What’s the Most Favorite Halloween Candy in Your State?

Everyone wants to be that popular house that is known for giving out the best candy!

The National Retail Federation estimates that shoppers will spend $2.7 billion on Halloween candy this year. Industry research has shown that, in 2015, online candy sales increased by 15 percent. People are realizing they can save time and money by skipping the store and purchasing from the comfort of their home. But will you buy the right candy?

As the preeminent Bulk candy dealer for over 10 years, CandyStore.com combed through sales data (2007-2016), looking in particular at the months leading up to Halloween to determine which type of candy is most popular in each state.  Its analysis,  presented here in the below lovely HTML5 interactive ninja-style map, shows just that:

VIRAL: Atlanta Retiree Comforts Hospital’s Preemies When Parents Can’t Be There

During a time when there is a lot of bad news being circulated, the story about the retiree who provides kangaroo care to babies in an Atlanta NICU is heartwarming.

Last Friday, the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta posted a photo of David Deutchman holding a sleeping newborn on its Facebook page and within hours, the post went viral and was shown close to 179,000 times

“On Tuesdays, he visits the PICU to hold babies whose parents can’t be with them that day,” the hospital captioned the photo.” On Thursdays, he makes rounds in the NICU.

This photo was taken by baby Logan’s mom as she fought back happy tears. Logan has been in our hospital for six weeks. Every night, his mom goes home to be with his big sister. Every morning, she drives back to Scottish Rite feeling “anxious that he’s been missing his mommy.” On this particular morning, she walked into the PICU to find Logan—a preemie born at just 25 weeks—in the arms of David, who smiled and introduced himself as the ICU Grandpa. This photo captures just one precious moment with a legend of a hospital volunteer who’s been holding patients, and their parents’ hands, for 12 years.”

Who says there’s not enough love in the world? We also loved NOW THIS’ video roundup of this heartwarming story and this very special man:

Doc McStuffins Featured a Lesbian Family But Didn’t Make It A Big Deal…For A reason

Without much fanfare, The Disney Channel broadcast an episode of its popular show Doc McStuffins featuring an interracial lesbian couple last month. The episode titled Doc McStuffins titled “The Emergency Plan” was voiced by real life lesbian actresses Portia di Rossi and actress/comedian Wanda Sykes.

To perhaps make it less of a big deal and more normal, the show was not about the same sex couple being lesbians but taught kids how to prepare for an earthquake.

The lack of fanfare toward this inclusivity appears to be the first step in reflecting the world as it is, a Mashable report on the episode aptly summarized.

“I always envision Doc McStuffins as a show about what it means to accept everyone as part of our communities,” said the show’s executive producer Chris Nee in a GLAAD blogpost. “As part of a two-mom family, I’m proud to have an episode that reflects my son’s world, and shows everyone that love is love in McStuffinsville,” said Nee, who also wrote the episode.”

US Postal Service’s New Stamp Honors First Children’s Book Featuring A Black Child

This week, the United States Postal Service issued a brand new set of cool Snowy Day Forever stamps in honor of the work of Caldecott Medal winner Ezra Jack Keats, author of the 1962 book, “The Snowy Day“.

It’s the first mainstream children’s book in which an African-American child served as the central character.

The stamps were unveiled at a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, October 3rd at the Brooklyn Public Library Central Library in Brooklyn, New York.

Diversity in books and media matters especially for children who are not used to seeing themselves reflected positively in mainstream culture and so it is great that the Postal Service has done this.

Speaking of diversity in imgagery, we also invite you to check out a recent interview with Disney star Zendaya over her efforts to get more black families featured on the channel!

Let’s Talk About The Small House Trend (INFOGRAPHIC)

Growing your family often means growing your home. However, there is a trend of people who want to live in urban epicenters close to entertainment, culture and more shopping options purchasing smaller and smaller homes.

With houses getting smaller year on year people are having to adjust the way they live to fit in with this increasing trend.

Flexispace put  together an infographic which looks at how this is affecting house buyers in the UK as well as exploring the smallest homes in the world as a comparison.

Want to weigh up the pros and cons of small house living? This graphic provides a great start point for your research.

New York City Gives All Public School Students Free Lunch

Joining the cities of Detroit and Boston which both offer free lunch to all school children is New York City.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina announced before the start of this school year that the city will be making free lunch available to all 1.1 million of the city’s public school students.  Reason?

About 1/3 of them qualify for free or reduced lunch anyway but yet a bunch do not get it because their parents fail to fill out the paperwork required.

Advocates for child nutrition have long urged the city to ensure universal access by making lunch free.

Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio says free school lunch will “ensure that every kid in New York City has the fuel they need to succeed.” The new school year starts Thursday.

Good stuff!

The 20 Happiest States In America: Do You Live In One?

