Parent Shaming Study: 1 in 5 Toddlers Have Never Tried A Vegetable

New research has found that almost one in five two-year-olds have never even tried any kind of vegetable. Research shows the importance of parents to persist even though kids do not like certain foods.

A new survey found that parents have been so tired of the daily eating battle that they have stopped trying altogether. As a result, more than 30,000 toddlers based in the UK are not getting their 5-a-day, which is the consumption of at least five portions of fruits and vegetables daily.

Many parents have admitted to using a variety of tactics to convince young kids to eat healthy food. One in three used the television as a distraction while more than half of the respondents from the survey have tried making food more appealing. The same study has shown that one in three parents often feel nervous and confused during the eating process.

Research has shown that when a child’s eating problem is short-term, the lack of nutrients is unlikely to do any harm. However, long-term refusal of fruits and vegetables that contain protein, calcium, fiber, vitamins and minerals can stunt development.

Janet Jackson’s ex-spouse James DeBarge says They Had a Secret Daughter

Now that Janet Jackson has announced her pregnancy with her husband, billionaire business man Wissam al Mana, her ex husband from decades ago, James DeBarge has come forward to allege they may have had a secret daughter together.

The singer, who was part of the popular 80s family singing group DeBarge, told Radar Online that a young woman contacted him to tell him she is Janet Jackson’s adoptive daughter.

Jacksok and DeBarge had their marriage annulled after a few short months I. 1984 when Janet was just 19-years old.

 Debarge told the site:

“Someone had contacted me. She spoke to me by email,” he said. “The first time was two years ago. I have not been able to directly see her face-to-face.”

He added that the young woman suggested that they take a paternity test. No test has been taken yet, however.

“She suggested it,” DeBarge said, adding that he has yet to meet the woman because he’s afraid.

DeBarge also confirms that when the woman contacted him, she said one of  adoptive parents died but he decided to tell because another girl had claimed to be their love child.

“She described as much as she could tell me because she was very fearful at the time,” he continued. “She was very angry about people running with this story about this [other child] being my baby. She got very angry. She’s like, ‘Papa I want to help you out.’ She had so much of personality and she was so accurate with everything she was saying, it was only things that I and Janet know. No one else but god, me and Janet.”

Debarge’s mom claimed in a Star magazine tabloid story in 1994 that Janet went away for a long time and then asked for an annulment when she returned.

Rumors have existed for decades suggesting Janet may have had a child with James. Some have suggested that her brother Jackie Jackson’s daughter Brandi with Jackie’s now deceased wife Enid was Janet’s secret child but the numbers don’t add up.

Enid was born in 1982 when Janet was 16 and hadn’t started dating James yet.

I don’t but none of this secret child story. Looks like someone was setting herself to get in with a wealthy family. Who knows. Do you?

These are 10 ways to Sneak More Fruits & Veggies in your family’s diet

10 Ways to Get Whole Foods

I struggle everyday to get my three kids to eat better and healthier whole non-processed foods.  It’s not only important for their nutrient needs but also key for they maintaining a healthy weight. I’m re-visiting this past post on ways to  incorporate more whole foods into your family’s diet and get on the path to healthier living.

Here are 10 ways to get your family to eat more whole foods:

veggies

Portion out fruits and veggies and keep them in the fridge for snacking. Kids and adults alike will readily grab a snack from the fridge if it’s convenient. The problem is that most of the time the most convenient options are chips and other unhealthy snack foods that come pre-portioned. Keeping pre-portioned baby carrots, apple slices, and other whole foods in individual containers in the fridge make them easier to grab, which makes them much more likely to be eaten. Eliminate the bad snack choices and offer only the healthy choices instead.

fruit

Add fruit to every meal. Most people like fruit because it’s a sweet snack option, but in a natural and healthy way.  The FDA recommends that half your plate be filled with fruits and veggies.  Fruit can also be mixed into a smoothie or consumed as a 100% juice.  However when you can, choose whole fruits, because the fiber content of whole fruits is very important to a healthy diet according to the American Dietetic Association.

