Why some celebrities seem to have longer than average length pregnancies

I spotted this question in the headline of a recent blog article querying the due date of the former American Idol champ & award-winning singer, Kelly Clarkson.

It is a common question or related comment many state in the comment section of stories about the singer’s pregnancy.
She is but the latest in a series of celebrity moms-to -be who are thought to have had very longer than usual pregnancies.
Some just seem to be “pregnant forever!”
In my memory, I recall people thinking  Alicia Keys, P!nk, Amber Rose and a few others had excessively long pregnancies. Others, seemingingly pop out a kid the week after you learn they’re preggers.
What’s the deal?
It has to do with a few factors:
1. releasing the news early. If a celebrity shares news of her pregnancy in the early second trimester, or like Kourtney Kardashian did in her second pregnancy in the first 12-weeks, then the public has 6 months of seeing plenty bump watch images and articles about the celeb.
2. popularity of the celeb. Some  celebs are more popular than others and/or are stalked more by paparazzi. Each day and photo means another article about the spotting to be published in one of several gossip sites.
3. heavy event season. Some celebs wind up knocked up while promoting a new project or during Tv upfronts or award season. Therefore, in addition to paparazzi pics in the rags, you’re seeing them in mainstream publications too. It can be overkill.
All of that makes it so every time you look up on your Computer screen over the course of 24 weeks make it appear like a very long long pregnancy.
There you go! It’s still just 40 weeks but we know exactly what you mean!

Study: Pregnancy is Contagious or Keeping Up with the Joneses includes Baby

No, you read that correctly. Recent research suggests that pregnancy can be contagious among friends.
According to Nicoletta Balbo, a researcher at the Carlo F. Dondena Center for Research on Social Dynamics at Bocconi University in Italy, women in the same social circle will start to plan to have a baby shortly after discovering a friend is expecting or has just delivered a baby too.
The researchers analyzed data  from thousands of study participants beginning when they were just teens in the 1990s.  Tracking the subjects via interviews over time, they discoverd a pattern:  in each friendship pair, after a woman had a baby, the likelihood that her friend would also have her first baby went up for about two years, and then declined.
Social influence and peer pressure are two ingredients that determine ones likes, dislikes and preferences, Health Me Up noted. This study enforces what we suspected. We tend to replicate or want similar things that of our friends.

10 Summertime Hacks you need to know about NOW

Summer is around the corner. Along with fun and sun, the season also brings bugs and unbearable heat! But you can beat the stresses of summer with these 10 hacks developed by our partners at Summer Nanny Jobs
  • 1. Keep a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep bugs away.  You can spend tons of money buying bug spray, and you’ll most likely end up feeling sticky, smelling like bug spray, and getting bitten by bugs anyway. An easy solution is to carry a dryer sheet with you, which is something most people have at home already anyway. By carrying it in your pocket you can ward off bugs; something about the smell keeps the bugs away from you.
  • 2. Sprinkle baking soda in sweaty shoes.  Running around in your shoes without socks is a regular occurrence during the summer time because everyone just wants to slip shoes on and go. Unfortunately, this also causes extra unwanted odor in your shoes.  To fix this problem sprinkle the inside of the shoes with baking soda to absorb the odors.  If you’d rather not have the powdery look in your shoes, you can create a sachet by using a rubber band wrapped around a few tablespoons of baking soda in a handkerchief.   Just put a sachet in each shoe and the odors will disappear.
  • 3. Trap fruit flies with apple cider vinegar.  Did you bring home fruit flies from the farmers market?  Fill a glass jar half full of cider vinegar and screw the lid back on.  Punch several holes in the lid and leave the jar where you have seen the fruit flies.  They will be gone in no time.
  • 4. Cool a sunburn with white vinegar.  Unfortunately, with the warm summer months comes the occasional sunburn.  To take the sting out of a sunburn soak clean soft cloths in white vinegar, wring them out and lay them on the sunburned skin.
  • 5. Coat feet with petroleum jelly and cover with socks at bedtime.  This trick will keep your feet soft and sandal ready all summer.  A little petroleum jelly on your elbows and knees will make sure they stay soft and smooth for all of those revealing summer outfits.
  • 6. Mix a can of cola with ketchup for a quick and easy barbeque sauce.  Figure out about how much sauce you want and add the cola to the ketchup to thin it out and add flavor and sweetness.  Brush on chicken or ribs during the last stages of cooking on the grill to avoid burning.
  • 7. Use conditioner to shave your legs in a pinch.  Did you forget to pack your shaving cream for your vacation?  That’s okay; you can use the sample bottle of conditioner that most hotels give you.  This will leave your legs smooth and silky soft.
  • 8. Apply coconut oil to bee stings and bug bites.  Coconut oil has anti-inflammatory properties and will help heal the sting or bite as well as soothe the pain.
  • 9. Straws make great strawberry hullers.  Take a normal straw and push it up through the base of the strawberry and come up under the hull.  Keep pushing and the hull will usually come right out.  Practice makes perfect with this, but it really works well when you get the hang of it and you won’t have all those strawberry seeds under your finger nails.
  • 10. Use cute cupcake papers to cover your drinks this summer.  When the weather turns nice eating and drinking outside becomes standard, and almost mandatory.  The problem with eating and drinking outside is keeping the bugs away from your food and drinks.  Get yourself some cupcake papers and use them to cover your drinks.  If you’re having a party the cupcake papers can even match the theme.  To make a drink cover you just need to punch a hole in the cupcake paper and stick a straw through.  Just make sure there are no bugs inside the straw before you drink.

