Go See ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’, Out Tomorrow!

With Summer out for my middle kid and his friend and one week to go until youngest and her friend got out for the year, we snuck out for a school night family movie night, compliments of our friends at Universal Studios to see Ilumination’s tenth feature, The Secret Life of Pets 2.

It had been 3 years since the last comedic animated blockbuster was released, so it was high time to catch up with Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt), his now married with toddler owner Ellie Kemper and their other dog Duke (Eric Stonestreet).

Animals have a life of their own when their owners are away which is the overall theme of this franchise.

There are three mini tales in one in this movie.

The family head out on a road trip with toddler, Liam, who Max guards with his life to visit family at a farm in the country.

There they meet up with an Alpha Dog named Rooster (Harrison Ford) who keeps the farm in line and eventually, teaches Max about being brave and taking risks for the ones you love.

While away from the apartment in the city, Max’s girlfriend, an adorable white furball Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell). It’s slapstick good time and the ultimate rescue is adorable and clever. I won’t spoil it for you.

On the other side of town, the first iteration of the series villain-turned adorable domestic bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) now believes he is a superhero and accompanies a brave new dog on the block, a Shih Tzu named Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) on an adventure to rescue a circus tiger from a an evil owner of a traveling show who keeps his animals in line by being cruel to them.

We enjoyed the film tremendously which is entertaining to children (our group included two 14 year olds and two 11-year olds) and adults. The woman next to me couldn’t help laugh out loud all through the movie.

At the end, my daughter’s pal, Clio, had decided she wanted to return to see it again! I agree! It’s so adorable, and fun that it’s worth a second trip.

I love this remix of one of my fave songs, “Lovely Day” by Bill Withers for the soundtrack. Puerto Rican Latin trap singer, Ozuna, best known for his hits “La Modelo” and “Síguelo Bailando” sings it.

Check out the Lyrical video for it!

The Secret Life of Pets 2 is produced by the same team behind behind Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, and is written by returning Pets screenwriter Brian Lynch.

The film is directed by returning filmmaker Chris Renaud, who also directed Illumination’s Despicable Me series and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.

Overall, the kids LOVED it!! A good mix of comedy and life lessons. It’s a wonderful family date night movie!

It Comes out this Friday, June 7 to theaters nationwide!!! Go see it!

JPMorgan Chase Settles Paternity Leave Suit for $5M

gavel

JPMorgan Chase will pay $5 million to settle a class action lawsuit with male employees who alleged the company discriminated against them when it denied them the same amount of paid parental leave given to women at the company, according to a statement from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

Chase employee Derek Rotondo — whose sex discrimination charge led to the class action, according to ACLU — said in a complaint that he had asked to take 14 weeks of “primary caregiver” leave after his son was born, in line with Chase’s policy that such caregivers were allowed to take up to 16 weeks of paid leave following birth of a child.

But Rotondo alleged Chase’s HR department denied this request, saying that mothers were presumptively considered primary caregivers, while fathers were instead eligible for only two weeks of parental leave unless they could show their partners or spouses were incapacitated or had returned to work.

Rotondo filed suit in 2017 alleging sex discrimination in violation of  Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and state law, ACLU said. After the charge was filed, Chase gave Rotondo 16 weeks of paid leave and clarified its policy as gender-neutral.

Members of the class include all male JPMorgan Chase employees nationwide who took the maximum amount of non-primary caregiver leave between 2011 and 2017, and who would have otherwise qualified for paid primary caregiver leave.

Annual Baby Crawling Race Went Down This Week

Lithuania baby race crawling baby

The 20-year tradition of having toddlers race to the finish in an annual baby crawl race went down in Lithuania this past Saturday, June 1 in the capital of Vilnius.

About 25 babies participated and crawled down a 16.4 foot red carpet, according to Reuters.

The contestants ranged in ages from 7 months to 1 year. Their parents were at the finish line, luring their kid to the end with treats, toys and balloons, as seen in video (above) of the event.

While researching for this post, I noticed Hawaii had one earlier this month as well. Here is the Eventbrite registration info! Too fun!

TSA Now Allows Parents to Bring CBD Products for Kids in Their Carry On

The TSA quietly updated its website to allow parents to carry on CBD containing products for their children with epilepsy and other conditions that rely on CBD for treatment.

The United States Transportation Security Administration quietly updated its rules to permit parents of children with epilepsy to bring Food And Drug Administration-approved medical marijuana products as well as certain types of CBD-containing medication and products on carry on planes.

NBC News reported that the agency changed the rules last weekend and updated the language on its website.

CBD products that contain any THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana that gets you high, will not be permitted, nor will recreational marijuana products that contain THC.