salad

Make a salad for lunch. Instead of filling the kids up with white bread sandwiches for lunch try fixing them a salad.  By adding things like dried and fresh fruit, nuts, hard-boiled eggs, and lots of different veggies to the lettuce base it becomes a tasty meal.  By incorporating some of the kids’ favorites they will be more likely to eat the salad.  If you are worried about protein feel free to add in some beans or lean meat.

meatless monday

Set aside one night a week to eat vegetarian. Call it Meatless Monday or Tofu Tuesday and make it a fun experience for your family.  Make vegetarian lasagna using thinly sliced eggplant instead of pasta, and top it with plenty of low-fat cheese. Your family will be pleasantly surprised at how much it tastes like their old favorite.  Soups are another easy way to go meatless, as are other pasta or casserole options.

veggies

Instead of a starch serve two vegetables. An easy way to get more vegetables into your family’s diet is by making two veggies with dinner.  Leave out the pasta or potato that you might normally fix and serve a green salad and asparagus with a proper portion of meat instead.

puree

Sweeten food with pureed fruit instead of sugar or syrup. If the kids normally enjoy waffles with syrup for breakfast, change it up so that they are eating whole grain waffles and some pureed strawberries or blueberries in place of the syrup. The natural sweetness from the fruit will make a nice alternative to the regular syrup topping. Sliced fresh fruit in a bowl with a little honey drizzled over it will make a light and refreshing end to any meal.  To save money, try to look for fruits that are in season, or choose a good quality frozen fruit or fruit canned in its own juice.  During the summer try grilled fruit for dessert.

smoothie

Serve smoothies to your family for an on-the-go breakfast choice. Start with frozen fruit and you won’t need to add ice to the blender.  If your kids don’t like veggies, you can easily hide them in a smoothie and they will never know, and for some extra protein blend in some Greek yogurt.  These sweet concoctions can be made for four people just as easily as they can be for one, and offer a healthy option that’s perfect for the most important meal of the day.

salmon-932915_960_720

Whole foods aren’t limited to just fruits and veggies. Anything that is consumed as close to how it appears in nature is considered to be a whole food.  For instance, a baked or grilled chicken breast is unprocessed and unrefined, so it is a whole food and a very healthy protein choice, as are eggs and fish.

beans-1268099_960_720

Add beans to everything. Okay, maybe not everything, but kidney beans can be added to sautéed ground turkey to make chili, and black beans can be added to some lettuce with some whole kernel corn, and fresh tomato salsa for a southwest salad. Beans are an easy, healthy way to bulk up nearly any savory meal.

Look at Lily Aldridge Rocking the Ultimate Blogger’s Weekend Gear

weekend gear

Full time bloggers get no weekends or vacations off. We work 365 days of the year and around the clock. We have to be comfortable but, if we can, try to stay fashionable and current when out and about, attending events, or just chilling at a cafe behind a laptop cranking out our next post.

I spotted a Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum model Lily Aldridge in an outfit that captured the perfect weekend wear for a blogger around this time of the year. A comfy and seasonal top in a bright or neutral color, a pair of jeans, ballet blats, shades with a nice spacious bag. Hair in a bun and away from the face, not too fussy.  It was fab and functional.

Here is Why You Shouldn’t Stop Taking Folic Acid After the Recent Autism-Link Report

folic acid

A new research study links folic acid and B12 consumption with autism, but women are often told to take folic acid when they are thinking of becoming pregnant and daily while pregnant. What’s up with the conflicting news? The researchers warned that the study should not discourage women from taking the nutrient.

Several news outlets are releasing responses to that report. Here is a recent LA Times piece debunking some of the findings and shared reasons why to not take it to heart.

The research was conducted by a team from Johns Hopkins University. They analyzed data from 1,391 mothers and their children who participated in theBoston Birth Cohort, a project aimed at understanding the roots of developmental diseases. Volunteer pairs were recruited when the children were born and then tracked for up to 15 years.

All of the mothers took surveys about their use of prenatal vitamins and other supplements throughout their pregnancies. The women also gave blood samples within three days of giving birth, allowing researchers to measure levels of prenatal vitamins in their systems at the end of their pregnancies.

Medical records showed that 107 of the 1,391 children were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. But the risk of a diagnosis was not spread evenly among all mother-child pairs.

