Dads: Your Kids Will Appreciate you in 20 years if you Do These 6 Things

Bellyitch rewind

by Leon Scott Baxter

When I was growing up, I thought my dad was a freak.

He wore strange clothes, said weird things, and listened to horrible music. In fact, he used to sit on the living room floor wearing giant headphones listening to his vinyls.

Every now and then he’d unplug the headphones and let his music fill the house (I didn’t like these moments): Elton John, Simon & Garfunkle, and Cat Stevens.

I couldn’t stand this music…because it was his music. I boycotted any songs, all artists that my father enjoyed, because I wanted to disassociate myself with his out-of-date, old hat, lyricists.

Twenty years later, when I was all about getting those eleven CDs for a penny (remember those promos?), I’d choose my Sugar Ray and Lenny Kravitz, but I’d find myself always throwing in some kind of out-of-date, old hat Elton John or Cat Stevens-like artists. Why? Because although my dad really was a freak, he did have good taste in music.

Sometimes it takes time for kids to appreciate their fathers and what they do. I guess it’s a form of delayed gratification.

If you want to be the dad that your adult children will appreciate, here are six easy ways to get ‘er done.

  1. Avoid Courtesy Smiles

If your kid just ain’t cutting it, don’t pretend he is. My daughter loves basketball, but she’s not great yet (saying she’s good might even be a stretch, but I love the girl). One day she asked, “Papa, do you think I’ll ever play in the WNBA?”

Sure, I could have smiled and fibbed, “Of course, you’ll definitely play pro basketball,” but it’s crucial we keep our children grounded…without breaking their hearts. So, I replied, “If you want to be in the WNBA, you’ll have to practice a lot more.”

Keeping it real, while offering a way to keep the door open to their dream is ideal. And, kids know when we’re buttering them up, anyway. Young people perform better when adults express sincere expectations for them.

  1. Beat ‘Em At Checkers

Too many dads let their kids beat them at checkers, Chutes and Ladders or tennis. They feel it would break their little one’s heart if she lost to Dear Old Dad. Wrong! She will be so thankful one day that you didn’t.

Because I was a fast runner in school, I would challenge my mom to races, and she never let me win. She’d always beat me by a stride or two. It didn’t damage my psyche. On the contrary, it gave me something to shoot for. As I got swifter, Mom would run faster, still barely beating me.

I still remember the day. I was twelve-years old, and I beat my mom in a foot race. Ecstatic, I asked her, “Did you let me win?”

“No, you won fair and square.” That triumph meant something to me. By my mom not letting me win, I learned resilience. I learned how to lose, and I learned to appreciate a true victory.

STUDY: Wife Ability To Calm Down During Fights affects Marriage Longevity

Marriage can be a battlefield. But a new study conducted at UC Berkeley has found that, when it comes to keeping the peace, it’s more important for wives than for husbands to calm down after a heated argument.

While both spouses were equally able to cool down during conflicts, the husbands’ emotional regulation had little or no bearing on long-term marital satisfaction, according to the study’s findings published online Nov. 4 in the journal Emotion.

“When it comes to managing negative emotion during conflict, wives really matter,” said psychologist Lian Bloch, lead author of the study, which she conducted during doctoral and postdoctoral studies at Berkeley and Stanford. She is currently an assistant professor at the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in a joint doctoral program taught by faculty at Stanford University and Palo Alto University.

Coco Austin Barely Looks 7 Months Pregnant in This Photo

coco austin pregnant

Coco Austin has got to be the smallest 7 month pregnant celebrity around. The reality TV star, and host of her talk show with her husband Ice T, showed off her outfit of the day on her Instagram page.

“Chilling baby..I’m just chillin…Backstage at BC concert supporting my man..Thats how I roll…..#28weeks #louboutin shoes #Guess Blouse.”

You could barely tell she is pregnant and certainly not 28 weeks along.

And whoa baby, are those stiletto heels. She’s bucking all the advice about avoiding heels because unlike before pregnancy, a fall could injure yourself and your baby.

You can catch Coco daily on the Ice and Coco on FOX.

Also, she gave us a tease of her cover photo shoot with Vintage NY Magazine. She looked fabulous and like another person altogether wish the cat eye make up and orange lips, with her hair toned down to resemble vintage Hollywood glam. You could see a bit of a bump in the photo. It looked like a boudoir shoot.

“Ready for a tease, Vintage readers? Here is a behind the scenes pic for this winters issue….,” Austin captioned the Instagram photo “Welcoming baby Chanel (before she’s born) I can’t wait for @vintagenycmag to come out so u can see the fabulousness we shot!”

Hurricane Preparedness: 3 Things you Must Do to Secure Your Family Pet

disaster preparedness for animals

Hurricane Joaquin is currently threatening East Coast residents with heavy rains and dangerous flooding. In the rush to get ready for the heavy storm the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) wants pet owners to remember to include the family pet in their disaster preparedness and evacuation plans.

We’re in the middle of updating our disaster plan and running family drills and we now have pets but I did forget about our two guinea pigs but they need to be in the plan too.  We’re grateful to be able to share the following three things the AVMA recommends we do:

1.Have a pet carrier for transportation and temporary housing. Be sure your pet’s carrier is large enough for your dog or cat to stay in comfortably for a few days. If you evacuate to a shelter, your pets will have to spend most of their time in their crates. Cat owners should also plan on creating temporary litter boxes. These can be simply put together with a small cardboard box, plastic bags for liners, and litter.

2. Have a disaster preparedness kit. Include at least a week’s worth of food and fresh water, any medications your pet is on and a current prescription, as well as any health and medical records. The kit should also include a photo of you and your pets for identification purposes; a list of local pet friendly hotels, friends and relatives that can house you, and a local veterinarian; and first aid supplies.

3. Have proper identification for your pets. During a disaster or evacuation, the likelihood of being separated from your pets is much higher, and proper identification is the only way to ensure you’ll be reunited. Identification tags should have your name and cellphone number as well as the name of friends or relatives who lives outside of your area. Luggage identification tags make good temporary tags for your pet during a disaster. Your pet should also have a microchip with updated contact information.

Have a plan. In the event of an evacuation, know where you’re going and how you’ll get there with your pets.

The AVMA has a number of additional resources on hurricane preparedness and response. You can view these resources on the AVMA website at HERE!

‘Nashville’s Hayden Panettiere Opens up About Her PostPartum Depression

hayden anetierre Wladimir Klitschko

Nashville star Hayden Panetierre accepted the “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” challenge and revealed a lot about her pregnancy and the fact she suffered from postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in December 2014.

From the list she posted inside an US Weekly piece, we now know:

She and her best friend had their babies 6 months apart, she gained 43 pounds during pregnancy, she delivered her daughter in Hawaii, and said daughter is in the 88 % for height already, probably because her dad world fighter champion Wladimir Klitschko  is super tall.

The last item on her list of the 25 items: “I suffered a bit of postpartum depression. You’re not alone or crazy, ladies!”

The original Heroes alum opened up some more this week during a visit to Live with Kelly and Michael morning show. She revealed that she too had previous misconception about the condition:

“I can very much relate. It’s something a lot of women experience. When [you’re told] about postpartum depression you think it’s ‘I feel negative feelings towards my child, I want to injure or hurt my child’ — I’ve never, ever had those feelings. Some women do. But you don’t realize how broad of a spectrum you can really experience that on. It’s something that needs to be talked about. Women need to know that they’re not alone, and that it does heal.”

Postpartum depression is a condition that affects up to 80 percent of mothers in the US.

This ailment, sometimes called the “baby blues”, can vary from mild to severe depression and can last from weeks to months. Before you give birth, it is important to understand the warning signs of postpartum depression and know where to seek help if you suspect you have this condition. For most women, postpartum depression strikes within the first weeks after their baby is born.

The common symptoms are crying, mood swings, and a feeling of sadness. Some women experience decreased energy, a loss of interest in things they previously enjoyed, and sometimes trouble bonding with their new baby.

Postpartum depression usually fades away within weeks after the baby is born, but for some women it can last longer and be more severe than the simple “blues”. Women experiencing severe postpartum depression may feel irritable and irrational.

Some with extreme cases may even have thoughts and feelings of hurting themselves or their babies.