NBC News pointed out that it’s not clear how the TSA plans to test products for the presence of THC; the agency says it would refer those cases to law enforcement.

The TSA updated the “What Can I Bring” section of its online regulations to reflect news of an FDA-approved epilepsy medication containing CBD oil.

“TSA was made aware of an FDA-approved drug that contains CBD oil for children who experience seizures from pediatric epilepsy,” the organization confirmed in a statement to Fox News. “To avoid confusion as to whether families can travel with this drug, TSA immediately updated TSA.gov once we became aware of the issue.”

The CBD products must be hemp-derived, and must meet the criteria described by the 2018 Farm Bill

It hasn’t been easy for parents.

Last year, British airport officials seized CBD oil from a 12-year old who has epilepsy though the boy’s mom is still fighting officials over there for the decision.

A consumer reports study found that more than a quarter of people in the U.S. say they’ve tried CBD—a compound in marijuana and hemp that doesn’t get you “high” for a slew of mental and physical reasons. One out of 7 of those people said they use it every day.

CBD oils, or cannabinoid oils which are usually derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, are often sold as relaxation or pain-relief supplements

In June 2019, the FDA approved “Epidiolex (cannabidiol) [CBD] oral solution for the treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome,” the FDA wrote in a  press announcement.

The legality of CBD oils containing trace amounts of THC currently varies from state to state.

The TSA will be briefing its officers on the new policy regarding the FDA-approved drug.

The “medical marijuana” section of the guidelines now says “products/medications that contain hemp-derived CBD or are approved by the FDA are legal as long as it is produced within the regulations defined by the law under the Agriculture Improvement Act 2018.”

Medications fitting that description can be packed in both checked and carry-on luggage — albeit with special instructions.

“Possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil products, remain illegal under federal law,” the TSA added in its emailed statement to Fox News.

“TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law, including possession of marijuana and certain cannabis-infused products.”

Shocking! How Clutter Messes Up Your Life, Mood, Relationships

Most people’s homes can become cluttered from time to time. Whether it’s last night’s takeaway box or the countless pet toys that make their way around your home, it’s easy for it to build up. There are several detrimental health effects that have been associated with the amount of clutter in your home.

Blindshut conducted a survey to find out how clutter is affecting Brits, how they deal with clutter and is it a major factor in their lives. Some of the results were shocking.

The results could easily translate to American homes as well!

Clutter bombards our minds when it surrounds us. It causes our senses to work in overdrive and when this begins to build, stress can begin interfering with your ability to lead a normal life. You might begin to feel fatigued, irritable and find it hard to concentrate on the smallest of things. Nearly 1 in 5 Brits told us that clutter is almost always increasing their stress levels.

According to Cath Hiddle, an organizer and decluttering expert from Clear the Clutter, “clutter isn’t often recognized as a source of stress, but it can make a major impact on our health and well being:

  • As well as overtaking our physical space, clutter can overtake our minds as it causes our senses to work overtime to try to process what needs to be done.
  • Following on from this, it is then difficult to focus on tasks as clutter is distracting.
  • It can cause frustration when items can’t be located quickly or easily.
  • Clutter creates anxiety when people feel that they are unable to get on top of it or get to the bottom of the pile.”

Clutter can lead to you feeling overwhelmed. Over 82% of Brits’ mood is affected by clutter in some way. If clutter is allowed to pile up, it can often feel like it’s impossible to clear it on your own, so the problem becomes worse as the pile builds. A messy room sends signals to your brain to take action, but it’s up to you to act on those signals.

DOWNLOAD DECLUTTR TO HELP CLEAR THE JUNK

Coral Sapphire, an English Teacher from Newcastle upon Tyne with OCD experienced the effects of clutter on her mood, telling us “it creates a feeling of suffocation and I am unable to sleep in cluttered rooms. It heightens any underlying feelings of worry.”

Over 47% of the public have thought twice about inviting someone to their house because of the amount of clutter. This is often because clutter is seen as a negative or embarrassing thing, but it’s easy to end up with a cluttered home if you don’t keep on top of it.

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine found that people who are hesitant to throw out their junk show increased brain activity in two parts of the brain responsible for cravings, conflict and pain.

Ben Edwards, a self-confidence expert and relationship coach, tells us “Our environment reflects our state of mind, which impacts our relationships, work life and productivity. You can tell a lot about a person from their home; if they have a minimalist, clean house, this often means that they like to keep their thoughts organised too.

However, it could mean the opposite! This could mean they have a lot going on in their head, and this is a way of counterbalancing that. Meanwhile, people who may feel they haven’t got a lot going on in their lives might hoard as a distraction technique”.

According to a recent Pew Research poll, sharing the household task of clearing clutter and doing chores is the third most important factor in a successful marriage. Clutter can become a regular topic of disagreements with the people you live with.

