World Health Organization Warns Pregnant Women to Avoid Brazil Olympics

brazil olympics

Yesterday, the World Health Organization issued a warning advising pregnant women to not travel to areas with Zika, and specifically, advised travelers to take precautions against the mosquitoes that spread the virus in anticipation for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

In its statement, the U.N. health agency also said that since Zika can also be spread sexually, pregnant women should abstain from sex or practice safe sex with anyone who has recently returned from areas with outbreaks.  Zika has now been proven to cause a range of  birth defects. Symptoms include babies being born with abnormally small heads.

Also, this week, a Canadian professor called for the Olympics to be postponed altogether or moved to another area of the world because of the epidemic, and claimed that the games would lead to a lot of new babies born with malformations.

Don’t You Just Love the ‘Real Moms’ of Instagram?

real moms

If you get caught up in the beautiful, well-curated, and pretty images that some mothers present on social media,  you may lose your marbles comparing your not-so-perfect life with theirs. It will never measure up of course. But that’s okay.

For this reason, we appreciate moms who keep it all the way real by posting the highs and lows, the ups and downs of life as a mom. Cheers to them.

Antonio Cromartie welcomes Twins Jynx and J’adore, His 11th and 12th Children

comartie

Congratulations to ex New Jersey Jets player Antonio Cromartie and his wife Terricka Cason Cromartie on the birth of their twins this past Sunday, May 8th, 2016.

Keeping with the theme of giving their children names that start with the letter “J”. The couple decided to name their new daughter J’adore Nayvi and son Jynx Jevell.

We suppose the name Jynx is a derivative of the common pop culture reference to say “jinx” when you and another person say (or type) the same thing at the same time. The second baby would be the jinx? shrug Who knows. The different spelling makes that name quite unique and a stand-out as well.

This is Cromartie’s 11th and 12th child. They share a son, 3-year old son Jagger and daughter, 5-year old Jurzie. And Terricka has a daughter named Jordynn (another spin on the name commonly spelled Jordan).

They announced the twin pregnancy earlier this year. It is being called a miracle pregnancy because Antonio reportedly had a vasectomy in 2011, Terricka told US Weekly they didn’t use protection because they assumed the vasectomy worked.

According to WebMD, a vasectomy is an 99.85% effective birth control method. Only one to two women out of 1,000 will have an unplanned pregnancy in the first year after their partner has had a vasectomy, the site said.

Congrats on the miracle babies and welcome Jynx and J’adore!!

You are Beautiful J’adore in every single way @jadorenayvi ?

Looking for Fun NYC Field Trip Ideas for Families and Classes? Here Ya Go!

trip

Field trips offer parents and educators one of the most popular ways to combine fun with education. Museums receive approximately 55 million students from school groups each year. Zoos, aquariums, nature centers and historic sites are other popular field trip destinations.

Few, if any, cities possess these types of attractions in more abundance than New York City. Here are a few of the top must-see attractions you and your kids should visit if you’re planning to take a field trip in the Big Apple.

The Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo is one of New York’s most popular attractions, receiving over 2 million visitors annually. The zoo houses over 600 species from around the world, including mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. Popular exhibits include the African Plains, where you can walk past lions and zebras on the savannah; the Congo Gorilla Forest, where you can meet gorillas in the rainforest; and Tiger Mountain, where you can encounter Siberian tigers in a woodland recreating the look of Russia’s Far East.

Educational offerings include classes in which kindergartners and preschoolers learn to count and say the alphabet, elementary school students learn about rainforests, middle schoolers study predators and prey, and high school students explore wildlife careers. New York City Public School students get general admission free. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more if you book two weeks in advance.

New York Aquarium

Just off Coney Island’s boardwalk, the New York Aquarium hosts over 10,000 specimens representing over 300 species. Popular exhibits include the 150,000-gallon Oceanic Tank that greets visitors as they enter; the Sea Cliffs, where you can see Pacific Coast seals and walruses as well as penguins and other creatures; Discovery Cove, where you can touch sea creatures but stay dry while standing under crashing waves; Fish That Go Zap, where you can learn about electric eels; the Aquatheater with its sea lion and dolphin shows; the Beluga Whales exhibit; and, of course, the 90,000-gallon shark tank.