America ranks # 14 on this year’s World Happiness Report, down one spot since the previous edition.

With research showing that money up to a certain dollar amount can contribute to happiness, the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017’s Happiest States in America.

To determine where Americans have the highest satisfaction with life, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states across 28 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from emotional health to income level to sports participation rate.

Here are the states that ranked in the top 20:

Alarming Study Links Flu Shot with Early Miscarriage

A puzzling study of U.S. pregnancies found that women who had miscarriages between 2010 and 2012 were more likely to have had back-to-back annual flu shots that included protection against swine flu.

Vaccine experts think the results may reflect the older age and other miscarriage risks for the women, and not the flu shots. Health officials say there is no reason to change the government recommendation that all pregnant women be vaccinated against the flu. They say the flu itself is a much greater danger to women and their fetuses.

Hurricane Harvey: 11 Credible On-The-Ground Charities to Donate To

courtesy Direct Relief

Looking for ways to help the Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston, Texas but wary of news accounts that some of the large charities funnel donations to pay salaries, travel, and overhead expenses, and so you don’t know who to give to?

Join the Club.

I don’t want to malign any organization that actually does a lot of good (read about one here) but there is a taint in the giving world.  People who want to donate and help out victims also must feel confident that their funds are actually helping people, directly.

It is such a concern that organizations are releasing statements about their commitment to use donations properly.  The Texas Organizing Project Education Fund posted a notice clarifying that its Harvey Community Relief Fund would be used for victims of the storm: “We want to be clear on a key point about the Harvey Community Relief Fund, which is being housed within the Texas Organizing Project Education Fund: We have an ironclad commitment that 100 percent of the money raised into this fund will be spent directly on ensuring low income and people of color are not forgotten in the relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts. Not a dime will be spent on any other purpose.”

The organization recognized and learned from how past storm relief aid was mishandled

“One year after Hurricane Ike, low-income neighborhoods remained dotted with blue tarps and damaged homes without hope for assistance to rebuild,” the organization’s press release reads. “The money was on its way elsewhere. After the Tax Day Flood of 2016, people in Houston’s Greenspoint neighborhood were being forced by their landlords to pay rent on apartments that were uninhabitable.”

Before hitting that Donate Button, consider first checking out websites like Charity Navigator,  Charity Watch and the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving website that rate charities before giving.

I did some leg work and assembled a list of organizations and groups that are raising funds for on-the-ground help and support to consider giving to:

1. The Food Bank of Corpus Christi can provide 7 meals to displaced Harvey victims for just $1.

2. The Texas State Bar is organizing attorney from the state and all over the country that can help victims apply for FEMA aid, replacing lost documents, or fielding insurance claims questions, landlord-tenant issues, home repair contracts, etc. Sign up HERE! (I did because although I’m not a practicing attorney, I think I am a whiz at landlord and tenant law.)

3. The Texas Organizing Project Education Fund is collecting donations for its Harvey Community Relief Fund that will go where needed most though the organization is still ascertaining how to best channel donations, but it could go to personal hygiene items to legal aid and advocacy.

4. Kimberly Reed of NextGen Storm Leads in Denver Colorado hosting a supplies drive on September 8 and is trying to get contractors from across the US to volunteer to come help people rebuild. Find her on her Facebook Page HERE. She is not collecting CASH.

5. Direct Relief is top rated and is providing on-the-ground assistance as well. The organization has committed $200,000 to help storm victims and made $100 million in medical supplies available. The nonprofit dispatches crates (see above photo in header) which contain critical medicines and supplies, are currently with health clinics being impacted by Hurricane Harvey

6. The Catholic Charity of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is collecting supplies to distribute to families and stock at the various parishes that are open and providing shelter, food and supplies. You can also donate cash. As a Catholic and someone familiar with the work of Catholic Charity, I can attest that most of the funds are spent where it matters.

7. Team Rubicon organizes military vets and reserve men and women and sends them to assist first responders to deploy emergency response teams.

8. The Houston Humane Society is help the four-legged victims, and provide them with the shelter and care they need while their owners recover. It has created its own Harvey Donation Fund you can contribute to.

9. Texas Diaper Bank – Texas Diaper Bank is putting together disaster relief kits for families with young children. You can donate here.

10. Americares says that for every $10 donated, it can provide $200 in Aid in the form of water distribution, aid and mobilizing medical outreach with its local partners.

11.Southwest Airlines Southwest is collecting Rapid Rewards points to donate to partner organizations to get relief workers, assistance to first responders and search and rescue teams that are directly involved with disaster relief in areas affected by Harvey. The points donations enable relief workers and volunteers to travel to areas in need. Click here to donate frequent flyer points to Harvey relief efforts.

I’m adding to this post as I come across others doing on-the-ground relief efforts:
