5 signs your kid may need eyeglasses

Over 10 million kids in the US have undetected vision problems which interfere with their learning and everyday activities. Considering the fact that close to 80% of what a child learns is received visually, it’s really important that parents catch early signs of vision problems.
To help determine whether it’s time to take your child for their first eye exam, and potentially first pair of eyeglasses, Marc Weinstein, leading optometrist and co-founder of 39DollarGlasses.com put together some of the most important tell tale signs and symptoms of when your child might need to be tested for glasses.
1. Squinting
This can prove that your child may be nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism
2. Constantly Rubbing Eyes
If a child is excessively rubbing his/her eyes it could be a result of eyestrain

3. Closing or Covering One Eye While Reading or Watching Television
If a child has trouble seeing they may cover or close their eye to help adjust their vision
4. Losing Place While Reading (Or Disliking Reading/Having a Lower Attention Span)
Skipping lines or losing place could indicate vision problems
5. Sitting Closely To The Television
Typically this is a sign of nearsightedness. Nearsightedness (Myopia), as it is medically termed, is a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred.
Hope this helps, parents! Good luck!

Lorenzo Lamas’ wife is pregnant with his grandchild

See when your family dynamics is set up so that you and your stepmom and your pops can hang socially, when you encounter struggles carrying your second child, you maybe can ask your dad’s young 5th wife to carry your baby.
And that is precisely what happened in Lorenzo Lamas’ celebrity family recently.

Shayna Lamas, who won the 12th season of The Bachelor and was briefly engaged to Brit Bachelor Matt Grant in 2008 before a split, is expecting her second child.
She and husband Nick Richie suffered a devastating late term loss last February 2014 due to a uterine rupture when Shayna was 20 weeks along. The trauma left the Leave it to Lamas and General Hospital alum unable to carry any more children physically. That is when she asked and her step mom Shawna Craig agreed to carry the baby, a boy, for her.

“It is weird. Somebody else carrying your baby is weird,” Shayne told CLOSER . “But I lost my son, and now Shawna is carrying my son. I have just been given the biggest blessing in the whole world and I will always be grateful.”
It’s also unique because Lamas’ wife is carrying his grandchild. Wonderful that the family could grown in this way. Very special indeed.
Shayna and Richie currently have a 3-year old  daughter, Press Dahl. Read more in Closer which has hit the news stands.

One mom’s pregnant ‘Thriller’ goes viral (VIDEO)

At 40 weeks pregnant, Bonnie Northsea got news her husband had testicular cancer but as she processed that sad development, she had to also get the baby she was baking out into the real world.

With her 3-year old son nearby, Northsea recorded her moves and shared it on her Facebook page. After receiving 55,000 shares on that, she moved it up to her YouTube page and 1 Million views and a few features on MTV, PEOPLE magazine and ABC news later, she’s a viral hit!
“This viral video has really helped by adding laughter to our family and bringing us closer together through these very difficult times,” she told PEOPLE.
She is a great dancer! I hope baby makes an appearance soon and her husband beats the cancer.

Reese Witherspoon Lessons: How to care for your expensive handbag

This weekend, much ado was made in gossip blogs over a paparazzi image of actress Reese Witherspoon dumping out water that had spilled in her sunny yellow $4,000 custom Reed Krakoff bag.

Witherspoon, a frequent featured mom in Bellyitch, had just come from the gym with her 10-year old son Deacon.
GET A SIMILAR BAG UNDER $100
!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

I know it sounds petty but keeping your super expensive handbag in tip top shape is serious business. This water in the bag thing is downright sacrilegious in some circles.  So for the uninitiated, here are some rules of caring for your purse that cost over $1,000.
1. Keep it in the dustbag that it comes with.
2. Stuff it with acid free tissue or airbags to help maintain its shape.
3. Store the bag in the box and placed on a high shelf in your closet or bag shelf.
4. Make sure the space it is kept in has a moisture level of 50% because anything above 70% will cause molding and rotting.
5. Use moisturizer occasionally. Meltonian shoe cream is the best./

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);
6. If you live in a humid environment, store your bag in an air conditioned place.
7. Keep all make up in makeup bags before putting them in the bag.
8. Avoid storing pens, markers & pencils in the bag and/or limit to one pen with a secure cap.
9. To avoid theft, avoid leaving the bag in storage racks, coat check ins, cubby holes etc. Best not take your bag where you need to leave it in someone else’s care.
10. Buy renter’s or home owner’s insurance and make sure your bag is listed as an insured item.
The end. Be a responsible hawt bag owner. ha!

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e     = doc.createElement(s); e.id  = id; p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js’; var cb = new Date().getTime(); p += ‘?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Lent: 20 Things even non-Catholics can give up