Like the Bronx Zoo, the New York Aquarium offers classes for all age groups from preschool through high school. Group rates are available for groups of 10 or more.

American Museum of Natural History

New York’s American Museum of Natural History is a treasure featuring over 46 permanent exhibits. Popular on-site exhibits for groups include the Discovery Room, which is geared toward giving children 5 to 12 a hands-on look at the science behind the exhibits; the Sackler Educational Laboratory, where you can look inside the Human Brain or take a Field Trip to the Moon; and the Hayden Planetarium.

You can also explore special themes, such as dinosaurs, meteorites or Northwest Coast Indians. The museum’s website offers information on planning class field trips along with resources for students of all age groups.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Another highlight among New York’s many museums is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Met houses over 2 million works of art divided into 17 departments, representing five millennia of human creativity.

View the Met’s art treasures from ancient Egypt and Greece, observe paintings and sculptures from the great European masters, browse through American and modern art and enjoy collections from Africa, Asia and around the world.

The Met welcomes all school-age learners. Appointments are required for all visiting school groups.

Broadway

Broadway also offers opportunities to introduce kids to the performing arts. Younger children and parents can enjoy productions such as “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” and “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.”

Older children and adults will appreciate hits such as “The King and I,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables.” Have your kids read the book before or after viewing the performance to get the most out of the experience, and book your tickets early using a service like Telecharge to reserve your seats for the best prices.

These are just a few ideas for fun field trips you and your kids can take in New York. For dozens of other ideas, see Fieldtrip.com’s index of New York field trip destinations.

All Airlines’ ‘Flying While Pregnant’ Policies & Tips for Plane Travel While Pregnant

airplane

Nine months is a long time to expect someone to not travel.  It’s three quarters of a year.  Pregnant travel doesn’t have to be to far flung or exotic destinations, a simple car trip can be enough.

But pregnant women are given travel restrictions nonetheless.

These restrictions are rarely for the entire duration of the pregnancy, unless you are extremely high risk or have complicating medical conditions that need to be monitored.  When the restriction kicks in depends upon two things, your doctor and how your pregnancy is progressing.

Usually these restrictions are placed somewhere between the beginning of the third trimester and the beginning of the final month – so 28 to 36 weeks.

When considering that once baby arrives it will be harder to get away, many couples find themselves planning romantic trips as one last hurrah, or trying to work out visits with family members in other parts of the country.  Some have long-standing annual family vacations that they want to make, and some women might have careers that require time away from home.

Regardless of your reason for traveling these tips, annotated from an old post from my ex Washington Times Communities colleague Brigid Moret , may help make your journey as comfortable as possible and also check out CheapAir’s airline pregnancy guide below.

Check With Your Doctor Discuss any complications you might be having, where you are going and your mode of transportation.  Air travel may not be advised, and certain parts of the world carry increased risk for pregnant women and are discouraged.  Also, if you get motion sick and tend to take medication for the condition while traveling, verify that the prescription is safe for your developing baby.

Evaluate When You’ll Be Traveling –  The second trimester is often the most comfortable time for most women and usually beats the earliest of travel restrictions doctors place on mothers-to-be.  As a result, weeks 15-28 tend to be the best for travel.  You’ve gotten your energy back, the morning sickness is gone, and you’re not feeling like a beached whale yet.  For vacation purposes, this may be the best time since you’re most likely able to enjoy yourself during this period.

Another consideration is the time of year you will be traveling.  While pregnant your blood volume increases as do your maternal fat stores.  Both of these contribute to overheating.  You can go from a summer loving sun-goddess to an air-condition clinging woman quite easily.  Similarly, if you’re planning on a winter trip, learning how to ski while your center of balance is thrown off might not be the wisest of activities.

Take Frequent Breaks Okay, if you’re on a 10 hour flight you can’t ask the pilot to land when you want a break, but you can get up and stretch your legs.  Sitting for too long can be uncomfortable for anyone, but it is more so for a pregnant woman.  Staying in one position too long can lead to back pain and restrict circulation in your legs.  If you’re in your third trimester, it can also cause discomfort in your swollen belly. Changing position usually helps with all of these discomforts.  So try to get up and move every one to two hours.

