Egg Donation: What To Know If You’ve Ever Considered It

A lot of couples these days can only start their families via medical intervention. Many women of advanced ages, with medical conditions that inhibits their ability to produce eggs to be fertilized, rely on egg donation to enable them to start the process of having a  child.

If you’ve completed your family, have not yet and have ever considered donating one of your healthy eggs to a family in need, here is a primer of things to consider.

Egg donation isn’t a topic you hear about very often. It isn’t widely talked about in public and, unless you already know someone who’s donated or received eggs, you probably don’t know much about it. In this article, you’ll learn more about what’s involved and find there are many reasons and many things for you to consider before deciding if donating is right for you.

Why Donate?

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question. There are financial and noble reasons to donate. Some women donate to earn money to pay for schooling or other interests. Some women feel the call to help otherwise infertile women conceive, carry, and deliver a baby. Others may want to help LGBTQ couples start a family. Many women donate for a combination of these reasons.

Requirements

Healthy eggs are a very important component to successful egg retrieval and implantation. For this reason, egg donors must meet certain requirements to ensure egg viability. At a minimum, women are required to be:

  • Between 21 and 33 years of age
  • Free of tobacco products and drugs
  • Free of STDs
  • In good mental, emotional, and physical health
  • Available for 3 months
  • Able to self-inject required medications

Legal Rights

You’ll be expected to sign contracts to absolve yourself of legal rights to your donated eggs and confirm you understand the risks involved in donating. Additionally, recipients sign contracts to prevent them from holding you responsible for any children born from your eggs.

Other conditions, like your anonymity preference, will be included in the contract. You can choose to remain anonymous or choose to be identified after a child turns 18 years old. It’s important to do what feels right to you. If you desire to have a future relationship with any potential child, it’s best to be upfront about it so you can be paired with a recipient who’s open to it.

Process

Screening

You’ll be screened and evaluated through a series of tests to ensure you meet the physical and legal requirements previously mentioned. The testing includes blood panels, genetic testing, psychological evaluations, and medical history examinations. You’ll also complete questionnaires to disclose your professional and education background, and your interests.

The results of your screening become part of your donor profile and help potential egg recipients decide whether or not you’re the right donor for them.

Egg Stimulation and Collection

Once you pass screening, you’ll be ready to have your ovaries stimulated by medicines designed to help produce several mature eggs. You’ll be asked to self-inject the medication your doctor prescribes or find someone to help you do it. Frequent, sometimes daily, trips to the doctor will be necessary to check your body’s response to the medication. At these visits, you’ll likely have blood drawn and have a transvaginal ultrasound to carefully monitor your health and to accurately time the release of your eggs.

Medication will then be used again to trigger your ovaries to release the mature eggs you produced. While under light anesthesia, your eggs will be retrieved using a thin needle and – if it isn’t a fresh egg donation – cryogenically stored until your eggs are matched with potential parents.

Recovery and Side Effects

You’ll have a recovery period during which you and your doctor will monitor your progress and identify potential side effects. Common physical side effects may include light bleeding, abdominal pain and cramping, or constipation. Your experience may vary, but most egg donors resume their normal activities within a few days.

One riskier side effect, which can occur before or after retrieval, is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). With OHSS, high levels of HCG dilate your ovarian blood vessels, causing swelling and fluid leakage. The sooner your doctor can diagnose OHSS, the easier it can be treated and managed, leading to a faster recovery. Severe abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sudden weight gain are all symptoms indicative of OHSS.

Emotions

While egg donation requires obvious physical and time sacrifices, the emotional impact is less obvious. You’ll be prone to experiencing a range of emotions – nervousness, sadness, excitement, joy – that can change over time. This is normal and you should give yourself the time you need to prepare for and recover emotionally. It may help to know your egg recipients are receiving a gift that will have an enduring positive emotional impact on their lives.

Is Egg Donation an Option for You?

Egg donation is an excellent option for many women and might be right for you, too. Only you can decide.

What Winter Shade to Rock Now!

Winter calls winter nail colors. Depending on your personality, where you work, and how far you’re willing to take it, you can go for fun, funky, conservative, whimsical or whatever.

Currently, I’m rocking a shimmery and glittery deep shade of blue but I’m a blogger and I have flexibility and no longer work in a strict corporate environment where blue nail polish may be looked down upon.

I curated my fave shades and designs and updated them on my Bellyitch Pinterest nail page where you can see the credits for these:

See How Big Beyonce’s 18-Month Old Twins Are Now in Recent Snaps

Want to see how big Beyonce‘s 18-month old twins Rumi and Sir are now?