In the survey Blindshut conducted, 66.5% of people admitted to arguing over clutter with a cohabitant, with over 10% of people arguing about clutter frequently.

The main benefits of decluttering are clear. Ben Edwards adds “There is also a correlation between clutter in the home and relationship difficulties, more specifically, arguments. It’s not surprising that statistically, most arguments occur in the kitchen, for this is where the majority of household mess accumulates. One person’s expectations of cleanliness may be vastly different to another’s and it is the discrepancies in these expectations that can give rise to arguments, so it’s important to establish a clear understanding of how the house will be kept tidy to maintain harmony!”

Household chores are an essential part of keeping your home clutter-free. By completing them regularly, it will help you stay on top of your clutter. Over a quarter of Brits says that washing the dishes causes the most friction in their home. A recent study by esure insurance showed that British couples spend around 40 minutes every day arguing about household chores. Arguing with your partner causes your stress levels to skyrocket and your heartbeat increases considerably.

Friction caused over household chores and clutter can lead to you feeling down and affect your mental health. Coral Sapphire told us that “I would say that an improved mental state actually helps you to declutter. When I’m not feeling mentally well, although clutter makes me feel worse, I find it hard to let things go or have the motivation to get rid of things.”

One in 10 of the British public wait months before dealing with clutter. Depending on how long you let clutter build in your home, the health effects can become more substantial. A 2017 study found that a cluttered home can promote overeating or binge eating. It can also cause more accidents as the chances of tripping over clutter increases as it builds up.

One of the reasons that clutter builds is because it can be hard to let go of an object. Over 25% of people surveyed said that an item can be unused for years before throwing it away. This leads to a constant build-up of clutter in a quarter of British homes. Excessive clutter can adversely affect air quality and lead to a pest infestation, both of which have a detrimental impact on health.

As well as the exercise you get from cleaning your home regularly, a study at Indiana University recently found that cleaning your home lowers stress and fatigue levels as when you live in a messy home, you are subconsciously reminded of work that needs to be finished. Work surfaces that are regularly cleaned can help lessen the spread of germs, with the kitchen being the prime target because of the amount of food and liquid in the area.

Over 7% of Brits admitted to cleaning their home yearly. A clean home also helps to alleviate allergy and asthma symptoms.

A cluttered home can also make it difficult to fall asleep, according to Cath Hindle. “Interestingly, several studies have shown that seeing clutter sends a signal to our brains that our work or tasks are unfinished which in turn makes it difficult to relax or fall asleep. A cluttered space makes you feel restless. People with a cluttered bedside table are likely to have a more interrupted sleep, go to sleep later and wake up earlier.

Clutter’s impact on our senses makes it difficult for us to focus on important or difficult tasks and can invade both our physical and mental space, which stops us thinking creatively and productively.”’

In a cluttered home, it can be hard to find the objects you’re looking for. This can cause anxiety if you’re late for work or can’t find what you need for a certain activity. Over 86% of survey participants told us that they struggle to find objects around their home, with over a quarter of Brits occasionally finding objects hard to find.

“Clutter can impact your ability to focus on daily tasks and sap your creativity and productivity levels. Think about the areas of your home that you use for work or general admin and planning – perhaps a home office, kitchen table or a corner of your living space – are these areas kept clean, tidy and well organised?

Clutter in your home is also a hindrance to relaxation and can impact the quality of your sleep. This is particularly true for clutter and mess in the bedroom, so decluttering here will help you create a peaceful ’sanctuary space”, says Alexandra Lees, co-founder of Wu Wei Wisdom.

Your wardrobe is perhaps the best example of the kind of life you lead when it comes to clutter. Clothes tick all the boxes when it comes for reasons to keep hold of them: they can be sentimental, you might be able to fit back into them in the future, the item is barely worn and is seen as a waste of money, they suit a certain event or occasion, you’re keeping the item “just in case” or an item was a gift and you feel guilty about throwing it away. Nearly a quarter of Brits told us that they have only worn a few (less than 25%) of the clothes in their wardrobe in the past year. Recent research suggested that Britons keep £10bn worth of unused clothes in their wardrobes.

If you’re thinking about beginning to declutter, Cath Hiddle suggests “As with most projects, it’s probably a good idea to start off small. Pick a drawer or cupboard and start with that to ascertain how easy you find it to sort through your belongings and decide what is important and whether you can sort and organise them in a logical way that works for you.

One of the main reasons that Clear the Clutter’s clients get in touch is when they feel that a decluttering project is too big to be faced alone or there is a strong emotional attachment to objects and belongings that people feel controlled by. Having an independent opinion or somebody to support decision making often gives clients the legitimacy to let go of things that have been weighing them down or holding them back.

