What to Do About This Odd Breastfeeding Problem First-Time Moms Experience

If you are a first time brand new mom who is breastfeeding and might have noticed the breast milk taking on a pinkish or brownish hue, you should watch today’s episode of  The Doctors – what does it mean

During the show, co-host and board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Nita Landry explains.

When a new mom starts to breast feed a lot of blood rushes to the area and sometimes some blood gets into those milk ducts and changes the color of the milk. This is more common with first time moms, it only lasts a few days and it is 100% safe for you to keep giving baby the breast milk.

However, if there is a lot of blood present, or if it is persistent, it could be a sign of infection and you should call your doctor.

Study: Babies Fed Solid Foods While Breastfeeding Stand and Walk Faster Than Strictly Breastfed Babies

Babies who were breastfeeding and fed solid foods rather than exclusively breastfed stand and walk faster than slightly faster times to standing and walking in full-term infants compared to infants exclusively breast fed, according to a new study.

Breastfeeding has long been known to provide health benefits to babies, including improved immune strength, lowered risk for asthma and allergies and more. A new study out of the University at Albany, however, found that it has no notable impact on motor development.

In the study  of 4,270 babies organized by feeding category (Breastfed exclusively (control group), Both breast and formula and Formula fed exclusively), the study found that breast milk provides nutrition and energy to babies in addition to providing hormones, growth factors, antibodies and long-chain fatty acids that aid in growth and development.

While these benefits are undisputed among experts, questions have remained as to what impact, if any, breast milk has on a children’s muscular development and their subsequent ability to hit milestones such as standing or walking.

Researchers Erin Bell, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health, collaborated with University of Albany graduate and pediatrician Scott Bello as well as Kara Michels, Akhgar Ghassabian, Sunni Mumford, Rajeshwari Sundaram and Edwina Yeung  as part of a larger Upstate KIDS Study,  of over  6,000 babies born to 5,000 mothers between 2008 and 2010 in the 57 counties of upstate New York.

The team had a particular interest in determining whether or not breastfeeding provided any motor-development advantages to pre-term babies, and because twins are often born pre-term, they also focused on twin infants.

“Although breastfeeding does not notably speed along motor development, it’s important to note that it doesn’t slow it down either, and mothers who are able to breastfeed should still consider it because of the non-motor development benefits,” Bell said. “Additionally, more research is warranted on the subject of feeding patterns and motor-development milestones, particularly in pre-term infants” said Bell.

New Study Says Your Asthma Medicine May Be Stopping You From Becoming Pregnant

Certain asthma medication, especially the “quick-acting” relievers, may affect women’s ability to conceive, warns a new study.

The study of more than 5,600 women showed that asthma patients who only use these short-acting asthma relievers take longer to become pregnant than other women.

But those who use long-acting asthma preventers conceive as quickly as other women, said the study published in the European Respiratory Journal.

While the short-acting asthma relievers provide quick relief of symptoms, long-acting asthma preventers are used to control the condition instead of getting quick relief.

“This study shows that women using short-acting asthma relievers take longer to get pregnant,” said lead researcher Luke Grzeskowiak from the University of Adelaide in Australia.

“On the other hand, continued use of long-acting asthma preventers to control asthma seems to protect fertility and red ..

Carnival Babies and Pregnant Bellies

This week is Carnival all around the world and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Historically, the tradition, which dates back to Medieval Europe and French aristocrats relates to the day or days before the penitential Lenten season when people partake in revelry and debauchery to get it out of their system before commendint the 40 day period of mourning, fasting and praying.

The festivities have evolved to include brightly colored floats in Brazil and bands in primates, beaded and bedazzled coordinated costumes there and all over the world!

In year’s past, I dubbed Wednesdays “Bump Day” and used it to highlight a creative pregnancy art or a model to feature.

In the above collage are images of heavily pregnant who chose to put on her beads and feathers anyway and challenge Samba queen or wore a Frontline costume!

All the Inspirational Super Bowl LI Commercials Featuring Kids

Last night was the Super Bowl. A lot of non-sports fans watch the big game for the creative commercials that debut. I pulled those that featured babies and kids in them and in particular two which paid homage to diversity, inclusion, motivation and inspiration to the youth and all of us to do better.