Stay cool!

CMT Music Awards Red Carpet

Several of our Bellytich Bumpwatch alums looked radiant last night, June 4, at the CMT Awards held at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
One of my faves was Lady Antebellum‘s Hillary Scott who finally mixed up her usual black and went with a beautiful and colorful L’Wren Scott dress with Alexander McQueen (homage to designers who committed suicide?). The Brian Atwood heels were a bit clunky but other than that, fab!

Kristen Bell hosted the event and started out the evening on the red carpet in a Fall 2014 Zuhair Murad beaded V-neck evening gown. She later changed into a Monique Lhuiller Fall 2014 embroidered chiffon gown and later the designer’s long sleeved

leather embroidered cocktail dress and two other cute but dark-colored

dress. She looked very nice but could have mixed up the colors ideally.

My fave look was on Jennifer Nettles who wowed in a black sequined embellished Halsotn  top with wide-legged Max Mara pants! Fab when accented with Carrera y Carerra jewels and Neil Lane bracelet.

Melissa Rycroft also looked youthful in her flare mini-dress

Nicole Kidman looked quite youtful in an embroidered Giamattista Valli Spring 2014 couture embroidered mini dress which she altered a bit to add length.

Our Remixed version of that popular Buzzfeed Bougie Quiz

I saw that popular Buzzfeed How Bougie Are You?” Quiz that circulated among many of my friends on Facebook yesterday and I was astonished to see how low the scores were of some of my most “Bourgiest” of friends. Then I took the quiz myself and quickly realized why.
The items listed for people to check off if it applied to them or their life were not accurate as to the mindset of truly “Bougie” people. (Black Bourgeoisie Class)
Rather, the list appeared to be a random recitation of what people think being an upper middle class/affluent and educated African American is like. It was inaccurate and incomplete, to say the least.
Most of the answers also seemed based off of the mentality of those who want so badly to come off as if they are “better” than what society thinks blacks are like. (Read up on: Respectability Politics).
True bourgeoisie don’t have to neither care to prove to anyone that they’re from a privileged class. They see no value in it. They’re all about making or keeping their wealth, maintaining contacts and connections and advancing themselves while also giving back to community, and doing their part to enrich the lives of their community and others.
However, some people confuse “Ghettofabulous” and “Beoughetto” with authentic Bougie. Those in this former group, are more flashy and show-offy with their new found wealth and may say or do things so others will know that they “have made it.” (e.g. a name brand logo bags or may purchase bottle service at a table at the club)  However, in their attempts to appear cultured or high siddity, they will often slip up and reveal their authentic humble roots. Why hide it?
No one should be ashamed of where they came from and attempting to portray, often times transparently, themselves as being a certain way when they are not will have them come off as a caricature of a Cosby Show character.
Having been around the type, gone to law school with plenty and myself been accused of being very bougie often, I thought I’d offer a remixed version of the test using some of my friends as my personal muse.
And the list may come off as shallow, superficial and a bit elitist to some, but know that “Bougie is based more on socio-economic class than anything so there should’t be any begrudging the lifestyle of those who have money, whether they inherited or earned it.
Further, those who genuinely fall into the category do not necessarily look down on other members of their race and do not aspire to be thought of an “atypical” black person.
Never that.
To determine if you are truly a member of the authentic Bourgie class  head over to my Buzzfeed community contributor account and take my version of the  test!

Kourtney Kardashian is reportedly pregnant with her 3rd child

The rumor mill says that Kourtney Kardashian and long time beau Scott Disick are expecting their third child together. A source tells US Weekly that the couple, who are parents to 4-year old son Mason and 23-months old daughter Penelope, planned the latest editions.
Kardashian apparently told her sister Kim Kardashian during an episode of the family’s hit E! TV show Keeping Up with the Kardashians that she didn’t believe in birth control any longer, and wants to have more children.
Congrats if the early reporting proves true. You  never know.