Memorial Day Photo Of Kids Visiting Dad’s Grave Goes Viral Again

Today, we honor the memory of those who died in war fighting for freedoms and other reasons.

A two-year old photo of two boys visiting their deceased soldier dad’s gravesite is making the viral rounds once again.

I’m sharing the background of their story for those who are interested in knowing the very bittersweet and tender backstory from 2017:

Brothers Mylan and Mason Brazel visited the grave of their father, Staff Sgt. Alfred Brazel, in a touching scene at Arlington National Cemetery for the first time since his death from cancer at 37 in July

As brothers Mason and Mylan Brazel visited their father’s tombstone at Arlington National Cemetery for the first time, the young boys felt like they were just having a normal conversation with dad.

Kait Brazel, 29, captured the touching scene as sons Mason, 8, and Mylan, 5, curled up in front of the tombstone of Army Staff Sgt. Alfred “Fred” Brazel, who died at 37 of Stage 4 rectal cancer on July 31 after being diagnosed only five months earlier.

“I felt proud while we were there,” Brazel told TODAY in an email. “Obviously it was sad because the boys are talking to their dad and he can’t talk back, but really I’m proud because throughout the fight our goal was to be realistic with the boys without the losing their innocence as children.

“Seeing them share their lives with their dad’s headstone, I knew we accomplished exactly that.”

The boys went to every doctor’s appointment with their dad during his fight with cancer, and their parents answered every hard question they asked about his diagnosis, Kait Brazel said.

“We never once addressed it as a sad thing,” Brazel said. “That was the attitude and mentality we had throughout the battle. We as a family lived and continue to live life to the fullest in every moment.

“We don’t shelter them from ‘adult things.’ It was their dad and they were a part of the fight. We have always been very open with them, and because of this I believe they have handled the whole journey amazingly.”

The family drove 24 hours from their home in Colorado Springs, CO, to Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 20 for the touching visit.

It was an emotional journey that came three months after Fred Brazel’s funeral, a heart-wrenching day that was captured by professional photographer and family friend Alishia Potter in August.

At one point during the visit at Arlington, Mylan curled up and took a nap in front of the tombstone, while Mason updated his dad about winning a trophy in swimming.

Kait is also hoping the pictures bring attention to the dangers to soldiers from burn pits. She believes Fred got cancer from exposure to toxic chemicals during a deployment in Iraq.

After their trip to Arlington, the Brazels spent Thanksgiving with family in Boston and then went to Niagara Falls, a place Fred always wanted to visit with the boys.

They are grateful for being able to share some time with Fred ahead of their first holiday season without him. Shortly before they left, Mylan gave the tombstone a hug.

Hospitals Keep Cutting Women During Child Birth

For more than a decade does more harm to women than good.

Mothers who receive episiotomies – an incision at the vaginal opening to create more room as a baby’s head appears – are more likely to suffer severe complications than if they had been allowed to tear naturally.

That’s why national guidelines since 2006 have called for limiting the procedure to emergencies, such as when a baby’s shoulders get stuck. Although there is no national consensus on how frequently the procedure should be used, a leading hospital safety group recommends that the cuts should occur in no more than 5% of vaginal deliveries.

But a USA today analysis of hospital billing data finds dozens of hospitals with episiotomy rates of 20% or higher, some of them nearly double that.

At the 553 hospitals analyzed, nearly 240,000 women were cut over four years. Those with the highest rates of episiotomies included major medical centers in big cities, mid-sized hospitals in metropolitan suburbs and small facilities in rural communities. Washington State had the lowest statewide rate: Just 3.8% during the time period studied. In New York and Nevada, statewide rates were more than 11%.

Nike Not Fair to Elite Athletes after Pregnancy, OpEd states

Athletic brand Nike has a popular commercial that encourages women to go after their dreams and keep being awesome while pregnant, yet a couple of Nike-sponsored elite athletes are coming out to say the brand actually penalizes women who have babies.

US Track and Fields Champion Alysia Montano who gets sponsorship from Nike spoke out.

From ABCNews.com:

Montano spoke out in an op-ed video published Sunday in The New York Times, saying that Nike, “told me to dream crazy, until I wanted a baby.”

In the accompanying article, it is said that Montano “had to fight with her sponsor to keep her paycheck.”

Other athletes, all track stars, told the New York Times that Nike, their sponsor, did not guarantee them a salary during their pregnancies and immediately after having a child.

“Getting pregnant is the kiss of death for a female athlete,” Phoebe Wright, a runner sponsored by Nike from 2010 through 2016, told the Times. “There’s no way I’d tell Nike if I were pregnant.”