T-Mobile used actress (and our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum) Kerry Washington to narrate and give empowering messages in commercial featuring lots of super adorable and cute babies.

“Some people may see your differences and be threatened by them,” Washington intones. “But you are unstoppable. You’ll love who you want. You’ll demand fair and equal pay. You will not allow where you come from to dictate where you’re going.”

Love it! Coca-Cola also had a pretty poetic commercial. Various cast recite a poem:

There’s no one quite like you. Or her. Or him. Or them. The world is filled with over 7 billion unique yous who are all special in their own ways. And while we’re different, there’s a Coke for every single one of us. Whether it be in a glass bottle, or a mini, or an ice-cold Coke Life, or a Coke Zero sugar in a can, there’s a refreshing way to Enjoy Yours. There’s a Coke for he, and she, and her, and me, and them. There’s a different Coke for all of us–– Especially one for him. No feet have wandered where you’ve walked,  No eyes saw what you’ve seen. No one’s lived the life you live,  No head has held your dreams. To act the same would be mundane—  what a boring thing to do! That’s why there is just one me  and a billion unique yous. We all have different looks and loves,  likes and dislikes, too— But there’s a Coke for we and us,  and there’s a Coke for you.

Love it! Watch:

Survey: More Couples Breaking With Tradition of Waiting Three Months Before Announcing Pregnancy

A new survey has shed some light on the changes in pregnancy announcements.

The new study, by ChannelMum.com, which surveyed 1,435 mums, has found that a large number of couples are telling people they are pregnant before the recommended time and before they have their first scan.

Mums are breaking with the tradition of waiting until the three-month mark to announce their pregnancies, with just 26 percent holding out until after their scan to share the news.

Instead, one third chose to tell family and friends as soon as they discover they are expecting, with more than half announcing their pregnancy by the seven-week stage, despite medical experts advising that the risk of miscarriage still remains high.

And not only has there been a change in time scale, they are also changing the way they break the news.

Study: Probiotic Milk During Pregnancy Lowers Complications

Pregnant women who drink milk containing probiotic “friendly” bacteria are less likely to have premature births or pre-eclampsia, a serious complication of pregnancy, suggests a Scandinavian study.

Timing was everything, though, researchers found: Women who drank probiotic milk early in their pregnancies, but not those who only drank it before or late in pregnancy, were 21 percent less likely to give birth prematurely compared to others. For pre-eclampsia, a 20 percent risk reduction went along with drinking probiotic milk late in pregnancy, but not earlier in gestation or before getting pregnant.

Groundhog Day: Facts about Punxsutawney Phil You Never Knew

So today, on Groundhog Day, rodent meteorologist named Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, signaling 8 muore weeks of winter.

Fret none, according to the history books, Phil, the famous groundhogs  who lives in Pennsylvania has only been correct 18 out of 102 Times! Yikes!

But we turn to him each time because of tradition.

The first official Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2, 1887 at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

Here are a few things other  you might not have known compliments of sprocle.com:

Phil has a posse.

A select group of top hat and tuxedo-wearing individuals called the Inner Circle take care of Phil year-round. They’re a group of local volunteers who are responsible for carrying on the tradition of Groundhog Day. When Phil emerges from his burrow to make his prediction, he “speaks” to members of the Inner Circle in Groundhogese and tells them his forecast. The Inner Circle then translates for the rest of the world.

Phil is old.

The average groundhog lives to be between 6-8 years but Punxsutawney Phil is supposedly over 130 years old. He gets his longevity from drinking “groundhog punch” a secret elixir known only by members of the Inner Circle. One sip during the Groundhog Picnic every summer gives Phil an additional seven years of life.

Phil is fat.

Punxsutawney Phil weighs around 20 pounds. The average groundhog weighs 12-15 pounds. Apparently “groundhog punch” is fattening.

Phil lives in a library.

Phil lives in “Groundhog Zoo,” a warm terrarium built into the Punxsutawney Memorial Library. Punxsutawney Phil can be seen from outside or from inside the Library. He shares the home with his wife Phyllis and a couple of other groundhogs.

Phil gets lots of visitors.

In the years following the 1993 release of the movie, “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray, crowds numbering as high as 40,000 have flocked to Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney. Ironically, the movie was shot in Woodstock, Illinois.

Phil’s full name is long…really long.

Punxsutawney Phil’s full name is -Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.