Also, ignoring your bladder for as long as possible because you don’t want to use a grimy gas station bathroom or trying to maneuver in the tiny stall on a plane is a bad idea.  Resisting the urge to go to the bathroom can lead to urinary tract infections, which can cause complications in your pregnancy.

Watch Your Diet It can be hard while traveling to maintain the healthy diet you have been keeping to at home.  Whether it’s a dearth of healthy options at the roadside café or that your family wants to eat out every night, there are definitely more obstacles in your way.

To help minimize the number of candy bars you’re grabbing to stave off the munchies, plan ahead.  If you’re traveling by car, pack a bag or a small cooler full of healthy snacks, such as fruit, granola, and nuts.  If you’re traveling by another means, throw a handful of healthy snacks from home in your purse. A handful of nuts mixed with dried cranberries is a great alternative to trail mix with M&Ms, and the individually wrapped fiber bars are a great way to make you feel more full to get you through the trip.

Once you are at your destination, be menu savvy.  Look for things that are low on fat and add vegetables whenever possible – even if it’s insisting that you add green peppers, olives and mushrooms to a pizza.  Ask waiters if they make substitutions for their sides.  Apple sauce instead of french fries may not be as good as steamed veggies, but it’s less grease and fat.

Stay Hydrated Dehydration is a leading cause of pre-term labor, so drink, drink, drink.  If you’re traveling by car, throw plenty of bottled water in the cooler with your healthy snacks.  If you’re flying, drink plenty before you board, then when the flight attendant brings the beverage cart around, ask for a bottle of water.  If you ask for the entire bottle they will give it to you, otherwise you will receive the tiny plastic cup which will not be enough.  Also, don’t be afraid to flag down a flight attendant at any point during the flight and ask for more to drink.

Include hydration alertness for all your activities on your trip, especially if you are out and about a lot or spending lots of time in the sun.  Remember, everything you sweat out needs to be replaced, and being pregnant you’re probably sweating more than you are used to.

airport

Stay away from caffeinated beverages while you travel.  Not only do the standard warnings about caffeine intake during pregnancy apply, but caffeine is also a diuretic.  As a result, all those fluids that you’ve been drinking to stay hydrated will try to find their way through you faster.  The result?  More trips to the bathroom.

Above all, the most important parts of traveling while pregnant is to make sure you are safe.  Following the tips above will help you be more comfortable and help protect you and your baby.  Just remember, this may be the last trip you make without an extra companion for years to come, so make as enjoyable as you can.

VIRAL: Husband/Wife Bloggers’ ‘Infertility Announcements’ are Conversation Starters

whitney 5

Husband and wife bloggers Spencer and Whitney Blake are getting a lot of attention lately over a series of spoofs of typical pregnancy announcements they’ve published on their blog, On an Adventure.

The couple were diagnosed with “unexplained fertility” in 2011 and their posts feature an infertile versions of the common pregnancy announcements.

Spencer said they got a lot of positive feedback from their first photo: a take on the “bun in the oven” announcement.

“Someone on Facebook messaged me and said, ‘Thank you so much for letting me know I’m not alone,’ ” Spencer told PEOPLE. “And that’s why we decided to do this in the first place.”

Indeed, infertility is often not spoken about in “polite company” and people generally shy away from discussing it, even after they discover a family member or friend is dealing with it. After their infertility diagnosis, the Blakes adopted a son in 2012 and another in 2014.

“In a way, we have a great appreciation for infertility,”Whitney added. “We’ll never love infertility, obviously, but we are grateful for the way it shaped our family story. If it weren’t for infertility, we wouldn’t have found our boys. We love them so dearly and our family turned out the way it was supposed to.”

They are hoping the viral popularity of the photos will spark more dialogue and lead to more openness about infertility.

“If someone opens up to you about their infertility issues, be there for them!” Spencer said. “Acknowledgement is key, when someone shows they care, it really means the world.”