These are serious signs that need to be treated right away. If you suspect that you are suffering from postpartum depression the best thing you can do is seek your doctor immediately. She will have some suggestions for how to help cope with these feelings in the following weeks. Women suffering from severe depression may be given a prescription for an antidepressant medication that will help ease the symptoms.

If you are suffering from postpartum depression, remember that you are not alone. This common condition happens to most mothers shortly after birth. It is treatable and for most women it goes away easily within a few weeks. There is no reason to suffer in silence with this kind of depression. Talk to your doctor, seek help, and know that you are facing what millions of other mothers have also faced.

Fall Fashion: 25 Ways to Tie a Scarf (VIDEO)

The temperature is dropping in many parts of the US which means it’s scarf season again!  I had on two this morning as I headed out to a dentist appointment. Brrrr!
Scarves are the perfect functional piece of your wardrobe because they  keep you warm and they can add a pop of color if you are doing the monochromatic black look to mimic a slimming effect if you are preggers and your hips are spreading faster than your nose. ha!
I also love scarves because you can always get one in a trending color, material or fabric and use them to stay current and in style, if you’re into being hipwhileknocked up. (smile)

So once again, if you haven’t already seen fashion blogger Wendy from Wendy’s Lookboook’s super viral video, “25 Ways to Tie a scarf” that has gotten 25 million views and counting, here it is:

There is No Such Thing As ‘Having it All’ So Quit Asking Women About It

fashion-woman-cute-airport-large

Salon writer Mary Elizabeth Williams wants people to stop asking working moms about “having it all” — and  she wants women to stop answering

Let’s rewind a bit.

It all started with Facebook executive Margaret Gould Stewart‘s opinion piece in USA Today last Friday. In it, Stewart bemoans the obsession with the fertility of female executive, corporate figures and general managers in the workplace.

“When the venue is a tech conference, let’s talk about tech, for goodness sake. Making motherhood a required topic for women leaders minimizes their contributions to the industry…. It minimizes my expertise and accomplishments and those of my fellow women tech leaders.” she  writes in the piece, suggesting one option for conference moderators.  “As I see it, you have two choices: you can either ask everyone these questions about their private lives and their role as a parent, or you should ask no one.”

And the impetus for her column was witnessing a session at the Fortune Brainstorm conference when the interviewer on stage mentioned that the CEO of YouTube Susan Wojcicki, who was being interviewed, just had her fifth child.  He then tells the audience to give her applause for that but didn’t ask them to give praise for her series of accomplishments he rattled off before talking about her children.

“The first four minutes of a 21-minute interview with the person some call the most influential woman in the industry was focused on parenting and pregnancy,” Stewart recalls.

She ends it with a series of pleas to PR people, Conference organizers and moderators to stick to the script, essentially, and not focus on the “work/life balance” so much for female execs in high ranking positions.

TV Producer and creator of wildly popular shows like Scandal  Shonda Rhimes co-signed on Stewart’s article by retweeting it with the comment, “THIS!”

And seeing that, Williams was inspired to write her piece which says that there is no such a thing as having it all.  In fact, that’s what she called it, “Stop asking working moms about “having it all” — and women, stop answering.”

She suggest that the question is really just a means of telling women that they shouldn’t strive for the pinnacles of success in the workplace.

“They’re supposed to come up short and serve as cautionary tales of what happens when women want things, especially things in addition to babies…” Williams wraps up the post.

Love it and couldn’t agree more. Check out her entire column Here!

I’m not in the corporate world, but I am an entrepreneur and run my own business and people ask me all the time “how do I do it.” And the answer always is because I love what I do, but as to having it all- Negative.

When you pour your all into your children, you cannot focus on your relationship with your spouse as much. When you are spending late nights at work or on travel constantly, then you miss important moments in your kid’s life.

I am a mess and as much as I give advice on how to keep it together, I am a far way from having all my ish together my darn self.

Scurrying out the house and in between meets and practices and games and school events and managing my media company and blogging and attending  networking functions and events I cover when I’m freelancing and working on a few clients work, I find I’ve lost myself and don’t have time to enjoy each moment.

I show up late often and get overwhelmed with all the due dates and everything coming at me at once.

Thus, it is true that there is no such a thing as “having it all” but that shouldn’t stop women from doing what they want, striving to the highest achievement or taking a path less traveled…with or without kids.