Review: Skindinavia’s The Makeup Primer Spray keeps your face flawless all night

Our friends at Skindinavia sent us a complimentary sample of their first product launched in 5 years since the company was created: A make-up primer spray.  Apparently Lady GaGa  uses the company’s finishing spray on tour so I was excited to give the new product, which only launched last May, a try.
It came just in time as I was heading off to an event where I was judging a student app competition and learned last minute the event would be recorded. That meant I too could possibly have been photographed or videotaped and ended up online somewhere. Yikes! I usually try to keep public photos offline or to a minimum but when it’s out there, I have to look halfway decent.
I already  know the importance of primers as a base for make up application and realize the right primer can do wonders for helping your make-up job look flawless, last longer and delineate creasing and fading as the day or night wears on.
First, here is how my face generally looks unfiltered and without any make-up on:
Before heading to the event, I scoped some YouTube DIY make up tutorials for a natural matte look.
I started the application by spraying on the silicone- and paraben-free spray that the company says is loaded with vitamins, antioxidants and a proprietary temperature-control technology  (see how it works here) to limit and neutralize shine, I suppose.
I used the spray as a base, then added blush, powder, bronzer, natural lip color, mascara and eye liner for a fresh summer look. My makeup job was so-so (I’m an amateur after all) but the primer helped give it a polished look.
No wonder it got so much rave reviews from Essence, Allure, Vogue, Lucky and the TODAY show
Here is the final look with no photo filters used to enhance or edit the image:
The event I attended lasted from 5pm to 10pm at night (five hours) and by its end, although some of my make up had worn off, my skin  still looked pretty smooth and flawless, most likely because the primer had done its job.
Here is how it looked at the end of the night from a selfie I took in my car:
From its own tests and surveys, the  company notes that the primer reportedly “soothes redness, prevents breakouts and controls the appearance of oil, evens out skin tone and reduces large pores.”
Good stuff! I will be using this product all summer!
If you want your own, check out the website.  Prices start at $25.00 but  if you want to keep your face looking smooth and made up for the night, it’s worth the investment for sure.

10 Things DINKS (Dual Income No Kids) give up when TTC (Trying to Conceive)

Updating a piece I did on the 5 Things you need to do before having your first baby for you DINKs (Dual Income No Kids) out there. DINKs are people who are childless or child free and have two incomes and all the time and money they earn to spend on themselves.  For the DINKs that want to have children, you will need to know what’s in store.

Recently, I’ve come in contact with and read stories about people who have children and seemingly were unaware or unprepared for how much having children disrupts and alters their way of life.

So, I assembled a list of TEN things you will have to give up when you have kids.

Some of these are well known but because you never know what others’ know, here is a list:
  1. Sleep

From the day you bring home a tiny person who doesn’t know of, neither respects

the rule that says night is for sleeping, then you know you’re screwed.
  2. White or

    light colored carpet or furniture
    – Unless you don’t mind it ending up a

new shade of tie-dye by the time junior learns how to eat with his fingers or little

Esmeralda grows a fondness for crayons, sell, trade in or give away that post-modern fancy lily white Ethan Allen gallery sofa set you got when you purchased your first condo.
  3.  Low

    threshold of Patience
    – The 5th time your preschooler melts down

in the middle of the grocery store crying for candy and all eyes turn on you, you’ll realize you are

more patient than you ever thought
  4. Dignity

Because one of these days you may have to insert a tiny peen into an empty water bottle and collect pee

from your potty -trained son when a bathroom isn’t available.
  5. A clean

    car
    – Cheerios, toy cars, crumbs…it will be a smorgasbord of random pieces

of crap in every crevice, nook and cranny of your minivan. Be forewarned and fire armed with a mini-vac.
  6.  Weekends

Sleeping in? What’s that? In between little League games, dance recitals and

cries for breakfast, there’s no chance in heck you’ll be able to sleep til noon

    on a Saturday any longer.
  7.    Last

    minute Get-Away fares
–Unless you have a live in nanny, then… say goodbye

to those  $100 weekend deals to Arizona

    you spotted on Expedia.com.
  8. Arrogance – No more looking down on that woman

with no make-up on, wearing pajama bottoms and a head scarf at the late-night pharmacy counter when that woman is YOU getting cough medicine for a sick kid.
  9.  A day

    without bending over
    – To pick up toys, de-clutter a messy kids’ room, a

tantrum-throwing kid or a crawling baby going out of bounds.
  10. A piece of your heart that will forever hold

love, affection, adoration and the interest of your little one or ones forever.

Now you know for sure And knowing is half the battle!