For instance, mothers who said they took prenatal multivitamins three to five times per week were much less likely to be told that their child was on the autism spectrum compared with mothers who didn’t take the vitamins. Those who used them in the first trimester were 67% less likely to have a child with autism; those who used in them in the second trimester were 62% less likely to get that diagnosis; and those who used them in the third trimester were 57% less likely to wind up with an affected child, the researchers reported.

Writer Gives Props to Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling for Shunning the ‘Bumpwatch’ Craze

eva-mendes-and-ryan-gosling

Salon writer Nico Lang gives praise to Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling for being super private about their spawning offsprings. He also gives a pretty good run down on the “bumpwatch” and celebrity baby industry which is a multi-million dollar industry. It is not all damning, here is an excerpt:

Call it a win for privacy in the digital age, but even more than that, it’s heartening to see parents opt out of the toxic culture of celebrity baby worship that demands constant updates about famous offspring. Every single one of us should follow their lead.

This is an industry that treats children like corporate mergers, fashion icons, and objects of an almost religious devotion before they can even walk or talk, let alone sign an endorsement deal. When Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony gave birth to twins in 2008, they pulled in what was then a record sum for the first photos of a celebrity couple’s children: $6 million. That total would be eclipsed within months. Knox and Vivienne, the fraternal twins of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, would quickly become household names from the moment they were born. Their debut into the limelight—courtesy of People magazine—netted $15 million. That’s more than most movies make in their opening weekend.

But no financial impact was more massive than the Royal Baby, an infant whose coming was such a media sensation that Prince George’s July 2013 birth was estimated to generate $400 million in revenue for the U.K. economy. For celebrity news websites, the young royal’s birth signaled a boom time after a long drought:According to the New York Times, US Weekly had the biggest traffic day in its website’s history on July 23, the day that new mother Kate Middleton finally vacated the hospital with her “bundle of baby joy.” The same was true for People’s site, which reported a nearly 50 percent boost in traffic on the very same day. The magazine’s print publication on the royal birth was its biggest-selling of the year.

At the time, the editor of the gossip website Hollywood Life, Bonnie Fuller, predicted that Prince George would remain a cash cow for tabloid publishers. “The royal baby will become a regular beat, just like Shiloh and Suri were the babies of six years ago,” Fuller told the New York Times, also referring to Suri Holmes-Cruise, the now 10-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. “The two babies that Hollywood Life audiences are going to be obsessed with are going to be Prince George and Kim Kardashian’s baby, North West.” US Weekly editor Mike Steele called it the “royal baby boom.”

Stirrup Stories: My Evening with Cervical Cancer ‘Cervivors’ (VIDEO)

JJ Ghatt jjghatt • Instagram photos and videos

Last night, I attended an event in Washington, DC put on by Cervivor, a cervical cancer awareness, support and fundraising organization that a friend, a cervical cancer survivor, founded over a decade ago. I was one of the original founding Board members of the organization’s predecessor Tamika and Friends and she gave me an award for getting the 501c3 federal tax-exempt status for the organization.

But to me, that was a minor role given what Tamika has built, a nurturing and supportive organization that has actually saved lives. We heard the stories from “cervivors”, doctors,  a current cervical cancer patient and the mother of a young woman who succumbed to the disease at age 22. I literally cried through the “Stirrup Stories” about this not-often-talked about form of cancer, which has a lot of stigma and shame associated with it.

The young woman I sat next to literally broke down into tears because she said that each element of those women’s stories were relateable to her and she thought that she was the only one dealing with those things and it was reaffirming to hear, finally, that she was not alone. She has Stage 3 Cervical Cancer.

cervivor

I promise to do more to raise awareness, starting with this video message to my readers and Bellyitch Blog followers. Some of the victims and survivors are moms. Many of the women we heard about last night lost their fertility after their diagnosis, and the founder herself was upset for a while after learning at age 25 that she would never ever be able to give birth to her own child. Now she is happily married with a stepdaughter.

Here is my summation of last night’s events and plea to readers and parents of kids who will need to be vaccinated between the ages of 11 to 13 to prevent more women from dying from this very preventable form of cancer.
