The 2014 FIFA World Cup started today which means in 32 nations worldwide there will be raucous simultaneous roaring when a team scores a goal. In some countries, the government declares a national holiday when their team make the finals because it really is that serious in some parts of the world.
And women who are soccer (or futbol) fans can show their love for their team on their nails with nail art or nail stickers and designs.

101 Fun Things to Do with the Kids this Summer

Summer may be a time to relax, but tell that to kids who are bouncing off the walls or shrieking “I’m bored” every five minutes. How on earth are parents and nannies supposed to keep kids entertained, active and out of trouble for an entire summer?

The trick is to plan ahead. Brainstorm ideas for things to do now, so you don’t wind up spending the entire summer watching cartoons.

Jill Tipograph, summer expert and founder of Everything Summer, suggests that you: “Take advantage of those bright sunny days and warm summer nights and plan something new a couple of times a week. Outdoor adventures don’t have to be extreme — explore a new neighborhood or walk as a family to get a healthy after-dinner snack.”

Jesse Koller, mom and publisher of the parenting blog Play, Create and Explore, likes to keep kids entertained with crafts. Sheeven holds regular art workshops for local kids. “We have a blast focusing on mostly process art and projects, as well as some sensory activities.”

Start creating your summer bucket list today. If you need inspiration, we’ve come up with 101 things that will keep kids happy — and you sane.

1. Bake cookies for ice cream sandwiches.

2. Volunteer at a nature center.

3. Make a photo journal or a family yearbook.

4. Have a luau in the backyard.

5. Visit the beach and collect shells.

6. Make a fort out of cardboard boxes.

7. Visit a farmer’s market.

8. Pick berries at a nearby orchard.

9. Have a picnic at a state park.

10. Make ice cream. Tipograph loves using YayLab’s ice cream ball, which you fill with ice cream base and kick around until frozen.

11. Go canoeing at a local lake.

12. Build a sandcastle.

13. Write and illustrate your own book and have it published into an actual hardcover book using IlluStory.

14. Forget cooking — set up an ice cream sundae buffet for dinner.

15. Clean up trash at a local park.

16. Have a backyard campfire…or just use the grill! Roast hot dogs on sticks, pop popcorn and finish off with s’mores.

17. Stage an A to Z scavenger hunt, where you have to find something that starts with every letter.

18. Make homemade pizza.

19. Print out a list of children’s books that have won Caldecott Medals. Visit the local library throughout the summer and try to read as manyas you can.

20. Go for a walk and then make a collage from nature objects you find along the way.

21. Take bread to a creek and feed the ducks.

22. Have a water balloon fight.

23. Practice your origami skills and make objects to hang from the ceiling.

24. Go biking on a trail

25. Interview an older relative about what life was like when they were young.

26. Plan a picnic at a local park — or in your backyard.

27. Set up a lemonade stand.

28. Create salad spinner art: Place circles of paper inside a cheap salad spinner, dab tempera paints on top, cover and spin away.

29. Practice making interesting shadow puppets and then put on a show with your characters.

30. Plant a garden of herbs and veggies.

31. Make a sidewalk chalk mural.

32. Go ice blocking (sledding) in the grass with a towel-covered block of ice.

33. Have an outdoor painting party using huge canvases or cardboard.

34. Visit a fish hatchery.

35. Plant a butterfly garden with flowers.

36. Pretend to be pirates for a day — dress up in costumes, plan a treasure hunt and talk like a pirate.

37. Make an indoor sandbox using colored rice: mix 4 cups of rice with 3 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of food coloring and let dry overnight.

38. Turn the backyard into a carnival — set up a face painting area and games like ring toss.

39. Make totem poles out of paper towel rolls and decorate them.

40. Visit a museum you’ve never been to.

41. Make a giant hopscotch or Twister game on the lawn (with spray paint) or driveway (with chalk).

42. String beads into jewelry.

43. Make a bird house out of Popsicle sticks.

44. Learn about stargazing and identify as many constellations as possible — see if there are any local astronomy groups for kids.

45. Create leis with wildflowers.

46. Go fossil hunting near a lake.

47. Break out your baseball gloves and start a game, sandlot style.

48. Make paper boats and race them in a kiddie pool using straws to propel them.

63. Blend your own smoothie.

64. Set up a bike wash and raise money for a local charity.

65. Batter up at a batting cage.

66. Let kids paint the sidewalk or patio with plain old water and sponge brushes. When their creation dries, they can begin again.

