Celebrity Mom Experts Backlash: Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Mama v. Critics

From Kristin Cavallari and Jenny McCarthy‘s vaccine stances, to Snooki’s expert book on parenting published within the same year of delivering her first baby to Jessica Alba‘s Honest company  to the numerous celebs who’ve launched maternity (Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Victoria Beckham) and baby clothing lines beyond, there seems to be a refreshed backlash against celebrity mom parenting experts of late.
Recently,  Gwyneth Paltrow and her controversial statements comparing Hollywood and 9-5 moms, and her reportedly pretentious stance on parenting were the subject of quite a few news articles.
And now, the latest celebrity mother to face the ire and snark of critics is Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Alicia Silverstone.
The Clueless star’s latest book “Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, A Radiant Pregnancy, A Sweeter Birth and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning” triggered such a visceral response from Herald Sun  writer Wendy Tuohy that she lashed out  against it and other celeb experts  in a commentary on the site.
It starts:

IN BREAKING news from Hollywood, parents who don’t sleep with their baby are guilty of borderline neglect, nappies are bad for babies (they should do their business “in the grass”), post-natal depression is what you get for doing your diet wrong — oh, and tampons can give you infertility.

And it doesn’t get kinder from there! Oy! Read the entire piece HERE
No doubt, because of their high profile and huge following, celebrity parents are able to use their strong brand presence among general audiences to secure clothing lines, book deals and command a platform to espouse whatever they wish.
What are your thoughts generally? Understandable cashing in on their branding to make a living or exploiting their impressionable audiences for a quick buck?

Survey: Moms don’t want flowers and cards on Mother’s Day

A recent MyTime.com survey found that moms want different gifts than what they get.

While 52% of men give flowers or cards on Mother’s Day, only 16% want those gifts. Most prefer something creative involving family photos (23%), a gift certificate for a massage or facial (21%) or a gift certificate for a salon gift (17%).

MyTime, which sells instant gift certificates for those most-wanted items on mom’s list, discovered through its survey that most (73%) of the moms among the 1,000 survey participants expected to go out to eat and do something other than what they normally do on any other day.

This special something can include a trip out of town (23%), getting pampered at a spa (20%), a day off from chores (15%) or a visit to a salon (13%).

It’s not too late to get one of these preferred items if you haven’t picked up a gift for mom yet. The survey also showed that  42% of men will make plans either a few days before Mother’s Day or will wait until the day itself.  Meanwhile, 6% of men admit that in the past they have forgotten Mother’s Day altogether. doh!

10 Celebrities who DON’T want to have children

Top: Oprah Winfrey, Kim Cattrall, Cameron Diaz, George Clooney, Chelsea Handler, Bottom: Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneres, Renee Zelwegger, Margaret Cho and Janean Garofolo have all openly said they do not desire to be parents.
Jennifer Aniston was thought to be pregnant again as many gossip sites reported again that she was. Her reps had to deny once again, that she is not.
So many sites, like this one, are all about the celebrity “bumpwatch” and stalking pregnant celebrities’ growing bellies, but there are some that we will never get to do that with.
The Huffington Post assembled a slide show of 12 celebrities who  have said they do not want to have children. We’ve put together a collage of 10 best known on the list.
Some like Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney were of no surprise as they’ve been quite vocal about their decision for years now, but there were a few surprises like Renee Zelwegger and Cameron Diaz.

Time magazine’s article “The Childfree Life – Having It All Without Children” this August was the subject of much fodder, chatter and discussions on various blogs, websites and online communities. It is also an interesting discussion either way.

I did a post back in 2010 about the struggles between those that are purposefully child-free and the challenges they face in a world that favors parenting and presupposes most people of child bearing years want to eventually become parents.

Check it out if you can HERE.

New Source of Stress: Inaccuracies in Drugstore Test that tells how pregnant a woman is (VIDEO)

A new pregnancy test which promises to tell women how far along they are in their pregnancy is causing grief among some women in their first trimester.
According to CBS news, some women who have used the ClearBlue Advanced pregnancy test have reported that the tests are indicating they are farther along or not as far compared to what their doctors tell them.  The test, which is supposed to predict whether a woman is 1-2, 2-3 or over 3 weeks pregnant, is causing some to worry that their babies are not developing at a normal rate for their gestational age, or that they are too far along (perhaps an indicator of twins).
It’s causing stress although experts say that women should never take at-home tests like these too literally and to instead rely on their hcg levels until their babies reach the age of viability and when other doctor visit tests can accurately predict their pregnancy progress.

Celeb Review: The VTech Safe & Sound Video & Audio Baby Monitor

We asked new 2nd-time mom, Grammy-nominated World Music songstress Wayna to test out the new VTEch Safe & Sound® Pan & Tilt Full-Color Video & Audio Monitor (retail: $129.99) shortly after giving birth to her second child, daughter Zema,  last month with husband Kyle Stephen. The results were a glowing review.
Here is what the mom to 3-year old daughter, Beza, and much buzzed-about singer-songwriter had to say:

“When I had my first child 4 years ago, a video monitor was the first baby shower item I asked my loved ones to splurge on.

Hearing my newborn daughter on a traditional monitor  wasn’t enough, I wanted the assurance of watching her — of seeing first hand if her swaddle had come undone or if her back was arched from gas bubbles or if her face revealed whether the noises coming from her nursery were sweet baby dreams or the early signs of a cry for food. The more information I had, the better, and the better I could care for her while peacefully carrying out whatever multi-task I was busy doing.

When I hooked up my fancy video monitor with the even fancier price tag, I was surprised to see that the video feed was nothing like the image on the box. Sadly, it looked more like an infrared video than a TV commercial. But I was even more disappointed when the unit broke after only a few weeks use. Granted, it was tipped off the edge of the crib, but it was only one drop and had landed on double-padded carpet!

Given this experience, my expectations when trying out the V Tech video monitor were measured.

I was surprised, however, to find that all my previous hopes were fulfilled in this device and then some.  I was impressed by the perfectly clear, color TV-like video feed; the ability to adjust the camera angle from the receiver to get the best possible view if the baby had moved; the battery-saving mode that enables you to leave the receiver unplugged for longer; the amplified sound that, like a rear view mirror, makes voices appear louder than they are, helping you get to the scene of an accident before it actually happens; and finally and probably best of all, the ability to convert your video monitor into a walkie talkie and converse with someone in the nursery.

On the subject of durability, my toddler knocked the V Tech video monitor over at least 3 times on hard wood floor, and it still functions perfectly!

With all this functionality, flexibility, and extra features, the question isn’t should you buy the V Tech monitor and use it in your nursery. The question is: will it work in a college dormitory? To be determined!

How fun! Thanks Wayna for a great review! We’re gonna have to give that a try with our little ones around here.