Today is Ash Wednesday  and whether you are Catholic, Christian, of another religion or agnostic, I invite you to take the next 40 days to reset your life and priorities.
While searching online for some tools to help me on my renewal journey for Lent, I  stumbled upong a Lutheran pastor’s blog post with suggestion of 20 habits, vices and character traits to consider giving up.
For wider appeal and to reach more audiences, I have appended it to make it secular and invite all of my readers to check these out and consider using this season to reset their priorities, goals and work on becoming a better person.
    1. Guilt – Today is a new day and the past is behind.
    2. The need to please everyone – You cannot satisfy all those wanting your time, talents, energy and resources, so stop trying. Do your best and leave time for yourself and sanity.
    3. Envy – Think: “I am fortunate with what I have. My value is not found in my possessions.”
    4. Impatience – Good things will come in time if you are steady in your journey.
    5. Sense of entitlement – Remember this of yourself: “The world does not owe me anything. I live in humility and grace.”
    6. Bitterness and Resentment – Meditate on this mantra: “The only person I am hurting by holding on to these is myself.”
    7. Blame – Recite this: “I am not going to pass the buck. I will take responsibility for my actions.”
    8. Gossip and Negativity –  Practice this sentiment: “I will put the best construction on everything when it comes to other people. I will also minimize my contact with people who are negative and toxic bringing other people down.”
    9. Comparison – Remember this of yourself: “I have my own unique contribution to make and there is no one else like me.”
    10. Fear of failure – You don’t succeed without experiencing failure. Just make sure you fail forward.
    11. Feelings of unworthiness – You are fearfully and wonderfully made. It’s easy in this world of comparing ourselves to others that we so quickly forget we have our own talents and are equally worthy of living life.
    12. Doubt – Believe there is a plan for you that is beyond anything you could imagine. The future is brighter than you could ever realize.
    13. Arrogance– You’re not better than anyone & acting like it only reflects on you.
    14. Self-pity – We will be comforted in our sorrow. It’s never that bad and remember someone somewhere wants your problems in exchange for theirs.
    15. Retirement – As long as you are still breathing, you are here for a reason. You have a purpose to influence others.
    16. Excuses – A wise man once said, if you need an excuse, any excuse will do.
    17. Shame– Don’t dwell on your past & decisions. Live with them & learn from them. You are a much wider person today. Own your baggage.
    18. Lack of counsel – Wise decisions are rarely made in a vacuum.
    19. Pride – Blessed are the humble. Let others trumpet your triumphs for a change.
    20.  Worry – There is no value in it. You cannot control everything and worrying will not help.
Godspeed, everyone. I hope we all come out refreshed and renewed in 40 days.

What to do with an underachieving child

Getting a child to live up to his or her full potential is one of the most challenging things about being a parent. On one hand, we do not want our children to feel that we are putting undue pressure on them to do things they may not necessarily want to do. On the other, practically every child needs at least a parental nudge every now and then, and this often means being the bad guy in your child’s eyes. It is yet another area of parenting where the parents really do know what is best and should use their authority to bring about positive growth for the child.
If you have a child who seems to be a chronic underachiever, you do not have to accept the status quo. All children can be taught to try harder and reach their full potential. If you are stumped as to what to do, here are some tips.
    1. Shared choices: One of the major trends in modern parenting is the tendency to give kids unprecedented control over the activities and interests they pursue. Where once parents tended to impose things on their children, we now let our kids decide what they want to do and give them our blessing. There are great things about this approach—it gives kids a sense of self-empowerment, for one—but it also leaves too much wiggle room for laziness and lack of persistence. You cannot force your kids to love activities they are just not into, but you can at least make them try.
    2. Emphasize effort: Another mistake modern parents often make is allowing their children to give up on new things before they have a chance to find out if they like it or have a talent for it. Your child might have the potential to be a world-class pianist, for instance, but you will never know this if she gets frustrated and gives up after the first or second lesson. Again, you do not have to force her to do things she does not want to do, but at least make sure the things she does try get a fair shot.
    3. Enforce requirements: To make sure your child performs well in school, one of the most obvious steps is to use your parental authority to impose a certain amount of homework time every day. Similarly, you can make sure that a certain amount of time per day or week is spent on certain productive activities such as learning an instrument or practicing a sport. Or, even if you do not make specific time requirements, you can simply make sure your child always has two or three extracurricular activities or pursuits.
    4. Know when to quit: Your child has a finite amount of energy, and time spent on an activity that he is just not cut out for is time that could be spent on something worthwhile. So while it is good to enforce persistence and due effort, also try to learn to recognize when an activity or pursuit just is not going anywhere and is not worth the struggle.
    5. Be an achiever: Of course, it is important to remember that children learn much about the world by observing their parents, and it is obvious that parents who do not try hard at anything send negative messages about the benefits of putting effort into things. So if you want your child to achieve his or her full potential, make every effort to also do so yourself.

Second Pregnancy Fizzle: Designers are ‘over’ Kate Middleton’s Maternity style

Like a second child, a second pregnancy also gets less attention and fan fare. This is even true in the case of celebrity pregnancies. Take Kate Middleton, for example.  Shortly, after Buckingham Palace announced her second pregnancy last September, a survey said fans and followers were “over” her and all the hype that surrounded the Duchess especially during her first pregnancy. She had dropped in favorability ranking.
When she was expecting Prince George, now 1-year old, there were endless articles, blog posts and even a war of fans between hers and Kim Kardashian’s. The two women were expecting around the same time in 2013.
We too realized eventually that we weren’t going to see Middleton get too bold and daring with the fashion given the restrictions of being a royal. It’s a pretty conservative gig being a Duchess.
We’re not the only one either who noticed it. English fashion designer Zandra Rhodes reportedly said he hasn’t been following Catherine Duchess of Cambridge’s maternity style on account of being too busy.  *Gasp*
Duchess Cate’s due date is coming up soon and it’s certainly been less attention paid to the entire pregnancy compared to the past. We have seen her switch it up a bit and give her props for playing with more color, pastels, patterns and repeating outfits and setting a good eco-example!