The “Apesh*t” performer and her hubby Shaw “Jay Z” Carter with their eldest daughter Blue Ivy and other family members headed out to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York on Christmas Eve to admire, snap and celebrate a new park bench dedicated to Jay’s grandmother, Hattie White

The celebration was a private affair as they were not ornately dressed and did not invite the press or anyone else to tag along. Nonetheless, news leaked and paparazzi caught lots of pics that can be seen over at the Daily Mail!

Bey was outfitted in a large white floor length parka with her long waist length braids parted down the middle and she wore no make up, it appears.

Blue had on an army green parka and jeans with the twins outfitted in coordinated pants, Timberland boots and parkas.

The guest of honor, Ms. White, was photographed with her hand over her heart looking in awe and amazement and later with her twin great grandkids on the bench. Her grandson, “444” producer was also casually dressed for the occasion that took place a day before the family boarded a private jet back to Los Angeles for Christmas!

The family has had an incredible year that included their tremendously successful “On the Run II” Tour, Bey’s Coachella performances and a hit joint album that garnered lots of Grammy nominations and critical acclaim! The year culminated fantastically during a show stopping performance in South Africa at the Global Citizens Festival!

Why You Should Declutter Your Home For the New Year

For the New Year, a lot of people plan to clean house, literally and figuratively. Clutter does more than create dust and crowd spaces.

According to a recent survey by UK Blinds retailer Blinds Hut, 82% of people’s mood is affected by clutter in some way.

In fact, recent studies have shown that the average person has 3,370 cubic feet of their home packed with items that they rarely or never use. The researchers explained how clutter impacts on our senses and make it difficult to focus on important or difficult tasks.

Clutter can invade both our physical and mental space, stopping us from thinking creatively and productively.  More findings about clutter include:

  • 66.5% of people have argued over clutter with a cohabitant
  • 10% of the public wait months before dealing with clutter
  • Nearly a quarter of respondents admitted to having worn less than 25% of the clothes in their wardrobe in the past year.
  • We keep Over $10 Billion worth of unused clothes in our wardrobes.

Check out Blind Hut’s interactive article of the Top 70 things that clutter homes the most, which can be found here: https://www.blinds-hut.co.uk/blogs/main/70-things-that-clutter-up-british-homes-the-most

Bravo TV Andy Cohen and the New Single Dad Parenthood via Surrogacy Trend

Only 3 percent of single men in America, like actor Hill Harper, adopt children, yet there is apparently a growing trend of single men turning to surrogacy, according to recent reports.

Bravo TV‘s Andy Cohen is about to join this community that includes 3-times surrogate dad soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, when his surrogate gives birth in a few weeks!

The TV host and network founder announced on the December 20 edition of his nightly talk show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that he is going to be a father.

“In about six weeks time, I’m going to become a father thanks to a wonderful surrogate who is carrying my future,” the soon-to-be single dad announced at the end of he show’s season.

In a blog post on the network’s Daily Dish Blog, an expert explains the trend:

“There are many reasons why some men don’t start a family in their 20s or 30s. But it’s not too late to have a child, even if you don’t have a wife or a female partner? Single men who want to have a biological child of their own, both gay and straight, are starting to turn to IVF and surrogacy,” reports WINfertility, an organization which assists men in becoming single fathers.

“It’s not a simple process — basically, a single man who wants to be a dad needs an egg donor, a gestational surrogate to carry the child, and IVF to make fertilization of the egg and transfer of the embryo possible. There are hormones to take, sperm to donate, tests to undergo, egg testing to be done, contracts to be signed. It can be a years-long process. Which means that if you do it, you really want it.”

But according to Gayle East, owner and director of Surrogate Solutions in Hewitt, Texas, single man surrogacy is becoming more prevalent!

The type of guy who will be willing to undertake such a life-altering move are professionals who are financially stable and ready to settle down but they haven’t found a partner yet.

“They’re single guys who’ve been working in a career, saving money and becoming more financially secure. It’s very doable for them,” says East. “In the past, there was the stereotype of moms raising a family, but they’re seeing same-sex couples with families. And now, watching other guys go through this process will probably give more single guys the courage to do this.”

Congrats to Andy and all the new dads! Blessings abound!!!

Top Entertainment Stories of 2018

It seems like 2018 was the year of big moments in entertainment.  From box office hits to celebrity engagements, this was definitely a year of highs -and some lows- for the entertainment industry.  Here are a few of the biggest headlines we saw in 2018.