67. Bake cupcakes in ice cream cones and then decorate them.

68. Assemble a family cookbook with all your favorite recipes.

69. Go horseback riding.

70. Make popsicles in Dixie cups using fruit juices.

71. Catch fireflies in a jar (and let them go at the end of the night).

72. Stage your own Summer Olympics with races, hurdles and relays.

73. Create a backyard circus — kids can pretend to be animals and dress up as clowns.

74. Decorate bikes and have a neighborhood Fourth of July parade.

75. Take a sewing/crochet/knitting class.

76. Make Mexican paper flowers using different colored tissue paper.

77. Go to a flea market.

Bellyitch to sponsor Miss Ghana USA Pageant contestant

This Sunday was the Miss USA pageant won by Miss Nevada, Nia Sanchez, a notable choice because she was the first contestant ever to be crowned from that state. She is also the second “woman of color” to win a major pageant representing the US in a year. Earlier this year, the Miss America pageant crowned Nina Duvuluri, an Indo-Asian American as its 2014 queen. It all reflects the changing diversity and demographic of the US population.
And now Bellyitch is getting into the pageant biz a bit too! We are helping to sponsor and support 30-year old DC-area pre-cancer survivor Diane Tackie vie for the Miss Ghana USA pageant set to take place this July 12th in New York City.
Tackie is a graduate of the prestigious Eleanor Roosevelt Science and Technology program and a physician assistant who treats active duty US military corpsmen at the Pentagon where she works.
The editorial staff chose her not just because she is a close family friend of the blog founder, but also because we were moved by her very touching pitch and the cause she will champion if she wins could help save the lives of young girls and women.
Read it for yourself:

I would like to take this time and opportunity to express my sincere gratitude, as I am a finalist for Miss Ghana USA 2014.

About a month or so ago, I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and interview to be a part of this pageant, my very first actually. Being a Ghanaian American I found it appropriate to partake in this pageant and utilize the strengths that I have been blessed. Being a Board Certified Physician Assistant for the past four years, I felt this would be a great opportunity to implement a plan of care for the platform I have chose in women’s health, specifically Breast Cancer Awareness in Ghana.

Having breast surgery for fibroadenoma at 21, I can attest to the fact that a monthly self breast examination should be an essential part of every young woman’s way of life, as the diagnosis of breast cancer is occurring at a much younger age in women.

More recently, “Triple Negative Breast Cancer” has  become prevalent in Ghana, a form of breast cancer that is very difficult to treat. I need everyone to please help to move forward with this pageant and implement my Breast Cancer Awareness platform. A portion of proceeds will be given to the Sweden Ghana Medical Center, to purchase breast models to help in the breast cancer awareness program. This program uses these breast models to teach the average young lady on the street to find the lump in the breast.

Among other things the Sweden Ghana Medical  Center  provides treatment for  many breast cancer patients using radiation and chemotherapy.

Brilliant!
Currently, the Accra, Ghana-born pageant contestant, who says she was a shy child, has come out of her shell. She models  part time with Modelogic Wilhelmina, hosts events and is known as a DC area socialite.
She also takes time to do service projects with her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority Incorporated. and the Katie Able Foundation. Recently, the gorgeous and statuesque model was honored in the WKYSDC Top 30 Under 30 list, for young professionals in Washington, DC area in February 2014.
If you want to join us in support, check out her Go FUND ME page and help bring this survivor’s dream one step closer to reality!

Thanks! We’re excited and can’t wait until the contest this summer!

Study: Exercise linked to better sleep for pregnant women

Pregnant women who get regular moderate exercise in early pregnancy are likely to sleep better than those who don’t, a new study shows.
Nearly 25% of pregnant women report poor sleep beginning early in pregnancy, said study investigator Michele Okun, PhD, senior research associate, University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. Yet few studies have looked at the benefits of exercise on sleep during pregnancy.
The study was presented here at SLEEP 2014, the 28th annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
In the absence of medical or obstetric complications, 30 minutes of moderate exercise is recommended for pregnant women on most, if not all, days of the week. Yet, national data show that only 23% of pregnant women meet these recommendations.
Dr. Okun and colleagues evaluated the effects of exercise on sleep efficiency in 183 pregnant women. Daily diaries and actigraphy were used to collect sleep and exercise data during 10 to 12 weeks, 14 to 16 weeks, and 18 to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
After controlling for relevant covariates, they found that women who got moderate regular exercise had higher mean sleep efficiency and shorter mean wake after sleep onset times than women who did not exercise.
“There was no dose-effect with exercise,” Dr. Okun reported. “High levels of exercise are not better for sleep than moderate levels of exercise, so you don’t have to do a lot to get the benefits of exercise in pregnancy.”

