to plan for either virtual activities or ones that you do largely with your own household.

CDC: Pregnant Women have These Extra Steps To Take to Prevent Contracting the Coronavirus

OITNB Danielle Brooks

Photo from OITNB’s Danielle Brooks pregnancy web series

This Summer, a 5-month pregnant Louisiana woman died from coronavirus and was miraculously survived by her premature baby doctors delivered via emergency c-section while they simultaneouly performed CPR on the mom in their failed attempt to save her life.

Following Allie Guidry‘s death at Women’s Hospital in Batoln Rouge in June, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that pregnant women with COVID-19 could be at a higher risk of more severe symptoms.

So not only do you have to undergo the stress of pregnancy, labor, delivery and caring for a newborn, but the road to these latter hardships during a pandemic start during pregnancy.

The CDC recently conducted a study that notes pregnant women with COVID-19 are more likely to be hospitalized and require higher levels of care than women who are not pregnant.

To minimize exposure to the virus, doctors recommend steering clear of large crowds and avoid going out in public when possible. The self-isolation is especially important during the last two weeks of pregnancy, physicians say.

To cap this all off, if the mom has a pre-existing underlying health condition, she could have an even tougher challenge  fighting off the coronavirus if she contracts COVID-19.

“The thing I have seen most commonly would be obesity, hypertension, and diabetes,” Dr. Marshall St. Amant said, a physician at Woman’s Hospital.

Another contributing factor to consider is the strength of the immune system.

“Cell-mediated immunity is when you make antibodies against something, and that’s something that goes along with pregnancy. So, we have known for years that women have increase rates of viral infections during pregnancy,” Dr. Marshall St. Amant said.

Here is an abbreviated checklist of precautions courtesy of the CDC:

10+ Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Quotes to Inspire Girls, Women and Everyone

The second woman to ever be appointed to sit on the United States Supreme Court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away today at home after a long battle with pancreatic cancer and several other ailments and accidents.

Her legacy is lasting consiting mainly of her pro-women stances in her legal opinions and inspiring others through her own life and rise to the top of the highest court in the land.  Ginsburg was known for her scathing dissents against rulings by majority conservative justices and her once rigorous work out regimen after age 80.

By the last few years, Ginsburg became a pop icon and was given the name “The Notorious RBG” after the late rapper The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls (aka Christopher Wallace) because of her sharp rebuke of policies or practices that sidelined women.

Memes, artwork and photos of her downing a crown similar to the one worn by the Notorious B.I.G. during a 1997 portrait session—the rapper’s last recorded photo shoot before he was shot and killed in Los Angeles three days later.

In addition to her legendery legacy, Ginsburg  also leaves behind some pretty prolific words that can inspire, motive and enlighten and uplift women, girls and people of all genders, races and creeds. Here are a select few sourced from my Pinterest Quotes page where you can find the original source which I will add later to this post.

New Study Says Teens Are Less Religious Than Parents

A Pew Research Center study released in September shows that teens’ religious practice is less than that of their parents. The lessened observance cuts across all denominational lines.

And religious practice by adults, the study noted, has itself declined in recent decades.

One key finding of the report is that 43% of parents said religion is “very important in their lives,” and that, of teens ages 13-17, only 24% feel the same.

Surveys were taken of 1,811 adults who had given Pew permission for one of their teen children to later take the same survey. The surveys were conducted in April-June 2019, long before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

9 Moms Competed in 2020 US Open Tennis, Mom Victoria Azarenka Wins Runner Up

This year’s US Open featured nine mothers, the most ever in tournament history.

Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Tsvetana Pironkova made the final rounds and Kim Clijsters, Vera Zvonareva, Tatjana Maria, Olga Govortsova, Kateryna Bondarenko and Patricia Maria Tig were formidable opponents in the early rounds.

Williams is featured in a lot of campaigns that celebrate woment’s professional tennis players who are mothers

And this year, there has been a lot of celebration of semi-finalist Azarenka who gave birth of her son, Leo, after winning back to back Australian Opens titles in 2012 and 2013.

She once thought pregnancy would end her career.

When asked about her come back durind the press conference after the 27 seed upset fellow Belarusianto, 5th seed  Aryna Sabalenka , she said:

“Pretty incredible, huh?”

“Well, there is a lot that goes into it in terms of balancing, you know, a lot of things, and juggling two things.

“But identifying myself or other players just as mothers, I think that’s not the only thing that we are. I think we are part of, you know, being a mother, we are also tennis players. We are also women who have dreams and goals and passions.

“So that’s, I think, being a role as a mom. Everybody has their own priority, they have their own list of where they rank being a mother is, but we are not – it’s not just being a mother. Your life doesn’t stop.”

She had custody battles with her son’s dad and had to overcome several injuries and other personal issues to almost triumph once again.

And finally, she has joined Williams as a leader and advocate for fellow female competitors:

Last year, Azarenka and Williams, along with Venus Williams, Johanna Konta and several other stars, successfully campaigned for the introduction of improved ranking protection for expectant mothers playing on the circuit.

Prior to the 2019 season, female players had to return from giving birth or injury within three years to be able to utilize a special ranking for eight tour events in a year.

However, this year, players returning from childbirth or injury can use their previously held ranking to enter up to 12 tournaments during a three-year period.

They will also not be required to face a seeded player in the first round of a tournament. Azarenka said: “We have the power to change the rules and we have done.” The 29-year-old says that “is what [she] wants [her] legacy to be”.

Azarenka, Williams, Clisters and all the moms are proving that mothers can do it all.

Kim Clijsters won three of her 4 Grand Slams after the birth of her child.

Lindsay Davenport won 3 of her 55 Career titles after giving birth to her son.

And Olympic Gold medalist and seven times Grand slam winner, in 1914, Dorothea Lambert Chambers became the first mother to win a Grand Slam crown.