The Royal Wedding

One of the biggest stories of 2018 was the royal union of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.  The British prince and the American actress tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel on May 19th, with an estimated 1.9 billion viewers tuning in around the world.  You would think with that many people watching the couple would be nervous, but Megan and Harry looked happy, poised and gracious when entering and exiting the ceremony.

The star-studded guest list was another reason so many people tuned in to watch the nuptials, with notable figures such as David and Victoria Beckham, James Corden, and even Sir Elton John turning out to the event.  A few months after the wedding came an exciting announcement- the couple is expecting their first child!

Kylie’s Surprise Baby Announcement

One of the most surprising stories in celebrity news this year was the birth of Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott’s first daughter, Stormi.  Up until Stormi’s birth on February 1st, Kyle never confirmed that she was pregnant in the first place!

The announcement came in the form of a video posted to Kylie’s social media accounts on Superbowl Sunday, effectively overshadowing the big game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots.  Upon hearing the news, fans of both the reality TV star and the rapper took to social media to congratulate the happy couple, and the rest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan expressed their joy as well.

California Wildfires

Not every piece of news this year was positive.  In late 2018, wildfires began wreaking havoc up and down the state of California.  In addition to civilians, many celebrities were affected by the devastating fires, including Miley Cyrus, Gerard Butler and Neil Young, who lost their homes in the Southern California fire.

Many celebrities came out to show their support during these hard times, and Gerard Butler hosted a star-studded fundraising event with a guest list including Sean Penn, Robin Thicke, Cindy Crawford, and many more famous faces.  Although the California wildfires devastatingly destroyed thousands of homes, many communities have already started to rebuild, thanks to generous donations from civilians and celebrities alike.

A Bachelor Engagement

If you were one of the 7.8 million people who tuned into the Bachelor season 22 finale on March 5th, you know that Bachelor Arie Luyendyk Jr. proposed to Becca K…. and then dumped her on live TV to be with Lauren B.  While the plot twist certainly made for good TV, viewers were outraged at the heartlessness of Arie’s on-screen breakup.

However, being publicly dumped ended up working in Becca’s favor, as she was announced the new Bachelorette on After the Final Rose.  Since then, Arie and Lauren have announced that they plan to get married in January 2019 and are actually expecting a baby in June! As for Becca, the Minnesota native is happily engaged to Garrett Yrigoyen, whom she met on The Bachelorette!

With how wild 2018 has been, 2019 is expected to be just as big for the entertainment industry.

New movies, music from top 40 singers, and even some pregnancy announcements are sure to take the media by storm in 2019, so be sure to look out for what’s to come!

You can find the full list of 100+ Holiday Return Policies for 2018 on the Offers.com website.

The Better Business Bureau and Investopedia offer a few tips to help make the return process easier.

  • Know the Return Deadlines: The time period allowed for returns varies by store, and even by item, with typically only a couple of weeks allowed for electronics. Some shops offer store credit, while others do exchanges or refunds. The window for a return ranges from practically forever for Lands’ End to 15 days for electronics at Walmart.
  • Get the Receipt: As a gift-giver, you should ask for a gift receipt and enclose it with the gift. There are ways to ask for a receipt – either the original or a gift receipt. Perhaps the size is off, or you already have the movie or book. Some stores may offer store credit on items brought back without a receipt, and the value given is usually the store’s most recent price.
  • Don’t Remove Tags: Opening packages or removing tags makes it more difficult, and with some sellers impossible, to return gifts, and you can be charged a restocking fee. Don’t take off tags until you’re sure you want to keep the gift.
  • Keep Electronics/DVDs in Packaging: Don’t remove electronics or similar products from their boxes before wrapping. The original packaging may be required for a return. DVDs or music CDs must remain in their sealed package.
  • Beware Sale or Clearance Items: Some stores consider the sale of these items to be final, so ask before buying. If you are the gift recipient, do not assume you have the right to return or exchange an unwanted gift.
  • Bring A Photo ID: Many stores will scan your driver’s license or other government ID to ensure that shoppers aren’t taking advantage of the system if they want to make a return without a receipt.
  • Timing is Key: Expect long return lines the day after Christmas, so head to the store when it is less likely to be crowded. Keep in mind that the customer service clerks probably have holiday fatigue, so be polite when talking to them. If you are a regular customer or have a store credit account, mention that as you discuss return options. Merchants are usually willing to accommodate loyal customers.

Good luck!