Breastfeeding mom’s social media photo evokes controversy…again *sigh*

By now, you may have seen the story in TODAY or any number of media outlets about California State University Long Beach graduate Karlesha Thurman who was captured a couple weeks ago breastfeeding her 3-month old daughter Aaliyah during the graduation ceremony while still in her cap and gown.
After getting her diploma, her baby became too fussy so she had a friend bring her down to nurse her and she did so with no fuss or complaint from other graduates. A friend took a photo of Thurman nursing because she thought it was cute.
Later, Thurman posted the photo on the (now-deleted) Facebook page Black Women Do Breastfeed, a page set up to normalize breastfeeding among a community that usually doesn’t support breastfeeding and are least likely to nurse their babies and to do it long because of the shame and stigma. Black women are least likely to breastfeed and when they do stop earlier than other women, Centers for Disease Control reports note.
Thurman’s photo had the dual purpose of showing that despite getting pregnant in her final year of college and not being married to her child’s father, she persevered, overcame the odds and graduated
“I honestly thought that as a society, people were more understanding to breast-feeding and understood the importance of breast-feeding,” Thurman, 25, told the site. “It’s not disgusting, it’s not a bad thing, it’s not a negative thing,” Thurman added. “It’s the best thing for my daughter. More people should do it.”
“I posted it to show it’s natural, it’s normal, there’s nothing wrong with it,” Thurman said. “I didn’t even know there was a big controversy about breast-feeding in public until all of this happened.”
Only the image went viral somehow and has sparked vigorous debate, once again, over whether the act, in that setting and whether posting the image of it in social media was appropriate.
Some have slut shamed her over her nipples being exposed and others said it was just inappropriate setting to be nursing, that she should have planned earlier and pumped so her baby could have been nourished using a bottle; and/or  that she should have at least covered her boobs or done it in private. Some said she should show modesty, and been more discreet.

Bellyitch has posted on similar controversies over the past four years.  We covered breastfeeding in social media shaming in 2012 with Eric Benet, Gisele Bundchen  in 2013 and model Ashley Nicole in March 2014.

Sadly, it seems that when black women do it, there’s the most uproar.

Today, I replied with a meme I created and shared on my Tumblr page:

…And a Buzzfeed post I wrote after a friend told me that the nipple exposure is what really made it different than an average cleavage photo.

I had to point out the 8 Times Celebrity Women who are not Karlesha Thurman showed their nipples in images that circulated in social media but  didn’t shut down the Internet in dialogue over breasts.

Melody Thornton of the Pussycat Dolls, Actress Sharon Stone, Pop singer Ciara, The Fantastic Four actress Jessica Alba and Rihanna and Rihanna and Rihanna and Rihanna all bared the nips but to less uproar as we’ve seen in two days over a recent college graduate breastfeeding her baby out of necessity and shared on her private Facebook page.
Aaaah society and our sexual double standards and low tolerance for breastfeeding our young.
Personally, I’m tired of talking about this. Let’s #NormalizeBreastfeeding already so we don’t have to keep having this debate over and over again.

NY Mets Daniel Murphy is face of paternity leave at White House event (VIDEO)

At the start of the Baseball season, New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy made lots of news over his decision to miss the first two games, including the season opener, in order to take paternity leave and be with his new wife during the birth of their first child together.
Famous sports radio DJs Mike Francesca and NFL vet Boomer Esiason went on a tirade suggesting Murphy’s wife get a C-Section so the breadwinner could do what puts food on their plate.
For his bravery to put his baby over the game, Murphy was a featured speaker at an event with business leaders, administration officials and other working fathers at the White House yesterday. He spoke about the situation and challenges of balancing work and life.

About the critics to his decision, Murphy said, “I wanted to be there. I wanted to be there for my wife and for my son,” adding “Long after they tell me I am not good enough to play baseball anymore, I’ll be a husband, and I’ll be a father.”
The event also promoted  the Obama administration’s policies on paid parental leave and “extensive workplace flexibility option.”
The event is in advance of a June 23rd  White House Summit on Working Families that will involve engaging groups and individuals “to identify initiatives that benefit America’s working families, American businesses, and the American economy,” a White House release stated.
In order to stay competitive, companies need to attract and retain the best talent, and policies that support working families are crucial to these goals, the White House also noted.
